You have to either uninstall gdm3 or disable it. If you don't need a login
manager, run
# apt-get remove gdm3
But I recommend to disable gdm3 by default by running
# update-rc.d -f apache2 remove
I do that with the help of the program rcconf, which shows you a nice list of
services which can be enabled via the space key.

Have you already took a look at

You need to reinstall debian if that sighted person left you the debian
disk. When you do, listen for the cd to stop spinning and then type
speakup swspeak and hit enter. You'll have speech come up talking you
through the installation especially if that's a wheezy debian disk. Can
be done with squeeze too.

Re: Debian linux howto start in textmode

2011-11-09 Thread Klaus Knopper
Hello Claudio,

It's somewhat off-topic, especially if you want to keep the version that
was already installed on your computer, but I would like to point you to
our ADRIANE project, which is Debian GNU/Linux preconfigured on a live
CD, DVD or flash disk installation (which can also be transferred to
harddisk as regular installation). ADRIANE starts directly into a
talking text mode menu with optional braille support via sbl,
speech-dispatcher and espeak.

http://knopper.net/knoppix-adriane/index-en.html

You can download the speech-enabled CD version from most of the Knoppix
mirrors. It does not require an installation and runs best from a usb
flash disk, but if you like, you can install it to harddisk, too.

ADRIANE also supports starting xorg from the text menu with orca, if you
need to use OpenOffice or firefox, but just for WWW, we use the
javascript-enabled elinks browser in textmode, which is IMHO easier to
navigate and faster than firefox with orca.

Regards
-Klaus Knopper

Why do you want to enforce it?

2011-11-09 Thread Jean-Philippe MENGUAL
Hi,

To disable graphical starting, remove or disable gdm3 as shown by other.

So brltty will oun and you'll have in braille a text login prompt. To
have speech at this time, do:
# apt-get install espeakup

In /etc/modules, add:
speakup_soft

Then you'll have the most part of the boot spoken. You can then disable
speakup and load emacspeak or speech-el.
