Anti-Privatisation Activist Murdered.
JOHANNESBURG: HUMAN RIGHTS Feb 10 2003 Anti-Privatisation Activist Murdered, Attacks Continue Early in the morning of February 8 in Orange Farm (an informal settlement of 1.5 million people south of Johannesburg), 61 year-old Anti-Privatisation Forum APF) and Orange Farm Water Crisis Committee (OWCC)activist Emily Nengolo, was shot dead in her home by two unknown assailants in what appears to be a politically motivated attack. Over the last year, the OWCC has been actively and effectively involved in resisting water and electricity cut-offs and evictions in their community as well as building community organisation and struggle for meaningful socio-economic development in response to the neoliberal policies of the South African government. Cypherpunk hypocrisy.
Pledges to bits of cloth,Oh no,no,no thats just not us at all...a few letters down Mongo is spouting his statist garbage again, unquestioned and uncriticized. He is a total nationalist/statist fraud. If it's silly to pledge to a bit of cloth then why is it OK to practise parchment worship? Entirely out of touch with the real currents of contemporary resistance, you denounce practical opposition to the system as "nihilism," "Luddism," and other big words you don't understand. A glance at the world confirms that their utopian capitalism just can't compete with the state. With enemies like Cypherpunks, the state doesn't need friends. http://ri.xu.org/arbalest/alembic2c.html

Worked for 12 years of public school (of course after about the 4'th or 5'th grade I don't ever remember having to do it in school except perhaps at assembly or a sports event). Reminds me of the time in 5th grade when a teacher threatened to tie me in a chair. I told her my mother would 'beat her ass'. They called my mother, she asked the teacher and the principle if the threat had been made. They said yes. She said I was right, she would beat their asses. Pretty impressive from a women barely over 5ft. This was the same women in high school who told the principle he had better things to do with his time than bother me about not tucking my shirt in or having long hair. I wish I had a picture of the instructor in the only time I ever got detention (in HS) when they threatened me with more detention and expulsion for long hair. 'Ripping them a new asshole' only begins to describe. I did my three days and that was that. I've never put my hand on my heart or said the pledge, don't ever intend to either. I'll never sign an oath either. I've had people ask me about it, a simple 'Fuck you' resolved the problem quite nicely. -- We are all interested in the future for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. Not much different from Bush's "Time is running out" or "They hate us because we love freedom". Would you like to show us the part of the twelve page German law of March, 1938 that limits gun permits to members of the Nazi party? Uh huh, I didn't think so.

Undervalued Weekly Reporter Initiates Coverage: OTCBB: LAIR UWR ALERT: Since September 11th traveling by air has become a combat zone. This Belgian airline carrier is taking over Sabena's once coveted Brussels hub, creating low-cost direct international routes and providing high quality service. With all of its competitive advantages L-AIR Holdings (OTC BB: LAIR) is destined to become the "JetBlue" (NASDAQ: BLU) of Europe. HOW TO BENEFIT FROM THE AIRLINE CARRIER/TRAVEL CRISIS BY INVESTING IN HIGH GROWTH SAFE, SECURE and PROFITABLE GLOBAL CARRIERS? L-Air Holdings, Inc. (OTC BB: LAIR) - US$20M in revenue immediately from its first three routes. Shares Outstanding-22.305 Million Shares in DTC--4.5 Million DTC shares m'gt friendly---900k DTC management shares--3.2 Million DTC shares in public float-400k Recent Price---$0.185 Year Low/Hi$0.09 - $0.185 Visist Website at lair.com If you are a frequent or even some-time airline passenger then you already know how important it is to not only receive a low-priced fare, but to get the most expeditious and friendly customer service possible. This is where most international airline carriers have failed since September 11th. Now that war with Iraq is likely, further financial crisis at most of the major airlines is also likely. Alternative international air carriers flying under flags from countries not likely to be the target of terrorist attack are seeing their bookings increase dramatically. So who benefits from this? The airline carriers in countries such as Belgium, France, Norway and others that, can operate safely and securely within this framework, while not sacrificing customer service and satisfaction through pricing. That is one of the reasons why we believe L-Air Holdings, Inc. (OTCBB: LAIR) will succeed particularly well in the short term. Long-term we feel that the OTCBB: LAIR business model combined with implementation by its impressive management team and in-place financiers will bring much higher valuations to this stock. The Company's commitment to cost efficiencies and customer satisfaction is at the core of its business model, just like JetBlue (NASDAQ: JBLU), Southwest Air (NYSE: LUV), and easyJet.com, all of whom are very successful within their respective markets and industry leaders. This international carrier is on the path to success. Fortune Magazine recently stated that Southwest Airlines is the all-time #1 successful investment. We feel L-Air Holdings is on a similar path. As recently reported in SPEEDNEWS (speednews.com), the newsletter of record for the aviation industry, L-Air Holdings is in the process of acquiring a European airline, Belgium Universal Airways, in order to receive an AOC (air operations certificate). Within one-month of finalizing the acquisition currently being negotiated and receipt of its AOC, expected to be complete by March 1, 2003, LAIR will operate two Airbus A340-300 aircraft over three high-traffic routes. Contracts for these routes are in place with tour operators and other agencies providing an initial and immediate revenue stream of approximately US$400k weekly, or annualized revenues in excess of $20 million from existing contracts. Based in Brussels, Belgian Universal Airways, through direct ownership by OTCBB: LAIR, is being transformed into a low-priced passenger airline providing exceptional customer service, much like its USA based counterpart, JetBlue (NASDAQ: JBLU). The Company plans an aggressive expansion campaign as led by its capable ex-Sabena staff and management with its financier and 51% owner Universal Capital Partners (UCP). UCP has already spent over US$5 million and committed an additional US$10 million in cash to the Company's initial operating budget. UCP has also signed leases with major aircraft manufacturers to provide LAIR with at least 5-Airbus 340-300 aircraft by year-end. UCP is a majority shareholder of LAIR. LAIR expects to take delivery of the first two freshly painted jets in April 2003 with the following routes to be serviced: Route 1) Brussels -to- Puntancana (Caribbean - one of the heaviest European tourist destinations currently) Route 2) Yervena -to- LAX (Contracts with Armenian agency to provide this much needed service to be announced upon successful completion of acquisition) Route 3) Toronto -to- Montreal -to- Delhi, India (No competition on this highly lucrative and much needed route as of yet) Three additional Airbus 340's are to be acquired through leases in the Fall of 2003. The carrier proposes to launch new operations from its Brussels hub in April 2003. Ask anyone in the airline industry what is the most promising source of revenue growth with the current political situation and insurance cost nightmare for U.S. and other majors and many will agree that small carriers with high-traffic routes and good low mainte

Can the Internet Save the World?
Forget B-52s. Real power comes from networked hominids tapping keyboards. As a Secretary of State discovered, all it takes to verify an official "story" is to go online and type in a few key search words. Try "powell presentation" or "bush cocaine" -- then hit the key appropriately labeled "Enter". The results can be spectacular. Thanks to a Cambridge professor's recollection and online retrieval, Bush's only buddy willing to send reluctant soldiers into the irradiated ruins of Baghdad could face a humiliating non-confidence vote within days. Former Labour minister Glenda Jackson told BBC Radio 4, "If that was presented to Parliament and the country as being up-to-date intelligence and in fact as we now know they simply lifted it from a university thesis, it is another example of how the Government is attempting to mislead the country and Parliament on the issue of a possible war with Iraq." Another former Labour minister, Peter Kilfoyle, said he was "shocked" at the way the dossier had been doctored. "It just adds to the general impression that what we have been treated to is a farrago of half-truths, assertions and over-the-top spin. I am shocked that on such thin evidence -- a Californian postgraduate thesis -- that we should be trying to convince the British people that this is a war worth fighting." [Telegraph Feb. 8, 2003] The implications for Washington's war plans are serious. If Tony Blair loses a vote brought against him by his own party, the present Prime Minister of England will find himself suddenly unemployed. And Bush will be bereft of major backers. A handful of dust.
Only in the land of the free would a woman be given the opportunity to make the newest super-duper weaponthe thermobaric bomb! Anh Duong, who fled Saigon for the U.S. in 1975, wished to serve her adopted country against tyranny. And in doing so she became the lead bomb-maker at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Indian Head, Maryland, where she is the designer behind the bunker-buster custom-crafted to atomize Osama bin Laden's underground lairs. Duong and her team of bombing boffins worked out the explosive kinks at an accelerated pace, taking only two months to devise the ultra-powerful munition after the Defense Threat Reduction Agency sent out an order for a new fire in the hole. The first was sicced on a Nevada tunnel in December 2001. The test brought the house downturning a regular-looking mine into a really trashed-looking one. The thermobaric bomb's magic ingredient is aluminum dust, also the secret component of another legendary weapon in the arsenal, the behemoth Daisy Cutter. Aluminum, handy foil in your kitchen drawer, is a highly dangerous explosive hazard when powdered. Duong's design duplicates conditions in a mine saturated with the flammable dustand then strikes a match, unleashing a twisting inferno and metal-shredding concussion. Ten thermobaric bombs were commissioned for the war in Afghanistan. One is known to have been used, according to The Baltimore Sun. That round missed, proving that even techno-wizard bangs are useless if one can't aim. Despite publicly reported failure, the legend of the thermobaric bomb is great. Introduced as a wonder weapon by mainstream-media lapdogs, it has also been denounced as a weapon of mass destruction akin to a massive and sinister Russian fuel-air explosive used in Chechnya. One publication dubbed it an anti-Muslim bomb. Not so, said an air force general assigned to spin control. The thermobaric incinerator was vetted by the Pentagon, and, in Kafkaesque wordage, "found consistent with all international legal obligations of the United States, including the law of armed conflict." Straight with the law of armed conflict or not, it is certain the thermobaric bomb is now being eyed for use in Iraq. In Gulf War I, Baghdad bunker-busting backfired when civilians were cooked in a bomb shelter. With the thermobaric bomb, however, one cannot tell if one has hit Saddam or plain folk, because everything in range is . . . dusted. http://www.villagevoice.com/issues/0251/smith.php Aluminium dust was used in the Bali bomb.

And very clearly remember someone locally who died in the emergency room after freaking out on the same batch of acid that seemed quite weird to us, they gave him thorazine and it killed him. Obviously it wasn't LSD. LSD has virtually zero physical toxicity but it's possible someone could die as a result of being hysterical or choking due to psychological stress. Not that likely to happen but there are cases. It has been claimed that DOM ("STP") reacts badly with thorazine but this is now not thought to be the case. It's far likely he died from the thorazine alone since it can cause cardiac arrest. I then came into a large quantity of peyote -- shazaam, no more weirdness. Likewise mushrooms, ayahuasca, etc. And that is why, essentially, blotter acid came into being, because you can't get enough of anything else but LSD on that tiny piece of paper to do *anything*, so it's safe. There have been documented seizures of DOB on blotter (particularly in Australia with its traditionally high street cost of LSD). DOB is a psychedelic which both closely resembles LSD in its effects and approaches LSD in potency (a few hundred micrograms). DOB, unlike most psychedelic drugs like LSD, can be physically toxic but at a massive overdose level (~100 milligrams) which probably wouldn't fit on a blotter. There are a lot more known drugs active at the LSD level in 2002 than 1967 but as a rough rule of thumb you are probably still basically right. The blotter is most likely to contain LSD (often as the freebase) or nothing at all. BTW blotter is unstable and likely to have a short shelf life. Microdots (containing salts) are likely to last for years. I'll grant, however, that bad trips seem to occur much more on 'cid than on natural substances. I think you are just generalising from your personal experience which may not hold for others. It's just the same as some people claiming particular alcoholic drinks are better or worse than others. The key thing about these drugs is the effects are intensively subjective and highly unpredictable. The dosage level is more likely to be related to adverse effects than the particular psychedelic drug used. In double blind tests, where neither the doctor nor the subject knows which drug is which, people can't distinguish major psychedelic drugs anyway. The only clear distinction is the duration of drug effect which does vary. This is usually denied by users of these drugs despite numerous studies supporting this since the late 1960s. Set and setting have more to do with it than anything. People who partake in Sure. Leary was right on that one. -- Steve Mynott <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

There's a reason Hitler confiscated guns held privately by >Germans.) You are correct about the conspicuous absence of the mention of guns. Just not politically correct. Too much connection to individual action and power, which whether good, bad or indifferent is the enemy of passive submission to the state. But you damage your accurate point by accompanying it with the erroneous, but often repeated claim about Hitler confiscating guns. The Waffengesetz of March 18, 1938 did not confiscate guns from German citizens. (Of course, Jewish people were not considered German citizens under the law at that time.) There was no need to confiscate guns from the population in general. Hitler was immensely popular with Germans, and the Weimar Republic had enacted some gun control in 1928, before Hitler gained power in 1933. The "Hitler Confiscation of Guns" is pure urban legend, that attempts to link gun registration and confiscation with evil's 20th Centure poster boy. It's bogus. "The German law certainly was not an ideal one from the viewpoint of today's beleaguered American patriot, because it did have certain licensing requirements. A permit (Waffenerwerbschein) was required to buy a handgun (but not a long gun), and a separate license (Waffenschein), good for three years, was required to carry any firearm in public. Actually, the German law was less restrictive than most state and local laws in the United States were before the current campaign to nullify the Second Amendment shifted into high gear in 1993. More significantly, it ameliorated a law which had been enacted ten years earlier by a Left-Center government hostile to the National Socialists (the government headed by Wilhelm Marx and consisting of a coalition of Socialists and Catholic Centrists). The 1938 law irritated the Jews by pointedly excluding them from the firearms business, but it clearly was not a law aimed at preventing the ownership or use of firearms, including handguns, for either sporting or self-defense purposes by German citizens. As noted above, it actually relaxed or eliminated the provisions of a pre-existing law. The facts, in brief, are these: The National Socialist government of Germany did not fear its citizens. Adolf Hitler was the most popular leader Germany has ever had. The spirit of National Socialism was one of manliness, and individual self-defense and self-reliance were central to the National Socialist view of the way a citizen should behave. The notion of banning firearms ownership was alien to National Socialism. Gun registration and licensing (for long guns as well as for handguns) were legislated by an anti-National Socialist government in Germany five years before the National Socialists gained power. Five years after they gained power they got around to rewriting the gun law enacted by their predecessors, substantially ameliorating it in the process (for example, long guns were exempted from the requirement for a purchase permit; the legal age for gun ownership was lowered from 20 to 18 years; and the period of validity of a permit to carry weapons was extended from one to three years). They may be criticized for leaving certain restrictions and licensing requirements in the law, but they had no intention of preventing law-abiding Germans from keeping or bearing arms. The highlights of the 1938 German Weapons Law (which in its entirety fills 12 pages of the Reichsgesetzblatt with legalese), especially as it applied to ordinary citizens rather than manufacturers or dealers, follow: Handguns may be sold or purchased only on submission of a Weapons Acquisition Permit (Waffenerwerbschein), which must be used within one year from the date of issue. Muzzle-loading handguns are exempted from the permit requirement. Holders of a permit to carry weapons (Waffenschein) or of a hunting license do not need a Weapons Acquisition Permit in order to acquire a handgun. A hunting license authorizes its bearer to carry hunting weapons and handguns. Firearms and ammunition, as well as swords and knives, may not be sold to minors under the age of 18 years. Whoever carries a firearm outside of his dwelling, his place of employment, his place of business, or his fenced property must have on his person a Weapons Permit (Waffenschein). A permit is not required, however, for carrying a firearm for use at a police-approved shooting range. A permit to acquire a handgun or to carry firearms may only be issued to persons whose trustworthiness is not in question and who can show a need for a permit. In particular, a permit may not be issued to:

Early on, LSD never came in anything less than 250 mics, and frequently higher. By the time that people were mixing speed with it, actual dosages were much less (adding amphetamines to 250mic LSD is fairly pointless) and today most, from what I hear, are around 75-100 mic. Major difference and really rather worthless, unless you take 4 or so tabs of blotter. If you don't take enough to break through, you might as well take speed. > > But then again, taking 'cid and wandering the streets of New York City has > to be a lot more bad-trip-inducing than taking it in more rural settings. Hardly. Well, wandering around anywhere is not a good idea -- set and setting are extremely important. I well recall once, on some very clean and potent LSD, walking in the woods outside a friends house on the outskirts of Madison, and getting caught in a patch of blackberrys. I not only couldn't free myself, but the vines began to grow rapidly, wrapping around my legs and torso. I was vastly relieved when Ranger Dick showed up to lend a hand, and calmly unsnagged me from their lecherous grasp. But again -- wandering around the streets? Going into bars, etc. -- worst thing to do -- these are not party drugs. > (And, there are some personality types that I know really couldn't handle > LSD. Best thing that could happen to the world would be the development of a benign airforce that sprayed a fog of lsd/dmso on areas like Palestine. Real LSD, that is. Threats to the President a Stupid Security Award Winner?
KILL the PRESIDENT! What's the World's Most Stupid Security Measure? By John Leyden Posted: 11/02/2003 at 11:35 GMT Human rights watchdog Privacy International has launched a quest to find the World's Most Stupid Security Measure. The global competition will identify what the group describes as the most "pointless, intrusive, annoying and self-serving" security measures. The "Stupid Security" award aims to highlight the absurdities of the security industry. Privacy International's director, Simon Davies, said his group has taken the initiative because of "innumerable" security initiatives around the world that had absolutely no genuine security benefit. "The situation has become ridiculous," said Mr Davies. "Security has become the smokescreen for incompetent and robotic managers the world over". "I have stood for ages in a security line at an inconsequential office building and grilled relentlessly only to be given a security pass that a high school student could have faked. And I resent being forced to take off my shoes at an airport that can't even screen its luggage", he said. Even before 9/11 a whole army of bumbling amateurs has taken it upon themselves to figure out pointless, annoying, intrusive, illusory and just plain stupid measures to "protect" our security. Privacy International reckons jobsworths have become a global menace. "From the nightclub in Berlin that demands the home address of its patrons, to the phone company in Britain that won't let anyone pay more than twenty pounds a month from a bank account, the world has become infested with bumptious administrators competing to hinder or harass us," it reports. There are real concerns about security, of course. Privacy International argues that unworkable security laws and illusory security measures do nothing to help issues of real public concern. They only hinder the public and intrude unnecessary into our private lives, the organisation believes. Privacy International, the outfit behind the Big Brother awards, is calling for nominations on the candidates for the silliest security measures. Nomination should be sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED]by March 15. Nominations should be as specific as possible, mentioning the name of the guilty parties, and wherever possible, including evidence and references. Any government or private sector initiative or action can be nominated. Legislation and technology can also be nominated. The judges welcome nominations in the form of narratives and anecdotes. The competition is to be judged by a panel of well-known security experts, public policy specialists, privacy advocates and journalists. "Winners" will be announced at the thirteenth Computers, Freedom & Privacy conference in New York on April 3. ® External Links The stupid security award page http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/55/29279.html

I crave your indulgence as I contact you in such a surprising manner. I respectfully insist that you read this letter carefully, as I am optimistic that it will open doors for unimaginable financial rewards for both of us. My name is Michael T. Konan. I am presently the Director of project execution in Federal Ministry of Petroleum and Natural resources here in Nigeria. By virtue of my privileged position in the Ministry and in government I was among the few technocrats who awarded contract for the Turn Around Maintenance (T.A.M) of some major Oil Refineries in Nigeria during the Military Regime. These contract amounted to US$250M (Two Hundred and Fifty Million U.S Dollars). While the negotiations of the contracts were going on, we the Civil Servants manipulated figures and inflated the contracts. We made an inflation of 10% of the total contracts sum with the sole aim of diverting the 10%(US$25Million) for our own use with the intention of presenting a Sub Contractor to get the money out. We now wish to present you as the Sub Contractor to get the money transferred from the Apex Bank of our country to any where in Europe,Asia or America for onward transfer into your nominated Private/Company bank account that you may present to us any where in the World. We have decided that after the US$25M has been successfully paid into your account, then we will travel to your Country to meet you for the sharing of the money as follow: 1. 30% for your assistance and co-operation. 2. 70% as our own share. We hope you will assist us and we pray that you will be honest and trust worthy to us because we are entrusting you with a huge sum of money and we ask you to treat this letter in the strictest confidence. Every arrangement have been made to collect this money as the Federal Government is currently paying all owed contractors - both Local and Foreign. NOTE: This transaction is 100% risk free because we have carefully concluded all the ground works for the successful transfer of this money to your account. Therefore, you should not have any fear in you. BUT FOR THE SUCCESFUL CONCLUTION OF THIS TRANSACTION WITHOUT ANY PROBLEM FOR US, YOU SHOULD PLEASE KEEP THIS TRANSACTION AS SECRET AND AS CONFIDENTIAL AS POSSIBLE.PLEASE THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. RSA to sue over rumours?
In a case that pits free speech against a company's right to defend its reputation, Metric Companies Inc. has sued two former employees over postings on Internet message boards. In lawsuits filed in federal court in Tulsa, Okla., Minnetonka-based Metris claims the employees posted defamatory and misleading messages about Metris and its recently ousted CEO, Ronald Zebeck. The cases allege libel and violations of securities laws. Metris claims the employees, both of whom worked at the company's Tulsa office, posted the messages under several anonymous user names to give the impression they were privy to inside information. Jeff Nix, attorney for one of the defendants, calls the lawsuits the equivalent of "going after a couple (of) mosquitoes with an elephant gun." It's an increasingly popular form of hunting among U.S. companies. While no one keeps a running total of such suits, one expert said they now number in the hundreds and many have been successful in stopping people from posting messages without ever going to trial. "Most defense attorneys request $10,000 or higher in initial retainers. Companies have the dollars to prosecute these frivolous lawsuits. The result is that the defendants are in a financial situation where they are forced to cave in," said Les French, executive director of the Anonymous Internet Foundation. French's group and other civil liberties and privacy groups oppose the so-called SLAPPs Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation and last summer called on Internet service providers to adopt policies to protect their users' rights to anonymous speech on the Internet. "Our concern has been that these lawsuits are brought to silence people who are saying things that the company doesn't like," said Cindy Cohn, legal director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation. The amount of Internet chatter about publicly traded companies has grown along with the use of the Web and general interest in stocks. While most of the messages are harmless, companies are concerned about the spread of what they argue is false or confidential information via the Internet. Sometimes offered by disgruntled shareholders or employees, the postings also can come from "pump and dump" artists who are seeking to boost or depress stock prices for their own profit. In the Metris case, the struggling credit card company contends that as a result of the postings it has lost revenue, income, investors, customers and relations with business prospects. The lawsuits ask for a stop to the Internet postings and seek unspecified compensatory and punitive damages. Metris, which fired Zebeck in December, declined to comment on the lawsuits, both filed late last year. In court documents the defendants said their messages were simply viewpoints that opposed Metris' company line. They said they didn't profit by posting the messages and deny they were the cause of Metris' problems. Metris, which issues credit cards to people with short or patchy credit histories, recently reported a $34 million loss for 2002. The company has said its problems stem from the depressed economy, which has left many moderate-income customers hard-pressed to pay their credit card bills.

Finally, if you agree to assist/co-operate with us,then you can reply me immediately by sending your reply to my e-mail. Yours faithfully, Michael T. Konan [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I recall having some very strange experiences which caused me to decide to stop taking "LSD". That's interesting, actually. I remember getting some very high purity windowpane, and the effect was even calming. The "bad trips" seem to have been associated with acid-mixed-with-speed in general. But then again, taking 'cid and wandering the streets of New York City has to be a lot more bad-trip-inducing than taking it in more rural settings. (And, there are some personality types that I know really couldn't handle LSD. These are the ones that need constant control over their social surroundings.) And very clearly remember someone locally who died in the emergency room after freaking out on the same batch of acid that seemed quite weird to us, they gave him thorazine and it killed him. Obviously it wasn't LSD. Indeed there are tons of questionable anti-drug propaganda stories out there. Like claims that Ecstacy is dangerous, despite the fact the RIGHT NOW there's probably millions of kids around the world high on it, and probably none of them will die. (The danger almost certainly comes from the fact that petty mobsters and whatnot make it in their basement.) As for LSD driving people batty, I believe it, but then again those it drove batty I think already had the seeds of battiness down deep before hand...acid was basically just "miracle grow" on those seeds (and LSD-induced battiness requires a LOT of acid). Then again, a HighSchool buddy of mine took it about 300 times in HS and college and he remains as blase as always. -TD "Stuy's High!" _ The new MSN 8: advanced junk mail protection and 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail

"This is bloody mad."
War mad, says ex-defence head By IAN McPHEDRAN, defence reporter 12feb03 A RETIRED defence chief has accused the Howard Government of madness in pursuing war against Iraq. Former Chief of Defence Admiral Alan Beaumont said there was no justification for war without United Nations backing, and little justification for war with it. He also warned the military campaign could be long and bloody and attacked the Government for promoting a low-casualty operation. "This is bloody mad," Admiral Beaumont told the Herald Sun yesterday. "I don't understand how it is in the national interest to kow-tow to the US." Admiral Beaumont said despite lack of evidence on Iraq's weapons stockpile, Australia was now fully integrated into US war plans and would be unable to back out. He said he had discussed the war with about 30 former military chiefs and all were against a campaign without a UN mandate. "No one I know supports the Government's position," he said. Retired Major-General Alan Stretton said he could not understand why Australia was meekly following the US to war. http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5478,5970533^661,00.html

Fight your own fucking wars!
10 February 2003 ] One in five reservists is resisting call-up for war UK: 'One in five of the military reservists called up in preparation for a possible war in Iraq has asked to be excused from duty or simply ignored the order' ( Independent ) » See also this text of the Reserve Forces Act 1996, and this blog entry from last month.LINKS? http://www.hullocentral.demon.co.uk/site/anfin.htm Three crew of the HMAS Kanimbla headed to the Middle East have left the ship after refusing to take an anthrax vaccination, one of them claimed last night. Able Seaman Simon Bond, an electrical engineer, said he and two others had been airlifted from the Kanimbla after refusing to take the vaccination. After receiving information from a family member at home about Gulf War syndrome, he decided against taking the vaccine. The Kanimbla's crew were asked to sign a consent form and have the vaccination a day after sailing from Darwin. Sent back to Sydney, Able Seaman Bond (pictured) told ABC TV's 7:30 Report last night that the ship's engineer had warned him he would be moved from his home port to Perth and face further action if he refused the vaccine. He said he took the engineer's comments as a direct threat against his career in the navy. "Bloody oath I did, if that's not saying if you don't take the injection we're going to try and stuff you over then I don't know what is," Able Seaman Bond said. "If you walked into a doctor in civvy street and he gave you this information, there is no way in hell you'd let him jab it into you." The Kanimbla is now in the Indian Ocean. A defence force spokesman, Brigadier Mike Hannan, said any crew failing to take the vaccine would be removed for their own safety. He denied action would be taken against those who refused the vaccine. http://smh.com.au/articles/2003/02/12/1044927607793.html Remember the Checko troops that took up the offer of a flight home from kuwait

Re: Something conspicuously missing from the media survival lists
My point was that a gun is an item for an emergency, not that everyone who does not now have one should buy one. Nor was my point addressing the issue of "what would happen if everyone tried to buy one suddenly!?" On Tuesday, February 11, 2003, at 12:43 PM, Trei, Peter wrote: Three points: 1. About half of US households have guns already. It's safe to assume that they will defend themselves if TSHTF. And my point is that mention of a gun in a set of emergency supplies is expected, except where the press is gun-phobic. 2. For the half which don't, a very large number of them consist of people with no firearms experience (especially since the draft ended 30 years ago), no knowledge of gun maintenance and safety, or training in how, when, and when not to use them. This overstates the dangers and care required for a gun by a wide margin. Guns are very simple, require almost no maintenance (I know friends/family who have never cleaned or oiled their guns, and yet they work fine when the trigger is pulled). 3. The supply isn't there. Guns last a very long time, and rarely need to be replaced. As a result, the stockpile of available unsold guns is much smaller than the size of the unarmed populace. Beware the "but what if _everyone_ thought that way?" logical fallacy. And apply your reasoning to some of those other emergency kit items being recommended, e.g., a spare pair of glasses: "But if everybody tried to get eyeglass prescriptions filled, think of the chaos at Lenscrafters and Pearlevision? It would be diastrous. Just the traffic jams alone would cripple the economy." By the way, having looked at the inventory of several of the local gun shops, each has several hundred guns on display. More are in warehouses. A surge in gun buying, should it happen, would likely result in millions of handguns and rifles being shipped out of warehouses and depots to gun stores. Furthermore, many gun owners have dozens of handguns and rifles. (One friend of mine has a dozen handguns and 40 rifles. I myself have...well, a lot.) A modest increase in prices, such as would be expected if the "supply isn't there" market situation were true, would likely result in a lot of people deciding they'd be happy to sell that old .38 Special they've moved beyond for a modest $300. Or that old .30-30 lever action for $250. A hundred million handguns and rifles could come out of closets--without depleting the owners of more serious and modern firepower--in weeks. Not that this will happen. Most people won't get the first aid kit or water purification systems the emergency kit reports are recommended, so they wouldn't get a gun either. My point was that not mentioning guns is "the dog that didn't bark." Advising on emergency kits to deal with disruptions of food, water, and power but mentioning _nothing_ about defense, is telling. Even if they live in a state where it's legal to do so without getting a license from the state first, telling the sheeple to rush out and buy shotguns would probably lose more lives to accidents than it would save, if Walmart etal didn't run out of stock first. Doubtful, but I dealt with these issues above. --Tim May "That government is best which governs not at all." --Henry David Thoreau

[...] Your point is well taken, but: Three points: 1. About half of US households have guns already. It's safe to assume that they will defend themselves if TSHTF. 2. For the half which don't, a very large number of them consist of people with no firearms experience (especially since the draft ended 30 years ago), no knowledge of gun maintenance and safety, or training in how, when, and when not to use them. 3. The supply isn't there. Guns last a very long time, and rarely need to be replaced. As a result, the stockpile of available unsold guns is much smaller than the size of the unarmed populace. Even if they live in a state where it's legal to do so without getting a license from the state first, telling the sheeple to rush out and buy shotguns would probably lose more lives to accidents than it would save, if Walmart etal didn't run out of stock first. I'm not saying they shouldn't have the freedom to do so - far from it. But I don't think it's practical advice. Peter Trei

Except that there are so few of those no one has ever been able to quantify/qualify them, so we don't know what that really consists of. When you say "those" are you referring to bad acid trips? (Don't tell me you've never had one!) I'll grant, however, that bad trips seem to occur much more on 'cid than on natural substances. But I'll also point out that its on the bad trips where the "Emporer's New Clothes" are most obviously yanked away, and we SEE that all the stuff we thought held us together was more or less arbitrary or self-defeating. Unfortunately, some folks are so dependent on those illusions that they can not handle their removal, even for 4-8 hours or so, so they freak. -TD PS: It was along these lines that my comparison of a bad trip to 9/11 was meant. Something conspicuously missing from the media survival lists
Here in war-preparing America, reports are running on CNN, CNBC, CBS, and presumably other networks about the importance of some basic emergency supplies for all good citizen-units. This is mostly good advice, of course. Being a paranoid and a kind of survivalist, I already have first aid kits, spare water, batteries, flashlights, warm clothing, duct tape and plastic sheets, spare eyeglasses, and the other items being recommended by the experts. In fact, I have a _lot_ more than this. The idea is that the some attack by the Evil Doers in the Axis of Evil may come after the U.S. begins carpet-bombing Baghdad or Tehran or Pyongyang. Unspoken is the possibility that one of the various powderkegs may lead to a larger war. Disruption of supply lines, even civil disorder, could occur. The news channels are right in spending a couple of minutes a day talking about basic preparedness for a several day disruption. However, there's one basic item they conspicuously neglect to mention. That Item Whose Name May Not Be Spoken on Television: a gun. If there's disruption, looting, a breakdown in what now passes for civil order, a gun is just about the most important thing to have. Probably not necessary to use it, for 99.5% of everyone, but then most of the emergency things like plastic sheets and medical supplies probably won't be needed, either. But in postmodern America mentioning guns is simply NOT DONE. Not even on the Fox Network, a more rightward network than the others. Lose 32 pounds by March
Hello ! If you're like me, you've tried EVERYTHING to lose weight. I know how you feel - the special diets, miracle pills, and fancy exercise equipment never helped me lose a pound either. It seemed like the harder I tried, the bigger I got, until I heard about a product called Power Diet Plus. You're probably thinking to yourself, "Oh geez, not another miracle diet pill!" Like you, I was skeptical at first, but my sister swore it helped her lose 23 pounds in just two weeks, so I told her I'd give it a shot. I mean, there was nothing to lose except a lot of weight! Let me tell you, it was the best decision I've ever made. Period. Six months later, as I'm writing this message to you, I've gone from 355 pounds to 210 pounds, and I haven't changed my exercise routine or diet at all. Yes, I still eat pizza, and lots of it! I was so happy with the results that I contacted the manufacturer and got permission to resell it - at a BIG discount. I want to help other people lose weight like I did, because it does so much for your self-esteem, not to mention your health. I give you my personal pledge that Power Diet Plus absolutely WILL WORK FOR YOU. If it doesn't, you can return it any time for a full refund. If you are frustrated with trying other products, not having any success, and just not getting the results you were promised, then I recommend the only product that worked for me - POWER DIET PLUS. You're probably asking yourself, "Ok, so how does this stuff actually work?" Power Diet Plus contains Lipotropic fat burners which are scientifically proven to increase metabolism and cause rapid weight loss. No "hocus pocus" in these pills - just RESULTS, RESULTS, RESULTS!! Here is the bottom line ... I can help you lose 10-15 pounds per week naturally, without exercising and without having to eat rice cakes all day. Just try it for one month - there's nothing to lose, and everything to gain. You will lose weight fast - GUARANTEED. That is my pledge to you. Snake Oil That Will Not Die
Oh look, it's a brand new fluff piece on Meganet and their Virtual Matrix Encryption, deconstructed years ago in various forums, including this one. http://www.inet-one.com/cypherpunks/dir.1998.01.01-1998.01.07/msg00047.html Why on earth is the Department of Labor giving them money? Meganet now claims that "all other encryption methods have been compromised" - except for theirs, of course. Titter. http://www.israel21c.org/bin/en.jsp?enPage=BlankPage&enDisplay=view&enDispWhat=object&enDispWho=Articles%5El306&enZone=Technology&enVersion=0&; - Company develops unbreakable data encryption code By Nicky Blackburn February 09, 2003 Meganet has won a $4 million tender to supply the U.S. Department of Labor with information encryption and digital signatures for its 18,000 employees. Meganet, an Israeli-U.S. data security company, has developed an encryption technology that appears to be unbreakable, enabling governments and corporations, to keep their data safely out of the hands of competitors, thieves and saboteurs. Among the clients that believe in their ability to protect sensitive information is the U.S. government ... Meganet Corporation's founder, Saul Backal, claims that its solution can put an end to these problems. Meganet offers a patented non-linear data mapping technology, called VME (Virtual Matrix Encryption), that creates exceptionally random cipher text and combines it with a one million-bit key, which is unheard of in today's data security markets. Competing solutions offer a maximum of 256 bits. "There is nothing stronger in existence," says 38-year-old Backal, a dual Israeli-U.S. citizen who was a tank commander in the IDF in the Lebanon war. Re: [IP] Open Source TCPA driver and white papers (fwd)

There will be no TCPA without TPM. And there will be no TCPA-enabled system with complete user control. Just look at the main specification: - users can't access nor alter the Endorsement Key - the TPM can't be disabled completely. This allows operating systems that bind ("product activation" ?) themselves to an unique TPM and refuse to start if it's not fully activated. If a system doesn't meet these reqirements (as the IBM paper suggests) it isn't a TCPA system. > > Therefore for DRM purposes TCPA and Palladium are both socially bad > > technologies. > > It's bad only if the *user* does not have control over their own machines. > If each enterprise can control their own machines, completely > independently of all other external organizations, then TCPA could be > really useful. If only Bill Gates controls all machines, it's bad for the > rest of us (but pretty damn good for Bill!!) TCPA uses some interesting possibilities that may enhance system security. But with the current specifications, it likely destroys any privacy that's left on todays systems. -- Michel Messerschmidt [EMAIL PROTECTED] antiVirusTestCenter, Computer Science, University of Hamburg

RE: Forced Oaths to Pieces of Cloth
> While I have a lot of problem with the Pledge in any form, I think it > would be greatly improved if it were made to the Constitution, rather > than the flag. But wouldn't that hint to these children that they may actually have to think ? You don't have to think of a flag, you just react with (preprepared) emotions, but with a constitution... I once went to the US, in a family, for a couple of weeks, and went to high school there. I didn't know about it then, and it really took me by surprise. The whole classroom standing up to the sound the loudspeaker, like some show of warmongering made for TV in some dictatorial country. Eerie. Best of all was, we were a group of french people one day, in the library, and this happened again. We looked at each other, and tacitly decided to continue our stuff, silently, without at all disrupting their ceremony. No more than two minutes after the end of it, we got the head of the library come to us, knowing we were french, and telling us we *had* to do it... That was *years* ago. You bet that after that, some people forget to think altogether and refer back to this thorough brainwashing they had when they were kids. -- Vincent Penquerc'h
