I would be surprised if you'd get this working at all. The (IMHO) most
important aspect of h.a. photography is the shear distance between you
and the subject. That can add up to 50 kilometers or more (as you can
clearly see from your mountain pictures).
Between you and the subject there are so many moist and dust particles
that half of the light is gone, and the other half is distorted. And you
don't even get to chose which half you get.

I live in remote flat area with outlook on distant mountains. And I see
the same sort of problem. On a sunny, dry summer day "my" mountains are
grayish and dull , while after a big storm I have clear vision, with
vivid colors for at least 25 kilometers.

My best guess is that successful h.a. photographers simply wait for the
best opportunity: such as after a big rain, when the air has been washed
clean. Or during winter time, when the air is dry(er).

Your idea for instance in providing simple sliders for 'shadows' and

That's for DT to figure out, or for the SSD (Simple Slider Developer ;-)
Anything which is an improvement over the non-edited version is
acceptable. And then the person behind the keyboard can select the

You have no idea how often I've been annoyed by the fact that I can't
find what I think I need, at which point DT doesn't give me any support.
Just because of the complicated UI and the enormous amount of options.
For the couple of times per year that I process my raw images it again
and again takes me a few nights to get going. So yes, for the expert I
think there is a use case to have all those options available. For the
occasional photographer like myself DT is a dense tropical forest hard
to find your way through. BTW, the more options available to more
important it becomes to have a very well organized UI, whether
professional photographer or not.

It takes time and patience to appreciate the fullness of dt,

Why do I need to appreciate te fullness of DT?

in my opinion that effort is well compensated through the creative
capability.

That's not me you're talking about. IMO you're generalizing the DT
population as (semi) professional photographers who can't survive
without all the bells and whistles of DT at their disposal.

You've hit the nail on the head. I use DT much less than I'd like just
because of the complexity of the GUI and the organisation of the
modules. I shoot in raw and for my vacation pics, I only need the basics
to brush them up. But I never know where to find what I need. And I
really don't want to become a DT expert. That would be so much missing
the point.  So what happens is that I save up  a years worth of pictures
(perhaps one hundred) re-learn how to use DT and then process them in
the second evening of the "DT 101 course". So yes, I support the Basic

Re: [darktable-user] Canon CR2 colour cast problem with multiple exposures at ISO 50

2017-05-20 Thread Koos Pol

I've run a few checks on openSUSE 42.2. And I made a few funny discoveries:

1. In DT, if I turn the white balance module off, the picture looks very
much ok.

2. Gwenview shows the picture ok by default.
3. Kolourpaint shows the picture ok by default.
 4. Gimp shows the picture ok by default.

The bottom 3 possible use the same libraries to read the CR2 file. But
that's just a possibility.

There is definitely a white balance problem. But finding out where it
is

I am having this strange problem with darktable and my Canon EOS 6D. Below
is a description of the problem.

Which darktable version?

The problem is either the wrong white balance being read (is that RAW HDR?),
or wrong black/white levels being read.

I'm using darktable 2.0.7, and it doesn't look like I can get any
other later version because my linux mint 17.3 is based on ubuntu
14.04. I'll have to upgrade to linux mint 18.1 to get any later
darktable updates from the pmjdebruijn ppa.

My Canon 6D does not support raw HDR. The file is just a normal
CR2 raw file, with multiple exposures on it. It's possible that
the multiple "averaged" exposures is screwing up the white balance
data, but then why does the jpeg preview look OK? Strangely
enough, my google drive preview of the file also shows a magenta cast.

Before I go into the hassle of installing a new linux mint OS to
use the latest darktable version, can someone confirm that this is
not an issue with darktable's reading of the file? Here is a link
to one of the problem files:

Thanks so much.

Swee

I shot a photo with 9 multiple exposures (averaged) layered on the same
image using my Canon 6D at ISO 50 (camera's "L" setting). The preview was
fine when I viewed it on the back LCD screen of the camera.

The file imported OK into darkroom. The preview in the lighttable module
looked fine. However, when I go into the darkroom module, there is a strong
magenta cast over the photo. If I exit the darkroom module back into the
lighttable module, the preview image again looked fine. In order for
darktable's darkroom image of the file to look like the lighttable preview,
I had to turn off the white balance module inside the darkroom!

Hi,

Two more things you can do to verify everything is OK:
- run darktable-cmstest; if it reports "Your system seems to be
correctly configured" on the last line, you should be OK (it'll also
output the path of the profile in use, check that, too, so you don't
end up using some generic profile); if it reports "Better check your
system setup - some monitors reported different profiles You may
experience inconsistent color rendition between color managed
applications", it's time to investigate further

- you can also use the command dispwin -V path/to/your/profile.icc to
check if it's loaded; I previously had some cases where the colour
management settings did not work for some reason. If it outputs
"Verify: 'path/to/your/profile.icc' IS loaded (discrepancy 0.0%)",
everything is OK. If not, you can force loading of the profile with
dispwin -V path/to/your/profile.icc. To switch between profiled and
non-profiled mode, you can use dispwin -U (unload)
