[czernowitz-l] Austrian citizenship

2022-01-16 Thread RUTH GOLD
Dear all,

I am very upset and angry because the Austrian authorities denied my request
for citizenship, claiming that there is no proof that my parent were Austrian
citizens.
Like they don’t know that the Romanians confiscated all our documents when they
deported us to Transnistria.

This is the epitome of injustice to a Holocaust survivor, specially to an
orphan.

Any suggestions?

With my very best regards,

Ruth

[czernowitz-l] Info on Morgenstern & Rutenberg families

2022-01-16 Thread Margo J. Hittleman
Hello everyone,

I have been “lurking” on this list for a while. I love the help people have
offered each other.

I’m wondering about any suggestions so I can learn more about my
great-great-grandparents, Israel Morgenstern and his wife, Chaie Rutenberg
(various spellings), during their lives in or near Chernowitz from the early
1850s (when they were born) to 1890 (when they emigrated to the U.S.) .

Various documents list Israel’s birthplace as Chernowitz, Horseny and Sadagora.
Chaie’s birthplace was Toprovitz.

They had 7 children -- Aron, Blume, Selig, Pesach, Moses, Riwke, and Rosa --
born in Sadagora (I think), between 1871 and 1889.

I’m told they had a whiskey distillery (in Sadagora or Chernowitz) that was
destroyed in a fire around 1890.

They emigrated to the U.S. after that, and then emigrated again to Jerusalem,
Palestine in 1989.

Israel Morgenstern died in Jerusalem around 1936, and he and his wife are both
buried there, although I have no idea how to find documents related to that.

I do have their immigration documents to the U.S. and a set of documents from
the U.S. Consulate in Jerusalem. But I would love to find documents from
Bukovina.

Any suggestions?

Best, Margo Hittleman

[czernowitz-l] Stamps

2022-01-16 Thread Irv Osterer
Thanks so much for posting the link to the Bukowina stamps. I've been chasing a
STANESTI DE JOS postmark for many years. My grandfather was born there. There
was a STANESTI postmark on this list — is it from STANESTI DE JOS? I know there
are other places with this name.

[czernowitz-l] print of Austro-Hungarian regional coats of arms

2022-01-16 Thread Jim Wald
Hi, all.

Jerome was recently kind enough to add to the little library of stamps
and other images (http://czernowitz.ehpes.com/stamps/index.html#: last
image in the collection) a photo of a print I have:  the coats of arms
of the various regions of the Austro-Hungarian Empire: including, of
course, Bukovina and Galicia.

It is just a little illustration included in the supplement to the
famous household reference work, Meyer's Konversations-Lexikon, from
1898, but I find it quite appealing. In case anyone would like a better
copy, I have a higher-resolution scan (about 12 MB) as well as scans of
two pages of descriptive text and would be happy to share them.

Best,
Jim
