FWIW, I managed to find a SOIC-8 Clip in a basement shop of the
electronic store neighborhood of Taipei.

Thanks, noted. Worst case scenario I will ask for help on next debconf ;-)
This sounds interesting.

fwiw, i'm still planning to free my x230 from ME, just havent got around
it yet. hopefully by dc19 I know how to do that reliably.

Just for the record: We found, that we first tried the wrong
model (X220 vs X220i), but even after correcting the error, it
didn't work out. Machine is back on Lenovo flash now. I'll try
coreboot again, when home. Anyway, many thanks to Tiago, Holger
and Gunnar for work/fun with bricking and unbricking!

Umh, would have been a good idea to start this as a BoF to begin
with. But... Right now, I'd rather ask you to come over where we are
(currently, near the bar at hacklab), you will likely see a lot of
flashing.

Today, we have successfully flashed two computers and bricked one!

Tiago is currently rebuilding a new coreboot, and we hope it will
enable Wolfgang's laptop to come back to life. Failing that, it can at
least work as christmas tree lights.

For the X220, we basically followed this guide:

https://karlcordes.com/coreboot-x220/

It is a bit more complicated than the X230 because the X220 has only
one 8M ROM chip, while the X230 has 1×8M (which we don't touch - it is
the Intel management engine and other 3v1l stuff) and 1×4M (which we
flash, it is just the BIOS).

We flashed Tiago's full ROM with a ME replacement. I can assert his
computer is freer than mine :-]

I will help you flash whatever ROM you provide me with - So:

git clone --recursive https://review.coreboot.org/p/coreboot.git

Build a ROM, I will flash it. If it does not work, we will back up
your original ROM anyway, so you shall not get a brick.

Ideally.
