Re: [darktable-dev] Some news 4.2 & 4.4

2023-01-06 Thread Matthias Elsdörfer

Happy new year to you, Pascal, the dev team and the community!

Great news, thanks for the awesome work. I look forward to the 4.2.1
release. I noticed no bugs except crashes when scrolling around while DT
was processing many thumbs for a large number of images at once on the
lighttable. Worked around it by being a bit more patient. :-)

Hello,

First of all I wish all of you an happy new year!

This is a small message about 4.2. I'm currently only merging safe PR
into master and the 4.2 branch which will become 4.2.1 corrective
release. The 4.2 release had very few defects and none very
urgent/important. We will probably be able to release 4.2.1 around mid-
February.

I'll start merging things for 4.4 starting mid-January in master.

Have a nice day,

2022-12-15 Thread Matthias Elsdörfer

Hello, Pascal and Darktable team,

I'm gonna be honest, Darktable is one of the best pieces of software
I've discovered in my life, right up there with RetroArch (I know, whole
different ball game, but still).

I think I've been using DT for almost 10 years now and it never ceases
to amaze me how you not only keep it maintained, but always evolving.

Absolutely fantastic work all around. I'm deeply grateful and wish you
(us all) long and sustained success with Darktable.

Sorry to hear there has been conflict among the dev team, it completely
went past me and I hope you've recovered and are able to move on from it
well.

Kind regards from Germany,
Matt.

Hello!

I'd like to take some time, while we are all waiting for the 4.2
release, to send you a little message about darktable.

This release cycle has seen lot of improvements as previous releases.
We had also some divergences with one developer and the signal sent was
certainly not good or worrisome for some of you.

Fact is that the team behind darktable is strong and working very hard
in many aspects of the project.

Some people gain more visibility because they work on GUI part that are
directly visible by end-users. But there is also some people working on
part of the code that you do not see directly but that makes darktable
internal better.

I'd like to thank Hanno Schwalm and Ralf Brown for their work on
performances, tweaking OpenCL code path and OpenMP to use every cycles
of your CPU.

I'd like to thank Hanno Schwalm also for working on new highlight
recovery algorithms.

I'd like to thank Diederik ter Rahe for looking into Gtk issues and
proposing a very impressive framework for shortcuts. And to achieve
that, lot of code refactoring has been done. Some Gtk parts are looking
like black magic to me :)

I'd like to thank Roman Lebedev for the hard work in rawspeed. Without
this project darktable won't be there. Also Miloš Komarčević working on
rawspeed and many RAW formats support.

I'd like to thank Victor Forsiuk for working on image input/output
support and fixing a huge number of spelling typos.

I'd like to thank Aldric Renaudin for the continued effort on the
lighttable filters and UI.

I'd like to thank Nicolas Auffray for taking over the UI effort and
doing magic with CSS.

I'd like to thank Bill Fergusson for maintaining the Lua framework.

I'd like to thank rawfiner for checking noise profiles and making sure
they are in good shape for integration.

I'd like to thank Simone Gotti for working on a new lens correction
method based on meta-data.

I'd like to thank all the testers and reviewers (Chris Elston, Martin
Straeten, parafin, Mark-64, and others) making sure we do not introduce
more issues than we are fixing. Also thanks for Chris for reading my
English in the RELEASE_NOTES and correcting it.

I'd like to thank parafin and Bill Fergusson for creating the release
binaries for MacOS and Windows. And Andreas Schneider as maintainer of
the OBS platform for creating the GNU/Linux binaries.

I'd like to thank Sakari Kapanen for helping with color science.

I'd like to thank Jakob Andrén for the long journey at making Sigmoid a
viable alternative to FilmicRGB.

I'd like to thank all the translators bringing to us an interface in
our native language.

I won't name them, but also remember that darktable is Open Source and
we leverage on many other Open Source projects/libraries (to handle
Jpeg, TIFF, AVIF, HEIF, PNG... tether with camera, handle SVG,
colors...). I'm even pretty sure that there is far more code in the
dependencies we are using than in darktable itself.

And finally I'd like to thank all people that I have forgotten in the
list above. I'm sorry if I missed you.

A darktable release is a huge amount of work and the darktable team is
wonderful. I'm really happy to be part of it, let's the aventure
continue.

Have all a nice end of year!

## The Big Ones

- The keyboard shortcut system has been entirely reworked and
extended to allow you
to control darktable with other devices, for example, MIDI devices
and game controllers. Standard keyboard/mouse shortcuts can now
make use
of mouse movements (horizontal, vertical, diagonal) as well as
multiple
button/key presses and short or long presses/clicks.

Please note that any shortcuts you have previously created are
not transferred
to the new functionality and will need to be redefined in
darktable 3.8.

- New diffuse or sharpen module, allowing you to simulate or to revert
diffusion processes to reconstruct images from lens blur, hazing,
sensor low-pass filter, or noise. It can also be used to simulate
watercolor smudges, increase local contrast, simulate blooming or
apply surface blur. Special rules can be defined to specifically
diffuse across or along edges, as well as to avoid sharpening or
  blurring them.

- New scene-referred blurs module, to synthesize motion and lens
blurs in a parametric
and physically-accurate way. This module allows you to define
the motion path or the lens
diaphragm and then generates the corresponding blur.

- Perspective correction module has been renamed to rotate and
perspective
and now allows you to manually define correction settings by
drawing lines
or rectangles on the image (replicating keystone correction
functionality
from the deprecated crop and rotate module)

- Added support for multiple images in the print view. The page can be
filled with multiple areas, each of which can be moved around
and placed on
the page with the ability to snap to a grid for precision.

- A new LMMSE demosaic algorithm has been introduced. This
algorithm is particularly
suited to high ISO and/or noisy images.

- The composition guides from the crop module are now available
globally and no
longer require the crop module to be activated.

- The Canon raw CR3 format is now supported (see list of supported
cameras in the
section below). This support is provided by LibRaw and requires
at least exiv2 version
  0.27.4 with BMFF support activated.

- The color checker profiling tool, introduced in darktable 3.4 as
part of the
  color calibration module, is n

Thanks, Jan! Yeah, technically, what I did was: I copied the pictures
from my SD card to my /home/Test/ folder, like I always do. Then, I
used "import and copy" in DT and pointed to that folder.

What I didn't realize that 3.6 now actually makes new copies somewhere
else on the file system. That's why I was so surprised later to find
all 73 CR2s still there in /home/Test, and no XMP files at all.

What I'm wondering is, where on my file system is the directory that
DT copied my files to and placed my XMPs in?

## The Big Ones

- Full rework of the import module. The new module allows you to see
thumbnails of your images before import and makes it easier to handle
multiple import tasks. The same dialog is now used for importing
   from disk, card or camera.

When importing "in-place", images that are already present in
darktable
are flagged and can be automatically excluded from the import.

Importing from a local drive won't use gphoto and so should work more
   reliably on Windows.

- A vector-scope is added to complement the current histogram,
   waveform and parade views.

- A new default demosaic algorithm (RCD) has been introduced, which
should provide
better quality than the current default (PPG) without the long run-
times
of AMaZE. the order of the demosaic algorithms has also been adjusted
for clarity.

- Support for "dual demosaic" has also been added, allowing you to
combine
"RCD + VNG4" and "AMaZE + VNG4" for bayer sensors, for xtrans sensors
there is
"Markesteijn 3-pass + VNG". This allows you to use an algorithm
better resolving
fine detail and another one delivering smoother output depending on
local image content.

- You can now create an opacity mask based on the sharpness of the
image. This uses
a similar algorithm to that used in dual demosaic.

- Drawn shapes are drawn on the original RAW image and then distorted
through
the pixelpipe. This previously led to, for example, circles becoming
ellipses
(due to lens distortion) after being placed on the i

worked through a whole photo session on Monday on my laptop, deleting
over 40 pictures and retouching the remaining 30. Then, I moved the
whole folder over to my desktop PC.

When I opened it on my desktop today, I found that the 40 pictures I
deleted were back and all my editing work was gone.

Why? Where did it go? Do my files get copied somewhere when I import
them? What's wrong with keeping them where I put them in the first place?

I hope you can help me make sense of this and, perhaps, recover my 2
hours of work. I'm hoping it's still somewhere on my laptop.

Thanks,
Matt.

This previously led to, for example, circles becoming
ellipses
(due to lens distortion) after being placed on the image. All drawn
shapes can
now be pre-visualized and moved prior to placement, with full
deformation
applied. This makes the editing of masks easier fully WYSIWYG.

- A new Color Balance RGB module has been added. This can be used as a
one stop module
   for all color grading work.

- A new censorize module has been added. This allows you to hide parts
of the image by adding
   a blur/pixelization.

- A new crop module has been added. This new module has been added late
in the
pixelpipe and makes it possible to use cropped parts of the image for
source spots
in the retouch module, for example.

- A new section has been added to the color calibration module to allow
you to calibrate
colors using a color checker chart.

- The map module has been enha

Re: [darktable-dev] Problems with Crop and Rotate module

2020-09-10 Thread Matthias Elsdörfer

You could. Personally, I'd just reconfigure the program. Probably
something went sideways/buggy in your old config file at some point, and
it'll be fine if you set it up again with the new config file.

[darktable-dev] Flatpak: OpenCL only works when DT repo version is also installed (Linux Manjaro)

2020-05-08 Thread Matthias Elsdörfer

Hello, Darktable dev team!

I'm new to this mailing list and I'm not really sure I'm doing this
right, but I hope this message reaches the right guys. :-)

I found a bug in the Flatpak version of Darktable.

*Steps to Reproduce:
*

1. Boot up PC on Linux Manjaro 20 running
   /nvidia-hybrid-intel-nvidia-440xx-prime/ driver
2. Install /opencl-nvidia-440xx, ocl-icd and opencl-headers/ using pamac
3. Install Darktable 3.0.2 flatpak using pamac > reboot
4. Execute command /prime-run flatpak run org.darktable.Darktable -d
   opencl/
5. Observe OpenCL support doesn't work
6. Install Darktable 3.0.2 from community repo using pamac > reboot
7. Execute command from step 4
8. Execute command /darktable -d opencl
   /
9. Observe OpenCL support works in both versions of Darktable now/
   /

*Current Behaviour:*

OpenCL support doesn't work in Darktable 3.0.2 flatpak unless the
community repo version of Darktable is also installed.
**

*Expected Behaviour:*

OpenCL support should work in Flatpak version of Darkable 3.0.2 with
necessary Nvidia drivers installed.

*Notes:*

 * OpenCL support continues to work in the community repo version after
   uninstalling the Darktable flatpak.

*Attachments:*

 * Command line output from repro step 4.
 * My PC's specs.

Let me know if you need any further information about this issue.

Thanks, and best regards,
Matthias.
