2019-04-13 Thread Matej Martinovic
Ok, I'm hoping for a compact version as the font is a bit to big for
my taste. Overall the GUI looks a bit "flatter" which is a modern
design approach, I suppose. It will need some getting used to, but
it's a step in the right direction.

BUT: somehow the buttons in the attached image got even smaller :D

Hello,

I'm not sure whether this is intended behaviour or a bug, please see the
linked image. The font is a lot bigger, and overall the GUI doesn't look as
"refined" as before.

Hey Paul,

I now see the 4 different areas within your image CF003196.IIQ, as you
described in your original post. I think this is worth a bug report on
https://redmine.darktable.org/projects/darktable so the devs can see
what is going on.
You can create a new bug report after you've logged in to

Re: [darktable-user] Mark folder as 'done'

2018-12-10 Thread Matej Martinovic
I'm using color labels and or tags to organize specific collections.
Also collection presets are really helpful.
An example: I have about 150 images from my last trekking trip that
should be stitched into a panoramic image. I have tagged those with
something like "panoramic_singles". I can then filter my images with
the collection module to show me only images with this tag. Using the
presets button I can save a preset to the collection module to be ably
to quickly find the images I need.

Also, to filter finished images from the same trekking trip, I'm using
the green color label. Green means "ready to export" to me, so I've
marked finished images with green (F3-key) and can filter for those
using the collections module, see the attached image.

The collection module allows you to create very specific collections.

Yes, it's how I've filtered for jpegs with/without corresponding raws
in the past. As you've stated, it won't help if you want to show B.JPG
*AND* C.RAW. I've misread that in your OP.

Hey,

the settings you apply to each image are stored in the .xmp-file. This
is located in the same directory as the image itself.

You can reset images from within darktable, either in lighttable mode
via history stack-> discard or in darkroom mode via the history module
on the left side. Click on "0 - Original" and then on compress history

Re: [darktable-user] Highlight Details

Hello,

Hi All,

I am a recent convert to Darktable, and seem to be battling to find a good way
to recover detail in highlights. Lightroom does such a good job of it with a
single slider.

I found this video: https://hooktube.com/watch?v=JF5CFQPgidk but he doesn't
recover any detail, simply push colour into area's that are washed out... which
is not what I am attempting to achieve. I would like to see the details in
blown out cloudy skies recovered. Since I have literally seen this possible in
lightroom, I am surprise I cannot recover the detail on the same raw file
within darktable.

Maybe you have all seen this question before, and have some suggestions?

Thanks,

Chris

Re: [darktable-user] denoising problems

2018-03-07 Thread Matej Martinovic

Hey,

denoising in darktable is somewhat tricky:

Use the *denoise (profiled)*, set it to "wavelet" and set blend mode to
"color". This eliminates the awful color noise. Use a *second instance*
of denoise (profiled), set it to non-local means and choose blend mode
"lightness". With that second instance i'll usually reduce the strength
or opacity to my liking to keep some detail.

You can set some presets and have them apply the correct denoising
automatically.

This info is also available in the manual
https://www.darktable.org/usermanual/en/correction_group.html, under
3.4.4.3. Denoise – profiled -> mode.

Re: [darktable-user] image information > focus distance

It's the distance from the sensor plane of your camera to the subject
which is in focus. You can see the set focus distance also on the
distance scale on your lens.

Re: [darktable-user] Darktable on Windows

2018-02-20 Thread Matej Martinovic
I'm not sure you would benefit from OpenCL. As someone already pointed
out, you need a somewhat decent GPU to make use of it. Did it work
before the upgrade to 16.04?

Your overall slow performance may also be due to heat problems. Have you
checked the temperature of your CPU and GPU? Older laptops get filled up
with dust. The CPU/GPU reaches higher temperatures and throttles itself.

Windows, btw, is never the solution ;)

There's another issue that I thought last night, about changing
operating systems. I produce some publications, photobooks, etc, with
a software that I choose only because it has a Linux version. They
have a windows version, of course, but my books were made in this
filesystem, with these photo locations. If I change to windows,
pathnames would not match and I thing I would loose my work.

This only would prevent me to change OS.

Well, I think I could try to go back to 14.04 and use the packaged
version of dt. Since its an old computer, maybe I should stick with an
old OS version ?

I always used it from PPA. I understand there is some dependency
that only comes with 16.04. To my knowledge - the only benefit to
use Open CL (if this is your goal) is if the GPU is very fast. I
can use Open CL "GeForce GT 525M/PCIe/SSE2" - I believe 2 GB
memory for the GPU but I have no speed benefits because my GPU is
too old (my whole computer is too old actually). For speed - I use
the CPU. My only benefit for the GPU is to have a real monitor
plugged to the laptop.

I got burned before with AMD...

And with that old computer - I am processing still quite a bit of
pictures (thousands actually) - thanks to DT

Compared to

DT on Dell Inspiron (late 2014) - this is i5 (gen 4) - machine

For now - I am _not_ going back to Windows. And the issue is not
only with DT - everything on windows is much slower. So much so
that nobody at home can stand it most of the time except my

I know I am comparing i5 vs i7 but the windows is 3 years newer

work much better in terms of speed).

Re: [darktable-user] Exported JPG vs. Camera JPG

2017-10-23 Thread Matej Martinovic

Hello Johannes,

please do, an in depth tutorial would be nice. I'm struggling with the
default presentation of my D610 images and thinkig about investing in a
color chart by Wolf Faust.

heya,

this 60D case is really unfortunate. the way we handled defaults in
the past isn't very good.. in a sense that if we now replaced the
apparently broken 60D "enhanced matrix" it'll break history stacks for
all old images.

we should probably store at least a 3x3 matrix in the parameters of
the input profile module such that it doesn't depend on an external
icc file. now if you select an external profile, you'd have to move
the icc file around with your library to be able to reproduce the same
results.

the darktable-chart workflow is somewhat better, because it does store
all required information in the history stack (and it's editable and a
more expressive mapping/lut). so if you are going to create a profile
for a chart.. i'd recommend you do it with darktable-chart as a
preset/style for the colour lut module. i think i should prepare an
extended tutorial how to do this.

the blues.

Yes that's what I noticed too. If I switch to "standard colour matrix" the
results are much better.

I found creating my own matrix from a Wolf Faust target worked really well,

Tim Rolph also mentioned the Wolf Faust target but I have to admit that looking at the
website I don't know what to order. What "Order #" would be the right one?

but ultimately decided that having the additional dependency of having that
profile present if I wanted
to re-edit the images at a later date wasn't worth it, and I do much as you do:
use the standard
profile. Sometimes also setting the gamut clipping to linear rec2020 is a good
option as well.

I don't really get that. Don't you have to create the profile just once and
then it's done? As the color mapping should contain all colours it shouldn't
change from photo shot to phot phot, should it? Or would it be needed to create
a new matrix for every photo shot just like doing a gray card shot for the
white balance?

I can probably dig up the 60D profile if you'd like to try it.

It would be great if you could lookup the profile. I'd like to give it a try.

[darktable-user] Send files to trash is not working properly

2017-10-08 Thread Matej Martinovic

Hello,

if i want to trash a file, that is located on a second hdd and not my
/home folder (which is on a ssd), i get an error message stating that
the file cannot be moved to trash.
"Unable to find or create trash directory for
/media/myuser/path/to/file/on/hdd"

I can trash files from my file manager without problems, but i'm not
sure if it's solely a problem with darktable. Trashing files within
darktable that are on my /home works as it should.

Could there be a problem with my /etc/fstab?

I'm running darktable from git under fedora 26.
