I personally using Mate because it just works. Mate is not just a fork of GNOME2, it's a continuation of GNOME2. There are plenty of reasons why I prefer Mate over GNOME but the main one is because Mate just takes care of accessibility and do what I expect to have on my computer. Best regards.

I'm not sure what you are referring to with "install Debian with speech". The live USB boots, I hit S , and the text installer starts. Re: new 10.3 install, Gnome, screen reader starts talking then system appears to freeze, how can I troubleshoot?
Thanks Alex. Under Debian-testing, build uploaded 2020/03/09: Mate speaks correctly. My first Linux desktop. I suspect Debian 10.3 would be fine. Gnome. Same failure result, speaks a few words then nothing. Enter, Alt+Tab, Super+Tab, Alt+F2 orca --replace, nothing. I guess Debian's defaults are the defaults for a reason. Here I thought Gnome (Gnome 3) would have fewer bugs than Mate, a fork of Gnome 2. I can imagine an incompatibility, but orca under Gnome does speak a few words. I'd be willing to try some log collecting to perhaps diagnose Gnome 3. The Ubuntu 19.10 live CD has never spoken, considering their speech shortcut is Super+Alt+S, they are probably using a similar subsystem that just doesn't like my sound. Hello Alan, I see two options to try to figure out your issue the easiest way: * To determine If it's a compatibility issue with your hardware could you please try to install Debian Testing ? * To check if it's a GNOME issues, could you please try to install Mate instead of GNOME ? Then the system stops responding. Enter, Super+Alt+S, Super+Tab, or Alt+Tab yield nothing. I think the system has frozen. This is not inside a virtual machine. The CPU is 64-bit, and I have 16 GB of RAM. When I was using the text installer, I chose Gnome (menu choice 2) along with SSH (11) and standard utilities (12). I believe I can find a way to mount the USB drive and review logs. What can I review to help narrow this down? Alan

A w.A.G. on my part would be the debian desktop environment provides support for gnome mate and kde. I would put that on along with standard utilities since standard utilities puts many tools on your system that make it a linux system On Fri, 13 Mar 2020, Alan Tu wrote: > Date: Fri, 13 Mar 2020 20:42:16 > From: Alan Tu <8li...@gmail.com> > To: Jude DaShiell > Cc: debian-accessibility@lists.debian.org > Subject: Re: new 10.3 install, Gnome, > screen reader starts talking then system appears to freeze, > how can I troubleshoot? > Resent-Date: Sat, 14 Mar 2020 00:42:32 + (UTC) > Resent-From: debian-accessibility@lists.debian.org > > Thanks Jude for the response. Re: new 10.3 install, Gnome, screen reader starts talking then system appears to freeze, how can I troubleshoot?
Thanks Jude for the response. On one attempt, after I hear "screen reader on" I tried Alt+F2, orca --replace, still silent. On the next attempt, after I hear "screen reader on, 13 push button", I do nothing. About four minutes later, I hear "panel. long pause. panel. 13 push button grayed". No keys speak. I also try the Alt+F2, orca --replace and nothing happens. Let's talk about software selection. SSH server and standard utilities are constant, let's leave those out of this discussion. I have consistently chosen just "Gnome". Do I need to choose both "Gnome" and "Debian desktop environment"? I have no idea what Debian desktop environment is, because the other environment choices are very specific like Gnome, KDE and Mate. Try alt-f2 then type orca --replace and hit enter and see if that gets you anything.
