This is a Debian topic, this is about Debian Accessibility and there has been a very productive discussion about this going on and off this list for about a week. If you are a debian accessibility developer, perhaps your work can be done without such destructive comments. You will take note I do not like cowards who hide behind any pseudonym - unless your name is really "John Doe" - but I think that just like the comments you leave lambasting anyone who does not agree with you, that it is fake. I'd love for there to be an emacspeak engine for Vocalizer Embedded voices but it's all volunteer and people can only contribute when they have free time. I once suggested that some on the emacspeak list underwrite a stipend for the software developer by contributing $25.00 each to the effort. No one except me volunteered to pay, so maybe three years later we are still waiting for the volunteer developer to make an emacspeak engine. Emacspeak engines exist for: 1.) espeak 2.) In Debian 11 I have a solution, not good, but better than nothing. When in the Mate Desktop or terminal I use Orca. If I want to use the console I go to Alt + F2, type in "Sudo Killall Orca", which shuts down Orca. Within 10 seconds I have espeak speaking in the console. If I want to go back to the Mate desktop I again use the alt + F2 and type in "Orca", and get Orca back. A nuisance, but it works. --

But with espeak-ng, there are some better voice selections, so maybe it can be fixed that way too. Not as good as Voxin, but better than the default espeak for sure. Al, I don't think you would want both going at the same time. Orca should be providing speech in the terminal. If Speakup were still going, you would hear it along with Orca. So after testing a bit more, it seems the issue is that I can choose either Orca or Speakup. If I start a Mate session, then Speakup no longer works until the next reboot. If I start a Speakup session first, the opposite is true. Now that I understand it, I can work with this limitation if it's expected behavior; but if there is a workaround, that info would be great.
