[darktable-user] Notice for NVIDIA users about kernel 5.9 (esp. for Arch/gentoo/etc. users)

2020-10-30 Thread Ariel Kanterewicz
Hi, all

I got bit by the GPL taint thing, so I'm here to warn others.
The TLDR is that NVIDIA's drivers don't work well with the latest kernel
(5.9) and OpenCL just plain disappears, so avoid it until they have it
sorted out.

Here's a writeup on the issue from phoronix for anyone interested in the
details:
https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item=NVIDIA-Linux-5.9-Delayed

Happy editing!

Re: [darktable-user] Changeover to Linux

2020-10-20 Thread Ariel Kanterewicz
You should be able to import the RAWs with the XMP sidecards and get them
to work without issue, but there are some small things that depend on your
user data, like 3D LUTs or SVG watermarks (which are basically external
files in both cases), so careful with those.

[darktable-user] Some useful scripts for file management

2018-07-16 Thread Ariel Kanterewicz
I did a couple of scripts that were useful to me, so I'm sharing them in
the hopes they're useful to someone else :-D

These work for me® on Arch Linux, but they use standard stuff so they
should work fine on nearly any linux that runs Darktable. one creates a new
folder in the SD card if needed, the other one adds a datestamp prefix to
RAW files.

If you're referring to the blue color grading, the easiest way is to play
with white balance and stuff that modifies the luma channel. Another
fancier alternative is the low light module:

The CMakeError.log and CMakeOutput.log in that gist are the complete files,
created from a clean copy extracted from the release tarball. Which other
file should I share? (the output from the terminal after running the build
shell script is not helpful, I just get a "there was an error" message

Re: Re: Re: [darktable-user] Nvidia graphic card replacement

2017-12-09 Thread Ariel Kanterewicz
Hi Micha,

I have a 1050 Ti with 4GB of RAM, that's in a system with:
- cpu: ryzen 7 1700
- motherboard: X370 chipset (Gigabyte AX370-Gaming K7)
- RAM: 2 stickcs of 16GB DDR4 2400MHz (Crucial Ballistix Sport LT)

And Darktable works fine for me, although I never used a 1060 here so I
don't have a context to compare. If point me to where the test image is I
can run the benchmarks.

Re: [darktable-user] Cores or power per core?

2017-04-06 Thread Ariel Kanterewicz
You could maybe look at some benchmarks? Although what I think is more
important is the performance of the new CPU vs the GPU you plan to keep.
Another option is to upgrade the GPU and buy extra RAM for the main system,
if you only want DT to work faster (an SSD would help too).

I have a Phenom II X4 945 with lots of RAM (started with 8 GB, have 16 GB
now), I used to have a NVIDIA 460 and the switch to the Radeon 460 was a
change between night and day. The NVIDIA perofrmed more or less equal to
the CPU, the Radeon goes WAY faster than that. I even switched on the full
sample option on export, it's still way faster than before.

[darktable-user] How I got OpenCL to work with AMDGPU

2017-02-05 Thread Ariel Kanterewicz
Hi All,

I recently had to uninstall AMDGPU-PRO due to some packaging issues (I use
Arch, the others who use it will understand the details of this), and was
forced to use plain AMDGPU. the plain AMDGPU plays nicer with newer kernels
(I have 4.8.13 at the moment), but oepncl support is not as good as
AMDGPU-PRO.

I managed to solve this by installing this package from AUR:
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/opencl-amd/

Now Darktable works with OpenCL as it was working with the full AMDGPU-PRO
driver.

The package basically installs de following libs in /usr/lib/, taking them
from the AMDGPU-PRO driver instead of the plain AMDGPU:

   - libamdocl64.so
   - libamdocl12cl64.so
   - libdrm_amdgpo.so.1
   - libdrm_amdgpo.so.1.0.0

I hope this is of help to other Radeon users =)

Re: [darktable-user] Making a local colour change?

If you want to force a particular color, the "colorize" module will do.

You may want to look at this post from the blog:

It explains a solution for pretty much the same issue you have here.
