So, I went ahead and uploaded the package. But please, members of a11y

if you find none). Best would be to use reportbug gnome-orca.
As for Orca, it seems to work like a charm. I just tested a test page in
Firefox and the experience was wonderful. Thanks for the packaging work and to
the direct upgrade to 3.10.

speech-dispatcher: speaks with high pitch capitaized words

2014-02-24 Thread Sebastian Humenda
Hello,

my speech-dispatcher speaks every word starting with a capital letter completely
with high pitch. I have set:

DefaultCapLetRecognition none

I have tested it with spd-say and Orca and it occurs in both. For error tracing,
I attach the speechd.conf. Has anybody an idea why this happens?

Thanks!

Hi,

it would be helpful to try what's available in unstable:

http://ftp.fr.debian.org/debian/dists/sid/main/installer-amd64/20140208/images/

so that we can spot whether that's a regression over the past few days,
or whether the regression was in the uploaded debian-installer package
already.

I seem to recall speech synthesis was OK when I uploaded the images,
which I tested on amd64. I haven't checked the dailies yet.

(It would also help to mention which exact image you're using, cdrom,
netboot, etc.)

Thank you very much for your quick and helpful reply. I tried the
following image and speech as well as braille worked.
http://ftp.fr.debian.org/debian/dists/sid/main/installer-amd64/20140208/images/netboot/mini.iso
The image that I tried this morning where speech was not working is
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/amd64/iso-cd/debian-testing-amd64-netinst.iso
The date from this iso was 2014-02-24 05:04 as I tried a newer build
from today when I did the testing in my second message. IF there is any
more info that I could provide that would be helpful let me know.

I apologize for this mix up. The working iso was actually
http://ftp.fr.debian.org/debian/dists/sid/main/installer-amd64/20140208/images/netboot/gtk/mini.iso.
I read somewhere that speech was only on the gtk cd's which is why I
used that image although I could be wrong about this as I read it a
while ago and things might have changed.

Simply see the official Debian Installer documentation:

It really is the gtk images. By space constraints design, actually.

The issue you reported may be related to differing espeak versions, I'm
having a look.

I did some testing of the daily builds from d-i.debian.org. It appears
that the first one that is broken as far as speech is concerned is
http://d-i.debian.org/daily-images/amd64/20140209-00:16/netboot/gtk/mini.iso
I hope this might help narrow down where the bug was introduced. One
thing that I also noticed is that a few of the gtk images before this
one failed to build, however, the last successful build before the
failed builds did have working speech.

Orca, gdm3 and gnome desktop: updates

2014-02-24 Thread Germano Carella
Hi,

I disabled definitively gdm3, 'cause orca is unable to start.

I tried all things, all commands I found on internet, but anything appens;
orca is silent.

Finally, I reinstalled gnome-desktop-environment, uninstalled gdm3 and
purged pulseaudio, 'cause speech-dispatcher works fine with alsa, but with
pulseaudio crashes continuously.

The problem is that when I upgrade, pulseaudio is installed again. it's a
problem!

Temporary solution is that I login in text-mode and, when logged, I start x.
There is the only way I found to start gnome session.

works fine here.

The situation where we have to occasionally rebuild espeakup due to
new upstream versions of espeak is clearly far from ideal, and I'm
  making another clone for that.

I'm going to assume the issue is that we have a weak Depends:
espeak-data-udeb (from src:espeak) in espeakup-udeb (from src:espeakup).
If that's correct, why not just make it a stronger Depends, using
something like:

  Depends: espeak-data-udeb (= uv), espeak-data-udeb ( uv-next)

where uv is espeak's upstream version, and uv-next the next one?

Yes. I've had a look, and it's not completely trivial: we used to just
statically link espeak, portaudio, jack, and sonic into espeakup. Since
it's espeak which needs portaudio+jack+sonic, making espeak linked
dynamically means portaudio+sonic have to be linked dynamically too,
i.e. yet two new udebs (jack can be disabled in portaudio build). Is
that fine with debian-boot? I expect the size increase to be something
like a few 100KiB, on the gtk image.

Before considering size increase, I'd like to better grasp the issue
we're trying to solve.

Mraw,
KiBi.

That would indeed catch the issue, and clearly point out that a rebuild
is needed.

Well, it's not necessarily only about just catching the versioned
dependency, but also that this is just an example of the bad
consequences of linking things statically. espeakup hasn't been uploaded
for a year, meaning the installer didn't get the latest fixes from
espeak and portaudio in the meanwhile.

Samuel
