I've found one other user with exactly the same problem, but have had no response in this forum or in the cybertechhelp forum where the other user posted, so I'm posting again. Currently, my options seem to be: (1) go buy another laptop, maybe cygwin-x will work on that one. I kind of like this one, though, everything else works on it. (2) attempt to 'downgrade' from 6.8.99 to 6.8.1 / 6.8.2 (there's a mix of these available on the mirrors); I've seen one report by a user who had success fixing a similar issue by this means. Is there anythng I should know before I try this? It seems that setup.exe will refuse to change all the X components at once, in particular the xorg-x11-base needs to be changed separately. Do I change it first, or last? My previous experience with this sort of thing makes me concerned that I'll irrevocably mess up my install if I do this wrong. You may want to use startxwin.sh or startxwin.bat, since there seems to be no evidence of anybody trying those methods yet. My experience is that I have tried startx and startxwin.sh, and they both don't work; the startxwin.bat file is the only one that worked for me. Try it out, and see what happens. RE: STARTXWIN.BAT Hanging Under Win2KPro
In my case, the startxwin.bat file doesn't set the paths correctly. I had to modify it to suit my needs, like this (to follow a batch script I wrote): startxwin.bat: @echo off SET DISPLAY=127.0.0.1:0.0 REM REM The path in the CYGWIN_ROOT environment variable assignment assume REM that Cygwin is installed in a directory called 'cygwin' in the root REM directory of the current drive. REM REM This batch file will almost always be run from the same drive (and REM directory) as the drive that contains Cygwin/X, therefore you will REM not need to add a drive letter to CYGWIN_ROOT. RE: STARTXWIN.BAT Hanging Under Win2KPro
I have W2K Professional, and it works just fine. You may want to edit the startxwin.bat file to fit your needs. (Rightclick startxwin.bat edit) For your convenience, I wrote up this seperate little batch script (run under cmd or standalone): @echo off C: set CYGWINBASE=C:\cygwin set HOME=%CYGWINBASE%\home\[username] set PATH=%PATH%;%CYGWINBASE%\bin chdir=%CYGWINBASE%\bin cd .. cd usr\X11R6\bin startxwin.bat Reply if this helps or not. Renze Sent: Friday, June 09, 2006 6:13 PM To: cygwin-xfree@cygwin.com Subject: STARTXWIN.BAT Hanging Under Win2KPro The subject says it all. STARTXWIN.BAT is hanging on the startup under Win2KPro. If I run it, it will stall out - I can't right-click on the X icon in the system tray to bring up the menu, and when I examine the processes, it appears that XWin.exe is running, as well as an xterm.exe process, but no XTerm ever pops up. If I kill the process, then start it up *again*, everything pops up just fine. Ideas? If this is something that somebody has encountered before, a simple pointer in the right direction would do just fine. TIA. --- Douglas J. RE: Can't launch X-windows from domain power user account
Have you tried using startxwin.sh from the Cygwin command line? --- What you said about the privileges, you mentioned /usr/tmp. That is just a temporary files dir. Instead you want to make the cygwin install dir accessible to all users, so you should: * Right click on on cygwin folder, hit properties * Security Add * Select Everything in the list and hit add * Hit OK twice. If any dialogs appear, just hit OK.
