I have this problem too. I found a weird, non-code partial solution:
run some sort of constantly-updating graphical program in the
background, like ico or something like that.
This workaround is apparently avoiding the X 1.8.0 response problem.
I am running xeyes and the slow response problem is no longer getting in
the way of using X on a Dell E6410.
I am using Version 1.8.0 with a build date of 2010-04-02
