If I know that you can receive in *any wireless* system, then I know something about your location. This includes nets with huge 'cells', like a 100,000 watt commercial broadcast station (are you listening to KFOO or WFOO?), and nets with smaller cells, like the 'cellular' phones and 802.11foo meshes. The only difference (albeit a significant one) is the size of the cell ---the smaller your cells the more bits I get about your location. (Barring cypherpunk jokesters who make cell calls from the foci of dishes to hit another base station...) Of course if you're needing to transmit, you give your location. If you're needing to receive, and you roam beyond the diameter of a single 'cell', you are going to have to transmit your location (think cell phones) for routing XOR the system has no routing and must broadcast to all cells (think pagers) (you might consider the physical cells merged into a large single virtual cell in this case.). The high-tech market research firm reports that, although still in its infancy, the security IC market will be propelled upward by the continuation of heightened security concerns, coupled with the technology's ability to help companies operate more efficiently and lower operating costs. As a result, the encryption chip market will grow from less than $75 million in 2001 to over $575 million by 2006. "There is no escape from the reality that companies need to do business over the Web. Therefore, security is not an option, but a necessity," says Eric Mantion, a Senior Analyst with In- Stat/MDR. "However, if companies have to use encryption, they would prefer to do it at the lowest possible price and well designed encryption chips can expand the capacity of a security application at a fraction of the cost of using software over generalized processors." Blunkett Ban on killing David.
A package of sweeping criminal justice reforms aimed at "rebalancing the system in favour of the victim" will announced today by Home Secretary David Blunkett. The controversial measures, which include the scrapping of universal trial by jury, have been fiercely critcised by civil liberty groups. But the Government says the new Criminal Justice Bill will give greater support to the victims of crime. 'Confidence trick' Under the proposals, the double jeopardy rule, which prevents anyone being tried twice for the same crime, will be scrapped. If someone has damaged your reputation, you can sue him or her for damages far more satisfying in the long run than pulling a gun. Title: Morning Briefing, 12/02/2002 Click Here! MONDAY a.m. December 2, 2002 by David Nichols It's hard to argue with the weekly chart of the S&P 100 (OEX). Last week marked the eighth straight week that it has gone up. It's also interesting to note that on a weekly basis, this current rally has surpassed the August rally. The OEX is now coming up quickly on the critical 40 week moving average, which corresponds closely to the widely-followed 200 day moving average. It's an uptrend, plain and simple. But as I've mentioned, on an anecdotal level I've never seen a trend so sniped at by traders. The bears are stubborn here, and have dug in to ride out this uptrend. This only helps to fuel further upside, much to their distress. Now in addition to anecdotal evidence, we have actual evidence from the VIX that the uptrend is being fought. Last Wednesday, while the price of the OEX was shooting up, the VIX was also rising strongly. This isn't the way it generally works. When prices soar, the VIX usually tumbles down. So what's going on? It's likely an anomaly due to thin Holiday trading, but it does give us some insight. Remember, the VIX reflects the price in the options pit for OEX calls and puts -- it's a true gauge of supply and demand. A rising VIX means the demand for options is high, and the market makers are able to raise the price of options into this demand. This is exactly what happened on Wednesday. Somebody was buying options, creating a surge of demand. I've read some reports from the pit that a big short was hedging a position in a rush by buying calls, and the market makers were feasting on this unfortunate soul, inflating the prices of options into this outsized demand. Ironically this hedge may end up being very smart, even if the premium was inflated. This uptrend isn't over by any means. In fact, with this jump in the VIX, there is now more "fuel in the tank" to support another push higher. This can be seen clearly in our new sentiment dashboard. Both the mid-term and the long-term trends remain up, with good confidence numbers in each time-frame. The number 4 on each gauge indicates our confidence in the trend reading. The current reading is 4 out of a possible 7. I've had questions about why we didn't use 10 for this, as this would make it more intuitive. The answer is actually pretty simple -- we are looking at 7 different indicators, and adding a point to this "confidence diffusion index" if the indicator currently supports the trend. Just so you know, I regard a reading of 4 as strong affirmation of the trend. 2 or below would be time to show caution. One thing about the VIX right now is it is very, very widely followed. It has been so accurate at predicting the swings in the market over the last 2 1/2 years that now it is the go-to indicator for many traders. But the tricky thing about the VIX is it doesn't always work the same, and a cookie-cutter approach to its interpretation can lose you lots of money. You have to be careful, and not make too many assumptions or intricate interpretations. The VIX is now at 31.08, and this uptrend really won't be running on vapors until the VIX plunges into the low 20s. We should see the VIX go under 25, and stay there for a little while, before this rally has fully exhausted itself. I've mentioned recently that this is the type of breakout that typically ends in exhaustion, and not in total collapse. Also, it's important to keep in mind that often the biggest part of a trend comes at the very end. This is why I've wanted to stay in there on this uptrend as long as possible, as there could still be big jumps up in price before we reach the exhaustion point. That any particular string can be -precisely- defined as truth or false as required by the definition of completeness, is what is not possible. Here we come down to what appears to be at the heart of the confusion as far as I see it. "True", depending on who's saying it (even in a discussion of Godelian Completeness), may be different. Mathematical types may define "true" as being "provably true", meaning something like "this statement can be derived from the other statements in my system by building up from logic plus the fundamental axioms". In Godel, in any formal system there are statements that are true but unprovable in that system. This would seem to render the notion of "true" above meaningless. But what it means in a "practical" sense is that there may be truisms (such as, "there exists no solution to the problem of a^n + b^n = c^n, where a,b,c and n are integers and n>2"), which are true (and let's face it, this statement is either true or false) but which can not be proven given the fundamental axioms of the system. Thus, in order to build more mathematics with this "truth", it must be incoroprated as an axiom. (Godel also says that after this "incoporation" is done, there will now be new unprovable statements.) I originally mentioned Godel in the context of the notion of the dificulty of factoring large numbers. My point was that its possible that... 1) Factoring is inherently difficult to do, and no mathematical advances will ever change that. and 2) We may never be able to PROVE 1 above. US Expanding Assassination List uploaded 01 Dec 2002 The United States is quietly examining the feasibility of assassinating Hizbullah leaders linked to the deaths of U.S. soldiers and civilians in the 1980s. The assassination option was bolstered following the success of a U.S. mission that tracked and killed six suspected Al Qaida operatives in Yemen last month. So far, Lebanon and Syria have refused to cooperate in efforts to capture Hizbullah members responsible for the killing of hundreds of Americans in the early 1980s, Middle East Newsline reported. The Iranian-backed group blew up the U.S. Marine Corps barracks and the embassy in Beirut in 1982 and 1983 during the U.S. peacekeeping mission in Lebanon. In Yemen, the United States used a Predator unmanned air vehicle to follow a car with the Al Qaida members. The Predator then launched a Hellfire anti-tank missile to destroy the car. U.S. officials said the issue is being discussed by the intelligence and law enforcement communities after an assessement that Hizbullah has been cooperating with Al Qaida to launch attacks on civilian installations in Africa and the Middle East. The prospect of assassinating Hizbullah leaders was raised publicly during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing last week. Such a move was supported by committee chairman Sen. Arlen Specter, who was questioning U.S. Attorney Robert Conrad, who helped break up a Hizbullah ring in North Carolina last year. "The United States is moving against Al Qaida key people," Specter told Conrad. "You saw what happened in Yemen not too long ago with military action taken against Al Qaida key figures. Would you recommend that for Hizbullah, key figures outside the United States?" "Yes, sir," Conrad replied. "And I hope that extradition efforts and other rendering efforts might someday be fruitful here. At that point, Specter said the prospect of the United States obtaining the extradition of Hizbullah suspects from Lebanon appears dim. The Seoul government had to get the help of 4400 police officers in order to defend the deployment sites of "American defenders." Here is the story that happened before this event. Two 14-year-old Korean schoolgirls were heading to their friend's place for a birthday party on June 13th. An American tank ran them over and killed the girls. This tragedy definitely caused indignation amid the people of Korea. The indignation only increased during the dispute regarding the trial on the two members of the tank's crew. The legal bodies of Korea insisted that the trial was supposed to take place in a Korean court. Yet, the Americans announced that the military men would be judged by American court martial. They claimed that the incident happened when the American soldiers were fulfilling their duty of service. It was also said that the soldiers were doing a training. The USA was confused with the growing wave of protests. On June 27th the military command of the United States stated that it would be an "honest trial." On November 22nd, a court martial ruled that the American military men were not guilty of the death of two Korean little girls. As it was explained in the verdict, the tank's driver had his view blocked, whereas the navigator's communication equipment was out of order. Since then, every step of the American authorities added more fuel to the fire. An American general released a statement for journalists, in which he expanded on the differences between the legal norms of the USA and Korea. President George Bush was four months late with his official apologies for South Korea. All those statements from American officials were perceived as scorn by the Koreans. There was a campaign launched to collect signatures for the reconsideration of the legacy for the "American defenders" to stay in the country. A million of signatures has been collected already. The Korea Herald newspaper wrote that the Korean government was allowed to deal only with 69 of one thousand two hundred and forty six crimes, that were committed by the American military men in South Korea during 1999-2001.
