Re: [datameet] Rajasthan's New District and Block Shapefiles

2024-06-30 Thread sreeram kandimalla
For districts you are likely to find this data on Openstreetmap or
Wikipedia.
Block count/names itself will be hard to find, let alone maps.
Tehsils might be available from the same sources mentioned above.

Tirupati ward boundaries are available from Swachh Bharat Mission Urban at

That file has wards for most of the country. You will need to filter out
Tirupati ones.

Re: [External Email] [datameet] List of Police Stations in India

2024-02-05 Thread sreeram kandimalla
I suspect the data you are looking for will be hard to find. Maybe you will
have some luck looking at NCRB resources.

Date of entry in OSM doesn't necessarily reflect the date of creation of
the Police Station. Consider the fact that a lot of the Police Stations are
currently not even entered in OSM.

Also, the Survey Of India data is likely from 2005.

Hi Mona,

I got lucky with the data I even found. Here is where I was looking -
https://onemapggm.mcg.gov.in/server/rest/services .

You can browse and see if there is any layer matching what you are
looking for.

Once you have the layer, you can follow the instructions in this page
<https://opencity.in/explainer/how-to-download-maps-from-gis-websites/> to
download the data.

Thanks,

Re: [datameet] Mapping Local Government Directory to WikiData

2024-01-17 Thread sreeram kandimalla
One more update here..

Wikidata syncing with LGD is done till subdistrict level.

You can query them at https://w.wiki/8sWm

Also, I tried to add all alternate names I could find as aliases in
wikidata.

Automating this syncing and updating periodically is something I might take
up at a future date.

But I suspect manual intervention and review is going to be required for
this.

If someone wants to have a go at it, I will try to provide support.

Re: [datameet] Re: APIs for States, Districts, ... Panchayats

2024-01-17 Thread sreeram kandimalla
Hey Ashim,

Looks like LGD has not updated the block mappings for Rajasthan, as can be
seen by looking at Sanchore District at
https://lgdirectory.gov.in/globalviewBlockforcitizen.do .
The dumps reflect what is in LGD so nothing I can do there.
I think the block to district mapping can be reconstructed using the
villages_by_blocks.csv and villages.csv files. I hope that works out.

Thanks,
Sreeram K

but via APIs because the government keeps changing it.

I've managed to find APIs that fetch *recent data* for:

STATES

DISTRICTS

SUBDISTRICTS

However, I can't find similar APIs for BLOCKS and PANCHAYATS. The APIs

Blocks, Panchayats

Can anyone help to find APIs for Blocks and Panchayats that fetch *recent

Just an FYI, LGD mappings have been asserted in wikidata till the district
level based on Thejesh's work and I verified them independently.

Moving onto lower divisions( Tehsils/CD blocks ) now. The wikidata
hierarchy for these is unclear and needs to be cleaned up.

 Hi Thejesh,

The best place to discuss this is here -
 https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata_talk:WikiProject_India

There are Wikidata contributors who had been working on this, who might
 respond there.

 Thanks,

Re: [datameet] Where can I get India's Tehsil boundary map in shape format.

2023-09-21 Thread sreeram kandimalla
Tehsils are revenue administrative units. Community development blocks on
the other hand are development administrative units and they are not the
same as tehsils in most states.

I am yet to see an official definition of what a subdistrict is.

Census documents state that they use revenue administrative units while
presenting data. But individual district handbooks in some states( West
Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand etc )
also say that they use community development blocks to present data.

West Bengal is one state where it is known that Community development
blocks are co-terminus with Tehsils.

In general, it is all very confusing. Anyone who knows better can shed some
light here.

Re: [datameet] Rivers of India shape files

2022-12-05 Thread sreeram kandimalla
I have found the pyesridump python
package quite useful for scraping arcgis servers.

In this particular case, when opening the url
https://indiawris.gov.in/wris/#/riverBasins in a browser, one can observe
that the arcgis rest services endpoint is
https://arc.indiawris.gov.in/server/rest/services by looking at the network
calls being made by the webpage.

This URL can be directly used in the browser to locate the individual
layers available on the server.. In this case the rivers layer was found at
https://arc.indiawris.gov.in/server/rest/services/Common/River_WRP/MapServer/1

On a machine with python and pip installed, you can run the following
commands to get the rivers data

One time installation of esridump:
*pip install esridump*

Retrieval of the Rivers Layer:

*esri2geojson -m 100 --jsonlines
https://arc.indiawris.gov.in/server/rest/services/Common/River_WRP/MapServer/1

rivers.geojsonl*

The timeouts, batch size ( -m ) command line arguments can be adjusted if
the default settings fail.

The layer is retrieved here into the geojsonl file *rivers.geojsonl. *

Other layers can be similarly retrieved.

Disclaimer: I have not validated if I got the transformations and merging
of the data right. It should mostly be fine. And the License is not GODL
despite what it says in the archives currently. Good luck.

Re: [datameet] Are all public funded datasets open by default under GODL license?

2022-10-28 Thread sreeram kandimalla
So, I filed an RTI( my first ) regarding this with DST, which after being
kicked around between DST and MeitY was rejected saying the questions
weren't clear enough. So, I went around looking for more clear questions
from people who actually had some clue of how to interpret these things and
found this interesting discussion about the same question. -
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template_talk:GODL-India#Can_the_user_site_assume_GODL%3F

The discussion seemed dead without having ever reached a conclusion. But,
there was some information there about what to ask for in an RTI and I
filed another RTI with those questions, this time I sent it to both the
departments and they promptly forwarded it to Ministry of Railways, which
then pushed it back to DST. In the end I got a response from the "e-Governance
Group under MeitY"

Here is the response I got -

---

1) Is GODL valid if originally used outside of data.gov.in?

Reply:GODL is a Gazette Notified document (
https://data.gov.in/sites/default/files/Gazette_Notification_OGDL.pdf) and
it does apply on the data sets published under NDSAP and through the OGD
Platform.

2) Is GODL valid for data formats outside Section 3.2 of Implementation
Guidelines?

Reply:Section 3.2 of NDSAP recommends that data has to publish on OGD
platform in data formats prevalent in Government. The data formats outside
the above said section are not allowed to be publish on OGD platform. The
Government Open Data License (GODL) does apply on the data sets published
under NDSAP and through the OGD Platform.

3) Is section 3.2 of Implementation Guidelines actually being bypassed?

Reply:Section 3.2 of NDSAP recommends that data has to publish on OGD
platform in data formats prevalent in Government.

4) Is Implementation Guidelines mandatory or best practice?

Reply:The Implementation Guidelines for National Data Sharing and
Accessibility Policy (NDSAP) details out recommendations and operational
procedures for the purpose of implementation of NDSAP by government
agencies.

5) Is GODL assumable by re-users for any Govt work found outside the OGD
platform?

Reply: The Government Open Data License (GODL) does regulate the re-use of
data sets published under NDSAP and through the OGD Platform.

6) Are works found in Lok Sabha and other legislative/judicial sites
assumable under GODL?

Reply: The Government Open Data License (GODL) does apply on the data sets
published under NDSAP and through the OGD Platform.

I would like some opinion on the response to question no: 5.

My interpretation is that the response means yes, you can assume GODL, if
the work falls under NDSAP. But, I feel like I am being stonewalled with
grammar and someone parroting the GODL gazette.

So, can someone with a better grasp of the English language and Officialese
interpret this for me?

Thanks,

Sreeram K

In the URL above the map shown on the left is derived from the SOI Open

Cloudflare R2 is also an option for storage.. zero egress charges.. and yes
bulk processing can always be dockerized by the pulling the data and
running the code locally.

Till subdistrict level, OSM + wikidata would be a good starting place for
the database you are looking for. Past that.. I am not aware of any work in
that direction.. someone needs to write one. Even till subdistrict level..
there will be entries with names missing in some languages.. using Google
transliteration tools or ai4bharat transliteration tools might turn out
helpful.

Re: [datameet] Karnataka Polling Station Boundaries scraped from KSRSAC

2022-08-08 Thread sreeram kandimalla
You did better than I have.. I haven't tested any of the ideas yet.. but my
research suggested that this is the best way to share geospatial data. I
will try to build a webpage to show the advantages of what you just did
when I find time. Pmtiles doesn't yet have support in GDAL yet.. so most
existing tools won't work with it yet.. it is basically mbtiles done better
and cloud native by default. The author is still cleaning up the
specification.

And side note to people sharing Indian geospatial data on GitHub.. truncate
the coordinates to 5 decimal points as the data storage is not in India.

 Hello folks,

I had scraped the polling station boundaries for Karnataka from the
KSRSAC site (https://kgis.ksrsac.in/pollinginfo/). The data is up on
 this GitHub repo: https://github.com/Vonter/india-polling-stations

There are a total of 60366 polling stations. On the repo there is a
Karnataka.geojson with the boundaries for all the 60366 polling stations
but it is a huge 156MB file. So I have also divided it into separate
GeoJSONs for each of the 224 Assembly Constituencies (~1MB each) and each
of the 31 districts (~6MB each) in Karnataka.

I'll soon be adding Parliamentary Constituency level GeoJSONs.
Converting the GeoJSONs into other formats is also in the pipeline. If
anyone knows of other states that have similar sites which could be scraped
to generate polling station boundary GeoJSONs, I would be happy to try and
 do so.

When I was searching for Karnataka polling station boundary geodata a
few days back (out of interest in more granular population density geodata)
I didn't find it anywhere online. So I hope that someone else out there
searching for it will find this data useful now that it has been scraped
 from KSRSAC.

 Regards,
 Vivek

Re: [datameet] Are all public funded datasets open by default under GODL license?

To go even further.. Would NDSAP/GODL apply to cases where the data is
clearly eligible for it, but the source website terms and conditions say
otherwise.. Example: https://censusindia.gov.in/census.website/node/288

Re: [datameet] Are all public funded datasets open by default under GODL license?

2022-08-07 Thread sreeram kandimalla
The question is whether for the current version of GODL is already good
enough.

Do we have any legal experts around who can chime in? Or can people suggest
any legal experts we can talk to about this?

Re: [datameet] Re: NEW DISTRICTS OF INDIA SHAPEFILE

2022-08-05 Thread sreeram kandimalla
Hey Deepak,

I am very much interested in this project.

I haven't looked into your data yet.

But, In general I am looking for an approach where the sources for all the
geometries are noted and so are the corrections made.. So that everything
is reproducible starting from the sources.

This along with the LGD data archived daily at
https://ramseraph.github.io/opendata/lgd/ will be helpful in creating a map
of India as of a given date.

Thanks,
Sreeram k

Just saw this update from the census website terms and conditions -

Material featured on this Portal may be reproduced free of charge after
taking proper permission by sending a mail to us. However, the material has
to be reproduced accurately and not to be used in a derogatory manner or in
a misleading context.

Don't remember seeing this before. Much wow. I think this invalidates most

If you don't mind putting in the effort of digitising some data.. the
census 2011 administrative atlases do have major roads and railways data..
not sure how complete they are.
https://censusindia.gov.in/census.website/data/atlas

Alternatively, there is also non vector data available from 2004-06 from
https://onlinemaps.surveyofindia.gov.in/ ..

I have collated the survey of india data as a raster basemap.. details are
at https://ramseraph.github.io/opendata/maps/SOI/

If anyone does want to vectorize the SOI data.. do talk to me before going
all out with downloading the data.

@nisar.harsh it would be nice to have the date of data collection for the
individual roads published as well.. and also the method of survey.. if
aerial images were used ... Which imagery was involved and from what date.

 Hello everybody,

I am looking for shapefiles (polyline) for roads and railways as of
2011 (or between 2007 - 2013) in India. Any help in this regard will be
 highly appreciated.

 Regards,
 Karan Talathi

Code to get data from
JJM.. https://github.com/ramSeraph/opendata/tree/master/jjm

The code is the way it is because it had to deal with the weird state
management framework used by the site.

It mainly pulls habitation data from JJM. It can hopefully be used as a
template to pull the data you are looking for.

This is late but I am going to leave the link here for anyone who comes
looking.
