Re: [darktable-user] Nvidia graphic card replacement

2017-12-10 Thread Brune Wayce
Hello,
as you can find here "
https://www.mail-archive.com/darktable-user@lists.darktable.org/msg03683.html";
I had a similar problem.
In the end I bought a 1050ti (Asus EX-GTX 1050 TI-4G) and I'm pretty happy
with the final performance result.

My box:
cpu: intel i5-3450
ram: 8gb
sda: SSD Samsung 830 128GB 2,5"
sdb: Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB 3.5"
video card: NVidia 1050ti 4GB
os: debian 9 (stable)
proprietary driver version: 375.82
darktable: version 2.2.5

I've run the proposed test:

 http://www.mirada.ch/bench.SRW
> put both in one directory and run:
>
> Opencl enabled:
> darktable-cli bench.SRW test.jpg --core -d perf -d opencl
>
> Opencl disabled:
> darktable-cli bench.SRW test.jpg --core --disable-opencl -d perf

and here are my result:

with OpenCl: [dev_process_export] pixel pipeline processing took 8,128 secs
(11,640 CPU)
without OpenCl: [dev_process_export] pixel pipeline processing took 28,074
secs (108,056 CPU)

Hope this helps.

Bye,
Brune

I've made a file like your suggestion, with just an entry for the DMC-G7,
and now it works!

But why in ~/.local/share/lensfun is accepted, and in /usr/share/lensfun is
not?

Re: [darktable-user] lensfun database update, lens ok camera ko

2017-11-20 Thread Brune Wayce
I've done a little test:
 - Starting darktable from terminal: no errors

 - Adding deliberately a typo in mil-panasonic.xml and starting from
terminal: no errors

 - Removing a camera from mil-panasonic.xml and starting from terminal: the
same camera is still present in the lens correction module.

I think darktable does not look in this file to fill the camera list of the
lens correction module...

I've modified the mil-panasonic.xml adding the DMC-G7 entry:
---

Panasonic
DMC-G7
Micro 4/3 System
2

---
but it does not work!
Within darktable the camera is not listed... What else is needed?

[darktable-user] lensfun database update, lens ok camera ko

2017-11-19 Thread Brune Wayce
Hello,
I am on Debian 9 (stable) and my camera/lens was not present in the lensfun
database seen by darktable.
After some troubles, in the end I did succeed updating the lensfun
database: I did have to install all the *lensfun* packages (actually I did
not install "gimp-lensfun" and "liblensfun-doc"), and then executed a "sudo
lensfun-update-data". After this I manually copied the .xml files from
"var/lib/lensfun-updates/version1" to "usr/share/lensfun/version1".

Now my lens (Panasonic Lumix G Vario 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6) is in the database
and Darktable can see it, but my camera (Panasonic DMC-G7) is still not
present! I can manually select one of the other cameras (I can choose for
example Panasonic DMC-G6) and Darktable apply all the lens corrections, but
I'm not sure this is the optimal solution...

What should I do to make darktable automatically select my camera/lens set?

Thank you,
Brune

So I will not need to download and run the driver from the nvidia website?
It is just enough to install the nvidia drivers with the apt command
(provided that the non-free component is enabled)?
Awesome!

Thank you Guillermo, if your "performance prevision" is correct I'll be
very happy with the result of the 1050ti in respect of my current situation.
I too usually export few pictures per week, so the "live feeling" is more
important than the export time.

Now, also with few modules enabled (crop/rotate, exposure, local contrast,
equalizer, denoise profiled), during the zoom in/out the panel freeze with

Real time edition is good for both the cards? And the difference with the

So iiuc for 25Mpix we have:
[25*1024*1024] * 4 * 4 * 3 = 1258291200 byte = 1.171875 GB

And for 16MPix (my pana G7) we have:
[16*1024*1024] * 4 * 4 * 3 = 805306368 bye = 0.75 GB

Am I right?
If yes, with 3GB I should be ok, at least till I upgrade my camera...

I know that the 1060 would be a lot more better than the 1050ti, but it is
also too much expensive. The 1050ti (4gb) is in the range150-160 euro, the
1060 starts from 220 euro for the 3gb, and from 290 for the 6gb...

And I do not yet have understood how much influence has the amount of

No experience with Debian, sorry. Under OpenSuse, it's just as easy as any
other package, once you enable the repository. And no idea in what the
different brands differ (probably amount and quality of memory?).

But, if you have any possibility to stretch and get the 1060, that might be
a
much better buy: the Phoronix page shows an enormous difference, and
according
to the NVidia site, the 1060 should be at least twice as powerful as the
1050
(almost twice as many GPU cores, better clock speed).

Don't forget that using the GPU has an overhead, and you will also be using
the GPU for your display (unless you can configure your system to use the
Intel
graphics for the display).

[darktable-user] Re: OpenCL: 1050ti or RX560?

2017-09-03 Thread Brune Wayce
Ok, after all your precious tips and explanations I think I'll go with the
NVidia 1050ti and the proprietary driver.

Is someone using already NVidia proprietary driver on debian testing? Is a
problematic installation?

And with the various 1050ti (zotac, msi, gigabyte, palit... ) is there a
card better than the others regarding the use with Linux, debian and
darktable...?

Thanks,

Hello
I'm a newbie of Darktable and I need some advices :)

My computer is a desktop Intel i5-3450 _without_ dedicated gpu, and my OS

With files from my old camera (Oly E-520) the speed and reactivity of
Darktable is accettable, but with files from my "new" camera (Panasonic G7)
the
performance is poor, so I want to improve the performance adding a new GPU
so to take advantage of the OpenCL.

My budget is little, I have to stay within 150euros: I'm orientated to the
AMD RX560 (4GB) or to the Nvidia GTX 1050ti.
If I look at the various general or "gaming" benchmarks, I find that the
1050ti is faster than the RX560. But if I look here (
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=
darktable-opencl-gpu&num=3) I see that the RX460 (and I assume also the
RX560) is faster than the 1050ti.
If I look at the economical side, the 1050ti is a little more expensive
than the RX560.

The question is: what do you suggest me to buy? The RX560 or the 1050ti? Or
another one, different from this two?

Looking at this mailing list I've seen that there is also the problem of
the drivers for the GPUs. I can use the Open driver or the Proprietary one,
simply I'll choose the faster/better of the two.

And last: is my linux distribution (Debian testing) problematic for the
installation of the Open/driver?

Thanks to all,

So, please let me if I'm correct, particolare when therm is "(???)":

AMD PROPRIETARY DRIVERS
1. Official from amd, but only for the newest cards, only for kernel 4.8
and 4.10, only for "stable versions" of redhat, centos and ubuntu
2. Manually unpacking the driver you can install to almost any distribution
rpm or deb based, provided that the kernel is 4.8 or 4.10 and the card is
supported by the driver
3. Some new cards (rx550) are supported only by kernel 4.11

AMD OPEN DRIVERS
1. Valid for almost every card
2. Available for every distro (also debian testing) (???) and every kernel
(???)
3. Accettable performance

NVIDIA PROPRIETARY DRIVERS
1. Valid for almost every card
2. Available for every distro (also debian testing) (???) and every kernel
(???)
3. Good performance

NVIDIA OPEN DRIVERS

3. Accettable performance

I did update to the last git version, and I see that now it's the
2.3.0+449. Is this version "equivalent" to the 2.2.4?

Thank you

supported: noise profile and custom matrix are not present in darktable
database.
I'm interested in "noise profiling" my camera: is this guide (

valid? Or are there more updated tutorials?
