DC24 travel budget request for core videoteam
Dear DebConf team (and DPL!), The DebConf videoteam met last Friday and we agreed on the following budget request for travel, food and accommodation for the core videoteam. Here is what we're asking (the info is also on the wiki [1]): == | -- Name -- | --- Travel --- | --- Accommodation --- | -- Food -- | | Louis-Philippe Véronneau | 2500 USD | Yes | Yes | | Carl Karsten | 2500 USD | Yes | Yes | | Kyle Robbertze | 2200 USD | Yes | Yes | | Kurt Roeckx | 2500 EUR | No| Yes | | Kiran S Kunjumon | 1200 EUR | Yes | Yes | | NicolasDandrimont| 2000 EUR | Yes | Yes | == Total: 7200 USD + 5700 EUR We'll also need some budget for the videoteam shipping expenses from Paris, but we don't have a good estimate for this for now. Call for core videoteam members for DebConf24
Hi, We've started preparing for the upcoming DebConf24, which will take place in Busan, South Korea, from Sunday July 28th to Sunday August 4th 2024. DebCamp will be held from Sunday July 21st to Saturday July 27th 2024 [1]. If you are planning to go to DC24 and want to join the core videoteam (with great powers comes great responsibilities...), please reach out! As always, Debian can provide travel, accommodation and food sponsorship for core videoteam members if requested. If you plan to ask for sponsorship, please fill out the following page on the Debian wiki [2]. Note the deadline to ask for videoteam core sponsorship is April 12th, which happens to be our next meeting :) More info on that in the other email I just sent to the debconf-video mailing list. Hi! Thanks for reaching out. I won't be there, but I wanted to point out this helpful page I wrote a while ago: https://debconf-video-team.pages.debian.net/docs/working_with_videoteam.html When/If people here decide they'll be available for the event, going through the venue checklist would be super appreciated! I would also highly recommend you reach out on #debconf-team (or on their ML) to get them to spin you up a "MiniDebConf in a box" instance. We can manage the technical side (although it's a hassle...), but they just aren't interesting. People don't go to DebConf to sit in a room and watch someone on a screen. The result is very low audience participation compared to other talks and an overall feeling of disengagement that isn't great for anyone. Questions from the videoteam for DC21
Hello Team people! The Videoteam has had its first meeting in a while and we've started planning for DC21. From now on, we'll have bi-weekly meetings on Thursdays, the next meeting being on 2021-04-29 @ 18:00 UTC. To help us plan ahead, we have two questions we'd like you to answer: 1. How many concurrent tracks should we plan for? DC20 had a single official track and an ad-hoc one. That seemed to work well, but you might have more ambitious plans for DC21. 2. When is DC21 going to be? Terceiro's last email said "during the 3rd quarter of 2021", but that's not very precise... Having something clearer would help us build our work calendar and let us manage our expectations. For example, some projects might not be feasible for a conf in early July, and others might be for one in late Sept. I understand you might not have an answer to these questions at the moment. If not, giving us an estimate of when you will would be appreciated. Please note we're likely to re-use the same time slot for future meetings. https://storm.debian.net/shared/6aYHi7F2Ivj_anLjPC7E4nGqvQGsgN4JTWufsZd0WkE You have until Sunday April 11th at 23:59 UTC to reply to the poll. I'll send the official announcement shortly after. Meanwhile, have a look at the draft agenda: http://deb.li/oNCD It's really not complete, but my brain is elsewhere today... The DebConf Video Team Needs YOU
DebConf relies on volunteers to record and stream videos. Each and every talk given at DebConf this year needs two video volunteers, namely: * a Talkmeister (to introduce the talks and manage Q&A) * a Director (Video Mixer) These tasks are documented in detail in the Video Team's online documentation [1]. We need your help to do this work. We'll teach you how to do all of these tasks, but rest assured, it's far simpler than compiling QT6. Three training sessions will be held on Saturday August 22nd on Jitsi [2], at 11:30-12:30 UTC, 16:00-17:00 UTC and 23:00-00:00 UTC. Please register on the wiki if you plan to attend a training session [3]. You can volunteer for a talk on the DebConf20 website [4]. If you can, please register for talks in advance to help us plan accordingly. Helping the Video Team can be a great way to contribute to the conference and listen to talks at the same time. Come join us, we don't bite! "Retiring" from DebConf
Hey folks, I had been waiting for DebConf19's end to send this email. For lack of a better word, I'm "retiring" from all my DebConf involvement. I can't picture myself participating in a conference taking place in Israel, much less helping organise one there. Against the continued disregard for the rights of the Palestinian people, I feel the only power I have as an individual living in North America is to heed the call of the BDS movement [1]. I hadn't been doing a lot of orga stuff lately anyway and I did little work on the DebConf Sponsors team this year. I'm mainly stepping down from my coordination tasks in the DebConf Videoteam. Someone else will have to organise meetings and events, craft agendas and keep track of the team's deadlines from now on :) As a result, I've quit a bunch of DebConf mailing lists, RT tracker queues, Salsa groups and IRC channels. I've also asked DSA to remove me from *@debconf.org* aliases. I'll still lurk in the DebConf Videoteam IRC channel and on the mailing list, but it saddens me to say I will not be doing any concrete work for the videoteam this year, or at least nothing related to DC20. I want to thank all the people that have helped organise DebConfs in the past few years, and in particular the incredible folks part of the videoteam. Thanks for the amazing ride this has been. I've learned and grew a lot as a person since Heidelberg and DC15. More importantly, I've had a lot of fun. I sincerely hope one day we'll all get to see peace in Palestine and Israel. Semi-automated sync to vittoria -- SSH key management
Hi! I'm following up on issue #13 in our ansible bug tracker [1] about setting up a semi-automated sync to vittoria. During confs and mini-confs, we need to be able to sync files from the voctomix (live video mixer) machines in the rooms to Vittoria. Currently, the way we do it is that a member of the videoteam group adds temporary SSH keys to their Debian account for that machine. What we would like to do is to be able to add restricted SSH keys, allowed to access the sreview user, in the form of: -- command="/srv/sreview.debian.org/home/bin/rrsync -wo /srv/sreview.debian.org/input",no-agent-forwarding,no-port-forwarding,no-pty,no-user-rc,no-X11-forwarding ssh-rsa B[...]KYl videoteam@voctomixXY -- The actual sync is done via a CLI script (which is a basic rsync wrapper) that can be found here [2]. The rrsync script is directly gunzipped from rsync's documentation. It seems that 1 year ago when Wouter approached DSA on IRC, you seemed open to the ideas as long as the authorized keys changes were done through a command line interface rather than through a webinterface. Modifying the authorized_keys file would be done manually by a member of the team at the beginning of each conference. Cheers! Ccing Jérémy Lecour from Evolix who's working hard on making the mini-conf happen. For brevity's sake, here's the TL;DR: 1. If possible, we would like to have an URL to a machine-readable version of the schedule so that our reviewing system can be auto-updated 2. Setting sReview for the Marseille and the Hamburg mini-confs
Hey Wouter, We haven't heard from you in a while! I hope you're settling well in South Africa and are enjoying the weather there :D I'm writing to you to talk about the coming Marseille and Hamburg mini-confs. I was wondering if you could setup sReview for us so that we can publish the videos quickly. The Marseille mini-conf will take place on May 25-26th. You can find the current schedule here [1]. The Hamburg mini-conf will take place on June 8-9th. The schedule hasn't been published yet, but should be in the coming weeks. Happy to talk about this over mail, but if you have time to drop in, our next IRC meeting will be Tuesday May 7th from 18:00 to 19:00 UTC. Cheers! Mini-DebConf Marseille -- videoteam sprint
Hey Gregory! Turns out a few people of the videoteam will make it to the Marseille Mini-conf. At the moment 4 people confirmed, but another person is also thinking about coming. If possible, we'd like a space where we can sprint before the event. It doesn't have to be very big as we won't be unpacking the cameras there, but somewhere not too far from the mini-conf venue with an internet access would be nice. Reducing streaming latency
Hey Wookey! This was "Re: Debconf20 will be in...". Moving the thread to debconf-video :D On 19-03-20 17 h 44, Wookey wrote: > We were well ahead of the trend in videoing all talks+questions > effectively. I think we should see what we can do to use technology to > make effective remote interaction work. Currently there is too much > lag on outgoing video (~30seconds?) Maybe some other members of the DebConf Videoteam can chime in to correct me if I'm wrong, but: 1. At most DebConfs, we are dependent on the existing networking infrastructure. The stack the venues run inevitably creates overheads. 2. Having video at all at DebConfs is already quite a feat. We often get the rooms very little time in advance and prefer to focus our energy into making sure the sound is good and that videos are mixed, recorded and streamed somewhere. That doesn't mean we don't care about creating a better experience for remote attendees, but we're already struggling to make the current stack work. Any new solution needs either to decrease the current work to bring up the stack or at least to not have any impacts on it. 3. Some of the delay is attributable to our live video mixing setup that uses voctomix and gstreamer. Voctomix needs quite beefy machines to run and processing three inputs (2 cameras + speaker's laptop) isn't an easy task. Often, we struggle to find machines as powerful as we'd like. IIRC, the feed out of voctomix easily has a good 3-5 seconds delay already. If you can point us to other projects using a voctomix stack (CCC VOC, LCA, etc.) that have worked on latency issues, it would be a nice pointer for us. If you want to have a look at voctomix's performance, I'm sure a lot of people would benefit from it. I guess [1] would be a good place to start. 4. Our streaming setup is documented here [2]. As you can see, we are using a local streaming frontend and multiple geolocated mirrors for performance reasons. Nicolas knows better, but this is bound to create delays. We are also processing the videos with FFMPEG to downsample them, as some remote attendees don't always have a very good internet connection. Again, more delays. Finally, we are using buffers to make the videos watchable. Without buffers, streamed videos can get choppy. Again, not an expert on this, but maybe something in our nginx-rtmp configuration could be tweaked? If you want to have a look at it, it's all here [3] and here [4]. > and no incoming video/audio, so it's pretty-much broadcast-only. I don't have a good solution to this. If you can point us to something that's easy to implement and that does not require tons of extra gear or a shitton more work to setup, I'm sure we would be interested. Our current audio schemas can be found here [5]. If you want to follow-up on any of this, I think the best thing to do would be to create a new issue on our bug tracker [6]. Again, it's not that we don't care, more that we don't have enough time to do everything we would like to :D As you can see, everything we do (docs, code, etc.) is on Salsa, so feel free to tinker and send us patches if you have some spare time. I think asking that question was reasonable. As Paulo told us, the other events (FTSL, FISL and Latinoware) don't have any money. That answer satisfies me. If the other conferences were large corporate conferences with tons of money I think it would have been fair to ask them for a share. Apparently, this is not the case. As for a "Brazil" branch of the Videoteam, I don't think anyone here is against the idea. Having our setup replicated by others is why we are using tools like Ansible and why we write documentation. I'm happy Paulo is coming to the next video sprint near FOSDEM as it will be the occasion to show him a bunch of stuff. I'm also positive DebConf19 will help others learn how our setup works. 0/ During our last meeting [1], people seemed open to the idea of holding a videoteam sprint around FOSDEM. As such, we were discussing the possibility of borrowing/renting the Linux Belgium space in Diegem [2] the team used last year. Do you think you could ask them if we can make that happen? At the moment, dates are not very clear but I assume our goal would be the week prior or the week after the FOSDEM weekend. Cheers! Re: debconf recordings as feed
I think the real fix would be to have a proper frontend to our video archive. Autumn sprint -- any ideas?
Hello folks! DebConf18 is now somewhat over and most of us are back at home now. Time to plan ahead! We normally held our Autumn sprint during the Cambridge mini-conf, but it seems there won't be one this year (blame renovations at ARM). Are you still interested in having a sprint somewhere? I'm not 100% certain I can make it if it happens in $COUNTRY, but I'd be happy to participate remotely if something happens. I do have some free time this winter though, so if people are interested we can try to have a winter sprint in Montreal. -- ,''`. : :' : Louis-Philippe Véronneau `. `'` po...@debian.org / veronneau.org `- signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

We had to reduce the preview quality a lot since we were loosing frame and were experiencing audio desync because of a high CPU usage. I think the main difference between our setups is we have a 2nd camera and thus 3 sources. From our tests the linux kernel patches for Specter (KPTI) also has a large impact. >>> * Cameras (borrowed from the university >>> What model? >>> they should have balanced audio in, and SDI or HDMI output. >> >> SDI is preferable to HDMI, since you'll have to use HDMI extenders if >> you go with HDMI. > > I use HDMI, and I don't use extenders. Ours are Blackmagic Decklink Mini Recorder and cost around 150USD/card. It might also be a good idea to think about getting tally lights [1]. We bought serial PCI-e cards for our mixing computers and pair those with serial to ethernet adapters and a serial led at the end. In theory, the 'Hardware' section of our documentation [2] lists everything you need. Hamburg Mini-DC: microphones for the videoteam
Hey Holger! The videoteam decided that we would not be able to buy a new audio kit in time for the Hamburg Mini-DC. As you already know, our microphones are slowly dying and we are not sure they'll be reliable enough to use them in a satisfactory way during the conference. We would thus need to borrow/rent a microphone kit. Maybe the CCC VOC could lend us one? We need: * 2 x wireless handheld microphones * 2 x wireless headset microphones (lapels can work, be we prefer headsets) * the wireless receiver to go with the mics We have cables and a mixing desk, so we won't need those. Thanks! -- ,''`. : :' : Louis-Philippe Véronneau `. `'` po...@debian.org / veronneau.org `- signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature
Debian RT: Redirect https://video.debconf.org to https://debconf-video-team.pages.debian.net/docs
Hi! As you may know, the DebConf videoteam is using the static hosting functions on salsa.debian.org for its documentation: https://debconf-video-team.pages.debian.net/docs/ Now that wildcard certificates are available on LE and that *.pages.debian.net has a valid TLS certificate, we would like to request a redirection from https://video.debconf.org to https://debconf-video-team.pages.debian.net/docs. Since we also use this website for the mini-confs as a webui for our stream, it would be very nice to have a convenient URL to publicise. It seems this requires DSA to setup an Apache VHost somewhere to do this redirection. Is this something you could do?
