Part 2: The animation you suggest would take too much time; at least 3 seconds per keyword (so that it don't move too fast and can be read properly). I would go with something simple like this: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/21510751/test.mov 3. Part 3: Again, it can be done simpler. I would suggest a fade in with the logo and accompanying text. 4. Re: [Debconf-team] [Debconf11-localteam] Internet connection
Yes, but I wasn't expecting you to be the one doing this. :) Otherwise it doesn't get done, trust me I'd love if it any different then this. Normally for an internet connection to be made, you have to arrange a date with the ISP and/or phone company some time in advance. I realise this may be easier because mtel are a sponsor, but it's still polite to arrange a fixed date with them, not phone up and say we need this *now*. Who ever said Mtel is sponsor for our internet? From very beginning we said SARNET is our internet provider, over here things don't change once they are agreed: http://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf11/BanjaLuka#Network_connectivity_and_technicalities I know this need to be done, by I haven't got to contact them but I'm planning to do that before getting to Banja Luka. I expected one of the local volunteers (not you for everything) to go to Banski Dvor on the arranged date, watch the work happen, and then check the connection -- I think someone even volunteered for this while we were visiting? Yea, I think it's going to be a same procedure as if Mtel was doing it. I don't wanna call local team useless (I'm close tho) but who is eligible for this kind of job? I don't know how feasible this option is, they tend to know very little details about things, I mean how many of them even know which rooms are even going to be used in Banski Dvors? Re: [Debconf-team] Hotels reservation details
This stupid behaviour must stop. DIVA has signed an agreement to follow instructions from Debian in spending money for DebConf, and that is how we need to proceed. Likewise, I'm not taking part in any sides any more now I'm just being a spectator. So let me remind you, yesterday Richard sent an email explaining how DebConf people slept in school halls on one occasion and how it all doesn't matter. And that we should spend as little money as possible. You were talking to Velimir and he was writing a list of things he needs to talk to DIVA about and questions, again I did not even look at that list. Today we're in DIVA, they talk during those =2 hrs I say 10 words in total, I was just watching. It's all settled it's all good, it's all clear. Velimir and I go out to lunch, 45mins later we read the email that's completely opposite of what was said yesterday when it comes to accommodation! Again, this is how I saw it all as a spectator nothing more, and what I see here is someone needs to get his story straight and stop accusing the other side. We're getting everything that was agreed before, except pools and shuttles. I'm most serious when I ask you this, what is the problem? Don't go into writing essays, clear and loud what is the problem? Yesterday I was the problem, today Velimir is the problem, I wonder who's next. Again I repeat, only doing by *your* requests. Re: [Debconf-team] DIVA contact info?
If Adnan doesnt come up with a real address, I'd send a query via http://diva.ba/?page_id=8 That is is the real address. Hey Richard, sorry I was meant to reply to this email right but it's been mayhem lately. Is there any way I could get the contact info for DIVA, or financial summaries of there? (financial summaries were part of the DIVA agreement, IIRC). Yes, asking them would be a step forward. I think some attendees may be paying to there, and if we can't know about that, we can't credit it to them. Also, it is pretty important to know if the one sponsor has paid yet - and if we'll be able to use that for our biggest expense, travel sponsorship. AFAIK and last time I asked no one has made any payments, again they are people to ask these kind of questions. You had also mentioned other local sponsors - are any of them giving money to DIVA we can use for our general expenses? This would be very good to know. The other day I had a meeting with them regarding this, they said they haven't received *any* money. Mtel has been invoiced but still didn't get money yet. With Dunav insurance we got the insurance in exchange for sponsorship but I still didn't get any replies to my email regarding this. RedBull, Coca Cola are quiet but I only got negative comments about them sponsoring DebConf so ... yea. Please do contact DIVA regarding this kind of questions as I'm trying to stay out of finances as much as I can. I could give you a phone number of the DIVA's president, but I don't know how much is she going to understand you, either way there will be a Translator during the conference. For awhile Minister and I thought it would be great if we could have Google in Banja Luka what this would mean is to have a lecture that's going to talk why Google uses Linux/Debian etc ... I found couple of interested Debian people that are Googlers and would do this talk, however both of them asked what the sponsorship options are. We would give them free accommodation/food, but since Debian is covering the travel reimbursement I was wondering what your stance is on this one? They are not asking to be paid for their lecture, just wondering what the sponsorship options are as they are obviously late for sponsored registration. One of the question that comes up is why are we supposed to pay their attendance fees, they are Google employees! It wasn't Google that said we want those guys there to promote our technologies, it is us that need their help, btw they would ask absence from their position during their visit. There are two interested people for this talk/lecture: Guido Trotter and Jesus Climent Guido would be able to stay until Tuesday (26th) while Jesus would be able to stay throughout the conference. Is Debian willing/able to sponsor travel for either of these? Let me know what you think, I think that talk has a low level of relevance for Debian, so I´m not in favor of making an exception and spending extra money on it. Re: [Debconf-team] Final numbers
I asked this question last night but no one answered. Now when you registered can you still register for sponsored accommodation? It should've been disabled but I'm asking because number keeps increasing and I don't see pro/corporate category get more attendees ... so I hope it was disabled Adnan On Wed, Jun 8, 2011 at 11:13 PM, Richard Darst r...@zgib.net wrote: Hi, DebConf12 team, take note. During our lunch with minister, he asked us when we could have the final numbers, after Moray Holger and I consulted we told him 3 to max 4 weeks. Three weeks mark is just today and I believe we still don't have what's called final numbers. If you think final numbers are this easy to come by, you misunderstand DebConf a bit. Hotels have a reason to be exact (and what I wanted to know about earlier). To do this, we have the reconfirmation process, to cap the number of sponsored people (and also help us establish our budget). After reconfirmation, we might still lose some sponsored people, or have their dates change. We might also have professional people register which we'd *try* to accommodate if we have the time, and the hotel will let us. As for total attendees, that is much more flakey. Lots will register, many won't show up. Even more will come for a day or two only. For the past few confs, my philosophy has been that the number of people requesting a room is a more accurate measure of the scale of a DebConf, since those are the ones you'll have around 24/7, and you know will come. If you take a look at http://rkd.zgib.net/http/debconf/registration-data.txt you'll see that we have something that could be our final number (444) which is fine but if you take a closer look at these numbers first thing you'll notice is our of these numbers 138 have not even selected what country they are coming from. Now, government, hotels and everybody is highly flexible but they want *exact* numbers, and we're all but being exact right now. If anything I want exact numbers, in a week or two we'll have press release with the president and I wan't to be able to tell him exact number of who's coming. These numbers mean a whole lot to us, for As for this kind of thing, they won't know anything exact. For press release purposes, if they want something exact then report what's on the list and pretend it's exact. Might be better to say more than 400 people or whatever. example visas, our attendees who have visa problems will be granted visas upon arrival to our country, how can they be given a visa if they haven't even set which country they are coming from? Also Arrival dates are pretty empty. How are we supposed to even send those shuttles if we don't even have these dates? Same case with Tshirts and numerous other things. Wouldn't they get a visa by showing the border guard their passport? If they need visa help, they would have contacted visa@ and that's fine. Or are you thinking they _have_ to be on your list to get into the country? About the shuttles, yes, and that's what we were trying to say about waiting for registration dates. *Dates* are only really required for people staying in hotels, and how would we know what airport they are coming from, or even _if_ they are coming from an airport? Perhaps the wiki pages are a better idea? On wiki I wrote about accommodation (http://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf11/Accommodation) I put how much beds we'll get from each hotel, when I spoke to director of Bosna I told him there will be 60 to 80 people in first week, now according to our numbers there will be 120. This is fine, but as long as it's not some random people signing up for DebCamp just like that. I personally know couple of Bosnians that registered for DebCamp because they said why not? In the end number of people is not a problem, none of it is, but all we need is exact numbers so I know how to deal with each situation. IE, for hotel it makes a huge difference if it's 60 or 120 people in first week, and for government it also makes a huge difference as it's a difference between ~100k km. Well I'd like to consult with you before we have this sent out. First of all I'd like to see a line that will say to tidy up your registration details, from country you're coming from and etc ... So besides reconfirmation this ends up as data sanitation process as well. Tomorrow I'm having a meeting with DIVA to discuss final numbers and we'll be stuck in rut again. I'd like for this reconfirmation to be sent asap, but then again I wouldn't like to be sent too early so data from reconfirmations turn irrelevant. My only worry is that accommodation we have right now won't be enough (http://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf11/Accommodation) In case we need more accommodation now it wouldn't be a problem to find more space, but after July 3rd it might. It's hard to believe such chaos rose from Mtel's good intentions. Mtel is *only* going to give you a SIM card and what you get with it is phone number and XX minutes so you can talk to other people without them charging you and XX mb of data transfer (3g). You're not gonna get the actual handsets. They'll give it to us, it's up to you if you want to take it or not. You won't give any personal information once you get the SIM card, there are no obligations, it's just for you to be able to talk to each other via phone while you're here, that's it. Once you used all the data and calling minutes, you're out you can throw the SIM away. No contracts no nothing. They got onto this idea after DebConf11 trailer that is after Moray's and Holger's visit after discussion was started where you could get a phone number and some calling minutes. This discussion got to their CEO and in the end they decided they could give you away these phone numbers for free. This was their nice gesture, and if they heard about this whole topic and what was discussed in it they would prolly pull back the offer. I don't know if you can understand it or not, but no one is trying to impose something on you, no one is trying to sell anything you don't wanna buy, in plain English no one is trying to screw you over. Government, sponsors, local team and I are giving our best to provide you with experience you won't forget, but it seems to me the more good things we do you only take the wrong way. Get it into your head, we're not some banana country, we're on our way to make it into EU. One of the goals of DebConf11 is to break these stereotypes and whatever else it is. Moray and Holger were here, please ask them I'm sure they got here with certain level of prejudice, but ask them with what opinion and thought did they leave? In meantime do the reality check and just ... chillax. You have no idea how hard it's to work with unneeded situations like this one. Re: [Debconf-team] [Debconf-discuss] Zagreb -- Banja Luka
This topic is getting hard to follow especially since I'm extremely short of time ATM. @Ian and everybody else, I'll just tell you this, I'm in Zagreb now and today I talked to some of leading people from HULK (Croatian LUG) and told them about our Zagreb Banja Luka transportation plans. Even if it's only one person they would be glad to help us out, thus meaning they could perhaps greet you at the airport and then take you to the bus station and help you get what you need. Or take you to our bus/shuttle meeting point or whatever you need help with. So the moral of what I just said is please don't panic, we have everything under control and whoever you are you or whenever you arrive you won't be left by yourself. @debconf-team We should just make sure that Arrival/Departure page is concise and has all the data/info that's needed, according from data we pull out from Penta or letting the attendees to input these details by themselves. That's my plan. @everybody, again please just don't panic :) Adnan On Tue, May 17, 2011 at 3:59 PM, Ian Jackson ijack...@chiark.greenend.org.uk wrote: vedran writes (Re: [Debconf-discuss] Zagreb -- Banja Luka): We understand your concerns but from our perspective things doesn't look so disorganized. Yes there is still a lot of missing points but at least there are well defined general guidelines about travel. Zagreb -- Banja Luka are very well connected with buses so even if you come to Zagreb without any preparation, you would not have any difficulty comming to Banja Luka. (Although i believe you will have all necessary guidelines on time.) Just please don't make panic. This is precisely the kind of response that I was complaining about. What people need is INFORMATION, not reassurance. Those flying into Zagreb need to know when they book flights (which ideally would be done a month or two ago) that they have a good plan for what they will do on arrival in Zagreb. That means the kind of detailed information about what and how I described in my previous email. Telling people there is a bus is not sufficient. We need detailed information about times, reliability, buying tickets, where to catch the bus, directions to the bus station or stops, how to know when to get off, who will speak which languages, etc. Those who are arriving late at night need recommendations for where to stay. Instead, here we have another message telling us don't worry and don't make panic. If you _provided the information_ people needed, no-one would be worried. Saying it's all fine but _not_ providing that information tells us not only is it not organised, but the people who would be organising it don't understand the problem. Ie, when you say it's all fine we see that there is a big problem. That means that people who aren't confident in their ability to deal with these kind of issues by themselves simply won't come to Debconf. Also, today Adnan presented DebConf11 organization at ODRS/CLUC event in Zagreb (www.dorscluc.org) and invited more more people to join travel team and help with those issues in case you are coming via Zagreb. People ware very interested in DebConf11 today so i have no doubt there will be some volunteers from Zagreb helping about this issue. Where are the local team for Banja Luka in this conversation ? Re: [Debconf-team] [Debconf-discuss] Zagreb -- Banja Luka
Ian, Once again you have provided reassurance rather than information. This is, as I say, very UN-reassuring. Did you even read what I wrote ? No I haven't, last email I read was Josips which was 18 hours ago. I'd like to apologize for this as I tend not to give out any information or answers before previously really devouring what I'm about to say. It's just that I was very tired (still am but got ~30min nap) as after UDS I came here to Zagreb for another event and was just excited about sharing news regarding their help offer. Once again I apologize for my negligent act. It is that after I read your last email that I got onto a conclusion what we need to do, but before anything let me say couple of things. Where are the local team for Banja Luka in this conversation ? Very good question, and this goes together with Holgers statement that local team is very unorganized. I have to agree with him on it, there's tons of volunteers and people who offered their help and all, but once it comes to actually helping out with topics they just don't do anything. Why, I have no idea it fascinates me as it might fascinate you as well. In beginning there was basically only me who was doing all the work, later on more good people joined and started helping out I won't be naming anybody as their work is evidently seen on lists and so on. That's why I think Moray's and Holger's visit is more then important and will only help us in future process before few of us doing work break under our own weight. I was/am planning to send an email to local mailing list, telling them about Moray's and Holger's arrival as I'm pretty sure most of them are not even aware they are even coming. Now I'm not just trolling my own team, what I'm doing here is criticize it, as I don't want to close my eyes in front of problems that really do exist and all of this will lead to us eventually solving it. I have a theory why the situation is like it is, and it pulls some financial factors along the way so I'd rather explain it to Moray and Holger between our own 6 eyes. And after the talks we have with them situation is going to improve. Furthermore, instead of giving you any reassurance I'd like to say that I agree with you. I remember my trip to DC9 and to be honest it was pain, after airplane landed it was going through Madrid metro with basically no body speaking English, and when I was thinking that last train has left and when I was thinking of staying in some hotel in Madrid for a night that I *literally* was running after last train and hopping on to it. No ticket no nothing due to language barriers. Taking that train to Caceres is whole another story which doesn't matter for this topic, but it was all due to that there wasn't enough logistical data. Enough said. If I only had information it would've been all fine, but if I had this kind of reassurance we're offering I'd be more then happy. Now, I'd like to just point out that getting to Banja Luka is any way as it was getting to Caceres; but this is where my sentence will end as I'll apparently start doing my reassurance speech again. Lets do this, instead of having local buses/so on as our backup option besides our own organized buses/shuttles lets use HULK and hopefully help of local team in Bosnia to get all possible information one would need to get to Banja Luka on his own. Only thing that I can guarantee you is that this information will be online by the end of month; why we haven't done this before, well we thought there wasn't need for one such thing as you're able to find it all pretty much online on websites we have already shown and we're in middle of Europe and not in middle of some other continent or whatever. Since we have buses/shuttles we just thought it would be easier to assign X number of shuttles to go to Y places at Z time/s. When would we say where each shuttle/bus will be where would be all said in its time, that is once its time to release one such information, it can't turn to morning if night didn't come before that. Dependencies, and we still haven't even finished registrations. Now, is that enough INFORMATION for you? Ok, this is what I came up with. To have this sent to Linux Journal so we could see it in their next months release/website/whatever. Are these numbers acceptable? Next, is it worth letting DIVA accept payments from attendees (primarily useful for local attendees)? This would only really be necessary if people wanted to pay a professional fee for accom (otherwise they could pay on site), and if they couldn't wire money to FFIS or pay to SPI. Overall, keeping more money at FFIS/SPI is preferred, so if we can skip having DIVA take money, that's not bad. - Richard -- | Richard Darst - rkd@ - boltzmann: up 636 days, 12:44 | http://rkd.zgib.net - pgp 0xBD356740 | Ye shall know the truth and -- the truth shall make you free ___ Debconf-team mailing list Debconf-team@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-team ___ Debconf-team mailing list Debconf-team@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-team ___ Debconf-team mailing list Debconf-team@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-team
[Debconf-team] DebConf11 April 20th update
What happened yesterday couldn't even fit in a novel, so I'll try to make this as short as possible. Yesterday I was literally on my feet for 15 hours, but it was one of the greatest days for DebConf11. Went to Banja Luka, went to many places, talked with many people, but my main reason for going to Banja Luka yesterday was that our Minister for Technology and Science Jasmin Komic who's nominated for this years Nobel Price for Peace was along with couple of other professors releasing their statistical encyclopedia. Among attendees, besides myself being present along with many respected guest, professors there was whole governmental core of Republika Srpska, including President, Prime Minister and others. To make things more interesting, this event was held in Banski Dvor in one of the assembly rooms where I was planning for us to have our BOFs :) Whole event was just wonderful, talks during the same were also awesome, in one of the professors addressing even we were indirectly mentioned in a sense how scientific significance is growing, especially with upcoming events :) President Milorad Dodik received an award, as he stood by this project and supported it from very beginning, I thought this was incredibly nice gesture, and that we should do the same thing on DebConf. Kilt anyone? After event President was heading to another event, as all others were heading to the official dinner, but I got to talk to him before he left. We talked about DebConf and how it was all going, later on dinner I talked to Minister as on numerous occasions he would approach me/us (I was there with DIVA president) and ask if I talked to this and that person regarding this and that and so on ... as I started of with gibberish in short this is the situation. I mentioned couple of situations, for example t-shirts, shuttles and so on, and how DebConf budget is and so on. For this reason, Government has decided that they will take care of all the conference costs, except the travel costs, basically I was told to use my imagination if I wish, just for this to be best DebConf ever. All they want from Debian is to bring the attendees, the more the better. As besides having the best shirts, shuttles and so on, in case we need more accommodation for our attendees we'll get more hotels. I also talked about concert I was planning to have for DebConf attendees/wine cheese party and as well official dinner. After we got this kind of green light from government, I think these three will just blow your mind. Besides this daytrip is getting paid, as some won't go to rafting, they'll get another option to go to, again all sponsored by government. Government in this case, isn't just sponsor which wants to appear under sponsors list, they really allowed me all the resources to make this happen, *they* want this to happen. Some might ask why as reason is pretty self elaborate, the better this conference is, the better picture of government you get, the better government the more investments and new business you get. Of course, why do they sponsor event like this on so much, this is (semi) scientific event with new people talking about new technologies and why should the same be used, this puts us (Bosnia) in center of this whole region during this event. For NYC, DebConf isn't much of an event as all the grounds for this country have been set up and so on, we're still developing and want to develop in the best way possible, so I say let's make it happen. For DebConf global team, which I'm also part of, I suggest we work on getting as much sponsorships as we can, I'm also planning to collect local ones next week as I'll be in Banja Luka again next week. We'll use all this sponsorship money to pay for travel reimbursements, we get as much attendees to get here as possible, as the bigger this conference is the better. All the surplus that's left, goes to Debian. We get to have on of best DebConf's so far, we make ourselves happy, we make Government happy and we all walk out of this as happy as we can be :) In case of grammatical errors and typos, it's all due to the excitement, so do pardon me. What else can I say beside DebConf11 FTW :) Adnan ___ Debconf-team mailing list Debconf-team@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-team

Re: [Debconf-team] Planning arrival/departure buses
Which locations would you all like buses to come from? I was thinking for it to be Zagreb airport Banja Luka as Zagreb has more budgets flights and it's actually quicker to come to Banja Luka via Zagreb. We could also arrange them to leave from Sarajevo airport as well. Unofficially I heard that Serbian LUG wants to organize transportation from Belgrade to Banja Luka, I offered our help in realizing this idea. What dates/times? I've been saying it this for 20x time now, we should have some kind of arrival/departure list (after the registrations) and in the peak time frame when everyone's coming have the most buses sent and that's kinda it. And roughly how much will it cost? We can't have this number now as we don't know how many people/buses we're talking about. Remember, attendees arrive at all sorts of times, so if anything, we will probably need to focus only on the most common arrival/departure times - and announce that. Yep, that was the original plan. Damyan, It would be quite expensive, though. If the shirt is 60cm by 70cm this makes 0.4m² × 35€/m² = 14€ only for printing the front. First, we need to decide if we print in Mexico (as is the tradition) or we use a local supplier/printer. For this we need to compare prices/quality of both variants. We need someone local to get quote for this (200-400 t-shirts of various base colors), and we need someone to ask Gabby for the same (and if she is willing to drive this again). About the quality, we all have experience with .mx shirts. We need someone local to compare them with what is available locally. We need to decide on colors :) The orga shirt is traditionally black, which leaves video team, volunteer and attendee shirts. This should wait until we choose .mx or local printer and get the possible colors. Next, we need people to prepare t-shirt design (front) and lay out sponsor logos (back). In some European countries there are some holidays in the last 2 weeks of April (it changes a lot in every country) and some people may forget to register or being unable to do so, due to the holidays. Re: [Debconf-team] DebConf GLOBAL team - Report
Ok, but... Where will people have to state they are willing to share a bed with $nextguy, in the hotel registration itself? I don't expect this option to be very popular :( Exactly, that's why I want to finish with hotel reservation, as this is not going to be a popular option we can just let people be by themselves in the room. Is there currently an option of selecting something along the line I want to be alone in room? Re: [Debconf-team] Registration/CFP text + deadlines (please review)
Well the confusion may be avoided by not talking about closing deadlines of something that still *hasn't* even been opened. Please understand our confusion as eagerness of waiting to finally see registrations being open. Regarding closing both things together, I agree on that as it's way easier to remember. Now let me try quoting myself right this time My ideas for deadlines: Sponsored registration: May 1 Paper deadline: May 15 or June 1 Way too early. Registrations are still not open and closing them 24 from now ... too close. May 15th is somewhat ok if you ask me. Does anyone know the (at least approximate one) average of the days DebConf registrations remain open for? I'm not trying to rush anything, but we need to know who's going to come, especially if they need help acquiring a Visa or have some other issues that require our help. We are talking about *deadlines*. Could you all please avoid the top-posting and wrong-quoting? It helps to avoid this kind of misunderstandings.
