Usage of dictionary words for encoding is the interesting bit.
Otherwise it is the geohashing technique which is in play. And geohash has
been in use for quite some time now.

Interesting stuff, hadn't realised there were so many systems.

I wonder why Google hasn't publicized their system more, especially since 
its already integrated with Google Maps and its only a 6 digit code

With regards to adoption it seems as though these systems will be easier 
for location based service companies/government services to adopt
For general community users who are just looking to find their way around, 
you're right... they would want the address to have some 
intuition/hierarchy.
It appears that's what FB is going for with their approach. It seems as 
though their approach may be accepted more easily than W3W.
I don't think either of the two will be organically adopted though. They 
would depend on government to force it through.
