OpensSUSe Leap 42.3 here as well.
In my experience, with YAST2 the only complication is that you have to
activate a special repository for the NVidia drivers (the closed source ones,
that is), for the rest darktable with OpenCL just works. (see: https://
en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_drivers ). Any update requiring new driver versions
gets taken care of automatically (usually...).
Unfortunately, since Suse remade its main web page, that kind of information
got harder to find.

If you download the drivers outside the repository system, you indeed have
more work, as it becomes your responability to keep the driver synced with
kernel updates and such.

But, if you install Tumbleweed, you want to stay with the latest versions for
all parts of the system. That also implies you have more chances something
breaks during an update...
I decided to use Leap, and just look for extra repositories for the few
programs where I want to use the latest versions (actually only Darktable and
some other photography-related programs).

I'm using openSUSE Leap 42.3. I'm aware it's not the same as
Tumbleweed, but I think most of the key bits are the same. nVidia
(I'm assuming that that's the GPU you have) support in openSUSE is
weak, but after a lot of poking around I figured out how to put all
the pieces together. I'll send you my (draft) HOWTO under separate
cover.

quite happy with:

   inxi -GC
CPU: Hexa core Intel Core i7 970 (-HT-MCP-) cache: 12288 KB clock
  speeds: max: 3193 MHz 1: 1612 MHz 2: 1626 MHz 3: 1695 MHz 4:
  1611 MHz 5: 1605 MHz 6: 1609 MHz 7: 1625 MHz 8: 1640 MHz 9:
  1656 MHz 10: 1622 MHz 11: 1942 MHz 12: 1671 MHz

Graphics: Card: NVIDIA GF106 [GeForce GTS 450]
Display Server: X.Org 1.19.6 drivers: nvidia (unloaded:
  modesetting,fbdev,nv,vesa,nouveau)
  Resolution: 1920x1080@60.00hz, 1920x1080@60.00hz
  OpenGL: renderer: GeForce GTS 450/PCIe/SSE2
  version: 4.5.0 NVIDIA 390.25

I do have openCL enabled but doesn't seem to speed up or slow down
anything.

and there is little "play with", only reinstalling the NV...run driver
when Mesa or the kernel is changed/updated. and that is only a one line
script.
