ASSISTANCE REQUIRED

2003-03-29 Thread Dr Ade Kola

ASSISTANCE REQUIRED FOR ACQUISITION OF ESTATES.

Dear friend,

I write to inform you of my desire to acquire estates or landed properties in your
country on behalf of the Director of Cotracts and Finance Allocation of the Federal
Ministry of works and Housing in Nigeria.Considering his very strategic and
influential position, he would want the transaction to be strictly as confidential as
possible. He further want his identity to remain undisclosed at least for now, until
the completion of the transaction. Hence our desire to have an oversea agent.

I have therefore been directed to inquire if you would agree to act as our oversea
agent in order to actualise this transaction. The deal in breif is that the funds with
which to carry out our proposed investments in your country is presently in a coded
account in the Nigerian apex bank and we need your assistance to transfer the funds to
your country or any safe account outside your country in a convenient bank account
that will be provided by you before we can put the funds into use. For this you shall
be considered to have executed a contract for the ministry. The contract sum of which
shall run into US$15.5Million of which your share shall be 30% if you agree to be our
overseas agent. Your arae of specialisation does not matter in this transaction, all
that is required of you is a safe account and your willingness to assist us acquire
estates in your country.

As soon as payment is effected and the amount mentioned above is successfully
transferred into your account, we intend to use our own share in acquiring some
estates abroad. For this too, you shall serve as our agent . It might interest you to
note that last year, a similar transaction was carried out with one MR. CHIENCHEN YU
of Taiwan but after securing the payment approvals, and payment effected,
MR.CHIENCHEN YU changed his numbers and addresses, and was no where to be found on our
getting to Taiwan. That was how we lost US$7.5Million. So this time around , I will be
with you before the remmittance is made into your provided account to avoid future
occurrence and allow trust to play a very minimal role until performance is seen.

You are requested to communicate your acceptance or otherwise of this proposal, If
however, you are not disposed to assist, kindly delete/detroy this letter in view of
the confidentiality of the proposede transaction and interest of personalities
involved.
Thank you in anticipation of your co-operation.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Ade Kola.

CONFIDENTIAL BUSINESS PROPOSAL

2003-03-29 Thread SODINDO MALINGA
0031613777023
HAARLEM,
THE NETHERLANDS.

CONFIDENTIAL BUSINESS PROPOSAL.

You may be surprised to receive this letter from me
since you do not know me personally. I am Sodindo Malinga, the first son of Tawanda
Malinga, the most popular black farmer in Zimbabwe who was murdered in the land dispute
in my country. I got your contact
through network online hence decided to write you.
Before the death of my father, he had taken me to
Johannesburg to deposit the sum of US8.6 million
(Eight million, Six Hundred thousand United States
dollars), in one of the private security company,
as he foresaw the looming danger in Zimbabwe this money was deposited in a box as gem
stones to avoid much demurrage from security company. This amount was meant for the
purchase of new machines and chemicals for the Farms and establishment of new farms in
Swaziland.
This land problem came when Zimbabwean President Mr.
Robert Mugabe introduced a new Land Act Reform
wholly affecting the rich white farmers and some
few black farmers, and this resulted to the killing and mob action by Zimbabwean war
veterans and some lunatics in the society. In fact a lot of people were killed because
of this Land reform Act for which my father was one of the victims.

It is against this background that, I and my family
fled Zimbabwe for fear of our lives and are
currently staying in the Netherlands where we are
seeking political asylum and moreso have decided to
transfer my father’s money to a more reliable
foreign account. since the law of Netherlands
prohibits a refugee (asylum seeker) to open any
bank account or to be involved in any financial
transaction throughout the territorial zone of Netherlands, As the eldest son of my
father, I am saddled with the responsibility of seeking a genuine foreign account
where this money could be transferred without the knowledge of my government who are
bent on taking everything we have got. The South African government seems to be
playing along with them.

I am faced with the dilemma of moving this amount of
money out of South Africa for fear of going through
the same experience in future, both countries have
similar political history. As a businessman,I am
seeking for a partner who I have to entrust my
future and that of my family in his hands, I must let you know that this transaction
is risk free. If you accept to assist me and my family, all I want you to do for me,
is to make an arrangements with the security company to clear the consignment(funds)
from their afiliate office here in the Netherlands as i have already given directives
for the consignment to be brought to the Netherlands from South Africa. But before then
all modalities will have to be put in place like change of ownership to the consignment
and more importantly this money I intend to use for
 investmentment.

I have two options for you. Firstly you can choose
to have certain percentage of the money for nominating your account for this
transaction. Or you can go into partnership with me for the proper profitable
investment of the money in your country. Whichever the option you want, feel free to
notify me. I have also mapped out 5% of this money for all kinds of expenses incurred
in the process of this transaction.
If you do not prefer a partnership I am willing to
give you 20% of the money while the remaining 75%
will be for my investment in your country. Contact me
with the above telephone number or my E-mail address
while I implore you to maintain the absolute
 secrecy required in this transaction.

Thanks, GOD BLESS YOU

Yours Faithfully,
Sodindo Malinga.

spongy areas called the corpa cavernosa. An erection happens when you become
excited, and the natural flow of blood fills these erectile tissues. Pinacle
has been scientifically developed to expand these erectile tissues and
make them much larger. As it does this the erectile tissues can hold more
blood than ever before.
The result? A MUCH larger penis in thickness
and length, and a rock solid erection.
And all you have to do to experience these massive
results is take Pinacle pills. That's it.
There is -

by many as a real'miracle'.
If you are ready to experience this amazing miracle
for yourself, [you can make it happen with Pinacle, GUARANTEED].

Do YOU Want To Be Better Than 'Average'?

According to medical records, the average
penis length is 6 inches. This is not based on where you are from, your
race or nationality. This is true all over the world.
So if 6 inches is all you want to be or for some
reason you want to be even smaller than this, please don't read any further.
But IF you want to be a lot better than average
- UP TO 3 FULL INCHES BETTER - we can help. Remember, Pinacle is completely
safe and completely private. It can be your secret - no'one ever needs
to know you are taking it. And for the HUGE results you will experience,
Pinacle is incredibly inexpensive. You really can't afford NOT to take
it if you care about your sex life today!

"How LONG Will It Take To Get The Results I Need?"

Here is a realistic timetable for what you
will achieve:

Week One Through Week Four
During this period the most noticeable change
will be the expansion in width of your penis. You will also experience
and enjoy longer lasting erections.
Week Four Through Week Eight
Now you will start to see a remarkable lengthening
of your penis. Even when you're not excited and don't have an erection,
your penis will rest and hang longer and thicker than ever before. When
you look in the mirror you will be amazed!
Week Nine And Beyond
Now when you get an erection your penis will
look and feel firmer, stronger and more rock solid then you ever thought
possible.

A SUICIDE bomber killed five Americans in an attack in north of the city of

Captain Andrew Wallace said the victims were part of the 1st Brigade, 3rd
Infantry Division.
The attack occurred at a US-manned checkpoint on Highway 9, north of Najaf.
A taxi stopped close to the checkpoint and the driver waved for help. Five
soldiers approached the car and it exploded, Wallace told Associated Press
Television News today.
It was not immediately clear precisely when the incident occurred.
US Central Command said it was aware of the report.
The suicide bombing was the first against US and British forces since the
invasion of Iraq began.
There have been warnings of suicide attacks in Iraq.
Iraqi dissidents and Arab media have claimed that Saddam Hussein has opened
a training camp for Arab volunteers willing to carry out suicide bombings
against US forces in Iraq.
Terror mastermind Osama bin Laden also urged Iraqis last month in an audio
tape aired on Arabic television to employ the tactic against the Americans.
Other Arab militants also spoke about suicide missions against the invading
armies.
Such suicide attacks are common by Palestinian militants in targeting the
better equipped Israeli army during the uprising on the West Bank and Gaza
Strip.

vermin sounding just a bit too much like Germans.
And unfortunately for Basil, there is a group of German tourists arriving
later that day.Basil tries to refrain everyone from mentioning the
war in front of the Germans. But after he gets a concussion, he
ends up angering the tourists when he goofs up their dinner order by
mixing up Eva Braun with an order of prawns, Hermann Goring

over his lip.Whatever you do, don't mention the war, My

What now will save us from a psychopathic tyrant who sponsors
international
terrorism and who is also armed with weapons of mass destruction?
The war seeks to force international acceptance of pre-emptive
strikes
and regime change. The US says that it is now legitimate for
one country
to launch a war because it believes another country has hostile
intentions
towards it. The US also says that it is legitimate for one country to

intervene in the internal affairs of another country and replace a

centuries over the peoples of the third world.

2003-03-29 Thread Philip Ipenza
Dear Sir/ Madam
I am Mr. Philip Ipenza, Provincial Manager Standard Bank of South Africa, Capetown,
Branch. I have urgent and very confidential business proposition for you.
On June 6, 1999, a foreign mining consultant/contractor with the South Africa Mining
Corporation, Mr. Richard Moss made a numbered time (Fixed) Deposit for twelve calendar
months, valued at US$25,000,000.00 (Twenty- five Million Dollars) in my branch. Upon
maturity, I sent a routine notification to his forwarding address but got no reply.
After a month, we sent a reminder and finally we discovered from his contract
employers, the South Africa Mining Corporation that Mr. Richard Moss died from an
automobile accident. On further investigation, I found out that he died without making
a WILL, and all attempts to trace his next of kin was fruitless.
I therefore made further investigation and discovered that Mr. Richard Moss did not
declare any kin or relations in all his official documents, including his Bank Deposit
paperwork in my Bank. This sum of US$25,000,000.00 is still sitting in my Bank and the
interest is being rolled over with the principal sum at the end of each year. No one
will ever come forward to claim it. According to South African Law, at the expiration
of 5 (five) years, the money will revert to the ownership of the South Africa
Government if nobody applies to claim the fund.
Consequently, my proposal is that I will like you as a foreigner to stand in as the
next of kin to Mr. Richard Moss so that the fruits of this old man's labour will not
get into the hands of some corrupt government officials. This is simple, I will like
you to provide immediately your full names and address so that the Attorney will
prepare the necessary documents and affidavits which will put you in place as the next
of kin. We shall employ the service of two Attorneys for processing and notarization
of the WILL and to obtain the necessary documents and letter of probate/administration
in your favour for the transfer. A bank account in any part of the world which you
will provide will then facilitate the transfer of this money to you as the
beneficiary/next of kin. The money will be paid into your account for us to share in
the ratio of 60% for me and 40% for you.
There is no risk at all as all the paperwork for this transaction will be done by the
Attorney and my position as the Branch Manager guarantees the successful execution of
this transaction. If you are interested, please reply immediately via the private
email address below. Upon your response, I shall then provide you with more details
and relevant documents that will help you understand the transaction.
Please observe utmost confidentiality, and rest assured that this transaction would be
most profitable for both of us because I shall require your assistance to invest my
share in your country.
Awaiting your urgent reply via my email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks and regards.

A Million 9-11's...Whatever it takes.

Columbia Proffr Calls for Deaths of American Troops

An academic furor was brewing Friday over a Columbia University professor
who told thousands of students and faculty that he would like to see the
United States defeated in Iraq and suffer a million Mogadishus --
referring to the 1993 ambush in Somalia that killed 18 Americans.
The professor, Nicholas De Genova, told a teach-in on Wednesday that the
only true heroes are those who find ways that help defeat the U.S.
military. De Genova also asserted Americans who call themselves patriots
are white supremacists.

De Genova's hopes for the defeat of the United States were cheered by the
crowd of 3,000, according to newspaper reports. But his mention of the
Somali ambush -- I personally would like to see a million Mogadishus --
was largely met with silence.

A call Friday to De Genova, 35, was answered with a recording that said his
voice mailbox was full.

Columbia University on Friday issued a statement that distanced the school
from his comments but did not condemn them.

Assistant Professor Nicholas De Genova was speaking as an individual at a
teach-in. He was exercising his right to free speech. His statement does
not in any way represent the views of Columbia University.

History professor Eric Foner, who helped organize the teach-in and spoke
after De Genova, said Friday: I disagreed strongly and I said so. If I had
known what he was going to say I would have been reluctant to have him speak.

Foner said De Genova was a last-minute invitee, was just one of about 25
speakers and did not represent the general tone of the event, which was
highly educational.

I thought that was completely uncalled for, Foner was quoted as saying,
referring to De Genova's allusion to the Mogadishu ambush and firefight,
known for the graphic image of a slain American soldier being dragged
through the streets. We do not desire the deaths of American soldiers.

De Genova's particular expertise on the subject of the war in Iraq is not
clear. His dissertation, entitled Working the Boundaries, Making the
Difference: Race and Space in Mexican Chicago, explores socio-cultural
processes implicated in the mutually constitutive productions of
racialized difference and urban space in the experiences of Mexican migrant
factory workers in Chicago, according to a Stanford University Web site.

De Genova's research posits a Mexican Chicago as a standpoint of critique
from which to interrogate the U.S. nation-state, political economy,
racialized citizenship, and immigration law, said the site.

thousands have volunteered to serve as martyrdom-seekers (suicide
attackers) in the battle with the American enemy,'' he said. ''We trained

desert fighting.''
The biggest suicide bombing against the U.S. military abroad was in Lebanon
when a truck packed with explosives drove into the U.S. Marine base at
Beirut International Airport and exploded in the early morning Oct. 23,
1983, as the troops slept. The attack killed 241 American servicemen and
leveled the base. Simultaneously, a Beirut base for French soldiers was
attacked by another suicide bomber, killing 58 paratroopers.
The Americans and the French were in Lebanon as part of an ill-fated
peacekeeping mission to end Lebanon's civil war. Iranian-backed Shiite
Muslim militants were blamed for the attacks.
In 1996, a truck bomb at the U.S. Khobar Towers barracks in Saudi Arabia
killed 19 U.S. servicemen.

Dr. Billy Turner of McNeese State University says, 9-1-1 as its
come to be known in the common vinacular now, it at least gave us a wake
up call that we're not immune. Terrorist events have happened in all of
the other advanced industrialized societies as well as the third world.
They go on almost daily. Turner says America may actually be at
greater risk. In fact, the more open a society is the more
vulnerable it is to terrorist attacks and we're an extremely open
society.
So open, that we may not know exactly where an attack might be coming
from. Doctor Turner says although most people are focusing on Iraqi's or
Al-Quida, there are many groups that oppose american foreign policy and
they may view now as the perfect time to strike.
Without sounding like an alarmist, terrorists understandably, from
their standpoint, not ours, try to get the biggest bang for a buck, so to
speak. Targets that come to mind initially here, we think of our
petrochemical complex because they're so significant and so visible.
L-n-g ships when they're birthed out there are carrying an enormous
amount of energy.
Although security levels have been raised in these high target areas,
Doctor Turner says he hopes people don't get lulled into a false sense of
security. Sometimes he says, terrorists strike where you least expect.
Terrorist events do not neccesarily have to destroy massive
equipment or take massive numbers of human lives to achieve an affect.
The psychological or emotional affect can be even more
devastating.
Dr. Turner says if we are in fact faced with a terrorist attack on
American soil the worse thing you can do is panic. He says the best
advice is to avoid rumours, and use common sense and prudent judgement
before acting upon anything.

Unofficial reports are that 500 iraqi's died 2 days ago and
day before yesterday another 1000 died.

Al Jazeera, like CNN and Fox News, reports that civilians are
pretty much ignoring the bombing and shelling -- they wish to
enter Bara as usual despite the fact it is declared a military
target -- they stroll onto battlefields to collect the
artillery casing boxes.

This indicates that the US, as claimed is, taking extraordinary
measures to avoid civilian casualties, and is having
considerable success in avoiding civilian casualties.

I would cut Bush to pieces with my teeth
March 30 2003
The Sun-Herald
Rasoul Hammed Najeed stood outside his home sobbing uncontrollably for his
five-year-old son, who was killed while playing near a busy Baghdad
vegetable market when an air raid struck.

After this crime, I wish I could see [US President George Bush] in order
to cut him to pieces with my teeth, he cried.

Another man, identified as Saad Abd Qasim, stood as if in a trance, unable
to speak.

Friends said his wife, his child and the wife of his son had been among the
50 to 60 people Iraqis say were killed in the raid.

We heard a plane flying over us. We saw a rocket coming in our direction,
and then we heard the explosion. My shop was shaken but, thank God, I am
safe, Eyad Abadi, 30, said.
The raid took place in the run-down, working-class district of Shula in
north-west Baghdad, inhabited mostly by Shi'ite Muslims.

Most of the one-storey shops in the immediate area were demolished. The
ground was covered with blood and broken glass. Reporter Hassan Hafidh said
he saw 10 corpses.

Abu Dhabi television said US cruise missiles may have hit the market.

The US military blamed another, earlier explosion in a Baghdad residential
area last week on an errant Iraqi missile. It had no immediate comment on
Friday's hit on Shula.

There were scenes of panic and confusion at the nearby Al-Noor Hospital as
relatives tried to locate or comfort injured loved ones.

Is this the humanity that Bush is talking about? He has no mercy at all.
May God make him fail, said Ali Kadhin, whose three-year-old son was badly
injured in the attack.

Dr Osama Sakhari said he had counted 55 people killed and more than 47
wounded in the raid. Iraqi Information Minister Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf
said at least 58 people had been killed.

Dr Sakhari said he had counted 15 children among the dead - one had died in
his arms.

I ask Bush and Blair to imagine how they would feel if their child died in
their arms, he said.

I believe we hit the Al Jazeera office in Afghanistan pretty early in our

looking for the al-jazeera in english website.) This is a bit of a

hostile media offices (and the embassies of countries that p*ss us off) do
seem to come to a bad end when they're in bombing zones.

1500 turkish troops moved into north iraq-US cannot
immediately do any thing about it since flying over
Turkish air space is important for them.
The tragedy for the Kurds is that they're just not important enough to get

Gruesome toll grows as army grinds to a halt

The Sun-Herald
Lucky... Saja Jaafar, 3, lies in a Baghdad hospital after surviving the
bombing of the al-Naser market in the Shuwaila district. Photo: AFP

Silver stars and red tracer fire lit the sky as the Al Shualla people
washed their dead - as many as 58 of them were slaughtered when a bomb
exploded in their little marketplace.

Some carried blanket-draped coffins through darkened alleyways, others
strapped them to the roofs of battered cars.

But from all houses the same teary cries drifted into the chilly night:
There is no god but God.

As each family group left the
mosque, the men faced Mecca in prayer and the lights of passing cars etched
the outline of their women, standing in tight knots off to the side.

Iraqi officials insist this bomb, the second in 48 hours to hit a civilian
market, was dropped by a US or British jet. The Americans are
investigating; they say they don't know.

But the suffering and the grief radiating from a small crater in this
impoverished Shi'ite neighbourhood in Baghdad will make it harder for
ordinary Iraqis to see the US-led invasion force as an army of liberation,
rather than one of conquest.

At the Al-Noor Hospital, 500metres from the marketplace in north-west
Baghdad, tearful men held each other in their arms as distraught women
yelled the names of the dead.

A man, sobbing with grief, called over and over: That man! That man!
Relatives said he was referring to President George Bush, who, in
Washington, appeared to be warning of more setbacks before victory in
saying: We are now fighting the most desperate units of the dictator's
army. The fierce fighting under way will demand further courage and further
sacrifice, yet we know the outcome of this battle.

In the face of stiff resistance and severe front-line problems - security
and logistic - US commanders have now decided on a pause of up to six days
in their advance on Baghdad.

The Al Shualla carnage came on a day in which the US seemed to put aside
its undertaking not to damage Iraq's infrastructure: waves of strikes,
including the first confirmed use of 4700-pound (2100 kilogram)
bunker-buster bombs, destroyed much of Baghdad's telephone system.

In Al Shualla, at 6.30pm, people were busy in the market. Ghannun Hussein
was waiting for his 59-year-old father with the vegetables for their
evening meal when he heard the whoosh of a missile.

Standing by his father's hospital bed later, he said: I heard the
explosion. I ran. All the people were on the ground; people's arms and legs
were cut off, there was too much blood.

Najin Abdula, who works at the hospital, raced to the scene: There was the
body of a man with no head. I stopped cars in the traffic to get them to
bring the injured to the hospital.

Then he opened the door of a morgue refrigerator for The Sun-Herald. Inside
were five bodies. One young man had half his head blown away; the nose of
another was gone and his flesh and clothing were torn.

As family members and hospital staff, many in tears, worked feverishly,
survivors who could talk spoke of their split-second encounter with war.

Khalid Jabar Hussein, 49, with shrapnel in his arm, wrist and leg, said:
First I heard an aircraft and then the missile coming at us and I don't
know anything after that. I fell down.

Sajaja Jaafur, one of five in her family who were injured, lay in her bed,
crying with pain as she tried to turn to face her mother. Her lovely olive
skin was torn, there was a tube in her nose and a blood-stained dressing
around her abdomen.

Samaan Kadhim, 52, sedated with a bad gash on his back, said: This was a
civilian area, there were no soldiers. It was just a market.

In the midst of all this, Dr Ahmed Sufian lashed out: Our floors are
covered with blood of our people, the walls are splashed with blood. Why,
why, why? Why all this blood? I'm a doctor, but I can't understand such
things. They say [they] come to free us? Is this freedom?

There was no overt support for Saddam Hussein, but all blamed the US for
the bombing. There was no hostility towards western reporters invited by
families to witness their grief.

America did this to us, said 50-year-old Kadhim Ali. Why does it hate
the Iraqi people?

Noam Chomskies money shot.

The big gun takes a pop-shot at peace
By Noam Chomsky
March 29 2003
If anything is obvious from the history of warfare, it's that very little
can be predicted.

In Iraq, the most awesome military force in human history has attacked a
much weaker country, an enormous disparity of force.

It will be some time before even preliminary assessments of the
consequences can be made. Every effort must be dedicated to minimising the
harm, and to providing the Iraqi people with the huge resources required
for them to rebuild their society, post-Saddam - in their own way - not as
dictated by foreign rulers.

There is no reason to doubt the near-universal judgement the war in Iraq
will only increase the threat of terrorism and the development and use of
weapons of mass destruction, for revenge or deterrence.

In Iraq, the Bush Administration is pursuing an imperial ambition that
is, rightly, frightening the world and turning the United States into an
international pariah.

The avowed intent of current US policy is to assert a military power that
is supreme in the world and beyond challenge. US preventative wars may be
fought at will; preventative, not pre-emptive. Whatever the justifications
for pre-emptive war might sometimes be, they do not hold for the very
different category of preventative war; the use of force to eliminate a
contrived threat.

That policy opens the way to protracted struggle between the United States
and its enemies, some of them created by violence and aggression and not
just in the Middle East. In that regard, the US attack on Iraq is an answer
to Osama bin Laden's prayers.

For the world the stakes of the war and its aftermath almost couldn't be
higher. To select just one of many possibilities, destabilisation in
Pakistan could lead to a turnover of loose nukes to the global network of
terrorist groups, which may well be invigorated by the invasion and
military occupation of Iraq. Other possibilities, no less grim, are easy to
conjure up.

Yet the outlook for more benign outcomes isn't hopeless, starting with the
world's support for the victims of war and murderous sanctions in Iraq.

A promising sign is that opposition to the invasion has been entirely
without precedent.

By contrast, 41 years ago this month, when the Kennedy administration
announced that US pilots were bombing and strafing in Vietnam, protest was
almost nonexistent. It did not reach any meaningful level for several years.

Today there is large-scale, anti-war protest all over the world. The peace
movement acted forcefully even before the new Iraq war started.

That reflects a steady increase over these years in unwillingness to
tolerate aggression and atrocities, one of many such changes worldwide. The
activist movements of the past 40 years have had a civilising effect.

By now, the only way for the United States to attack a much weaker enemy is
to construct a huge propaganda offensive depicting it as the ultimate evil,
or even as a threat to our very survival. That was Washington's scenario
for Iraq.

Nevertheless, peace activists are in a far better position now to stop the
next turn to violence, and that is a matter of extraordinary significance.

A large part of the opposition to Bush's war is based on recognition that
Iraq is only a special case of the imperial ambition declared forcefully
in last September's National Security Strategy.

For perspective on our current situation, it may be useful to attend to
very recent history. Last October the nature of threats to peace was
dramatically underscored at the summit meeting in Havana on the 40th
anniversary of the Cuban missile crisis, attended by key participants from
Cuba, Russia and the US.

The fact we survived the crisis was a miracle. We learned that the world
was saved from nuclear devastation by one Russian submarine captain, Vasily
Arkhipov, who countermanded an order to fire nuclear missiles when Russian
submarines were attacked by US destroyers near Kennedy's quarantine line.
Had Arkhipov agreed, the nuclear launch would have almost certainly set off
an interchange that could destroy the Northern hemisphere, as Eisenhower
had warned.

The dreadful revelation is particularly timely because of the
circumstances. The roots of the missile crisis lay in international
terrorism aimed at regime change, two top-of-mind concepts today.

US terrorist attacks against Cuba began shortly after Castro took power,
and were sharply escalated by Kennedy, right up to the missile crisis and
beyond.

The new discoveries demonstrate with brilliant clarity the terrible and
unanticipated risks of attacks on a much weaker enemy aimed at regime
change, risks that could doom us all.

The US is forging new and dangerous paths over near-unanimous world opposition.

There are two ways for Washington to respond to the threats that are, in
part, engendered by its actions and startling proclamations.

One way is to try to alleviate the

Yep. This led to complaints about showing POWs on TV violating the Geneva
convention. For some reason, when CNN showed Iraqi POWs, we didn't notice
a problem. (At some level, I think the projections of the people at the
top were so optimistic, that a lot of people were just shocked that the
Iraqis didn't just collapse and welcome the soldiers into Baghdad with
flowers and cheering. This has a really depressing parallel with the way we
jumped intp Vietnam, though I don't think the Iraqi soldiers are anywhere
near as tough and committed as the NVA.)

Iraq replied by asking them to follow the geneva
convention and not to do cluster bombing in civilan
areas.
Be fair about this. We own the skies above Baghdad, at least above the
range of small-arms fire. If we wanted the streets of Baghdad choked with
corpses, they would be. Basically, civilian casualties have been the
result of a small number of bombs missing targets, or screwed up targeting,
or bystanders getting hit when they're too close to what looks like a
miliatary target. I think we've probably played up our bombing accuracy a
bit too much, but it's not like we're targeting civilian areas. If we
were, the images from Baghdad would be very different; not just one market
with a bomb crater, and one hospital flooded with injured and dead people,
but every building reduced to smoldering ruins, and dead people so thick on
the ground you couldn't walk across it.

In any case US military pow's are going to have a hard
time and since U.S didnot give pow status to
*suspected* Al-Queda/taliban militants captured in
afghan war-no body is going to put pressure on iraq
either.
Well, there's not a whole lot more pressure we can put on the top
leadership of Iraq, since our public pronouncements have made clear that
Saddam, his kids, and presumably most of the rest of the top echelon of
Iraqi leadership is going to be jailed or executed when this is all
done. I guess specific generals may have an incentive to treat US POWs
better, since the issue will likely come up when the US takes over Iraq in
another month or two.

I think the usual inducement to treating POWs you hold properly is that you
want your soldiers who've been taken prisoner to be treated
properly. (There's also world opinion, which we care about a lot more than
Iraq does.) I'm not sure how important the Iraqi government considers our
treatment of their captured soldiers, though, and we're not going to shoot
them all even if the Iraqis do that to our captured soldiers.

Kagaa Kidney Company.

Strong crypto and warm kidneys make happy bedfellows here at kagaa.com

EU president Greece is proposing to ban all such trade, even in cases where
there is consent between the donor and the patient, with jail terms of up
to 10 years where minors or loss of life is involved.
Andersen, who was born in Denmark but has lived in London for the past 12
years, is thought to be the first person in Britain to publicly admit to
becoming a so-called transplant tourist, although the authorities suspect
his case is representative of many more.

Now back home in London's Mayfair district, Andersen says he has no regrets.

You can look at it as exploitation, he told The Sunday Times newspaper,
but donors who may be starving in Pakistan can survive for a long time on
the money and the patients get their lives back. It works both ways.

He first started to research live donors on the internet last October
after waiting almost 12 months for a suitable organ for transplant.

The trouble with the UK system is that you do not know if there are five
or 1000 people ahead of you on the waiting list even if a match turns up,
he said. I had a 50-50 chance of survival on dialysis for up to 10 years,
and when you're talking about my life it's just not good enough.

The first thing I came up with [on the internet] was the offer of kidneys
from Chinese prisoners. Some prices were up to £50,000.

Finally a friend in Saudi Arabia recommended the Masood hospital in Lahore
and said no brokers, prisoners or children were involved.

In January, Andersen flew to the hospital and within two weeks received a
new kidney.

I didn't want to meet the donor before the operation, he told The Sunday
Times.

People were burning American flags in the streets. I didn't want somebody
saying, 'I'm not giving my kidney to a European because we're not on the
same side of the fence.'

After the operation Andersen met the donor, a very shy and very happy
girl called Sumaira from a village outside Lahore and gave her an extra
£1000 as a token of my appreciation.

He said he hoped to have all the payments reimbursed from his international
private health-care insurance company.

I don't think they will refuse to pay because they were paying out £50,000
a year before the operation in dialysis costs, he said.

If they don't pay I will contest it because I've done nothing illegal.

The Sunday Times traced Sumaira, who told the newspaper her parents had
arranged the sale of her kidney to pay off a debt to a brick factory that
had charged high interest on a loan.

Out of the £3000 she received, her family paid £300 to a broker without the
knowledge of the hospital.

Of the balance, £1100 went to repay the loan and £165 was spent on
Sumaira's post-operative medication. The rest was used to purchase some land.

After the operation my body was aching with pain at least for two days,
but with the doses of antibiotics it started decreasing, said Sumaira.

Payments in exchange for live organs, although controversial, are not
illegal in Pakistan.

Although it is illegal to exchange money for organs in Britain, where there
are more than 4800 people on the waiting list for kidney transplants, there
is nothing to stop patients travelling abroad and paying for organs to be
transplanted from living donors.

 Anti-war Protestors: It's Time YOU
 Start Imitating Our Troops!
 By Lisa S. Dean

When it comes to supporting freedom of speech, I'm right there fighting with
the next guy. But as with anything, there are limits to what freedom of
 speech can tolerate.

Oh really? When I hear someone say there are limits to freedom of speech,
I want to pick up a gun.

In San Francisco last week, protesters rallied carrying a banner reading,
We Support Our Troops Who Shoot Their Officers. Now, moronic slogans such
as Bush is Hitler and Uncle Sam is a Terrorist are tolerated because we,
as a nation, support the right for even the dumbest of our citizens to
publicly dissent. That's what democracy is all about, or so they say.
But that banner isn't expressing dissent and it's not freedom of speech.
It's supporting sedition and is downright treasonous.

Bullshit! The real traitors to Amerikkka are people like you and Dubbya. The
troops are out and out war criminals. They are the most evil force on the
planet at this time.

In an attempt to calm the fury of patriots who wanted to rip these
protesters in two, an apparently soft-hearted resident of San Francisco
rationally explained where these protestors were coming from. He opined
that they have fallen on hard times because of the dot.com failures and are
lashing out at anything in order to vent their frustration. Nice try but NO
SALE! You mean to say that someone can act irresponsibly, even going so far
as to put the lives of others at risk, just because you are throwing a
temper tantrum over your miserable, sorry life? I don't think so.
Look, whatever you may think about this war, remember that these men and
women are serving their nation and as a citizen of their nation, they are
serving YOU. They are putting their lives at risk FOR YOU. They aren't
doing this for publicity, or for some other self-serving reason, they are
doing it FOR YOU. And in case you didn't hear me, let me say it again, THEY
ARE RISKING THEIR LIVES FOR YOU!

The fuck they are. They are over there to rob and murder the Iraqi people.
My most fervent prayer is that they each and every one die the most
extruciatingly horrible and painful death possible. And when the body bags
start coming back, I plan to make a personal pilgrimage around the country to
piss on as many of their graves as possible.

I'm scanning all four COWed networks--CNN, Fox, MSNBC, CNBC--for images
from the downtown Baghdad market and housing area strike. Supposedly Al
Jazeera is showing the images of dismembered children, frantic searches
under rubble, body parts blown against walls. Estimates are of 50 dead,
though this may change. ...
The BBCA evening news hosted by the lovely Mishal Hussein showed it
all. Grown men screaming and crying over lost loved ones, a worried
man muttering Allah Akhbar in clinging hope, a ten year old boy
weeping near a puddle of blood on a stone stairway, frantic women
screaming in hospital hallways, a child in hospital minus two legs.
They were not targeted deliberately but that doesn't seem to console
them.

The specific operation underway now called Operation Iraqi Freedom is
one small part of a much larger operation called The Project for a New
American Century. This project aims, among other things, to depose
brutal totalitarian dictators if and only if they make the mistake of
opposing the interests of the U.S. government and its corporate
partners without first acquiring nuclear weapons. The upside of the
Project is that some brutal totalitarian dictators might possibly be
replaced with the sort of kinder and gentler dictators we enjoy here in
America. Which is good as far as it goes. Fewer people get thrown
feet-first into plastic shredders, for example.

I believe this Project will make more Arabs rally in support of firm
Islamic government, reject Western culture and ideals, join radically
anti-American militias, and commit more attacks against Americans.
This threat will make more Americans rally in support of the U.S.
government and gladly throw votes, dollars, and freedoms at the feet of
those who promise security. This widespread popular support will
enable the U.S. government to employ military tactics both domestically
and abroad for the stated purpose of enhancing security. Of course,
war is a racket, and the racket here is to expand the power and wealth
of the government and its corporate partners.

 CONFIDENTIAL
BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY

I am an Attorney and close confidant of MRS. MARYAM ABACHA, the former first lady and
wife of the late GEN. SANI ABACHA, the
former head of state and commander in chief of the armed forces of the Federal
Republic of Nigeria.

She (MRS. M. ABACHA), has as a result of the trust and confidence she has in me
mandated that I search for a reliable and
trustworthy foreign partner, who will help receive some funds which she had in cash
totaling US$45m (Forty Five Million United
States Dollars Only) into a personal, company or any reliable foreign bank account for
safe keeping for a short period of time,
since her family bank accounts within and outside the country have all been frozen by
the authorities. (I would refer you to the
website of .http://www.transnationale.org/anglais/sources/tiersmonde/dirigeants__aba
http://allafrica.com/stories/200203180074.html
http://www.time.com/time/europe/magazine/2000/27/swiss.html ,for further
information about these monies and the ABACHAS)

This money in question has however, been carefully kept in defaced form and deposited
with a securitycompany that has
branches in Europe and America. You may therefore be required to travel to any of the
branches to collect the money on behalf
of my client for safe keeping. It may also interest you to know that she (MRS.ABACHA)
and her family have, since the inception of
the present democratic government, been placed under partial house arrest, with their
international traveler´s passports
withdrawn pending the resolution of current fund recovery face - off between them and
he present RTD GEN. OBASANJO led
Federal Government, which from all indications will not exceed this year. She has
decided to offer anybody who will be willing
to render this tremendous assistance 20% of the total sum, while 5% shall be set aside
for incidental expenses.Note that this
transaction involves no risks whatsoever, as you will
 will deal directly with
the security company, which is based where the money is right now.

Let me have your confidential Tel/Fax Numbers in your response to this proposal.I
shall let you into a complete picture of this
mutually beneficial transaction when I have received your anticipated positive reply.
This matter should be treated as urgent and
confidential. This is very important.

Best Regards,

RE: U.S. Drops 'E-Bomb' On Iraqi TV

On Sat, 29 Mar 2003, Sarad AV wrote:

The images shown at the begining of the war showing
iraqi soldiers surrending and walking up with their

Iraqi tv then showed a iraqi general with a large

when I have this (rifle) in my hand,i wont die
 without killing two of them.

So why is the US complaining about their troops on the air?

After the war started around 3 civilians have
joined the war as small unorganised groups.

On invasion of your homeland is different than pushing you out of someone
else's home. I don't think the US figured that one out.

If the war drags to mid april the US troops wont stand
the intense heat,i mean its going to hard for them.

They are tough. But if the Iraqi's are saving their bug spray for summer,
then the US troops won't be moving too fast for sure.

properly. (There's also world opinion, which we
care about a lot more than
  Iraq does.)

I wont beleive that any more-the US doesn't listen any
more to the world, its gone blind and deaf.

I totally agree. The US has lost everything in terms of world opinion.
We are morons led by an insane lunatic and the US needs to be dealt with
accordingly. Once we start invading Syria, the world will retaliate in a
big way. We're already building excuses to do so, so I won't be supprised
if the US accidentally bombs a few targets inside Syria.

Suspected al-queda/taliban prisoners were put in 6*8
meter cages in the open sun and badly beaten up-I
remember seeing that on tv.They weren't given pow
status either.May be they didn't look like humans :)

Which is how the rest of the world will treat US POW's from now on too.
I bet the weekend warriors weren't betting on that!

hopefully they are treated well as its no fault of
theirs that they are dragged into this war with iraq.

You gotta use pawns when you have them. The US is streatched really thin
now. A major attack on it's interests in South America would prove
difficult to defend. Same with Korea and Taiwan. The nut cases in
Washington are very capable of doing something really stupid and I don't
think they appreciate how much military power can be brought to bear
against them. If it stays in Iraq, the US has a chance. If they decide
to make it bigger, the US will be toast.

C'est la vie, n'est pas?

Patience, persistence, truth,
Dr. mike

Astonishing Amounts of Cash Quickly and Easily."

If you're ready to grab your share of the incredible
Internet riches now available, then my cutting edge
techniques are guaranteed to jam your pockets full.

>From the Desk
of Shawn Casey

Hello,

Everyday, thousands of people start an online business.

Everyday, most fail. Not for the lack of enthusiasm or
the lack of money. Not for the lack of higher education.
Nope.

They fail because they don't have a clue what they're
doing. They've got no plan of action. Or worse yet, a
bad plan from some yahoo with a big mouth and no
success.

You might be among the millions of people who've tried
and failed. Let me tell you...

It's not your fault! You were given bad information.
A snowball has a better chance of staying frozen in a
blast furnace than you do of succeeding without the
right info.

How do I know this? Been there. Done that. Got the
t-shirts to prove it. Made every mistake you can think
of and several you have thought of yet.

What I also now know is the real plan that works all the
time - every time - to rake in cash online. I do it myself
everyday and brought in $3,086,405.27 in 2002.

Go here right now to see proof:
http://www.webimagehost.com/greatoffers2/t2017.html?u=

I've helped thousands of people get started online:

"Simply Amazing! I made $1,663.20 in just 4 days using your
techniques. That's real cash in my pocket. I can't wait to see
how much I make in 15 days. Shawn, you are absolutely right. . .
the Internet really is a gold mine. Thanks for helping me
get my share of the gold!"
Jesus Mejias, Miami, FL

Jesus is just one of thousands who're now taking the
Internet by storm.

Who can benefit from my cutting-edge strategies?

- Anyone who wants to unleash the massive money-generating
power of the Internet.
- Anyone who's wants to escape their dead-end, go-nowhere job.
- Anyone who's ready to enjoy the freedom that only cash can
bring.

Get started now.
http://www.webimagehost.com/greatoffers2/t2017.html?u=

Dedicated to your success,

Shawn M. Casey, J.D.

P.S. We both know you don't have to do this. You have
a choice. You can continue to suffer through week after
week struggling from paycheck to paycheck. That's
absolutely your choice.

Just don't expect anything in your life to change until
you decide to take the first step. When you do, your
life will change forever.

Take the step.

DEAR FRIEND,

I AM MRS. SESE-SEKO WIDOW OF LATE PRESIDENT MOBUTU SESE-SEKO OF ZAIRE? NOW KNOWN AS
DEMOCRATIC
REPUBLIC OF CONGO (DRC). I AM MOVED TO WRITE YOU THIS LETTER, THIS WAS IN CONFIDENCE
CONSIDERING MY
PRESENT CIRCUMSTANCE AND SITUATION.

I ESCAPED ALONG WITH MY HUSBAND AND TWO OF OUR SONS TIMOTHY KONGOLO AND BASHER OUT OF
DEMOCRATIC
REPUBLIC OF CONGO (DRC) TO ABIDJAN, COTE D'IVOIRE WHERE MY FAMILY AND I SETTLED, WHILE
WE LATER MOVED
TO SETTLED IN MORROCO WHERE MY HUSBAND LATER DIED OF CANCER DISEASE. HOWEVER DUE TO
THIS SITUATION
WE DECIDED TO CHANGED MOST OF MY HUSBAND'S BILLIONS OF DOLLARS DEPOSITED IN SWISS BANK
AND OTHER
COUNTRIES INTO OTHER FORMS OF MONEY CODED FOR SAFE PURPOSE BECAUSE THE NEW HEAD OF
STATE OF (DR)
MR LAURENT KABILA HAS MADE ARRANGEMENT WITH THE SWISS GOVERNMENT AND OTHER EUROPEAN
COUNTRIES
TO FREEZE ALL MY LATE HUSBAND'S TREASURES DEPOSITED IN SOME EUROPEAN COUNTRIES. HENCE
MY
CHILDREN AND I DECIDED LAYING LOW IN AFRICA TO STUDY THE SITUATION TILL WHEN THINGS
GETS BETTER, LIKE
NOW THAT PRESIDENT KABILA IS DEAD AND THE SON TAKING OVER (JOSEPH KABILA). ONE OF MY
LATE HUSBAND'S
CHATEAUX IN SOUTHERN FRANCE WAS CONFISCATED BY THE FRENCH
GOVERNMENT,AND AS SUCH I HAD TO CHANGE MY IDENTITY SO THAT MY INVESTMENT WILL NOT BE
TRACED AND
CONFISCATED. I HAVE DEPOSITED THE SUM OF EIHGTEEN MLLION UNITED STATE DOLLARS
US$18,000,000,00.)
WITH A SECURITY COMPANY , FOR SAFEKEEPING. THE FUNDS ARE SECURITY CODED TO PREVENT
THEM FROM
KNOWING THE CONTENT. WHAT I WANT YOU TO DO IS TO INDICATE YOUR INTEREST THAT YOU WILL
ASSIST US BY
RECEIVING THE MONEY ON OUR BEHALF.ACKNOWLEDGE THIS MESSAGE, SO THAT I CAN INTRODUCE
YOU TO MY SON
(KONGOLO) WHO HAS THE
OUT MODALITIES FOR THE CLAIM OF THE SAID FUNDS. I WANT YOU TO ASSIST IN INVESTING THIS
MONEY, BUT I WILL
NOT WANT MY IDENTITY REVEALED. I WILL ALSO WANT TO BUY PROPERTIES AND STOCK IN
MULTI-NATIONAL
COMPANIES AND TO ENGAGE IN OTHER SA
TMENTS. MAY I AT THIS POINT EMPHASISE
THE HIGH LEVEL OF ONFIDENTIALITY, WHICH THIS BUSINESS DEMANDS, AND HOPE YOU WILL
NOT BETRAY THE TRUST AND CONFIDENCE, WHICH I REPOSE IN YOU. IN CONCLUSION, IF YOU WANT
TO ASSIST US ,
MY SON SHALL PUT YOU IN THE PICTURE OF THE BUSINESS,TELL YOU WHERE THE FUNDS ARE
CURRENTLY BEING
MAINTAINED AND ALSO DISCUSS OTHER MODALITIES INCLUDING REMUNERATION FOR YOUR SERVICES.

FOR THIS REASON KINDLY FURNISH US YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION, THAT IS YOUR PERSONAL
TELEPHONE AND
FAX NUMBER FOR CONFIDENTIAL PURPOSE AND ACKNOWLEDGE RECEIPT OF THIS MAIL USING THE
ABOVE EMAIL
ADDRESS.

P.S. We both know you don't have to do this. You have
a choice. You can continue to suffer through week after
week struggling from paycheck to paycheck. That's
absolutely your choice.

Just don't expect anything in your life to change until
you decide to take the first step. When you do, your

[Perle] Adviser to U.S. Aided Maker of Satellites

Adviser to U.S. Aided Maker of Satellites

March 29, 2003
By STEPHEN LABATON

WASHINGTON, March 28 - While he led an influential Pentagon
advisory board, Richard N. Perle advised a major American
satellite maker, Loral Space and Communications, as it
faced government accusations that it improperly transferred
rocket technology to China, administration officials said
today.

Officials at the State Department said that the senior
official considering how to resolve the rocket matter,
Assistant Secretary Lincoln P. Bloomfield Jr., was
contacted by Mr. Perle once or twice in the second half of
2001 on behalf of the company. At the time, Mr. Bloomfield,
who heads the State Department's bureau of
political-military affairs, and other officials were
investigating accusations that Loral turned over expertise
that significantly improved the reliability of China's
nuclear missiles.

We have an office, our political-military office, led by
Assistant Secretary Linc Bloomfield, who did receive
queries from Mr. Perle, Secretary of State Colin L. Powell
said in response to a question during an interview today.
And quite appropriate, since Richard was, I guess,
authorized for Loral to ask. In conducting our regular
business I know that Linc and members of Linc's staff did
have conversations with Richard Perle. We would do that
with anybody who is authorized to call and ask of such
matters.

Mr. Perle said this afternoon that he was retained by Loral
seven months before his appointment by Defense Secretary
Donald H. Rumsfeld to head the Defense Policy Board and was
given a one-time retainer at the outset of his work.

I was retained by Loral in January 2001 to assist the
company in assessing its dispute with the government
concerning transfers of technology to the Chinese, to
recommend approaches to settling that dispute including new
security arrangements to assure against any further
technology leakage, he said. At no time did I urge any
government official to settle the case.

He said any conversations he may have had with Mr.
Bloomfield or his staff related to the licensing of other
Loral satellites for the Chinese and that he was not
compensated by the company in connection with that
activity.

Mr. Perle declined to say how much he was paid by Loral. He
said he did not file a lobbying disclosure statement
because he did no lobbying on behalf of Loral.

After criticism of his business deals, Mr. Perle announced
on Thursday that he would resign as chairman of the Defense
Policy Board but would remain on the board. In July 2001,
he was appointed to head the board, a group of influential
advisers that meets regularly with the defense secretary
and other top officials, has access to classified
information and plays an important role in shaping military
policy.

Several Democratic lawmakers have called on Mr. Perle to
step down from the board in light of his business
relationships. Mr. Perle has told friends that he sees the
criticism as being motivated by opponents of his strong
view about the need to go to war in Iraq.

The case against Loral, which originated in 1997 with a
Pentagon finding that Loral and Hughes Electronics had
improperly turned over technical information to the
Chinese, was settled in January 2002. Loral, without
admitting or denying that it had violated the law, agreed
to pay a $20 million penalty, the largest settlement of a
technology transfer case at the time.

The government accused Loral of providing Chinese officials
with confidential materials from an American panel that
investigated the February 1996 crash of a Loral satellite,
which was built for Intelsat, the international consortium,
and was launched by a Chinese Long March rocket.

The inquiry into Loral and other companies resulted in
restrictions that have prevented the industry from seeking
new business with China.

The Defense Department declined to say what Mr. Rumsfeld
knew about Mr. Perle's work for Loral. In a statement on
Thursday accepting Mr. Perle's resignation, Mr. Rumsfeld
said that he had known Mr. Perle for many years and know
him to be a man of integrity and honor.

Jeanette Clonan, a spokeswoman at Loral, said last week
that she would ask Bernard L. Schwartz, the company's
chairman and chief executive, about Mr. Perle's role in the
case. Since then, Ms. Clonan has not replied to daily
messages, including one today, left at her office, seeking
comment. Other people involved in the case have said Mr.
Perle was retained on the instructions of Mr. Schwartz, who
came under criticism by some Republicans during the Clinton
administration for being one of the largest political
donors to Democrats.

Mr. Schwartz retained a prominent team to defend the
company in the investigation. Among those who worked on the
matter were Douglas J. Feith, who is now under secretary of
defense for policy. Mr. Feith is also an old friend and

Washington, D.C — The 57-year-old boy Emperor accused of beating a
12-year-old to death after luring him out of a library had been expelled
from school, according to a published report.
The 57-year-old is charged with murder, felony murder, kidnapping,
aggravated sexual assault, and weapons offenses. Neighbors described him as
a bully who threw rocks, picked fights and vandalized cars and homes.
A funeral is scheduled Monday for Saddam Hussein, who died Thursday, one
day after he was beaten with a baseball bat, sexually assaulted and left
for dead in a ditch.
The Star-Ledger of Texas, citing unnamed sources, reported Saturday that
the older boy had been expelled sometime within the past six months for
disruptive behavior.
The school district had arranged for a teacher to instruct him at the
Methodist branch library. He had just completed his lesson Wednesday
afternoon when, authorities say, he lured Saddam outside and attacked him.
One was the neighborhood hellion, a 57-year-old raised by a blind, deaf and
legally dumb simple father, reviled for throwing rocks, picking fights and
vandalizing cars and homes. The other was a trusting toddler eagerly
learning his ABCs, content to while away the hours coloring maps, munching
on dates or listening to the local librarian read aloud from the Koran.
The two young lives collided with deadly results Wednesday when police say
the older boy lured the 12-year-old out of the library, beat him with a
baseball bat, sexually assaulted him and dumped him in a drainage ditch.
The 12-year-old boy died the next morning from what an autopsy on Friday
determined was blunt trauma to the head, and having his face submerged
under running water. The other boy, who was not identified by authorities,
but is known to be George Walker Bush of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, was
charged with murder.

GULF WAR II: U.S. AND BRITAIN DEFY INTERNATIONAL LAW

by Randolph T. Holhut
American Reporter Correspondent
Dummerston, Vt.
DUMMERSTON, Vt. -- Picture President Bush and Saddam Hussein sharing a cell
in The Hague after they have been tried and convicted for crimes against
humanity.

Sound improbable?

Maybe the bunking up in the cell part is improbable, but the words war
crimes and President Bush are starting to be uttered in the same
sentence with total seriousness in the wake of Persian Gulf War II.

The United States, aided by Britain and a smattering of Australians,
invaded Iraq on March 20. The world has been able to see that when
confronted with America's awesome military might, Iraq is barely able to
defend itself, let alone threaten other nations.

It is telling that the much-ballyhooed coalition of the willing turns out
to be a vapor. Few nations are providing substantial military assistance
for Gulf War II.

Poland and Spain each offered 200 troops. Denmark offered a submarine and a
destroyer. Turkey and Italy, is allowing U.S. planes to land or fly in
their airspace. The countries of New Europe - such as the Czech Republic,
Bulgaria, Hungary, Ukraine, Slovakia and Romania - have offered to help
with the post-war cleanup.

And there are the great world powers such as Afghanistan, Albania,
Azebaijan, Columbia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Eritrea, Estonia,
Ethiopia, Georgia, Honduras, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia,
Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Mongolia, Netherlands, Nicaragua, Palau,
Philippines, Rwanda, Soloman Islands, Uganda and Uzbekistan. They've all
offered moral support, but little else. In the words of London's Daily
Mirror newspaper, they're a coalition of the bribed, bullied and blind.

Then there are the secret admirers list of pro-U.S. nations in the
Persian Gulf - Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan, Oman, Bahrain
and United Arab Emirates - that have refused to associate themselves
publicly with the war. Israel is supporting the war, but the U.S. is trying
to keep that fact quiet.

Contrast the members of coalition of the willing with the list of the
nations who aren't on it. Canada and Mexico have refused to support this
war. Likewise for France, Russia and China. Germany has offered help in
dealing with the postwar chaos, but isn't participating in the invasion.
Japan bankrolled a significant part of Gulf War I, but they're sitting this
war out.

There is a reason why so many nations are not wholeheartedly embracing the
invasion of Iraq. They don't want to find themselves in violation of
international law.

When President Bush declared on March 17 that the United States of America
has the sovereign authority to use force in assuring its own national
security, it sounded good on the surface. A closer examination suggests
otherwise.

According to the United Nations Charter - a treaty signed by 192 of the
world's 196 sovereign states - it is a crime for a nation to attack another
nation unless there is a clear and present danger to that nation's security.

This principle of waging war only in self-defense or with the explicit
approval of the UN Security Council has been occasionally evaded, but never
ignored outright. And when it comes to justifying an invasion, there's a
huge difference between attacking an enemy that has troops massed on your
border, and attacking an enemy that has never overtly threatened you
(except in response to your own threats) but may possibly pose a threat in
a few years.

In the view of President Bush, the U.S. reserves the right to attack any
nation it perceives to be a present or potential threat. The U.S. alone
reserves the right to determine the risk and dictate the remedy, and the
president will have the sole discretion to make the decision to go to war.

This policy, which is getting its first test in Iraq, stands in direct
violation of international law.

UN Security Council Resolution 1441, adopted last fall, ordered Iraq to
begin disarming. For the most part, Iraq had complied with the terms of
1441. The inspections were working, weapons were being dismantled and no
weapons of mass destruction had been found.

That was good enough for the rest of the Security Council, but not good
enough for the U.S. and Britain. They claimed Iraq was in material breech
of 1441 and claimed the right to forcibly disarm Iraq.

But if you read the text of Resolution 1441, there is no specific
authorization in it for

Protests renewed worldwide as public fears long Iraq conflict
Campaigners are taking to the streets across the world once again to protest against the Iraq war, amid mounting public fears the US-British forces could become embroiled in a bloody and prolonged conflict.
Particularly strong turnouts were awaited in Britain and Spain, whose governments have offered unwavering support to Washington throughout the Iraqi crisis.
A thousand young people were filling the main square in Athens to protest against the war, with young Communists waving a swathe of red flags dominant among the participants.
One banner showed the US flag with a swastika in place of the usual stars.
Faced with the facilities, rebellion is a duty, a placard said, referring to the Greek military facilities offered to the US army.
In a possible anti-US protest on Friday night, unknown individuals threw a grenade into a McDonalds fast food restaurant in Athens, damaging the interior.
In the French town of Arles on Saturday, 30 anti-war protesters covered petrol pumps at a filling station owned by US oil giant Esso with a massive black tarpaulin emblazoned with the words the bloody stupidity of war.
Covering the symbol of the multinationals in black is an expression of our anger, our sadness and feelings for the innumerable victims, one of the organisers said.
Thousands of demonstrators marched on the US consulate in South Africa's Cape Town to protest against the war in Iraq, burning US flags and chanting anti-American slogans.
The protesters, estimated by SAPA news agency to number more than 10,000, demanded the expulsion of the US and British ambassadors in South Africa.
In Bangladesh, police said some 5,000 members of the Islamic group Shashantantro Andolon staged a peaceful protest and tried to march on the guarded diplomatic areas in the capital Dhaka.
On Friday local time, Bangladesh, the world's third largest Muslim-majority country, saw 10,000 people turn out in Dhaka to demand an end to the invasion of Iraq, torching a large number of effigies of US President George W Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Tens of thousands of people were expected to turn out at protests on Saturday local time in London, Berlin, Paris, Barcelona, Rome and several other European cities.
The Stop the War Coalition was planning demonstrations across Britain as the bodies of the first British servicemen to die in the conflict were being flown home.
The protests were designed to target the war coverage provided by public broadcaster BBC, which the anti-war coalition says is merely regurgitating the Government's line, and to vent mounting public anger at the rising number of civilian casualties.
The protest in Barcelona was to targeted the offices of Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar's ruling Popular Party, the only political faction in Spain to openly support the war.
In Germany, organisers were expecting 50,000 people to form a spectacular 50-kilometre human chain between the north-western cities of Muenster and Osnabrueck, where peace treaties putting an end to the bloody 1618-1648 war were signed.
Anti-war campaigners in Berlin said they hoped Saturday's demonstration in the German capital would have as many participants as three previous rallies, which drew between 40,000 and 70,000 people.
Organisers were also expecting 5,000 people to take part in a sit-in at a US military base in Frankfurt, where they would form a human chain around the US European Command headquarters.
China's police have given the go-ahead for the country's first anti-war protests on Sunday but have strictly limited the numbers allowed to take part.
One demonstration is to be held by a group of intellectuals in a park and another by students of the prestigious Beijing University, the organisers said on Saturday.
Beijing has until now refused to allow its people to take to the streets, fearing activists could be emboldened to take on domestic targets.
Public hostility to the war has remained strong in most European countries, with the press offering few notes of optimism on the progress of the US and British military campaign.
A CSA poll published in French daily Liberation on Saturday showed that 78 per cent of the public in France opposed the war, with 79 per cent saying they had no confidence in US President George W Bush.
Other polls showed overwhelming majorities of people in Spain, Italy and Portugal were deeply opposed to the conflict, even though all three countries' governments have given the United States full support for its war.

Memorial Day Cancelled?

2003-03-29 Thread professor rat

Queensland police are closely reviewing security arrangements for Anzac
Day services around the state.
The review comes after ex-servicemen's groups cancelled two military
marches in Brisbane in the past week because of concerns about anti-war
protests.
National Servicemen's Association of Australia spokesman Allan Callaghan
says many members are opting not to march this year for fear of protests.

If anybody has a difference about the war, as the PM says take it
up with the Government... don't take it up with war veterans, he
said.
I cannot think of anything that would generate any more hostility
than an attack on Anzac Day... imagine an old digger like say the late
Eric Abrahams or Ted Smout hit by a paint bomb or a
flower.
Foreign Minister Alexander Downer has told Channel Nine any attempt to
disrupt Anzac day commemorations would backfire on the anti-war
movement.
From the protesters point of view, ultimately it is entirely
counter productive, it just turns the public more and more against the
attitudes and the positions of the protesters, he said.
So you know a protester who is politically cunning will organise a
peaceful pleasant protest, not an aggressive protest, particularly that
would do something like disrupt Anzac Day which has such totemic
significance for Australians.

Australian Defence Minister Robert Hill says the United States failed to
anticipate the extent to which Iraq would fight an unconventional
war.
He says Iraq's use of suicide bombers is another challenge for the
coalition forces, who are trying to cope with surrenders which turn into
attacks and soldiers pretending to be civilians.
He says the widespread use of such tactics has surprised the US-led
forces.
They underestimated the role of the militias within the smaller
cites and towns, he said.
Basically the militias are there to control the civil society but
they clearly are part of the defence plan and they've fought hard and
they've certainly resulted in some delays of progress.
Meanwhile, Senator Hill says the Government has not decided to send HMAS
Sydney to join the war in Iraq, even though its crew may be
preparing to leave soon.
A newspaper report today says the Sydney will leave for the Middle
East on April 7.
But Senator Hill has told Channel Seven it is not a firm date.
They may well have been told to be ready in that timetable but we
haven't decided to rotate the ships, he said.
But that is the most likely rotation because the ships they're
replacing have now been in the gulf for many months.

WTO negotiator abandons hope of meeting deadline
http://biz.thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2003/3/30/business/wtoagrisec=business
By NAOMI KOPPEL
GENEVA: The man leading negotiations on reducing barriers to international
trade in agriculture acknowledged Friday that it will be impossible to meet
next week’s deadline to set the framework for cuts because of intractable
national positions.

Stuart Harbinson told the 145-nation World Trade Organisation that
countries need to come up with new proposals and compromises.

The blueprint is supposed to be agreed on March 31, but negotiators now
fear the talking could continue for months.

An agreement on agriculture is seen by many as the key to a wider round of
trade liberalisation negotiations that are supposed to be completed by the
end of next year. Already the WTO has missed a number of deadlines, but
this failure would be the biggest so far.

US chief negotiator Allen Johnson this week claimed the problems were
caused by “the European Union's inability to engage and Japan's
unwillingness to engage.'' Those countries insist the talks must take
account of the fact that some subsidies are needed to ensure
self-sufficiency, consumer protection and animal welfare standards.

But EU negotiator Mary Minch denied that the 15-nation bloc is lagging
behind and said some countries were demanding a lot from the EU without
offering anything in return.

“We feel that we have put forward an ambitious and balanced proposal which
will move reform ahead in all the areas,’’ she said.

Countries have been making proposals for months on how to reduce import
tariffs on agricultural goods and cut back on subsidies paid to farmers,
but they disagree widely on which areas to tackle and how far to go.

While some nations – mostly large, agricultural exporting countries like
Australia, the United States and Brazil – want to see major cuts, importers
like the European Union and Japan have lesser ambitions.

Some developing countries, including India, say they need to see big cuts
to subsidies paid by rich nations before they would consider reducing
import duties.

Harbinson, who chairs the WTO committee negotiating on agriculture,
produced a proposal for the agreement in February which called for import
tariffs to be cut by up to 60%.

It also proposed the elimination of all subsidies linked to exports within
nine years and drastic cuts to other subsidies. But the Harbinson plan was
roundly criticised from all sides.

If agriculture discussions overrun, that could slow the progress in the
WTO’s other areas of negotiation, such as trade in manufactured goods and
trade in services like banking and telecommunications. – AP

Gencarslan commandeered the plane - on a Turkish domestic flight between
Istanbul and Ankara - reportedly because he was distraught with family
problems. The dozen candles were wrapped in grey paper, similar to that
used for dynamite, and attached to a makeshift belt, he added.
He entered cockpit and showed the captain the belt claiming it
contained explosives. At the same time he threatened the co-pilot with a
razor to his throat,
The Turkish man was charged yesterday with hijacking an airliner bound
for Ankara, as the plane's passengers returned safely home to an
emotional welcome from relatives after a night of heart-stopping drama. A
prosecutor in Athens charged Ozgur Gen- caslan, 20, with illegal
occupation of the aircraft and infringing the rules of flight, as well as
carrying a firearm, judicial sources said.
According to the Greek state secretary for transport, the lone hijacker
appeared to have psychological problems, while passengers on
the plane described him as pitifully frail and small. After a
night of high drama, weeping relatives yesterday greeted the passengers.

There were emotional scenes at Ankara's Esenboga airport, as the
passengers were flown safely home at dawn after the hijacker surrendered
peacefully, Turkish television footage showed.

Federales Attack Human Rights Bodies.

'Ludicrous' plan threatens human rights: council
Human rights in Australia will be seriously eroded under
proposed changes to the powers of the federal human rights body,
anti-discrimination agencies are warning.
The warning comes from the Council of Human Rights Agencies.
The council includes the equal opportunity commissions of Victoria,
Western Australia and South Australia, the Anti-Discrimination
Commissions of Queensland, the Northern Territory, and New South Wales
and the ACT Human Rights office.
The council argues that legislation introduced to federal parliament last
week will violate the independence of the Human Rights and Equal
Opportunity Commission by requiring it to obtain permission from the
Attorney-General before intervening in court cases.
Council chairwoman Diane Sisley says the commission will be left in the
ludicrous position of having to seek approval from a Government that may
be one of the parties involved in cases such as the Tampa
litigation.

Rumsfeld pressures Franks to take Baghdad quickly, sources say
BY JOSEPH L. GALLOWAY
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

WASHINGTON - Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and his civilian
aides have pressed Army Gen. Tommy Franks, the head of the U.S. Central
Command, to attack the Republican Guard divisions defending Baghdad as
soon as Air Force planes and Army attack helicopters have softened them
up, according to Pentagon officials.
The officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the civilian
war planners want to clear the way for a swift takedown of Saddam
Hussein's regime in the Iraqi capital.
So it apparently falls to one heavy Army division, one light Army
division and a division-plus force of Marine infantry to destroy at least
two and possibly more Republican Guard tank divisions dug in and blocking
the approaches to Baghdad.
In other words, roughly 100,000 U.S. servicemen could face about 30,000
Iraqi troops, not enough for the 4 or 5 to 1 ratio that conventional
military doctrine calls for when attacking an entrenched enemy.
The Americans are far better trained and equipped than the Iraqis, and
they have a huge technological edge, especially when fighting at night.
But military analysts say there may not be enough of them to do the
job.
Softening up the Medina, Baghdad and Hammurabi divisions from the air
will be absolutely vital to success. The question is whether the Air
Force is willing to take on the job.
One retired general who has closely followed the unfolding war plan told
Knight Ridder that the U.S. ground commanders in the Persian Gulf are
privately unhappy with the amount of close air support their troops are
getting from the Air Force, and likewise are unhappy that ``all of the
intelligence assets have been diverted to support the Air Force in
downtown Baghdad, leaving little or nothing for the ground
forces.''
He also said the Army's 3rd Infantry Division and V Corps were forced to
leave behind most of their long-range Multiple Launch Rocket Systems.
Rumsfeld told them that air power would do the job. ``But it is not doing
the job so far. It is focused elsewhere.''
The general, who also asked not to be identified, said the 3rd Infantry
was sent to war with only one battalion of MLRS rocket-launched
artillery, a powerful long-range system that can reach out 30 miles and
obliterate more than a third of a square mile of enemy soldiers or enemy
tanks. Usually, it would have brought two brigades of MLRS launchers,
about six battalions.
The V Corps also was sent into battle with one battalion of MLRS
launchers when usually it would have a separate brigade (three
battalions) to support its attack helicopters and several more brigades
for general operations.
What this means is that the front-line forces, which use the deadly MLRS
rockets to soften up the enemy positions while U.S. forces are still out
of range of Iraq's artillery, are now depending on the Air Force to
attack the Republican Guard divisions and clear the way for Apache attack
helicopters to kill the enemy tanks.
The general said he hoped that Franks could ''get the Air Force to step
up to the plate'' and work on the targets important to the ground
commanders and work with the Apaches. ''The Air Force really hates having
to do this,'' he said.
A senior Air Force official, William Bodie, said this wasn't true. ''Way
more than a third of the 600-700 daily sorties have been in support of
ground forces. There has been a tremendous amount of progress in our
ground support efforts since Afghanistan,'' he said.
Bodie said most of the damage to 30 Army Apache helicopters that
conducted a long-range raid on the Medina Division earlier this week was
caused by small-arms fire. ``That's guerrilla war stuff, Viet Cong stuff.
The Apaches were flying very low over a flat floodplain area and they
were very vulnerable. There's nothing we or the MLRS artillery could have
done about that.''
Pentagon officials said Rumsfeld had been pressing Franks to attack the
Republican Guard outside Baghdad without waiting for the 4th Infantry
Division (Mechanized) to arrive from Fort Hood, Texas, and the 3rd
Armored Cavalry Regiment, its scout unit, to be flown into the battle
zone from Fort Carson, Colo. Neither will be ready for battle for at
least three weeks.

Dire Mistake...

2003-03-29 Thread professor rat

Former CIA analyst: US ‘conned into war’
Robert Baer charges that the American-led invasion is a ‘dire
mistake’
BEIRUT: Middle East expert and former Central Intelligence Agency
officer Robert Baer has charged that the American-led war in Iraq is a
dire mistake based on false assumptions and faulty information, but that
President George W. Bush cannot stop now and leave Saddam Hussein in
power after the long emotional and political buildup to the war.
“The American people, Congress, government and president were conned into
this war, in the full sense of the word, by neo-conservatives and hawks
in Washington who sold a false bill of goods. The president was lied to
and given erroneous information that was filtered through Iraqi exiles
who had not lived in Iraq for 20 or 30 years and had no clear idea of
realities inside Iraq. The exiles had no intention of fighting
themselves, but wanted the US to fight for them,” he told The Daily Star
Thursday in an interview.
The 21-year CIA veteran quit the agency in good standing about five years
ago, and was given the Career Intelligence Medal for his service.
He called this “almost an accidental war,” against the backdrop of an
American population that did not bother with foreign affairs but suddenly
suffered the wrenching emotional experience of the Sept. 11, 2001
attacks.
“There was already in place among some circles in Washington an old plan
to attack Iraq. After Sept. 11, 2001 it was sold to the president, who
was told that this would be a quick, decisive, easy, almost bloodless
operation, at little expense and with no resistance by Iraqis, with
Saddam Hussein gone at a flash of the muzzle. But it has not worked out
that way. Determined Iraqis who stalled mechanized divisions in southern
Iraq are not just pockets of resistance. In its first week the war did
not go as planned.”
Baer, who has published a book on his years in the CIA and is now
publishing a second book about Saudi Arabia, said the worst scenario for
the US is to surround and lay siege to Baghdad and its 5 million
people.
He fears that this will increase the bitterness felt against the US by
Arabs and Muslims, who increasingly see Americans as hostile to them. He
is also concerned “that young Americans now are fighting and dying in
Iraq based on faulty analyses from questionable sources,” but he cannot
see Bush stopping the war now.
“President Bush spent nine months working the American population into a
frenzy of fear and anger about Saddam Hussein, and he cannot now tell
them that it was not so serious after all, that he has to stop the war
and leave Saddam in power.”
The best way to minimize long-term damage to the US’ standing in this
region is for Washington “to make a brisk, clean transition to Iraqi or
Iraqi-UN rule after the war ends, offer substantial assistance for
reconstruction, leave the Iraqis alone , and turn America’s attention
quickly to achieving a fair resolution of the Arab-Israeli conflict.”

As George Lucas said in Time Magazine:
All democracies turn into dictatorships—but not by coup. The people give
their democracy to a dictator, whether it's Julius Caesar or Napoleon or
Adolf Hitler. Ultimately, the general population goes along with the idea
... What kinds of things push people and institutions into this direction?

...That's the issue that I've been exploring: How did the Republic turn
into the Empire? That's paralleled with: How did Anakin turn into Darth
Vader? How does a good person go bad, and how does a democracy become a
dictatorship? It isn't that the Empire conquered the Republic, it's that
the Empire is the Republic.
Lucas' comments clarify the connection between the Anakin trilogy and the
Luke trilogy: that the Empire was created out of the corruption of the
Republic, and that somebody had to fight it.
One day Princess Leia and her friends woke up and said, 'This isn't the
Republic anymore, it's the Empire. We are the bad guys. Well, we don't
agree with this. This democracy is a sham, it's all wrong.'
The none-too-subtle staged terrorist attack against Senator Padme Amidala's
ship to usher in an era of security and ultimately the take-over by the
Dark Side did not go unnoticed. I didn't miss the similarities to the
problem-reaction-solution system that has been utilized by world leaders as
far back as the history books go. The kids who's parents paid $8 admission
charge for them to see Episode 2 didn't seem to miss the point. Even the
children got it.

Ask your average American why they think Hitler became supreme commander of
Germany. Did he just pull the wool over their eyes? Was everybody
brainwashed? or did his stormtroopers burn the Reichstag building down,
blame it on terrorists, and tell the people: I cannot protect you, unless
you give me full control.

Dead People
Don't
Go There
By KURT NIMMO
Naturally,
most Americans dread the prospect of US soldiers coming home in body
bags. It's not something Americans do well, this coming to terms with
engineered mass murder -- and yet large numbers of Americans support Bush
and his decision to invade Iraq.
How many dead GIs will America accept?
I'm not going there, because I don't know, said Dan Bartlett,
White House communications director.
The president looks at this knowing that when the commander in
chief talks about the use of force, the American people understand that
it may entail the sacrifices he has spoken of. And the president also
views this in the post-9/11 context, in which failure to act could lead
to the taking of even more lives, explained White House press
secretary, Ari Fleischer.
You know you're in trouble when they start talking about sacrifice. It
usually means a there will be a whole lot more dead people, maybe even a
few you know.
Numbers are abstract. 24 US soldiers killed. No names, no faces. That's
why the Iraqis broadcast images of POWs and the dead bodies of US
soldiers on TV the other day. It's both a propaganda war and a numbers
game.
Even so, Americans don't like to see their dead treated disrespectfully.
Good chance the Iraqis don't like to see their dead treated badly,
either, but apparently the message has not made it to the corporate
media. Images of dead Iraqi soldiers are all over newspapers, television,
and the web.
The coalition -- of two and one quarter -- bombed Iraq TV
after it showed the disrespectful video in question, but that will not
staunch the uncomfortable imagery. It leaks all over the place, if you
bother to take a look.
Such images rapidly deconstruct all abstractions the Bushites care to
make.
It suddenly gets personal, emotional. People begin to ask questions, ask
if this invasion is worth it. How many American kids need to die for
Bush, for Wolfowitz, Perle, Abrams, Bolton, the Kristols and Kagans and
Ledeens? 500? 5,000? 10,000? Somebody said the invasion might cost 12,000
US lives, ten percent of 120,000 troops.
How many dead Iraqi children and grandmothers are acceptable?
How many lives and how much money will this ill-defined and generally
considered illegal invasion cost?
Bush and Ari and Dan Bartlett want to avoid these questions. In fact,
Bush has called such questions silly and he refuses to answer
them. If you're worried about your kid in the military, how long he or
she will be in Iraq and what he or she are up against, let it be known
that Bush considers you silly.
Mass murder bothers most people, especially when it involves their loved
ones.
Bush is apparently not human, maybe he's a robot. Sometimes he looks like
a robot. Only robots feel nothing when they issue orders to kill
thousands of innocent humans.
Some people say Saddam's dead, he died from cancer four years ago. But
then it's obvious this whole thing is not about Saddam Hussein. It's
about Iraq and Israel, it's about oil and sending a message to the Arabs.
It's about the will of the Iraqi people who are now resisting invasion
and the theft of their country.
As a Christian (or rather a professed Christian) you'd think mass murder
would creep Bush out, considering the Ten Commandments and all. But then
the Old Testament is chock full of unreasonable violence and murder. The
God Bush listens to struck down all the firstborn in Egypt.
Bush's selected religion -- Christian Zionism -- embraces mass murder in
the name of the so-called Rapture and Second Coming of Christ. In short,
countless numbers of people are required to die for these selfish
Christian Zionists so they can get a free pass to heaven.
It's the Arabs now, but later it will be the Israeli Jews who face
extermination. Naturally, the Israelis exploit this sort of delusional
nonsense and use Christian Zionist support against their implacable
enemies, the Arabs.
Christian Zionists don't care about dead people, especially Palestinian
Arabs, all of who must die for the sake of their schizoid end-of-time
theology fantasies.
It's a matter of victory and the Iraqi people have got to know
that, you see, explained Bush the other day. They have got to
know that they will be liberated and Saddam Hussein will be removed no
matter how long it takes.
In other words, if it takes a dozen or more market bombings, or a
medieval siege of Baghdad, it's in the best interest of the Iraqis for
the US to blow them into cluster bomb crisscrossed chunks.
Did Bush even ask the Iraqis if they want to be liberated? No, because
liberation is not the issue here -- the wholesale looting of Iraq is the
issue.
Bush and his neo-con school of global piranhas don't care about the
Iraqis who will die of thirst, starvation, and disease as a result of
this criminal invasion and the eventual medieval siege of Baghdad. It's
the oil and the racist interests of the Israelis that matter, not the
fate of a few million Iraqis.
More practical types envision gushing oil wells,

The sky is dark with chickens coming home to roost.

By ALEXANDER
COCKBURN
The
situation of the US/UK invading force can be assessed as difficult. The
US 3rd Infantry Division, the Marines, Division, the 101st Airborne
continue to be plagued by stretched supply lines which yesterday saw one
Marine unit entirely immobilized by lack of diesel fuel and the food down
to one “meal” a day, with the MREs being decried by the soldiers as not
fit for human consumption. Disorganization is rife. The 3rd Infantry
Division marches up one side of the Euphrates, while their baggage and
supplies proceed up the other, which renders bridges more “strategic”
than ever. The helicopter assaults on the Iraqi Medina division left, on
one account, seven still serviceable. Two helicopters were lost in the
attack and twenty-six were damaged.
It is becoming clear that last week’s violent sandstorm was a very
serious blow to the invaders. The Iraqis were able to reinforce their
defenses around Najaf and assault launch some damaging attacks. US high
tech equipment has been seriously degraded by the sand. Perennial
warnings about excessive reliance on hi-tech weaponry and the hype of a
supposed Revolution in Military Affairs are now returning in force.

The US/UK forces have taken no major town, are being harassed by guerilla
forces and now menaced by suicide units. Five US soldiers of the Third
Infantry Division were killed by one such unit on a highway north of
Najaf. The British are attempting to win hearts and minds in Basra by
aiming their artillery at the food warehouses, and attempting to reduce
the city by plague, endeavoring to cut off the water supply. A missile
killed 200 in a shelter in Basra, allegedly a “command and control
center” which may by US/UK-speak for a civilian shelter, as with the
Amariya shelter in Baghdad in 1991.
Even the very base of the supply line in Kuwait is a choke point, not
just in the crowded and potential dangerous Persian Gulf but in the port
of Kuwait, which has only 21 landing births.
Behind the steady stream of “All according to plan”, and “calm and
orderly advance” press releases being pumped out of Qatar (always
excepting Wallace’s dissenting squeak that the war wasn’t going according
to war-game scenarios), and the Pentagon there is extreme nervousness
among seasoned military observers. Serious reinforcements will take weeks
to arrive. Optimists suggest that the US Third Infantry Division will
soon engage and destroy the Iraqi Medina division and the road to Baghdad
will lie open. A less sanguine assessment is that the two divisions will
bog down in a First World War-style confrontation, with the US
disadvantage of those stretched communications. The third scenario is
that the Medina division will outflank the Third ID, take it in the rear
and overwhelm it. Then the exultant Arab street will erupt in the
humiliation of the Great Satan.
Allah, 1, Jahweh, 0.
And so it will all get much, much
nastier. The actual fighting component of the invading US/British force
is small because (as anonymous Pentagon officers are now bitterly
complaining) Defense Secretary Rumsfeld's preference for Special Forces
prevailed over Gen. Tommy Franks's recommendation of a far larger force;
also because huge peace demonstrations in Turkey lopped off the northern
half of the invading pincers. If urban fighting increases, US strategy
will veer toward old-fashioned saturation bombing. The temptation to
flatten significant portions of Baghdad by B-52 raids is growing sharply
as the land force gets seriously stymied.
As regards the small US/UK force trying to overwhelm Baghdad, imagine a
force far less than one of the recent peace demonstrations landing in
Corpus Christi, Texas, then advancing towards Phoenix through sandstorms,
bypassing all major conurbations and occasionally announcing it has
successfully seized significant portions of the deserts of the south west
and nervously threatening to declare war on Mexico if it intervenes. (On
this latter point note that the Iranian backed Islamic council has told
its adherents in southern Iraq not to rise; also that the Kurds are
conspicuously sitting on their hands.
The Agitprop War
The propaganda war is not going according
to Western plans either. There are plenty of excellent and courageous
correspondents and observers in Baghdad, not least Paul Wood of the BBC.
Robert Fisk’s account
Bitter Truths of

importance of the Al Jazeera coverage in Basra. We have the truly
extraordinary situation that the Iraqi spokesman in Baghdad is being
given more credibility than the far wilder military flacks who have
seriously damaged their credibility with numerous baseless claims about
the capture of Iraqi towns, and preposterous British allegations that it
is necessary to destroy

Fawlty Towers - Episode 12.- Basel the Rat.

2003-03-29 Thread professor rat
American unilateralism over bank capital rules is upsetting Europeans

FOR the past five years, the world's financial regulators have been working
on a new set of rules for bank capital, called Basel 2. The idea is to
ensure that banks' capital matches the risks they carry: the riskier their
loan books, the more capital they should hold. The rules are not due to be
applied until January 2007, but if that deadline is to be met, Basel 2 must
be practically set in stone by this May.

The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, which is drawing up the rules,
is pleased with the results of its third (and supposedly last) impact
study. The study suggests that the complex new risk weightings to be
applied to different types of asset will produce appropriate levels of
capital for most of the world's banks.

The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision reports on progress towards the
new accord.

Getting this far has taken a lot of sweat and horse-trading. American
bankers and regulators have been at the forefront. American financial
institutions have debated the rule changes as keenly as anybody. And Bill
McDonough, head of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, has cracked the
whip as chairman of the Basel committee.

Imagine, therefore, the consternation of other committee members on
learning how America plans to treat the new rulebook. Some American bankers
and legislators are arguing that the proposed capital charge for
operational risk—a fundamental part of Basel 2—needs to be completely
rethought. Worse, American regulators intend to apply the new rules to
fewer than a dozen of their banks. At a congressional hearing last month,
they made it clear that the thousands of other American banks would
continue to use the less complex existing rulebook, Basel 1. In fact, Basel
1 is little different from the lowest of Basel 2's three grades of
sophistication. Nevertheless, the regulators believe that even this slight
change would be a waste of money for America's smaller banks.

Another transatlantic tiff
This is a choker for European regulators, who see Basel 2, like Basel 1, as
a global standard to be applied to all banks. Granted, the Federal Reserve
has always said that it would apply Basel 2 only to “internationally
active” banks. The surprise is that this means so few. It seems that banks
as big as State Street, Mellon Financial Corporation, and perhaps even Bank
of New York, which all have huge international payments and securities
operations, will escape. State Street and Mellon have been lobbying hard,
arguing that the Basel 2 charge for operational risk is too formulaic. They
say that operational risk—the risk of loss from systems failures, external
events, fraud etc—is impossible to quantify. It would be better if
supervisors monitored banks' efforts to mitigate these risks and then set a
subjective capital charge. But this is anathema to European regulators.

In Europe, a version of Basel 2 is to be incorporated into European Union
law and applied to all banks and investment firms, not just internationally
active banks. To this end, the European Commission hopes to publish a draft
directive in June. No wonder rulemakers in both Basel and Brussels are
furious with the Americans.

As things now look, different standards will apply to American and European
banks, giving the Americans a theoretically lower cost of making loans.
Karen Petrou of Federal Financial Analytics in Washington fears that the
American regulators' narrow application will allow some quite big American
banks to side-step realistic capital charges, by using the old Basel 1
loopholes. “The whole point of Basel 2 is to get rid of regulatory
arbitrage,” she comments.

However, members of the European Parliament (MEPs) might also try to
reshape the new rules—just as American congressmen have already tried.
Alexander Radwan, a German MEP who will report to the parliament on Basel
2, has several concerns. He thinks that capital charges that are more
sensitive to credit risk could curb lending to small companies, a fear
previously expressed also by the German government. And he dislikes the
idea of bank-supervision rules being drawn up and amended by unelected
experts (such as the Basel committee) outside the purview of politicians.

The Europeans also have some bargaining chips, which may yet produce a
compromise with the Americans. American banks cannot operate in Europe
under non-EU capital rules or supervision unless these are judged to be of
“equivalent” standard. American banks may find that Basel 1 will not be
deemed equivalent within the EU after 2006, when the commission's promised
directive is due to take effect. Moreover, some American investment banks
may be caught by another EU directive on financial conglomerates, which
comes into force in 2005. They may have to seek out a consolidated
supervisor with stronger oversight than their current one, the Securities
and Exchange

Number theory

Primed to go

Mar 27th 2003
From The Economist print edition
Mathematicians are discussing ways to make code-breaking easier

MATHEMATICS is often desperately abstract. Yet it has a great deal to say
about the world, from bombs and bridges to cars and codes. Keeping things
secret is vital not only to spies, but to anybody who uses a computer or a
credit card. The codes employed are all based on numbers, so understanding
the science of numbers, known as number theory, is fundamental to the
making and breaking of codes. That is why a workshop on number theory
organised in Palo Alto by the American Institute of Mathematics was not
quite as esoteric as it sounds.

What makes number theory interesting is that problems that are simple to
state (at least to mathematicians) are often fiendishly difficult to solve.
The most famous such problem, Fermat's last theorem, was postulated in the
17th century. It took until 1993 to prove that it was true.

The American Institute of Mathematics announces “Major Breakthrough in
Prime Number Theory”.

Last August, Manindra Agrawal, of the Indian Institute of Technology in
Kanpur, and two of his undergraduate students, proved another, less famous,
conjecture—that there is a fast way to show whether a number is prime.
Since prime numbers lie at the heart of cryptography, that might,
eventually, make codes easier to break.

A prime number is one that is divisible only by itself and 1. So the
obvious way to find out whether a number is prime is to try dividing it by
all numbers which are smaller than its square root. However, when a number
has hundreds of digits, factoring it this way is not as easy as its sounds.
Instead, mathematicians turn to other, indirect, methods that can test for
primality without factorisation. Until Dr Agrawal's discovery, even these
indirect methods were slow. Dr Agrawal's is not.

The algorithm at the centre of his method first checks whether the number
in question is a perfect square, cube, or other power of a smaller number.
If so, it is clearly not prime. If not, a sequence of tests using a type of
mathematics called modular arithmetic is carried out. If certain conditions
are satisfied, the number is definitely not prime. If they are not, then it
is. Crucially, the time it takes to run the algorithm increases only slowly
as the size of the number rises.

This discovery has triggered a flurry of developments, and it was these
that the workshop considered. The participants focused on two areas:
improving Dr Agrawal's technique, and using similar methods to attack other
problems in number theory. Hendrik Lenstra, of the University of
California, Berkeley, discussed with the assembled company one way to
simplify and speed up Dr Agrawal's algorithm. His method relies on some
fairly basic mathematics—indeed, it uses another of Fermat's theorems,
known as Fermat's little theorem. Other novel ideas discussed were more
esoteric. Employing the negative powers of co-prime polynomials (don't ask)
may speed things up. And Dr Agrawal is interested in using similar
techniques to investigate the long-standing problem of taking square roots
in finite fields (again, don't ask).

There is still some way to go before any of this work actually threatens
cryptography. That is because quick and dirty techniques for testing
primality already exist. Unlike Dr Agrawal's method, and its slower
predecessors, these sometimes make mistakes, falsely attesting that a
number is prime. But because such mistakes are rare, they are tolerable.
However, if Dr Agrawal's primality test can be extended to factoring
numbers, it would mean a rejigging of modern cryptography. Then the spooks
and bankers really would be worried.

Websense wants to ban online gaming
By John Leyden
Posted: 28/03/2003 at 15:40 GMT
Uncontrolled online gaming is putting organisations at risk from legal
problems from illicit software and robbing corporates of valuable bandwidth.

That's the view of employee management software outfit Websense whose
latest software, naturally enough, helps companies manage the issue (read:
ban online gaming).

Websense is looking to expand its role beyond managing Web browsing towards
allowing companies to control a far wider range of computing habits.

The list of activities Websense would like to ban grows daily.

If Websense has its way, online gaming will join the list of proscribed
workplace Internet activities, including swapping files, instant messaging
and accessing personal storage sites as unacceptable security and liability
risks. Many of these have been the subject of recent Websense surveys and,
in fairness, the company has some valid points about legal liabilities,
bandwidth management and security risks inherent in some of these activities.

But part of the rationale for controlling these activities, as expounded by
Websense, is that they affect worker productivity. We don't buy this argument.

Rather than trying to control worker behaviour we think it makes more sense
to take a look at how productive people actually are and empower them to
get the work done as they see fit.

There's another problem with Websense's approach in regard to network
gaming. Are the BOFHs of this world really going to allow software that
prohibits them from playing Quake installed on their networks?

We rather think not. ®

The resignation of Richard Perle as head of the Defense
Policy Board is a major blow for the Chickenhawks,
and their Clash of Civilizations war,
which must be exploited to the fullest, to STOP THIS WAR!
Review for a minute the significance of Perle's role.
http://www.rumormillnews.com/cgi-bin/forum.cgi
Perle's career started back in the 1970s,
when he was a staffer on Sen. Henry Jackson's
Permanent Investigations Subcommittee,
and began promoting Bernard Lewis
and his Clash of Civilizations.
Already at that time, he had a reputation as a conduit of
information to the Israelis, and a 1970 FBI wiretap overheard
Perle discussing classified information with someone at the
Israeli Embassy. He went on from there to be Assistant Secretary
of Defense in the Reagan Administration, where he came close to
being prosecuted for the passing of classified documents to the Israelis.
Perle was a prime suspect for being part of the X
Committee which collaborated with Jonathan Pollard, and he
continued to play a role for the Jabotinskyites after leaving
government, including being part of the producers of the Clean
Break document in 1996.
As head of Rumsfeld's Defense Policy Board,
he played a major role in bashing the resistance to the
war in the uniformed military, and brought in that incompetent
Laurent Murawiec, to push the Clean Break line.
Looked at in the historical perspective of the fight in the
early 1930s, Perle, among others, has been acting like the inner
circles around Adolf Hitler, which sat around planning the
assassination of top German military officers who opposed, or
might oppose, Hitler's insane wars of aggression.
Perle, Rumsfeld's leading advisor, was reported, back on August 1, 2002,
to have chaired a July 10 Defense Policy Board meeting where the
members ranted about the uniformed military opposition to the
war, and insisted that heads would have to roll among the
military brass, to break that resistance.
Well, now Perle's head has rolled instead.

But, look for the Chickenhawks to make new insane moves.
They are going ape-shit, and will begin to lash out at the
military who are in increasingly open revolt against Rumsfeld.
WASHINGTON, DC, March 27 (EIRNS) -- PERLE IS THINKING ABOUT
QUITTING THE DEFENSE POLICY BOARD, ANNOUNCED REPORTER SY HERSH
THURSDAY AFTERNOON, at a Middle East forum opposing the Iraq war
at Georgetown University.
Hours later it was officially announced,
Perle had resigned as chairman of the Defense Policy Board
-- and Rumsfeld accepted the resignation,
but asked him to stay on as a member.
On March 17, Hersh's article ``Lunch with the Chairman,''
revealed the first piece of a corruption scandal about Perle's
creation of ``Trireme,'' a company that profits off of wars, and
security threats, especially following the 9/11 attacks.
On March 21, the cover story of {EIR} exposing both Perle,
and his godfather, Dick Cheney, called for Perle to be ousted --
as well as Cheney.
In the last two weeks, other pieces of the file on
Perle's alleged profiteering began to spill out in a tidal wave
of investigation reports: a $725,000 payment from Global Crossing
telecommunications giant; a private briefing to Goldman Sachs
about the wars in Iraq AND North Korea, the defense contracts of
a British firm, Autonomy.
[source: AFP 27 March 2003]

PERLE RESIGNS... NEXT COME THE SWINE. Richard Perle, the
Utopian maniac who was chairman of the Defense Policy Board,
resigned his position today, March 27.
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has issued a brief
statement making no mention of why Perle resigned.
He wrote, He has been an excellent chairman
and has led the Defense Policy Board
during an importnt time in our history. I should add that
I have known Richard Perle for many years and know him to be a
man of integrity and honor.
[Source: The New York Times, March 27]

RICHARD PERLE'S JOB. Perle protests, in a letter to the
editor of The New York Times appearing today, headlined, Richard
Perle's Job:
You write (editorial March 24) that I have `signed on to
represent a major telecommunications company that has a strong
financial interest in lobbying the Defense Department' and that
Global Crossing has retained me `to help persuade the Defense
Department to drop its objections to a proposed sale to foreign buyers.'
I have not been retained by Global Crossing to help
persuade the Defense Department to drop its objections to a proposed sale.
I was asked by Global Crossing to help the company
understand the government's security concerns and to advise it
how best to satisfy those concerns.
The burden of my advice to Global Crossing has been to urge
it to meet the government's concerns and to help it structure safeguards to
do that.

At no time have I urged the Defense Department to drop its
objections to a proposed sale. Richard Perle, Washington, March 24, 2003.

I Want My TIA

Total Information Awareness will consign Google to the Stone Age.

By Howard Bloom

  VIEW
  I Want My TIA
How is the glut of communications devices affecting communication?
The Fight to Control Your Mind
  The Secret War Machine
  Profits of Doom
Scott Menchin
By now, you've heard all about Total Information Awareness, the Darpa
program designed to jump-start new methods of knowledge gathering,
integration, and prediction. It's one of our high tech answers to the
terrorist menace of bin Laden and his many Osama wannabes. But if you know
the simple facts about Total Information Awareness, you've also heard that
the system itself is the real enemy.TIA is at the center of a media storm
that started last summer, when the Electronic Frontier Foundation's online
newsletter headlined an alert about the program: how to build a police
state. The EFF analysis became the standard line, and by November, even
The New York Times had agreed that it was a vast electronic dragnet. In
February, Congress put the Pentagon on notice that it would not tolerate
the surveillance of US citizens. Last I checked, there were 28,000 Web
sites opining on TIA. The vibe? Overwhelmingly negative.

Frankly, the critics are missing the point.

TIA promises search engines that will consign Google to the Stone Age.
TIA's dialog technology will listen to your words, then link you to a trove
of data that makes today's Web look like the library of an illiterate.

Can't think of the perfect search term to dig up what you want? No problem.
One of TIA's component programs, Genisys, aims to totally reinvent the
database, increasing its usefulness and its contents by an order of
magnitude. It will be the database of databases, with an add-on Babblefish
able to parse and cross-reference every possible information stream. The
most ambitious TIA initiative, Genoa II, is working to produce cognitive
amplifiers - a symbiotic thinking system that weaves together human and
machine intelligences more tightly than ever before.

Have an important meeting coming up and don't know the first thing about
the topic? Did you meet someone on an airplane last year named Jim or John,
and then lose his business card?

Well, on your commute, flip the switch to your TIA-developed Communicator
platform and initiate a search. It's being designed to knit together all
kinds of disparate data: travel documents, phone records, credit card and
banking statements, even server logs.

Tracking terrorists is just a pretext for getting the best computer
scientists at Darpa to create what we all really want: a general-purpose IQ
expansion pack capable of plowing through the built-in barriers of central
nervous system-based software. It will show us whole new ways to look at
what we're up against - whether it's bin Laden, a demanding boss, or that
damn lost phone number.

For a paltry $200 million a year - the cost of a B-1 bomber - we finally
get a national technology initiative worth pursuing. And if it accomplishes
only a fraction of its goals, so what? Even that will dramatically expand
the powers of our forgetful brains.

Of course, I'm assuming that the government will let us have the
technology. And I'm right - it will. History proves that nearly every
American military invention smaller than a house eventually made its way to
the general public. From 1795 to 1851, the government's Springfield Armory
first perfected mass production. The Great War gave us commercial aviation,
World War II the computers and the tubes that power our microwave ovens.
And the Cold War produced NASA, GPS locators, and, oh yeah, the Internet.

Total Information Awareness is in the hands of one of the few government
bureaus a technophile can love - Darpa. The agency has long been a Santa
Claus for civilian tech junkies. It's given us the very large-scale
integrated circuit, packet-switching, X-ray lithography, advanced
semiconductors, hybrid cars, supercapacitors, advanced fuel cells,
telesurgery, and a bonanza of other technodelights.

Public scrutiny of ominous-sounding government plans is a good thing. If
people are being abused by Big Brother, it's vital to drag the atrocities
out of hiding and stop them. The misuse of technology is a social evil, and
it's essential to fight against this sort of crime. But let's remember that
the evil resides in the crime, not in the technology.

Frankly, I want my TIA. And if given the choice, I'd have it today.

And when he goes to Heaven

Another Marine reporting, Sir
I’ve served my time in Hell
~ Anonymous Marine, WWII

The late Eugene Sledge concluded an article (p. 307) in
The Costs
of War, edited by John
Denson, with that poem from an anonymous Marine. In his
article, which was composed from notes he used in a speech to a
Costs of War conference sponsored by the Ludwig von Mises
Institute in May, 1994, Sledge described vividly the horrors of World War
II as faced by those who had to fight in ground combat – those who faced
death because of decisions made by politicians.
Today, politicians ignore experiences cited by Eugene Sledge and others,
and President George Bush is no exception. As a result, he and his
neo-con handlers may be heading towards their own – and the U.S.’s –
Waterloo in the current war on Iraq. By allowing himself to be
bamboozled by these neo-con bozos into believing that the U.S. could
defeat Iraq quite easily, Bush launched the war with inadequate troop
strength and insufficient heavy weapons, notably tanks and other armored
fighting vehicles and heavier mechanized infantry divisions.
Press reports indicate that another 100,000 – 120,000 U.S. troops will be
sent to fight in Iraq (including an armored division), almost 50% more
than the 275,000 American and British troops now in that area and more
than double the number of U.S. ground combat troops – estimated at about
75,000 – now fighting in Iraq. Because it will take a number of weeks –
up to several months – to deploy these additional forces, the war, in
this active combat phase, will drag on. And it will likely cost more than
the $75 billion Bush is seeking to fund it and the extra foreign aid to
our various allies. If Iraqi guerrilla fighters, reportedly
including an influx of new al Qaeda recruits, get military aid from
Russia, China and other countries and start a campaign of terror against
U.S. troops, things could go downhill after any initial U.S. victory.

Shock and Awe – A Mendacious Strategy of Selling War on the
Cheap
The neo-con campaign of Shock and Awe – so-called
precision bombing of key Iraqi military command and control targets
coupled with rapid troop movements designed to accept the surrender of
Iraqi troops who would be shocked and awed by our firepower display –
flopped. Iraqis have not surrendered en masse. In fact, surprise of
surprises, some Iraqis may even view their fighting as a defense of their
homeland. One wonders what kind of intelligence reports suggested that
the Iraqis would just surrender quickly, or did the neo-cons ignore and
cover up such reports in order to get us to attack Iraq? This is
certainly not a war on the cheap, as was promoted by Bush’s neo-con
mafia.
Press reports further confirm this. With a combination of his usual
trickery, possibly terrorizing his own populace into fighting, and
old-fashioned guerrilla warfare, Saddam and his armies appear to be
holding out, sometimes giving ground grudgingly in their fight. The
Iraqis have been helped by severe sandstorms, which forced the U.S. to
ground its aircraft and helicopters. And Saddam’s military appears to be
using what weapons they have – including tanks – to disrupt U.S. supply
lines and attack U.S. combat forces, which are stretched thin. In a
battle just several days ago, Iraqis reportedly knocked out two U.S. M-1
Abrams tanks using anti-tank missiles.
Because of Bush’s and his neo-fascist advisers’ arrogance and mendacity –
wanting to get a U.S. base in Iraq to control Middle Eastern oil and
possibly to protect Israel, many U.S. and British servicemen and women
are going to get killed and wounded in this horrible and unnecessary war
and likely subsequent military occupation. Costs of this war will likely
rise well above current estimates, which appear to be of the lowball
variety. Lawrence Lindsey, a former economic adviser to George Bush, got
into hot water – before being fired – by citing an estimate of $200
billion for the cost of invading and occupying Iraq. Lindsey may well
prove to be correct. And the toll on Iraqi civilians – in terms of lives
lost, injuries, and collateral damage to their property, will increase
further as the fighting drags on and possibly gets more intense.
Just as sickening is the fact that no senior U.S. military commanders
fell on their swords by resigning and speaking out that our
force was inadequate prior to the U.S. attack. Even if only one Major or
Lieutenant General had done so, that might have raised enough questions
to prevent the attack from taking place. Apparently, our senior military
– even if they disagreed with Donald Rumsfeld and the other neo-cons –
believed they could eventually win the war but with more casualties. And
they probably believe that this war will boost support for even more
defense spending!
Inadequate Ground Forces, Lack of Land, and Bad Weather
Prior to the U.S. attack on Iraq, some senior military officers
argued with Defense Secretary Donald

Military, CIA try to kill leaders
U.S. COMMANDOS ACTIVE IN IRAQ
By Dana Priest
Washington Post

WASHINGTON - U.S. covert teams have been operating in urban areas
in Iraq trying to kill members of President Saddam Hussein's inner
circle, including Baath Party officials and Special Republican Guard
commanders, according to U.S. and other knowledgeable officials.
The covert teams, from the CIA's paramilitary division and the military's
special-operations group, include snipers and demolition experts schooled
in setting house and car bombs. They reportedly have killed more than a
handful of individuals, according to one knowledgeable source. They have
been in operation for at least a week.
The previously undisclosed operation suggests U.S. government efforts to
destroy the government leadership are far more extensive than previously
known and have continued since the March 20 airstrike on a residential
compound in the suburbs of Baghdad. That attack was launched after CIA
Director George Tenet presented President Bush with fresh intelligence
that Saddam and his two sons, Qusay and Uday, were sleeping at the
complex.
CIA officials declined to comment. Pentagon news officer Torie Clarke
said, ``As we have said before, we have special forces in the north, west
and south of the country.''
As conventional U.S. and British forces have encountered
fiercer-than-expected Iraqi resistance, the CIA and the Pentagon's covert
units are under increasing pressure to fire the ``silver bullet'' that
will kill Saddam and bring down his government. The agencies have stepped
up a fierce psychological-operations campaign to rattle key members of
Saddam's government to get them to turn on the Iraqi leader.
CIA units and special-operations teams also are involved in organizing
tribal groups to fight the Iraqi government from the north. They are
secretly hunting for weapons of mass destruction and missile sites and
are looking to interrogate Iraqi defectors and prisoners of war. The CIA,
National Security Agency and foreign intelligence services cooperating
with the agency are helping to identify so-called ``leadership'' targets:
the homes, offices and other sites inhabited by the officials who make up
the government's infrastructure.
Provided with a detailed account of the contents of this article, U.S.
government officials made no request to the Washington Post to withhold
any of the story's details from publication, as they have sometimes done
in other cases involving ongoing covert operations.
Many of the missions performed by the CIA in Iraq integrate intelligence
into battlefield operation -- through high-speed wireless data
transmission. The covert killing teams are an example of what one source
called the ``real-life stuff.''
Not all the explosions in Baghdad captured by Western television cameras
are the result of aerial bombs and missiles, the source said, implying
that some had been planted by the teams.
For decades, since the assassination scandals and consequent legal
restraints of the 1970s, neither the CIA nor the military undertook such
targeting of individuals.
But after the Sept. 11 terrorists attacks on the World Trade Center and
Pentagon, the CIA in particular has been given the go-ahead to undertake
much more risky and sensitive operations that do just that. The agency
maintains a list of about 30 terrorists, the so-called ``high-value
targets,'' and has assigned paramilitary teams to track down, capture or
kill these individuals, most of whom are members of the Al-Qaida
terrorist organization.
The CIA and the military derive their legal authority to carry out such
operations from two classified legal memorandums, one written for
President Clinton in 1998 and one written by Bush administration lawyers
after the Sept. 11 attacks.

Ceasehack!

2003-03-29 Thread professor rat
LONDON -- Pro-and-anti Iraq war protesters have been making their point by
hacking into Web sites in a display of cyber activism, rather than with the
traditional can of spray paint or placard.

Countless activists -- protesters or war hawks -- have the ability to
hijack or cripple Web sites from the opposing camp, leaving in their wake a
graveyard of busted and defaced links.

War Hack Attacks Tit For Tat
This is the future of protest, said Roberto Preatoni, founder of Zone-H,
an Estonian firm that monitors and records hacking attacks. Since the war
in Iraq started last week, the firm has recorded over 20,000 website
defacements.

The most notable victim was al-Jazeera, the Qatar-based satellite TV
network that angered many Western viewers earlier this week when it aired
footage of dead British and American soldiers and of prisoners of war.

The Arabic-language site, www.aljazeera.net, flickered to life on Friday,
but access to the English-language version remained impossible, the result
of repeated hack attacks since Monday.

On Thursday, visitors to the English site were greeted with a
stars-and-stripes logo saying Let Freedom Ring. Earlier, Hacked by
Patriot, Freedom Cyber Force Militia, was scrawled on the site beneath a
logo containing the U.S. flag.

A representative for the FBI said the agency was investigating the
al-Jazeera website hack.

Al-Jazeera was not alone. Sites on both sides of the war have been
targeted, as have sites with no obvious affiliation to the war effort.

Last week, when bombs first began to drop on Baghdad, hundreds of U.S. and
British business, government and municipal Web sites were defaced with
anti-war messages, security experts reported. Seemingly within hours, more
hawkish hackers went on the offensive against Arab sites.

Identifying themselves with such nicknames as Hackweiser and DkD, hackers
and hacker groups are hard to track down.

While Faisal Bodi, senior editor for Aljazeera.net, pointed a finger at the
Bush administration, security experts dismiss the existence of
state-sponsored hacking initiatives.

Instead they say they are usually the work of private groups or individuals
with a particular viewpoint to communicate -- or with the aim of gagging
their opponent. The recent tit-for-tat attacks prompted calls from free
speech activists -- and even some hackers -- for a cease-fire.

In a protest or activist scenario, one would hope that one's cause and
message were strong enough that 'shouting down' the opposing viewpoint is
considered unnecessary, said Mark Loveless, a hacker who works for U.S.
security software company BindView Corp. and is known online as Simple Nomad.

People wouldn't tolerate groups that burn down book shops or news agents
that sell publications they don't agree with. They shouldn't tolerate the
online equivalent, said Ian Brown, director of the Foundation for
Information Policy Research, a British free speech think tank.

But others are convinced the worst is yet to come. If you take down

Cryptology (in the service of the state) is about nothing but war, treason, vainglorious politics, lies, deceipt, slaughter, patriotism, profits,...

...more vainglory, broken promises, guile, pretended violated innocence,
genius technology, you name it, mostly the worst and occasionally the
best of two-faced humankind.
Cryptome paid a highly informative visit yesterday to
NSA's National Cryptologic Museum.
The museum and library demonstrate that cryptology is about nothing but
war, treason, vainglorious politics, lies, deceipt, slaughter,
patriotism, profits, more vainglory, broken promises, guile, pretended
violated innocence, genius technology, you name it, mostly the worst and
occasionally the best of two-faced humankind.
Anyone demonically gaga about war, disinformation and cryptology should
spend a lot of time at this tiny, unique facility, as does David Kahn,
author of Codebreakers. (Kahn is soon to publish a book on US
comsec legend Herbert Yardley based on material at the library.).

Got yer mind right Luke?

The e-nigma of Sydney

The man ... and the motion picture that simply do not conform went the
tagline of Cool Hand Luke. The classic 1967 film stars Paul Newman as Lucas
Cool Hand Jackson, a charismatic and recalcitrant prisoner on chain gang
duty. You're gonna get used to them chains after a while, Luke, drawls a
sadistic guard before beating him to the ground. Despite physical and
mental cruelty, Luke refuses to be broken.

Thirty-five years later, the film is an inspiration to a young Sydney man
who calls himself Lucas Jackson and has created the Broken Man website.

Though the names come from the film, the purpose of the low-tech, two-page
site is more obscure. The home page features a few photos, a button, an
email contact and some optimistic text: Can you picture a terrorist-free
world? A drug-free environment? People valuing freedom of speech? Peace in
a war-free earth? Then 'SOMETHING UNBELIEVABLE' is exactly what you need.
COMING SOON.

After Broken Man went live last December, Jackson began using some
interesting publicity techniques. Fake crime scenes appeared around the
CBD, with a chalked body outline and the web address brokenman.net marked
off with US police tape. These crime scenes also contained clues.

Since then, Jackson has left more clues by various means including
distributing 1000 wallets around the city and creating a secret phone line.
He has also kept up a vigorous chalking campaign, scrawling his website
address from Bondi to Sydney's inner west.
In person, Jackson looks like an ordinary guy in his early 20s (at a guess
- he refuses to be more specific about his age than twentysomething).
Wearing jeans, T-shirt and wraparound reflector sunnies, he's friendly,
with no obvious nervous tics or oddities. And young men obsessed with cult
movies are hardly unusual. The difference is Jackson has decided to make a
statement in the public domain, though it's not yet clear what his message is.

When questioned about his motives, Jackson is vague. A whole bunch of
situations led him to take action, he says. A previous Herald news story
implied he was an anti-war protester, but he denies it, and didn't join the
crowds at Hyde Park on February 16. I kept away from the peace march. I've
got my own opinion of the war against terrorism.

The fake crime scenes, he says, were symbolic of everyday things we don't
see ... that are kind of hidden agendas by governments and different bodies.

He doesn't deny being a conspiracy theorist. I believe everyone's got
hidden agendas; they're everywhere.

He's not marketing a product or hawking religion, though he feels people
are reaching out for something to believe in. I'm not telling anyone to
believe in anything but themselves.

As for where the clues are leading, Jackson says the final piece in the
puzzle is not far away and that it will outcome in quite a large way and
in a positive way.

Jackson is the sole instigator of this enigmatic project. The only help
he's had is from a friend who dealt with the technicalities of building
the website. Jackson is no computer genius or high-tech hacker, claiming he
only uses the web to play a bit of pool now and then.

His Broken Man website is simply the means to find a large and diverse
audience. I'm reaching out to rich people, poor people, students, the
homeless. Jackson claims to have registered up to 30,000 hits on one day,
though he says the average is closer to 7000. He also says he's received
countless emails and phone messages and expects about 100,000 people to
participate in the final puzzle which will be quite testing.

Jackson has a day job, though predictably he won't reveal what it is. The
web is an affordable way to broadcast his message to the world. It's very
cost effective, doing it by myself, he says. It's really just energy I'm
burning and not money.

Working towards a terrorist-free, drug-free, war-free world must burn a lot
of energy. Realistically, can one person with a low-tech website, some
chalk and an active imagination deliver something unbelievable? Jackson
says he's totally confident. When pressed about what he hopes to achieve
with Broken Man, he responds: Hopefully it changes some opinions and opens
some minds. Hopefully it changes some lives.

Right, but in what way? There's a long pause before he answers with a smile.

In a positive way.

In a famous scene in Cool Hand Luke, the lead character takes on a bet to
eat 50 hard-boiled eggs in an hour. The plausibility of this feat has since
been scientifically analysed - see BBC's Hollywood Science.

Scientologists caught Lying...when are they going to be caught DYING?

2003-03-29 Thread professor rat
The Advertising Standards Authority has upheld a complaint against the
Church of Scientology, which stated in a poster that it had rescued 250,000
people from drug addiction.
The council said that the worldwide religious movement had not proved its
claim that as many as a quarter of a million addicts had stopped using
drugs as a direct result of Scientology's intervention.
The Church of England's Birmingham diocese and several members of the
public had objected to the poster, which was produced by the Scientologists
to publicise a tour of parts of the country.
The poster read: Scientology: applied religious philosophy. 250,000 people
salvaged from drugs. There was also a free telephone number and a website
address.
The council said it accepted that many people had stopped taking drugs with
the help of Scientology, but the movement had not proved that they had all
been addicts.
