The guy who owns the little store next to the hotel front desk cornered
me in an elevator, was very invasive asking me about personal
information pretending to make small chat, and gave me a very unpleasant
fake-friendship forced-marketing ride.

I was tempted to report him to hotel staff.

I'll be most happy if I don't have to see his face ever again.

Give how other room-hosted events have gone in previous days, please
consider that rooms are reasonably soundproofed but not against noise
coming from the corridors.

If you are attracting a crowd at your floor and they've been having fun,
they're likely to be merrily loud on their way back to the elevator,
with a high chance of waking up everyone in every room along their way.

Noisy hacklab would be a way of hosting late events without risking this
problem. Otherwise, while moving to/from the room please do make an
effort to visualize the tired sleeping people behind each door.

Cool!

As someone not used to the evening outdoors in this area: would you
recommend mosquito repellent, or would that be a useless precaution?

Thank you for organising all this!

Hello,

I'm trying to fill the e-Conference visa application. At the page about
conference details, there are several fields where I need your input for
the right answers. I'll list here the questions, you may want to put the
answers also on https://debconf23.debconf.org/about/visas/#conference-visa
or mail them to attendees:

* Have you booked any room in Hotel/Resort etc. through any Tour Operator?
(Yes/No)
  What's the answer for DebConf-provided accomodation?
* Name/subject of the conference
* Start date
* End date
* Venue of conference
* Address
* State
* District
* Pincode

Details of organizer of conference:

* Name of organizer
* Address
* Phone no
* Email id
* Expected Port of Exit from India
 (is this where I start my trip home, i.e. Kochi, or is this the
  airport from which I take the flight that leaves India, for example
  DEL if my flight schedule home has a connection in Delhi?

Reference: (what are reference names?)

* Reference Name in India
* Address
* State
* District
* Phone
* Reference Name in $COUNTRY_OF_RESIDENCE

I would imagine that you got shots for some of those, and not for *all*
of those.

The standard childhood package in Italy in my generation had Diphtheria,
Polio and Tetanus, and later generations may have had more comprehensive
firmware updates. By personal intiative some more things from the list
above over the years.

I currently have no coverage for Typhoid fever and Tuberculosis, and I'm
thinking that while I try to understand if they're a good idea or not
for DebConf, I might as well go and get them.

Meningitis and Japanese encephalitis I also do not have, and they're
trickier to get, so I'd like to understand how important they are.

Vaccines for malaria are still under development, and I understand
malaria chemoprophylaxis is rather heavy, so I'd avoid it if it's not
needed.

Ok, I edited the wiki page with the information that I have, and the
result definitely needs editing. Too many things are listed that are
likely not relevant for the conference, and the list as it is would only
cause unneeded alarm.

I neither have the local information nor the medial expertise needed to
judge which of those can be taken out and in what conditions.

I assume some may be relevant if one wants to explore the local street
food scene, and some may be relevant if one wants to explore the
countryside (what about the day trip options?). Some may be relevant for
some parts of India but not Kerala, or for some parts of Kerala, but not
Kochi.

This is the kind of thing it pays to know early, as it may take time to
arrange the right schedule of shots with one's local health care, if
needed.

Vaccinations

2023-06-15 Thread Enrico Zini
Hello,

I'm trying to work out in due time what vaccinations I might need for
better enjoyment of my time in Kochi.

The official Italian travel guidelines[1] have several recommendations.
Summarizing and translating:

* Diphtheria, HepA, HepB, Typhoid fever, Tuberculosis, Polio, Tetanus.
  Many of these are standard coverage, or standard coverage when
  traveling

* During monsoon and post-monsoon times (may to september), increased
  risks of Meningitis, Japanese encephalitis, and Malaria

I'm having a hard time getting an appointment with someone in the local
health care who can advise about specifics for my travel, and it's
likely that the local team knows better anyway.

What would be reasonable recommendations for a stress-free stay at the
conference and conference-organised local trips?

What would be extra recommendations in case one wanted to stay one extra
week after the conference to get to know the area better?

Thanks,

Enrico

Flying out via Skopje

2022-07-16 Thread Enrico Zini
Hello,

I'm looking for ferry alternatives for my trip back home, and I see
there's a reasonably priced flight to Bologna from Skopje.

Question: how hard is it to reach Skopje? Would it be a good idea to
attempt traveling for there?

Uh thanks! I was struggling to find the right departure place on the

I do not mean the Austrian NightJet, I mean EC81 or EC87 from Deutsche
Bahn, which start in München and end in Bologna Centrale.

I just checked and Deutsche Bahn is selling tickets on that train for
July.

Being a DB train you can get it with a BahnCard discount, and you can
get it as part of a DB ticket from Berlin to Bologna with one change in
München, with DB ReiseZentrum happy to help you out in case for some
reason you can't make the connection.

Other options worth looking into:

* Train from Munich to Bologna (managed by Deutsche Bahn, so one can
  book from Germany straight to Bologna with guaranteed connections)

followed by:

* Train from Bologna to Bari (there are frequent direct connections)
  (less ferry, more train)

or

* Train from Bologna to Ancona, then ferry from Ancona to Durres (less
  train, more ferry)
