That sounds more plausible than the power brick knowing about the
temperature of the computer. You can probably check if the power
rating of the brick matches the power consumption of the computer (it
came with it?)

Yes - it came with it. To make it worse - the manufacturer replaced it
and the second machine (new machine, new power brick showed the same issue)

https://www.rapidtables.com/calc/electric/Amp_to_Watt_Calculator.html

11.8 Amps at 19.5 Volts calculates to 230.1 Watts. The power supply is
230 Watts. Unless the .1 Watts is significant or there is an error of
some kind then they are extremely close.

A recent computer with a recent kernel should never get to the point
where the CPU turns off because of high temperature, it should
throttle much earlier. If that is not the case, you may check if
automatic throttling is not disabled somewhere.

It is Ubuntu 20.04 derivative - fully updated, and the bios is also
fully updated. Both CPU and GPU are not overloaded in terms - they never
lock at 99% on all cores (my old machine can run on this load for many
hours - no overheating - max goes to about 90 Celsius no power supply
disconnect). But the new machine runs often at more than 100 Celsius (as
a peak temperature). Normally it is within 85-95 under load but peaks
above 100

What are the peak temperatures of your computers when under load?

Best regards,
Guillermo

Re: [darktable-user] power adapter disconnects - high temperature

2020-08-09 Thread I. Ivanov

Thank you All!

It is really odd. It is a brand new laptop and I can reproduce the issue
consistently. But it does appear to be related to heath. The computer is
on a flat surface (table) and nothing blocking vents around. Normal
ambient temperature 26 Celsius.

I am really puzzled how the power supply knows or reacts. It is just a
power brick. So - no information flowing from the laptop to the power
supply (how hot it is - the laptop). Do you think the power supply does
not match the laptop correctly so the power drawn when all CPU, GPU and
file copy overburden it and in turns it cuts the power (because itself
it becomes too hot too)?

B

I know it is quite a stretch but have anybody heard of a
possibility of a power adapter cutting the power to the laptop on
its own?

I am observing a very strange issue on a linux laptop and I can only
simulate it for now when DT is used - using GPU - new AMD processor,
exporting thousands of images then - when the temperature rises -
start
intense disk operations (copying of files for example). Unplug the
power
adapter from the wall is needed to restore the power.

If anybody is using AMD based linux laptop - would you mind please
sending a screenshot from "Psensor" when the computer is heavily
utilized (like exporting thousands of images out of DT using GPU)? I
would really want to know the temperature scope.

The ones of main concern for me are "Tdie" "Tctl" "temp1" (the 4th
value
top to bottom on Psensor)

Have anybody seen more than 100 Celsius on the above values on any
laptop when under stress? If not - what do you observe as a normal
scope
for you when the machine is under stress?

Thank you in advance!

In that same vein, you might turn off the power to your computer, pull
off the bottom cover of the computer and use compressed air to blow out
any dust accumulation.  I'm always surprised by how much dust
accumulates in such a short period of time.

[darktable-user] power adapter disconnects - high temperature

2020-08-09 Thread I. Ivanov

Hi All,

I know it is quite a stretch but have anybody heard of a
possibility of a power adapter cutting the power to the laptop on its own?

I am observing a very strange issue on a linux laptop and I can only
simulate it for now when DT is used - using GPU - new AMD processor,
exporting thousands of images then - when the temperature rises - start
intense disk operations (copying of files for example). Unplug the power
adapter from the wall is needed to restore the power.

If anybody is using AMD based linux laptop - would you mind please
sending a screenshot from "Psensor" when the computer is heavily
utilized (like exporting thousands of images out of DT using GPU)? I
would really want to know the temperature scope.

The ones of main concern for me are "Tdie" "Tctl" "temp1" (the 4th value
top to bottom on Psensor)

Have anybody seen more than 100 Celsius on the above values on any
laptop when under stress? If not - what do you observe as a normal scope
for you when the machine is under stress?

well, you essentially have one which you have opted to not use. Shut dt
down after use or after an import and restart it. Takes something less
than six seconds for dt to display on my 10 year old linux system screen.
