wacom tablet and gcc versions
Does anybody have wacom driver from wacom-kernel-source working with kernel 2.6.8 on the current sid? I can build module package, with a small caveat however, and load the driver. But I think it doesn't get control over the device. usbhid module is disabled. Building problem was in gcc version: it was impossible to load the module compiled in the default configuration, because gcc package went with gcc-3.3 by default, and the module must be compiled with gcc-3.4 as was mentioned by dmesg. And I didn't find better way to compile the module then temporarily changing symlinks for gcc, cpp and g++ from 3.3 to 3.4. So I think it's strange a bit when the kernel is not built with the default compiler. Maybe I don't understand default compiler situation in amd64 port completely. Could you please help me to get it clear. Thanks! -- ~dd -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

octave and octave-forge
Hi everybody, I have octave and octave-forge installed, but on updates it happens octave being updated before octave-forge. To install octave-forge it seems compulsory for it to match the octave version, but it is sometimes annoying having octave-forge removed from an upgrade because of a minor octave update. For example the actual octave-forge in the archive seems 2.65, but octave is 2.65-1, so octave-forge will not install. I could put the octave package on hold, but I don't understand why they are not being updated at the same time. cheers, fc -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Gigabyte GA-7A8DW http://tw.giga-byte.com/Server/Products/Products_ServerBoard_GA-7A8DW.htm They are quite similar (including a price ;) though there are some differences: 1. Form factor ATX vs. EATX (although Gigabyte claims design to fit ATX chassis screw hole, and I think it will fit my middle-tower). try to get size of MB ( e.g. from manual) and compare with your case... 2. Tyan's board has Intel 82541EI GbE LAN controller on-board while Gigabyte's possess Broadcom BCM 5705 (which one is better?). I don't know which is better, but the intel works perfectly - although tested only on Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps) - no available 1 Gbps switch :( 3. Tyan has 5 PCI slots, Gigabyte - 2 PCI-X and 1 PCI (currently I don't have any PCI-X devices). 4. Tyan has integrated Firewire controller (I use firewire sometimes, currently with PCI controller). With respect to the features, I would prefer Tyan's board. But as a brand I like Gigabyte better than Tyan: previously I've had some negative experience with Tyan, and for more than a year I have been very pleased by dual-athlon Gigabyte motherboard GA-7DPXDW-P. I know only about 2 Tyan MB in my neighbourhood - without any problem. But with one Gigabyte A64 (sock. 754) MB (K8VT800) we have serious problem - it cannot run with 2 DIMM double sided modules - but ram is problemfree - I don't know if it is problem with CPU or MB, but there are some people on forum.amd.com, which complain about same or very similar problem with gigabyte MB. :( Milan -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Do you do an apt-get update or apt-get dist-upgrade? octave-forge 2004.11.16-3 has this dependency: Depends: octave2.1 (= 2.1.64), octave2.1 ( 2.1.65) Version 2004.11.16-4 has this instead: Depends: octave2.1 (= 2.1.65) This means that when octave just changed version from 2.1.64-1 to 2.1.65-1, and octave-forge wasn't updated yet, you couldn't satisfy the dependency if you want the new version of octave. The behaviour I expect from apt in that case is this: - On update it should say that octave is hold back and not upgrade it. - On dist-upgrade it should remove octave-forge and upgrade octave. If that is not the behaviour you're seeing, I suggest you file a bug against apt. Now, as you can see, they changed the dependency to be less strict, so you probably won't have that problem in the future. I understand debian's current default gcc (3.3) 's support for amd64 isn't really up to standard. The kernel, being a critical part of the system, was beter off being compiled using gcc-3.4 instead. But to stay compatable with Sarge, the rest of the distribution (at least pure64) is compiled using gcc-3.3. This means that all kernel modules must also be compiled with gcc-3.4, though. The way you changed the link is fine. Don't worry. If you wish you can even leave gcc pointing to gcc-3.4, this will not cause any problems. When, in a few months, the default compiler is changed to something else (possibly gcc-4.0), this link will get overwritten. Yes, I got it from their website. Right, it's the developers release, but, hey, I am not running woody either. For me, it's running pretty stable, but I am using it on my laptop as a single user and not with high traffic. Laptop also means, a fresh reboot every morning. I compiled with minimal external libraries, no kerberos I guess. No sign of kerberos in the config files. Sorry, it's a while that I compiled and installed it.
