gcc-3.4 roadmap?
What's the future of amd64 compiled with gcc-3.4? I don't mean the repository that is currently compiled that way. I understand that's still missing a few packages and that it's not the "official" amd64 port, and may never be. Perhaps it's just an experiment that worked really, really well :) On the other hand, obviously at some point the amd64 port will be compiled with 3.4, and apparently there are technical benefits to doing so. Does anyone have an educated guess as to when amd64 sid will move to gcc 3.4? Or whether there will be an upgrade path from the current gcc-3.4 port? Thanks, -- Pete Harlan [EMAIL PROTECTED]

To migrate to the amd64/gcc-3.4 archive, every installed package which links to libstdc++5 (i.e. basically every packages which uses C++) has to be forced to be reinstalled using the respective package from the amd64/gcc-3.4 archive. Otherwise problems may occur resulting from an incompatibility between libstdc++5 from gcc-3.3 an libstdc++6 from gcc-3.4. I do not know of any other problems with the migration (besides the fact that there are still about 100 packages missing from the amd64/gcc-3.4 archive which are available in the gcc-3.3 based archive). Re: Thunderbird broken
I haven't updated it that recently but I also have problems: trying to send a message, or look at a message in any folder other than inbox (on IMAP) makes it segfault. Is this list the right place to raise these application-specific questions? I have issues with nautilus and thunderbird which I didn't have on i386 but should I be asking their teams? On a seperate point, someone has already asked whether now is the time to move to gcc-3.4. If it is, could someone point the users on this list towards how to migrate to gcc-3.4 and tell us whether there are any pitfalls we should look out for? I presume it is just a question of changing the sources.list and forcing everything to update; is this correct? What must be done with the gcc packages? Many thanks, Matt -- Computing Technicianwork 01223 765778 Faculty of English mobile 07717 204242 University of Cambridge [EMAIL PROTECTED]

gdb missing in gcc-3.4
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 hi, as it seems, there is no gdb available in the gcc-3.4 archive! i regard gdb as a rather important tool and thus i'm quite suprised that it is lacking. i haven't found any report about gdb missing in this list. why is it not there? what can i do to work around or solve this issue? of course, the chroot trick is inappropriate if debugging 64bit apps. how about the gdb package of pure64 - is it going to work for me? for now i'll catch my bug via printf debugging like real a man would ;) knue -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.2.5 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFBLItV4TR4gVE/spsRAvkfAKC5s7N+zFz9qEb3Y719t/kTIAs/2ACg2bIw kgTwz0PZnaw3RQ2YhmJUxhg= =F5R5 -END PGP SIGNATURE-

OpenOffice: broken dependency?
Hi, If I understood it correctly, then the way to get openoffice is to include deb http://debian-amd64.alioth.debian.org/ openoffice.org/ in sources.list and then apt-get openoffice.org-amd64. If this is correct, then I'm afraid I have to report a broken dependency here: --- The following packages have unmet dependencies: openoffice.org-debian-files: Depends: openoffice.org-bin (> 1.1.1+1.1.2rc3) but it is not installable Package openoffice.org-bin is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source However the following packages replace it: openoffice.org E: Package openoffice.org-bin has no installation candidate --- So, could someone please rebuild the debian-files package to not depend on openoffice.org-bin, but openoffice.org instead? -- Sebastian Steinlechner
Cinelerra compilation and linking
Good morning, Slightly off-topic, but I hope someone might be interested. I was compiling yesterday the fresh new version of cinelerra 1.2.1 using only the tools and libraries available with debian-amd64 port. It went fine, so I guess all the object files are OK, but failed on linking. Here is what I got: ../../freetype-2.1.4/x86_64/libfreetype.a: file not recognized: File format not recognized collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make[3]: *** [../x86_64/titler.plugin] BÅÄd 1 Here are the compiler and linker versions: GNU ld version 2.14.90.0.7 20031029 Debian GNU/Linux gcc (GCC) 3.3.4 (Debian 1:3.3.4-2) Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.
