It worked like a charm. Thank you so much.

emacs open display problem

2008-08-10 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I have been an avid cygwin user for several years. I recently bought a new HP
laptop with Vista, and I immediately installed cygwin. I had a few glitches but
was able to figure out fixes for all of them but one: emacs just flat-out
refuses to open a display window. This is the only program which has this
problem that I know about so far. Everything else that I commonly use works
fine.

I've tried the following commands in an xterm, all to no avail:
  emacs
  emacs -d :0
  emacs -d 0:0

I don't get any error messages, but no emacs either.

Emacs is installed, by the way. I can run it in the parent xterm window by
  emacs -nw
but this doesn't work right either (it freezes up, the keystroke commands don't
work right, etc.).

Also, the phantom emacs processes that never open a window show up in ps.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling emacs, but no luck.

I searched the mail archives and couldn't find anyone else who had seen this
problem. Any ideas?

helP: malfunction of the x window system

2007-12-04 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi All,

I'm trying to start the Xwindows system both under Cygwin using startx command
or directly.
It does not work and return the message:

XWin was started with teh following command line:
X :0 -multiwindow -clipboard

_XSERVTransSocketCreateListener: listen() failed
_XSERVTransSocketINITCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed
_XSERVTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.X11-unix should be set to root
_XSERVTransSocketCreateListener: listen() failed
_XSERVTransSocketUNIXCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListener: failed to create listener for local

Fatal server error:
Cannot establish any listening sockets - Make sure an X server isn't already
running

I checked there were not other Xserver running...
The system was working properly few day ago.
I also tried Xming and does not work either on this computer.

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated

2007-12-04 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Thank you for the suggestion.

I did not install new firewalls. The firewall was running also before when the
x-server was working correctly.

I suspect that the issue was generated trying to run Xming. I had some minor
problem with Xfree (before the major issue I reported now) and I tried Xming to
see if it was working better. Clearly I did not solve the problem since now
nor Xming neither Xfree are working...

for comparison I tried an evaluation version of a commercial x-server and it
works. But it is not working as good as the cygwin-Xfree was working in the
past.

thanks again,
any suggestion is very appreciated

The method for defining the PATH on the commandline yielded similar content in

behavior arose when defining the PATH, $PATH=%PATH:/usr/X11R6/bin, locally in
BASH and returning to the commandline after startx failed-the PATH environment
variable inherited from Windows, which provides access to cygwin/usr,
cygwin/usr/bin and hence all the shell programs (commands). The Windows
inherited PATH variable restores when opening a new Cygwin session.

Please advise as to how xorg can be successfully launched on my computer?

Does Hydravision expose two separate displays in the Display control

And are the X/Y pixel dimension of each monitor the same?

It looks like what's going on is the X/Y dimensions of the X root

Hydravision problem?

2004-03-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi,

Thanks for your response.

I should have been more explicit.

Here is what I have used:

REM Startup the X Server with the integrated Windows-based window manager.

start XWin -multiwindow -multiplemonitors -clipboard

REM Startup an xterm, using bash as the shell.

run xterm -sl 1000 -sb -rightbar -ms red -fg yellow -bg black -e /usr/bin/bash

I have also tried it with the -screen 0 -screen 1 options, and with just the screen

options.

-multiplemonitors seems to work best but I still have problems.

The xterm window is partially blanked out with white. When I drag

the window it flashes on both screens completely whiting out the xterm

window. When I drop it, the xterm is just where it should be but

the xterm window is still at least partially blanked out with white.

Any ideas?

Thanks for your help.

Pete

Peter,

I am trying to run cywin X on an IBM T41p laptop with an

extra display connected. IBM uses ATI and Hydravision for

their laptops. The dual display seems to work fine in windows

mode. The external display is an WXGA (1280x768) although

the ati card will only support 1024x768. The main lcd display

of the note book is 1400x1050.

So I am trying to run X in multiwindow mode. I have tried it

with and without -screen 0 -screen1 options.

In all cases the xterm seems to want to be in both displays

 kinda flashing around on both.

 Any ideas, or known problems?

Please try to use -multimonitors option.

Re: security, cvs, was Re: interface bindings of x-server

2003-11-19 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
hi !

the only chance to get rid of it, is to use unix domain socket (via -nolisten tcp)
   OR to
add the option, to specify the interface bindings and be able to bind it to local
  loopback
ONLY. I`d prefer the second one.

Why? What benefit does a TCP loopback connection provide over the Unix
domain socket (which is generally faster on most OS'es)?
the benefit would be compatibility, IMHO.
think of a scenario where cygwin/xfree86 + native win32 ssh client are combined. i`m
sure, this isn`t too
exotic - e.g. i know a _LOT_ of people who do ssh-tunneling via native win32 ssh
client putty in combination
with a local separate xserver on their windoze box. does anybody know if any native
or non cygwin based ssh client
on windows is able to use cygwin/xfree86 unix domain socket on win32 machine? i`m not
sure - but i don`t think so.

but, anyway - being able to bind to 127.0.0.1 would be just ONE special case of a
more general dedicated interface
binding feature. nobody says , that you _should_ use 127.0.0.1 - but you always would
have an option, to do so.
i`m sysadmin - i like options. ;)

feature seems to be in tightvnc already - so maybe we need just some code transfer
  (since vnc is xfree86
  based) ? ;)

Only if the original author of the tightvnc changes agrees to
distribute under the X license instead of tightvnc's GPL.
oh - pardon! sure! thanks for bringing that back to my mind that this needs to be
adressed!
i`m currently digging into tightvnc to get sure it IS the appropriate code at all.

Inconvinient colormap

2002-11-04 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Dear sirs,
I have used the new version of XFree86 since August. I am happy with it.
Some fine tunning is still needed. One problem is related to the 256-colors
colormap, (I am using windows95). This colormap is not convenient because
some important colors, such as green3 or red3, are not included. For
example
the color features of RXVT cannot be used. I suppose that the colormap is
inherited from Windows (?), so that it connot be modified. If such is the
case, I sugest to modify instead the /llib/X11/rgb.txt table. The color
red3=205-0-0 is not in the colormap, but 204-0-0 is there. So if one
modifies
the definition (red3=204-0-0) the problem is solved. This should be done
 to few colors such as red3, green3, blue3,yellow3, magenta3, cyan3 and the
grey
scale. Many of the greys in the colormap have no name, but are very close
to some standard greys that are not included in the colormap. Example:
grey80=204-204-204 is not in the colormap, but there is a 203-203-203 grey
 that has no standard name.
I hope this comments could be useful.

RE: CATIA Launch Fails

2002-09-24 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

What makes you think that not being able to launch CATIA has anything
to do with Cygwin? Have you tried uninstalling Cygwin and noticed that
the problem goes away? If not, this should be your first step. The
problem you're seeing is not obviously caused by Cygwin from the information
given. FWIW, I run SolidWorks, Solid Edge, and Pro/E (plus allot of other
programs - including some by M$ ;-) ) on many systems with Cygwin installed.
So unless the CATIA team at Dassault have something against Cygwin, I expect
this isn't your problem. But you'll need to get a bit more specific about
the problem if Cygwin does have a role in it.

Good luck,

Larry

I've attempted to launch CATIA v4 with CYGwin. CATIA tries to start, then
nothing. Any ideas?

Re: Expect Script under X-Windows

2002-07-22 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The normal method of logon using ssh requires the the user input a
password. Because of security issues, this cannot be circumvented by any
other method. All I wanted to do was to poll around fifty servers for
information. Each has the same logon name and password. Now, I need to
manually send the password for each and every server.

Could you clarify? Which password do you mean exactly? The passphrase
for your ssh keyring? If you script that, you might as well have no
passphrase at all.

It's only on my own machine with proper permissions.

So you're writing a script that very likely will contain a password in
cleartext? How secure is that?
