The only way to update a live CD is to install from it.

Then you can update.

But as you said "the point is MOOT".

Glenn,

You said "Yeah, I got it to boot up but I couldn't get into it, and I
got no guidance
on upgrading it, so it was a non-starter.".

If you're talking about Vinux 2.1 Debian CLI (we talked about the
Debian and the Ubuntu versions of Vinux, so I don't know which you are
referring to) it opens up talking with instructions.

Vinux 2.1 is the best documented distro I've ever seen.
When it boots, it beeps, but do nothing, just wait 40 seconds, then
the prompt will appear. There is writing on the screen that doesn't
speak.

The writing just says "type h" for help.
If you type "h" at the prompt, an amazing document of help appears.

Did you get that far, Glenn?

Re: Old Debian and Starting A Service

2023-06-03 Thread K0LNY

David,
It booted and spoke with the prompt of vinux.
I got the IP address it was using, but I couldn't get it to allow an SSH
session.

It would not update and I didn't know how to upgrade it.
The next time I rebooted it, it wouldn't boot, so I scrapped it.
I couldn't find any on-line documentation on it.

Yeah, I got it to boot up, but I couldn't get into it, and I got no guidance
on upgrading it, so it was a non-starter.

Anyway, I got Debian 11.7 installed, I just have to set up the WIFI again.
Last time I did this, it was on the same i386 machine, but on a 32 gb SD
card in the card slot.
I wanted to put a good working image on the internal 4 GB SSD and then make
an image of it, so I can restore it if I need to.

Vinux 2.1 CLI Max is based on Lenny Debian 5.0.10, it's a x686 32bit
system. Works fine here.

Vinux 3 and later are all based on Ubuntu and are (sadly) Graphic User
Interface. They have the Command Line Interface of course, but they
have a GUI already installed.

Hi,
I thought I'd give this old Vinux 2.1 CLI a go on the Asus 701, to see if
I can upgrade it little by little.

I have been looking for older Debian commands to start SSH.
I tried to apt-get install SSH, and it said it is already running the
latest, which is the latest for it's package, which I don't know is Debian
2.1, because it's Vinux 2.1.

But it does not know systemd or systemctl.
So I don't know how to get the service running.
It seems to have no WIFI, but I tried to find its IP address with
hostname -I
and it was before the capitol I was used, so I found the IP with a small
I.

But the connection is still refused.
I tried to update, and it said it is updated already.
I also don't know the upgrade command for older Debian.
So if anyone remembers, thanks for any info.

Yes, that's the problem we are all having - all of us that want just
CLI - are having.

No networking after installation.

That's why I recommended Vinux Debian CLI - but it will not install
for you for some reason. It works on my computers.
I even have it working on a USB stick with Ventoy. Ventoy is easy,
you just copy the iso into the empty folder named "Ventoy" and those
iso's will boot. I have no idea though if it's accessible because I
look at the screen.

Well I got the install to work, I think I went through this once before, but
forgot about it.
I had to use the DD option with Rufus for it to write the image properly to the
installation media.
But I'm having the same problem I had before, with no network.
I installed options
11 12 & 13
in the final installation, but it did not install any network stuff.
It does not even get an IP address over Ethernet.
It was connected to my WIFI during the installation, I selected my nttwork and
signed in.
This is 11.7 i386 net installation media.

Here's the trouble with a current Debian,
I go through steps 1, 2, and 3, the latter being the keyboard selection.
Then, at that point, it tells me that it cannot find the installation media.
  Really?
  It booted to it!
So I try option 6, which is search for media, and it cannot find it.
I go into option 7, and elevate the install to medium, and try 6 again, and
it can't find the installation media.
So what do I do then?
  Thanks for any help.
