Microsoft announced Monday of new bugs in the Windows operating system that could very well welcome new birth of viruses. Except for saying that the vulnerabilaties are very similar to those exploited by the MSBlaster worm, not further details were released.

"This is essentially the same type of vulnerability," said Alfred Huger, senior director of engineering at Symantec Security Response. "We're likely to see them (new viruses) in the near future."

Code that exploits the vulnerability is already being exchanged between researchers, he said. A new virus could come out in the next few days, he added, if not sooner.
The flaw is present in Windows XP, Windows 2002, and Windows NT. Norton Antivirus, an industry-known anti-virus application, appeared to be the only virus-protection currently preventing exploitation of this new virus set to attack anytime.

Meanwhile, researchers have put forth a new plea to all Internet users to buy or upgrade their antivirus software, especially if they have been past victims of viruses, including the SoBig which clogged up 100s of millions of e-mail boxes.

"At this point, we continue to urge all internet users, to install an antivirus solution that is known to protect them from such future attacks" said Jim Hendrick of VirusPLUS++, a not-for-profit consumer organization which aims towards relaying relavant and important information to net users regarding new viruses.
