[datameet] Re: OpenLocationCode v/s xaddress

2018-12-11 Thread Nikhil VJ
Hi Shijith, just linking to a past conversation regarding w3w, you'll find
some analysis has already been done there:

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!searchin/datameet/openlocationcode|sort:date/datameet/8vQgpngPi3w/jDBFsFjWBQAJ
TED Global - Three word address for every place on Earth (Oct-Nov 2017)

One preference from coders side is to use a system that is open-source and
where all computation is happening at end user's side itself, with zero
dependence on any centralized privately owned system that can impose usage
limits (like number of API calls permitted per second or per month) and can
start metering and charging for access at any time. Plus it's preferred to
be algorithm-based rather than database-based. So OpenLocationCode (now
named Plus.codes by its creators) made it past those filters while w3w did
not.

@Thej, this is interesting, I see that Xaddress is a move towards more
remember-able yet independently computable system. And it's good that we
have multiple words to choose from. If only that one number could also be
done away with, but I understand that would probably mean bringing in many
more words so it was a compromise.

But I'd give it some time in terms of automating address generation for
list of locations. On the repo there is some activity happening for
blacklisting unsuitable words. Also, this system does depend on some
databases, with the blacklist one still under work. For places in Pune the
first word recommended is "WRONG" and then comes "ABRASIVE" for second word
for a place in the heart of the city.. who knew an algorithm would sense
the legendary Puneri Patya

from across the ether :D ;) Another link
