FCC Tests Reception for Lifting Owner Limits
Roadshow Gets Lots of Corporate Static
By Marc Fisher
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, February 28, 2003; Page C01
RICHMOND, Feb. 27 -- Somewhere out here, way beyond the Beltway, where
the real America lives, are the People, the mythic folk for whom
Washington toils. And despite the snow and the ice, the four men and one
woman of the Federal Communications Commission traveled today to find
those People and to glean from them just how ticked off or tickled they
might be about the bland pap or the fine entertainment that they watch on
TV and listen to on the radio.
The commissioners slipped and slid their way to Virginia's capital to
give the public its one chance to stand before them and instruct the feds
on whether it really matters if one company owns most of the radio
stations in town, or if a handful of companies control nearly every show
on TV. By May, the commission expects to decide whether to lift all
remaining restrictions on media ownership.
Do the People care who owns their TV and radio stations, who feeds them
their media gruel? By midday, 195 of the People had made their way to the
convention center here. One hundred nineteen of them were white men in
suits; many of those men were grumbling about the trip down from
Washington. Twenty-two people were scheduled to address the commission;
13 of them had traveled here from the District.
But Anthony Mazza and his friends had made it in from Philadelphia, where
they have grown so tired of bland broadcast fare that they attached
cardboard TV set frames to their heads and sat in the hearing room
wearing blue lab coats -- their protest against 500 channels of nothing
to watch.
"Listeners are turning off the radio in huge numbers and the media
companies don't care," Mazza says, "because the only thing that
matters to them is getting their share of whatever audience there
is." Mazza, 30 and unemployed, has a show on Radio Volta, a small
community station in Philadelphia that lets him play everything from
hard-core hip-hop to old country songs to swing-era jazz. It's all his
choice, radio the way it used to be, one person programming for whoever
might listen.

Black Flag in the Heartland.

2003-02-28 Thread professor rat
A new flag's waving in town by Nicole Le Clerc
"Sure, revolution," said Rob Galleon, co-founder of the recently formed
ReAct Community Center at 1415 Farnam St. "We'd like to see a more
empowered community. Omaha is very plutocratic. There's a big division
between the rich and the poor, and that is something that we would like to
see remedied."

A solid black flag waves outside ReAct. Beneath it are cardboard boxes.
Some are filled with food such as bagels and apples, and some with
clothing. Handwritten signs read, "Eat me," like the cake in Alice in
Wonderland, or "Free." Posters, which include such phrases as "Stop War
Live Free" or an image of a woman breastfeeding a baby with the words
"resistance is fertile," hang above the boxes on the storefront windows.
Young ReActors sometimes stand outside smoking as two more signs are posted
on the door: "No Smoking No Drinking" and "No Sleeping."

Startup At 23 the oldest group member, Galleon, along with Tony Young,
Jessica Medura and Ryan Nash, established ReAct six months ago with $1,500.
Combining "Resource" and "Activity," the center's name was created and the
non-profit community center/"infoshop" doors opened. Infoshops began in the
1990s in Europe as an effort to offer the public additional information not
provided through mainstream media outlets.

Inside, a desk, some bookcases, second-hand couches and furniture are
arranged in the front of the space. Words such as "capitalist," "Iraq" and
"corporate" are often heard, following a brief "hello" from whomever
happens to be near the door. Pamphlets, mission statement, fliers for
future events and a notebook to sign up for their e-mail list are set
neatly on the desk. Bookcases contain books and vitamins. A little farther
back, a small kitchen with some herbs hanging to dry half-partition this
space from the larger space, which is mostly empty except for more
furniture and a few bikes. Although a clean space, a vague odor of
vegetables or perhaps a compost for their future garden lingers in the air.

Anti-Globalization Books, pamphlets, community meetings, movie screenings
and The Anti-War Show: The Art of Peace that opened Feb. 22 are ways ReAct
hopes to reach people, including the homeless. Most of their work thus far
has been directed toward those living on the street. ReAct works with Food
Not Bombs, a movement that began in Cambridge, Mass., in 1980 and spread
throughout the United States, Europe and Australia, preparing hot,
vegetarian food for anyone who wants it. In Omaha, Food Not Bombs has been
operating for about six years.

"A lot of us have been involved in the anti-globalization movement,"
Galleon said. "We had been seeing a lot of protesting and spectacles being
created, but we hadn't really seen any community-building happening, so we
wanted to start engaging a little bit more counterinstitution-building,"
Galleon said. "We thought that by putting together a community center that
we'd be able to provide a foundation to start building upon some of the
politics that we preach, try to put our theory into practice."

Although anti-capitalism and anti-globalization are what drive the ideas
behind ReAct, volunteer Rory Rehab pointed out, "This place isn't just for
anti-capitalists or people in the anti-globalization movement, just for
anyone who cares about humanitarian issues. Anyone can come out and help.
There's a lot of people who really don't agree with some of the people who
are working with the shop who completely disagree with our views, but they
come out and help."

The center has even piqued the curiosity of some U.S. Airforce members
stationed at Offutt Airforce Base in Bellevue. "I think that if we can
reach people out on the base, then we can reach anywhere in this
community," Galleon said.

Help Them Help Themselves "We're primarily interested in empowerment and
helping people think for themselves," he explained. "That's what
differentiates us from a lot of the leftist or liberal groups. We don't
want to go into people's communities or approach people to tell them what
to do; we want to provide the people with the resources and the knowledge
to act and think for themselves. We tell people to get their own initiative."

"Food Not Bombs is a movement that tries to address the root cause of
homelessness and poverty," Galleon said. "The shelters and the food banks,
they're doing great work, but I think they're only putting a Band-aid on
the situation. What we try to do is help empower a lot of the homeless
people. We have homeless people who come here and help us, and we try to
work with them. We try to approach them as human beings instead of just
people who live on the streets."

Hopeful to help the homeless gain more independence. Rehab plans on
establishing a community garden teaching them how to grow their own food.
Rehab supported Galleon, but acknowledged, "Most of the homeless we work
with have really bad problems wi

The objective of the United States is that of imposing its political and
economic hegemony, installing a protectorate with the purpose of
controlling the oil resources and this way to guarantee the interests of
the multinationals.

The immediate consequences of a war against Iraq, will be felt, in the
first place, by the Iraqi population that will suffer it. The dictator
Sadam Husein and his generals will be well under cover.

We will also suffer the consequences in other countries:

*An increase in the military budget and decrease in social spending.

*Reinforcement of the repression against all those who are opposed,
particularly the syndicalists.

The syndicalist movement should sustain and impel the fights against the war.

The demonstrations, such as those organized throughout the world on
February 15th, are a point of important support, because they show that we
are dozens of millions in the world who we reject the dictates of the
American government and of military.

We have solidarity with all the workers who refuse to participate in the
preparation of warfare and declare their conscientious objection.

We sustain the resistance actions that are being carried out in all Europe:
the blockade of military trains, refusing to allow the NATO fleet to dock.

The syndicalist movement has the responsibility of amplifying the
mobilisation against the war, in particular inside the companies.

In Italy the slogan “strike against the war” is today sustained by most of
the union movement. This question should be discussed with the wage earners
of all the countries of Europe as a form of decisive action to oppose the war.

Strike, new massive demonstrations of citizens throughout the world,
actions in the neighbourhoods, factories, government buildings... they can
make the American government and their allies recoil.

"damn Americans, I hate those bastards."

2003-02-28 Thread professor rat

Muzzle Rumsfeld,Wolfowitz is a liar.HaHaHa...You seppo's deserve a major
league kick in the asshole.
The Liberal backbencher made an off-the-cuff remark at the end of a media
scrum on Parliament Hill, saying "damn Americans, I hate those
bastards."
The Drudge Report, a popular U.S. Web site linked to the story on cbc.ca,
and the e-mails came flooding in.
A similar response from Americans happened in November, when Prime
Minister Jean Chrétien's communications director, Francoise Ducros was
overheard calling U.S. President George W. Bush a "moron."

Ducros eventually resigned. Parrish has apologized.
More angry U.S. letters came in reaction to a CBC Online story on
Canadians going to Baghdad to serve as human shields, also featured on
The Drudge Report.
Many of the U.S. writers responded to the comments by attacking Canada
and Canadians as irrelevant, and dependant upon the United States. Others
dredged up the unproven allegations that Canada is a terrorist haven, and
a source of the hijackers on Sept. 11, ignoring the facts that all those
men resided and learned to fly in the United States.
"We know how you feel about us. We know what kind of friend your
country is when we need you," wrote Randy Egan, from Naples,
Florida.
Some Canadians are indignant over those sorts of comments.
"Who came to the rescue of thousands of displaced Americans on Sept.
11, when airspace was closed over the U.S.? Answer: the Canadians,"
wrote Debbie Burton.
"Whose troops were sent to Afghanistan to support your War on
Terror? Answer: the Canadians. Whose troops were killed and maimed by
'friendly fire' when American pilots disregarded the rules of engagement?
Answer: the Canadians."
But American writers are apparently unmoved by the contributions made by
Canada on the world stage.
"I smile every time I read another Canadian in 'authority' make yet
another snide comment about America or Americans. I smile because without
America and Americans your mouths would be absolutely shut. To quote a
famous American movie: 'You sleep under the very blanket of freedom we
provide,'" wrote Matthew B. Simpson.
Simpson refers to A Few Good Men. The quotation reads: "I have
neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises
and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom I provide and then
questions the manner in which I provide it."
Some writers suggest Canadian politicians have every right to question
U.S. foreign policy.
"While so many government officials of all nations are pussy-footing
around the U.S. so as not to incur their wrath, they are given free reign
to be the schoolyard bullies they are," writes Nancy Stephen, a
Canadian. "I say congratulations to Carolyn Parrish and I wish there
were more politicians in this country with enough backbone to say it, and
allow her to say it, out loud."
Other Canadians shared the outrage of their American colleagues, however.

"She ought to resign," writes Dinah Victoria. "She is
giving comfort to a brutal dictator who kills millions of his own people
and threatens the world."
A writer from Pennsylvania, however, doesn't even believe Parrish ought
to have apologized. "If she hates us, I'd rather her say it and at
least have the guts to stick to it," wrote David J. Crook. "I'd
rather be aware of honest hate rather than the smarmy lies of a pretended
friend."
At least one U.S. writer was sanguine about the issue.
"Hey, as U.S. citizen, I am not offended by what Ms. Parrish
said," wrote Dave Lister, of Boise, Idaho. "Sometimes the
closest of friends say mean things about each other, especially siblings…
That is how I view Canada and the U.S.: two close siblings that have
their occasional quarrels but will patch things up.
"By the way, my Canadian friends taught me long ago that they are
Americans, too, since we both occupy the North American continent."

Dear Sir,

I know that this message will come to you as a surprise since we do not
know or seen each other before, but for purpose of introduction, I am
MR.LADAN MAMMAN, the Bank Manager of UNION BANK OF NIGERIA (UBN).

After going through some old files in my office, I discovered there is
an account opened in this bank in 1980 and since 1991 to date nobody has
operated on this account again. Therefore, if I do not remit this money
out urgently it would be forfeited or confiscated for nothing. The owner
of this account is Mr. WALTER B.Andreas, a foreigner {Geologist by
profession}, and a Miner at Kruger gold co., who died since 1990.

Since his death, no other person knows about this account nor any thing
concerning it, the account has no other beneficiary and my investigation
proved to me as well that his company does not know anything about this
account. The amount involved in the said account is Twenty Six Million
United States Dollars only (USD 26M). I am only contacting you as a
foreigner because this money cannot be approved to a local bank here,
but any foreign account because the money is in US Dollars and the

Maybe Kuwait? How is democracy and freedom faring there more
than a decade after the first Iraq war? Can women vote there?
No? Has there been an election, or it is still a hereditary
dictatorship? Oh, the latter. I see... Maybe it wasn't about

Applied Crypto: question on skid3

2003-02-28 Thread MindFuq
I have a question on what seems to be a defect in the Applied Crypto
book, and I couldn't get an answer out of Schneier. Could any of you
please clarify my issue?

My question is regarding Schneier's write up of SKID3 on page 56. He
states that the protocol is not secure against man-in-the-middle
attacks because no secrets are involved. I'm finding this hard to
accept, because SKID3 uses a MAC, which requires a shared secret key
between the two parties. I played out the scenario, and cannot see
how a man in the middle could attack w/out knowing the secret key used
in the MAC.

This was slashdotted - sorry for the spam if you've already seen this, but
it's damned interesting reading - especially contrasted to current US

Hi Guys.

OK, hard to believe, but true. Yours truely has been hobnobbing with the
ruling class.

I spent a week in Davos, Switzerland at the World Economic Forum. I was
awarded a special pass which allowed me full access to not only the
entire official meeting, but also private dinners with the likes the
head of the Saudi Secret Police, presidents of various insundry
countries, your Fortune 500 CEOS and the leaders of the most important
NGOs in the world. This was not typical press access. It was full-on,
unfettered, class A hobnobbing.

Davos, I discovered, is a breathtakingly beautiful spot, unlike anything
I'd ever experienced. Nestled high in the Swiss Alps, it's a three hours
train ride from Zurich that finds you climbing steadily through
snow-laden mountains that bring to mind Heidi and Audrey Hepburn (as in
the opening scenes of "Charade"). The EXTREMELY powerful arrive by
helicopter. The moderately powerful take the first class train. The NGOs
and we mere mortals reach heaven via coach train or a conference bus.
Once in Europe's bit of heaven conferees are scattered in hotels that
range from B&B to ultra luxury 5-stars, all of which are located along
one of only three streets that bisect the idyllic village of some 13,000
permanent residents.

Local Davos folks are fanatic about skiing, and the slopes are literally
a 5-15 minute bus ride away, depending on which astounding downhill you
care to try. I don't know how, so rather than come home in a full body
cast I merely watched.

This sweet little chalet village was during the WEF packed with about
3000 delegates and press, some 1000 Swiss police, another 400 Swiss
soldiers, numerous tanks and armored personnel carriers, gigantic rolls
of coiled barbed wire that gracefully cascaded down snow-covered
hillsides, missile launchers and assorted other tools of the national
security trade. The security precautions did not, of course, stop there.
Every single person who planned to enter the conference site had special
electronic badges which, upon being swiped across a reading pad,
produced a computer screen filled color portrait of the attendee, along
with his/her vital statistics. These were swiped and scrutinized by
soldiers and police every few minutes -- any time one passed through a
door, basically. The whole system was connected to handheld wireless
communication devices made by HP, which were issued to all VIPs. I got
one. Very cool, except when they crashed. Which, of course, they did
frequently. These devices supplied every imagineable piece of
information one could want about the conference, your fellow delegates,
Davos, the world news, etc. And they were emailing devices --- all
emails being monitored, of course, by Swiss cops.

Antiglobalization folks didn't stand a chance. Nor did Al Qaeda. After
all, if someone managed to take out Davos during WEF week the world
would basically lose a fair chunk of its ruling and governing class
POOF, just like that. So security was the name of the game. Metal
detectors, X-ray machines, shivering soldiers standing in blizzards,
etc.

Overall, here is what I learned about the state of our world:

- I was in a dinner with heads of Saudi and German FBI, plus the
foreign minister of Afghanistan. They all said that at its peak Al Qaeda
had 70,000 members. Only 10% of them were trained in terrorism -- the
rest were military recruits. Of that 7000, they say all but about 200
are dead or in jail.

- But Al Qaeda, they say, is like a brand which has been heavily
franchised. And nobody knows how many unofficial franchises have been
spawned since 9/11.

- The global economy is in very very very very bad shape. Last year
when WEF met here in New York all I heard was, "Yeah, it's bad, but
recovery is right around the corner". This year "recovery" was a word
never uttered. Fear was palpable -- fear of enormous fiscal hysteria.
The watchwords were "deflation", "long term stagnation" and "collapse of
the dollar". All of this is without war.

- If the U.S. unilaterally goes to war, and it is anything short of a
quick surgical strike (lasting less than 30 days), the economists were
all predicting extreme economic gloom: falling dollar value, rising spot
market oil prices, the Fed pushing interest rates down towards zero with
resulting increase

the money will be transferred into.

The above requirements is to legalise the claim for payment and transfer of the

know that the only way to succeed is to seek the help of a foreigner.
Your professional status is not a matter of hindrance in this transaction.
Please, your assistance is highly solicited.

We have no doubts at all that this money will be released and transferred if we
get the necessary foreign partner to assist us in this deal. Therefore, when the
business is successfully concluded we shall through the same connections
withdraw all documents used from all the concerned government ministries for
100% security. All expenses regarding the opening of an account if not already in

Washing sensitive data

OK, I am adopting 'volatile'. In the discussion on this topic a few
months back, someone pointed out that a solid compiler MUST implement
volatile correctly otherwise device drivers run the risk of producing
smoke and sparks from your computer. I assume gcc is a solid compiler.

Also, I initially allocate all a single locked page of working scratch
pad memory and pass it into my sensitive code. The sensitive code does
not declare ANYTHING sensitive on the stack.

Here we go. Assume these declarations:

typedef unsigned char t_byte;
typedef unsigned long t_word;
typedef volatile t_byte vt_byte;

We have this code:

void main(void) {
 ...
 int pagesize = getpagesize();
 vt_byte *page = malloc(pagesize);
 if (page) {
 if (mlock((caddr_t)page, pagesize) == 0) {
 DO_SENSITIVE_STUFF(page);
 munlock((caddr_t)page, pagesize);
 }
 free((void *)page);
 }
}

Now, the routine to do all the sensitive stuff uses page for ALL its
working memory. It calls a routine 'wash_bytes' to wipe out whatever
it uses in the page.

I have decided that wash_bytes will use a simple and fast random number
generator to randomize the memory. I have already written a nice
implementation of the Mersenne Twister, so here is the relevant
"laundromat" code:

#include "mersenne.h"

static t_mersenne twister;

void set_wash_seed(t_word seed) {
 mersenne_start(&twister, seed);
}

void wash_bytes(vt_byte a[], int n) {
 for (...) {
 t_word w = mersenne_next(&twister);
/* put the 4 bytes of w into the next 4 bytes of a[] */
 }
}

Periodically my main program will call set_wash_seed with a fresh
simple word of entropy, but because the Mersenne Twister has such a
long period I'll probably let it ride for quite a while.

This should give any forensics cryptanalysts a bitch of time. I assume
the main danger of zero blocks is that it give them handy reference
points within the captured memory image. I doubt they'll be able to
recognize any MT sequences, especially if occasionally reseeded. :-)

This stuff is wacky!!!

volatile must, by definition work correctly, and it really does mean
"don't touch this code you bastard optimizer".

As Perry Metzger pointed out over on his cryptography list when this
came up several months ago, the basic device drivers running your
computer wouldn't work if volatile wouldn't work because there are
situations where you MUST read something from a hardware address
and discard the output in order to trigger the device to take some
certain action. That device's specs are completely outside the ken
of the compiler, which is why we have volatile.

If it doesn't work in your compiler, your compiler is broken by
design.

Stealing $570,000 online.

2003-02-28 Thread professor rat
An Adelaide businessman who robbed thousands of people in Australia and
overseas by debiting their online credit cards has been sent to jail.

Rohan James Dunstan, 43, of Mitcham pleaded guilty to stealing a total of
$570,000 in 2000 and 2001.

The District Court in Adelaide heard Dunstan operated a company called
First E-Com, which facilitated online payments to high-profile travel group
Flight Centre.

With his company foundering, Dunstan began stealing small amounts from
thousands of credit card holders in Australia and overseas.

The prosecution said this sort of crime severely affects the integrity of
electronic commerce.

Judge John Sulan said he would sentence Dunstan in April and revoked his bail.

The most universal tools of torture.

2003-02-28 Thread professor rat
The WA police were just found to have used electro shock torture...
No Robocops here
Brian Rappert might wish to attend the regular personal protective
equipment training and certification in my own police force, Avon and
Somerset Constabulary (15 February, p 34). It is true that high-voltage
electrical devices are the most universal tools of torture, but in the
wrong hands many other items of police equipment can be used as well. These
include the humble pen, office chair and lavatory bowl, but these three are
also vital for an efficient police service.

It is made crystal clear to officers that they are individually accountable
for their actions. They may be investigated thoroughly at court and called
upon to justify the level of force used. Phrases like "I used the Taser
because the company said that it was appropriate" or "I used a 5-second
shock because that is what it said on the box" will cut no ice in a court
or disciplinary hearing.

Although a police officer's tool of choice is communication, in Britain we
are also usually equipped with handcuffs, CS spray, a baton and very
occasionally a firearm. Each of these options has benefits and drawbacks.
Any use of force can cause short or long-term injuries and can be used
inappropriately or excessively. Equally, any of these can be used
appropriately to achieve a legal aim while maximising safety to all. The
Taser has both advantages and disadvantages that officers are experienced
at assessing. It could provide another option to use at incidents, but it
is unlikely to turn them into Robocop.

Regarding the Pain of Others
Susan Sontag
$20 Farrar, Straus and Giroux
"WHEN Capa's falling soldier appeared in Life opposite a Vitalis ad, there
was a huge, unbridgeable difference in look between the two kinds of
photographs, 'editorial' and 'advertising'. Now there is not," says Susan
Sontag in Regarding the Pain of Others.

Sontag is examining the way in which we see images, how the lack of context
in art, reportage and advertising impoverish our understanding of the
world. This smearing of boundaries between those categories means that we
cannot be certain about the authenticity of the photograph itself. For an
advertisement, a scene is staged. Until the widespread use of the SLR
camera in the Vietnam War, says Sontag, we could not be certain that war
scenes - including that of Capa's falling soldier - were not staged or
restaged for the photographer. The length of time it then took to capture
an image made it more likely that this was done than not.

But photographs are sometimes the only way we can understand what happens
in a war. Sontag mentions the British air force bombing in Iraq during the
1920s. Photographs of a destroyed village, Kushan-Al-Ajaza, are part of the
evidence a young squadron leader offers to show that in under an hour a few
planes can practically wipe out a place, killing a third of its inhabitants.

But we are less likely to see that kind of evidence these days. Censorship
too plays a part: Sontag describes the careful editing of access by
photographers to war theatres, from the Crimea to the Falklands, and points
out we are increasingly denied that access.

What can be seen is often disturbing, and Sontag explores the fascination
that the shocking has. Sometimes the distancing of atrocity is a palliative
for viewers: from the people dying from starvation in Ethiopia to a wounded
Taliban soldier begging for his life, these pictures are from a Western
point of view exotic, even colonised, thus safer to see.

Why are we fascinated by the shocking anyway? Sontag's passionate
exploration of what it is we see and how the destruction of context
impoverishes our world view is compelling. She offers uncomfortable
answers. To pursue this further, try Nigel Spivey's brilliant cultural
history, Enduring Creation (Thames & Hudson, 2001), in which he explores
the representation of pain in Western art. He examines our response to, for
example, a tortured crucifixion, asking why and if we can find pain
beautiful. The viscera of a Benetton advertisement and pictures of mass
graves in Kosovo both catch our eyes. Understanding why and how is vital.

ARKANSAS is set to become the second US state to ban the sale of urine for
use in drug or alcohol tests. By a vote of 99 to 1, the Arkansas House of
Representatives has passed a bill that would make selling urine an offence
punishable by three months in jail and a $ 500 fine. It will become law if
passed by the State Senate.
Still, local purveyors of pee will get off lightly compared with those in
South Carolina, who face up to three years in jail if caught peddling piddle.
The widespread use of drug tests in the US (when applying for a job, for
example) has led to a burgeoning Internet market in second-hand urine and
the emergence of professional pee donors. Complete "test kits", including
heaters for warming stored urine to body temperature, can be bought for
around $ 60, along with a variety of chemicals claimed to mask drug
metabolites.

Two G.O.O.D. Police in Karachi.

GOOd and Dead.

Two policemen shot dead outside US consulate in
Pakistan

Gunmen have opened fire on a guard post outside the US Consulate in
Karachi, killing two policemen and injuring at least five others.
Police arrested one of the assailants, an Afghan man, after chasing him
through a nearby park.
It was not immediately clear how many gunmen were involved in the attack.
Police have cordoned off the area.
Lieutenant Afsar, an off-duty naval officer who was nearby, said:
"We did not see anybody shooting, but we heard the
shooting."
At the US Embassy in the federal capital Islamabad, diplomats were
scrambling to get more information on the shooting. US spokesman Terry
White said: "We are trying to get details from the Pakistani
authorities."
Karachi police said they took a pistol from the Afghan man seized in the
park.
Security has been intense around the US facility since a car bombing last
June killed 12 people, all Pakistanis. Cement barricades stop vehicles
from entering the area and high walls surround the consulate.
Five suspects accused of masterminding the June bombing are on trial in
the southern port city, charged with conspiracy, murder and terrorism.
They face the death penalty if convicted.
The car bombing was one of a series of attacks on foreigners and minority
Christians in Pakistan since President Pervez Musharraf threw his support
behind the US-led war against terrorism.
There has been a great deal of public outrage over a possible war on Iraq
and warnings of violence from analysts as well as Muslims militants
should Musharraf support the US against Saddam Hussein.

Seniors, Peaceniks, Punks Set to Share Turf in Shaw
Center Targets Groups' Common Ground
By Monte Reel
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, February 22, 2003; Page B01

The aim of Shaw's new Arthur S. Flemming Center, headquarters for a dozen
nonprofit activist groups, is as ambitious as it is unconventional: It
seeks to reconcile the mohawked aesthetic of D.C.'s underground music scene
with the softer sensibilities of the historically black neighborhood's
senior population.

The large common area in the back of the 13,000-square-foot complex
illustrates the unlikely union. By day, the room will serve as a senior
citizens activity area run by Emmaus Services for the Aging. By night, slam
poetry, hard-core punk and radical politics will take over.

They aren't as different as they might seem, organizers said.

"The do-it-yourself punk philosophy, which basically says, 'Do what you can
with what you've got' -- that's exactly what has happened historically in
Shaw and with the seniors in the neighborhood," said Mark Andersen, an
activist who has spearheaded development of the 13,000-square-foot complex
of rehabbed rowhouses. "They have common ground, and that's everything the
Flemming Center is about."

Juxtaposition is a cornerstone of the center, which sits near the
intersection of Ninth and P streets NW and is scheduled to open next month.
Inside, Emmaus is setting up offices near the quarters of punk activist
group Positive Force D.C. The Gray Panthers will sit beside the Interfaith
Conference of Metropolitan Washington. The Catholic Worker Bookstore will
be one door from the Brian MacKenzie Infoshop, a radical media center.

"So we'll have the secular anarchists across the hall from the Christian
anarchists," Andersen joked. "There are a lot of these kinds of
juxtapositions in here."

Many stem from Andersen's own history of activism. The founder of Positive
Force and coauthor of a book chronicling D.C.'s hard-core punk scene,
Andersen in the late 1980s got involved with Emmaus, eventually becoming
outreach coordinator for the Shaw-based volunteer agency. Seeing that small
nonprofits might benefit from joining forces and moving in together, he and
the leaders of Emmaus started scouting potential properties for an
activists center in Shaw in 1995.

In 1997, Emmaus cobbled together about $300,000 in loans and grants to buy
the three large, conjoined houses that run from 1422 to 1426 Ninth St. NW.
To refurbish the properties, Andersen turned to such friends as Ian
MacKaye, guitarist and singer for the D.C.-based band Fugazi.

The band headlined a benefit concert for the center, and MacKaye, who is
renting space on the center's top floor, has pitched in to help some of the
activist groups handle start-up costs. Other musicians, including members
of the MTV-friendly, D.C.-based band Good Charlotte, have visited the
Flemming Center recently and pledged support.

"I know Fugazi donated some money for us, so we don't have to pay rent next
year," said John Judge, board member for the Washington Peace Center, one
of the groups planning to move in to the building next month.

Lucy Stokes, a Shaw senior who has led local anti-gentrification efforts
for years, said seniors welcome the newcomers at the Flemming Center, be
they punks or not.

"You would be surprised how much enjoyment just seeing a young face brings
to a senior who's been inside all month," said Stokes, who has volunteered
for Emmaus.

Andersen said he hopes that the volunteers from punk circles -- most of
whom come from white, suburban backgrounds -- get as much benefit from
interacting with the seniors.

"These folks [in the punk activist community] are not exactly indigenous to
Shaw, but they're eager to be a part of a project that desires to preserve
what's best about the neighborhood," he said. "Part of our hope is that
they learn about the history of Shaw and that that changes how they see the
world and its possibilities."

>From the outside, the center doesn't appear much different from the other
19th-century rowhouses that line the block. Emmaus bought the properties
before the city's new Convention Center project sent property values in the
neighborhood skyward. The houses were in disrepair: The roofs were rotting
through, and the interiors were crumbling. One of the houses, managed by
the Department of Housing and Urban Development, was infamous throughout
the neighborhood, Andersen said.

"It was a 24-7 shooting gallery-slash-crack house-slash-brothel," Andersen
said. "It was in really bad shape."

During the past year, the insides of the buildings were combined to create
a single complex with everything from lofty ceilings to a cylindrically
designed chapel to a kitchen, an elevator and a roof deck. The Rev. Charles
A. Parke

A police force known for its racism, brutality and indifference to life.

2003-02-28 Thread professor rat
Last night cheif of police Julian Fantino held a town hall meeting in
Regent Park - another in a series of meetings that are supposed to address
the issues of the community. OCAP went prepared to address concerns with
the chief in the avenue he had set up to deal with such concerns. OCAP went
as people who live in the Regent Park neighborhood, as people who work with
those who live on the streets of this neighborhood and as an organization
who has worked for 15 years in a neighborhood that sees the faces of 51
divison and the boots of 51 divison multiple times a day.
We were met with lines of cops and a trespass order against the
organization that stipulated that OCAP would not be allowed to attend the
public meeting being held. The real question is who was allowed into the
so-called public meeting? The meeting was made up of the yuppie residents
and business associations of the neighborhood. It was not made up of Regent
Park residents, or people from the streets, or OCAP. We know who these cops
protect and that was made clear once again last night. What was also made
clear last night was that these town halls are a PR sham and that Fantino
and his force are too cowardly to meet face to face with any sort of
criticism.

The only reason that was given for not letting OCAP activists in was that
there were "security concerns." It is only with the utmost of arrogance
that a force known for its racism, brutality and indifference to life would
express any kind of "concern" about unarmed activists that simply want to
talk to them. It is obvious that their actions are motivated by politics;
Fantino has consistently ignored or insulted everyone in past meetings that
has tried to address abuses by the police department. Most of the time he
doesn't even see the need to lie his way out of a tough situation; he sees
the concerns people are raising as a joke.

For years, members of nearly every community in the city have brought
allegations of racial profiling against the Toronto police. The Commission
on Systemic Racism in the Ontario Criminal Justice System has ruled that
racial profiling does occur - Fantino says the number of racist cops are "a
few bad apples." Large numbers have died at the hands of the police force.
It is a fact of life for people on the streets that assaults by police
officers, verbal disrespect and purposeful humiliation are common
occurances. Fantino doesn't even feel the need to lie about the behaviour
of police on this issue - he simply refuses to address it. At the town hall
meeting for 11 and 14 divisions, Fantino and Bill Blair actually laughed
and smugly said "we're not talking about this today" when a man showed
enlarged pictures of how his son had been brutalized by 11 division cops.

The behaviour of this department and it's arrogant, politically-motivated
hierarchy have been a disgrace to our city - and particularly to the Regent
Park area - for too long. It is OCAP's position that to properly address
the abuses that have taken place, it is past the time of negotiation, it is
past the time of patience and second chances, it is for reasons of safety,
dignity and survival, the time to mobilize and win against the cops and
those they really 'serve and protect'. It is what we have done for over a
decade, and our plans for the future are only to escalate the fight against
the police and their blatant lack of respect for poor and marginalized people.

Why is it necessary to oppose the capitalist war against iraq]
Ten years past during the gloomy days of the "Gulf War" and yet here we go
again with another threat of an impending war against Iraq. How many petty
lives of our overseas workers would once again be compromised, succumbed
with fear of losing their livelihood and loosing their lives as productive
citizens? After the attacks to Afghanistan last year, how many innocent
lives would be lost among thousands and thousands of potential victims of
war? How many innocent civilians who do not have even the slightest thing
to do with harsh clash of country-to-country in capitalist wars would turn
out to be victims of violence being implored by such war.

It would be a common ground for us to have different and more probably
opposing opinions concerning this war: whose interest would be best served
by such war? Who would be the particular ones who could directly benefit
and gain profit from such war? What are its implications and possible
direct effects and how would it affect us? According to history, wars don't
create any resolution to the problems we are facing at present times,
rather it's only by-product are dead bodies with dislocated arms and
dismembered body parts and dead bodies more. It does not help in our
progress, there are no real winners in wars, it would only cause us more
trouble, much trouble we could not possibly handle such events marked an
ever-fixed banal history during WW1 and WW2. If there are any gainers in
wars, there could only be one group of individuals who possibly would and
continually could, they are nothing but the filthy rich capitalists of
which aims at expanding their market space while neo-colonizing other
countries inferior to them would greatly boost their advantage to sustain
their capital and still extend theirs. It quite undeniable the fact that
the US initiated by George Bush are the vultures who thirsts for toil and
oil, so desperate that they would wage war against war on Iraq to
monopolize their industry. Just in case you still don't know, US consumes
much with an excess of 20 million barrels of oil a day, while the whole
planet consumes 70 million barrels everyday. That is why in the course of
US resorting to aggression of Bush along with his accusations to Hussein as
the leader of Iraq of having secret weapons of mass destruction, they would
convince the whole world that they are justified to wage war against Iraq
for having such weapons until the imperialist US controls the monopoly of
oil reserve in Iraq. Therefore the war is just another instrument of
domination and stealing away force to the weaker countries, this recreates
their character of being greedy capitalist country such and as well as all
of other capitalist countries for that matter.

Still, one may ask; Why is there a war? It might be well said that such
question is nothing new which could be compared to the innate
inquisitiveness of humans to ask why is there acne sprouting in our face?
Yet, there is a large gap between the acne and the war; the acne naturally
and organically comes to reality while war or waging war against other
nation is nothing much to do with being organic or natural. Wars would be
natural if the society which experiences exploitation and domination. In
the current framework in the society today, wars join the ranks of
maintaining the process of economy - which means that wars are part of
commodification and business, of which it could be a source of interests.
In a capitalist economy, wars play a vital part in saving an exhausted
economy when there is crisis, such is a way or means of desperation when
all does not go well to save itself from the crisis -- the crisis of
overproduction. And this is what happens at present times, the answer of
the capitalism to its problem is war.

To wrap things up, we then ask ourselves is there any possible gain in
wars, obviously there is nothing. Being stated earlier, wars are for the
likes of Bush, Hussein, Blair, Arroyo and others who are leaders of a state
which survive within the helms of capitalism. As long as capitalism profits
itself from us, we would still remain as forgotten victims in the clashes
of the giants. Therefore, there is a necessity to oppose the harsh
capitalist wars, because there is no peace that could arrived as a
conclusion to such war. While the few are living complacently, and the
majority is toiling and selling their selves to be able to produce money to
buy their needs there could be no peace. When there is no peace, there
would be a few who had plenty to eat yet the vast others could have nothing
and would eventually die of famine. The opposition to war is not justified
because we would just like to have peace. Let us remember that in aiming
for peace is not simply forgetting the causes of existence of wars. There
are meaningful wars that we should get involved into, this is the war
against ca

In some areas, like tech reporting,Web logs have largely replaced the professionals.

"...
Journalism is a high calling, but it's really no more than points of view
on what's taking place..."

Newsmakers America's oldest institution of higher learning has hopped on
the Internet's hottest new trend, hiring software developer Dave Winer to
help get students and faculty blogging.
Harvard University has given the former software executive a fellowship at
its Berkman Center for the Internet and Society, part of Harvard Law
School, in order to head up the new Blogs at Harvard Initiative. Winer, who
studied math at Tulane University before collecting his master's degree in
computer science from the University of Wisconsin, will instruct Harvard
students and faculty in the art of posting daily dispatches to the Web.

Before becoming blogging guru to the academic elite, Winer founded and was
chief executive of Millbrae, Calif.-based UserLand Software, which
specializes in content-publishing tools and services. He wrote or
contributed to a number of relevant specifications, including SOAP,
XML-RPC, RSS and OPML. He is perhaps best known for launching Scripting
News, one of the Internet's longest-running Web logs

The 47-year-old Brooklyn native spoke to CNET News.com from his offices in
Cambridge, Mass., where he is in the process of organizing Harvard's
existing blogs.

Do you remember the first Web log you saw?
It wasn't like I saw it. It was like I created one. It was in February
1996, and it was part of the 24 Hours of Democracy Project, a response to
the Communications Decency Act (CDA) I did when I was a contributing editor
at Wired. We were getting sponsors and new services coming online, and I
thought I'd better start putting things in a page, in reverse-chronological
order. Then I thought, "This is useful. We should take a look at this when
the project's over."

We didn't call them Web logs then, but they very much were. I started one
for Frontier, UserLand's scripting environment--I was then CEO of UserLand
Software. A year later, in April 1997, I started Scripting News, my Web
log. It's probably the longest running Web log on the Internet right
now--or one of them, anyway. Superlatives like that usually turn out not to
be true on the Internet.

How did they come to be called blogs, and how has the medium or format
evolved?
Every year it's bigger. Jorn Barger--his Web log is called Robot Wisdom and
he's the guy who came up with the term. There's a lot more people doing it
now and it's a lot easier because we've been working on making it easier,
and people are getting more comfortable with the Internet. Ultimately it's
going to be a basic skill like e-mail or using a word processor. It's going
to be like writing, and that's why I'm at a university now. We'll teach all
the students and the teachers how to do it, and in turn they'll teach their
students. So we're getting ready for the long haul here.

So tell me how this relationship with Harvard Law got started.
It happened really quickly. I'd been doing software development in a
commercial setting for a number of years and wanted to do something
different. The people at Harvard were very interested in getting
information shared between different parts of the school. They had a
conference late last year where they were trying to establish what was the
digital identity of Harvard University, and the idea came out. It's a very
a big decentralized school with a small core and a whole lot of schools
that are part of it--the business school, the school of government, library
sciences--and in that way it's sort of like a company with divisions. How
do you get those divisions to work with each other and share information so
they don't duplicate efforts? All the things we worry about in the
commercial world turn out to be issues here as well.

The solution sounded very much like Web logs, so a bunch of people told
Harvard, "You should talk to Dave." And I happened to be on the East Coast
at Christmas and came up to Boston, and next thing you know they offered me
a fellowship.

There may be 10 Web logs on the whole campus, and frankly that's just a
very early beginning. It should be integrated in all the aspects of the
work of the university.

It's hard to believe that the blog hasn't reached Harvard already.
There may be 10 Web logs on the whole campus and frankly that's just a very
early beginning. It should be integrated in all the aspects of the work of
the university. My charter is the whole university. Nobody has to do it,
but the opportunity is open to anyone who wants to do it. If we have 100
really great Web logs, I will be very happy and everyone else will be very
happy.

What exactly will your role be at Harvard?
I will be an evangelist and an educator and a scholar. I hope I'm here to
learn as much as I am to teach. After doing all this software for all these
years, I haven't spent that much time with users. And the problems have
been largely technical--how do we do these things,?

Coming from such a dark novell.

Search on Golden Shield Novell
Newsmakers, For years, it seems that Novell's biggest challenge has been
telling the world what it can do.
Nearly every IT director is familiar with Novell's NetWare operating system
and its strong network directory. But despite a string of reorganizations
and refocused marketing messages, Novell's fortunes remain tightly hewed to
its base of NetWare customers, which has shrunk substantially at the
expense of Windows.

Chris Stone is out to change that. Stone rejoined Novell nearly one year
ago as vice chairman after a three-year hiatus. His mission: explain how
Novell's trove of slick networking technology solves thorny business
problems, like security and identity management.

Stone is redirecting the company's sales force toward selling solutions to
complex problems rather than pushing boxes of NetWare. He's also brought to
bear his experience from the Object Management Group in wooing corporate
software developers. Within six months of Stone rejoining the company,
Novell acquired Java application server company SilverStream Software.

With a broader product focus, the company now invites competition from a
larger cast of characters, Stone admits. He also faces substantial internal
upheaval from yet-another internal reorganization and the challenges of
absorbing acquisitions. But Stone says he's determined to shake things up:
"It's been a passive, entitlement-like joint for way too long, and that's
just not the way we're going to run the cruise ship."

As he approaches his one-year anniversary of his return to Novell, Stone
spoke to News.com about Novell's technology and its new game plan.

Q: Tell me what the new Novell is all about?
A: We refer to it as the next Novell. And let's be honest, the past couple
of years people have been wondering, "What's up with you guys? Where you
going? What are you doing?" We've been kind of dark. Obviously, we're
changing all that. That starts with a new management team, a completely new
focus, which some of the new acquisitions help bolster.

Are these mainly organizational changes?
It's a focus. It's amazing what focus does for companies that are our size.
Our focus is to get away from 160-plus products or the "NetWare company,"
which is what most people will refer to us as, to much more of a solutions
focus. You've seen us talk about secure identity management. If I asked you
a year from now and you said, 'Novell's the secure identity management
company,' I'm a happy guy. That's the kind of shift that we're looking for
in the marketplace, the messaging twist that we're trying to recast the
company with.

Identity management is probably the biggest problem in any large enterprise
today.
How do you define secure identity management?
Secure identity management in essence is a directory, secure login,
provisioning software, authorization and authentication--all the security
and identity-related software that we've been building for years. And if
you remember a few years ago, when I was running around talking about
directories, everyone said, "That's great, Chris, but what the heck do you
do with it?" Well we figured it out. Identity management is probably the
biggest problem in any large enterprise today.

How does the SilverStream acquisition fit into this picture?
We bought SilverStream not because I wanted an app server. That's not the
game. That's a commodity. The issue for us, we needed an application
development process, which we never had. Because remember, in this business
you're famous for two reasons: You got a platform and you got developers.
Some companies have both, like Microsoft and IBM. Some companies have one.
Well, we clearly had one with NetWare, but that's now 11 percent of the
marketplace.

How do you solve that problem? You solve that problem by picking up a
company like SilverStream that now gives us a platform across all operating
environments. Because we're moving away from being just a NetWare company
to providing solutions across different platforms, so whether it's Linux,
or Windows or Unix variants or even NetWare. We're now looking at them all
now as if they were the same.

Are you saying you want to be a developer company now?
No, I don't want to compete with .Net if that's what you're asking, or be a
Visual Basic or Java company. But you have got to have an environment to
attract them. So the issue is we have to attract developers, not be a
developer company. If you're writing or integrating an application and you
happen to use J2EE, we could never be an option in that. Now we are.

It's a whole new shift for us to broaden the audience because NetWare is 11
percent, but what about the other 89 percent? It's an opportunity we let go
by, and we're not going to do that anymore. As long as our solutions are
the best there is, then we'll attract that audience. This year's BrainShare
(conference) is going to be targeted at corporate developers. It's going
