Do you want to start fresh? Then you should exit darktable and delete
everything in that folder. When you start it again darktable will re-create
empty versions of what it needs.

This will delete the images database, the tags database, and all styles and
configurations you could have.

Re: [darktable-user] Tags - Question on the Organisation

2020-07-09 Thread Guillermo Rozas
Hi,
it will work, but I have some comments:

had the option to write to XMP disabled all the time, it would have written
data in the XMP files (both for edit info and for metadata). Depending on
what digiKam did to that data, it could still be there or not.

and databases. I don't know where they are located in macOS, but it's the
folder that has the darctablerc, libradry.db and data.db files. Conversely,
if you uninstall the program and don't delete this folder, it will just
pick up where it left when you install it again.

to write the metadata. It could happen that some metadata is left from a
previous darktable interaction that was not overwritten by digiKam, and
this could create a conflict. But if an image was not touched by darktable
before, it will just pick up all the tags assigned by digiKam without
problems.

Chances of conflict are pretty small because darktable writes tags only to
standard locations and digiKam also reads and writes to them. My main
concern would be that tags in the XMP file can be written to both
dc:subject (single tags) and lr:hierarchicalSubject (tag tree), but both
programs have a different convention on assigning to an image the full tag
hierarchy or only the last level. One option would be to use a text-based
search inside all your XMP files and look for any mention of "darktable" in
them (those files were imported into darktable at some point). Then, be a
bit more careful on checking everything is right with their tags on import.

You should also enable the option to look for updated XMP's on startup if
you intend to use both in parallel, so darktable can pick up new tags. This
option only works on program start, so you should never edit the XMP files
in digiKam while darktable is running, because the latter will either
overwrite them or ignore the changes.

Guillermo

[darktable-user] Tags - Question on the Organisation

2020-07-09 Thread Peter Schlaufer
Hello

I am quite new to dt after having been with Lightroom and for two years with
Luminar. My digital Pictures are about 25’000, most of them organised in LR.
Because of the two years with Luminar and other reasons I had quite a mess with
the tags. I tried to reorganise the tags with dt, which was for me cumbersome
if not impossible. I therefore made it with Digikam, which allows to do such a
task in a very structured and easy way and writes and alters the tags in the
exif data and they are written in a xmp sidecar for the RAWs.
Now my question, hence I do not have worked many files with darktable I want to
do the following (I have MacOs):

I have my files on an external SSD and there I have checked, that the xmp files
had a the date of the correction in Digikam, therefore after the edits in dt:

I do remove all these files from darktable and with this measure I think
the (few) files edited and also tagged with darktable are not in dt anymore
I do delete the program from the Computer
I do reload dt again from scratch
i do import the files again from SSD and I hope they have the
renewed Tags organised with Digikam will appear in dt after the reimport

Can anyone tell me whether this procedure will work? Thank you very much for
the help

The target storage! Obviously you don't want a website gallery.

Try 'file on disk'

Set the 'target storage' to 'file on disk', not 'website gallery'.
