Great, thanks!

My personal list of release critical bugs for amd64/sarge has now only
three bugs left (not counting lsb-release and libmysqlclient-lgpl which
will hopefully enter sarge soon):

sarge/main/amd64 BTS Bug Problem description
 --- ---
debian-installer #306976+ libdevmapper1.00 does not exist (should be 1.01)
debian-installer #307306+ Uses kernel 2.6.10 which is not in sarge
syslinux #306123+ amd64 missing from architecture list and FTBFS

Of course there are still a few other packages which did not apply the
necessary patches for amd64. However, I think that those packages and
all their dependencies can simply be removed from the amd64/sarge release:

The short answer is that you have to run grub-install, which:
- puts the necessary files in /boot/grub on whatever device you specify
- installs grub to the boot block of the device you specify

Then, you have to run update-grub to make a menu.lst.

...but there's more, and I don't want to type it all. Here's a little
howto I found for you:

However, lsb-release has been fixed in unstable, and this fixed version has
been marked for approval into sarge.

Use ia32-libs-dev (version 1.4 from tonight/tomorrow) and install it
_outside_ the chroot.

Re: install problem: libc6_2.3.2.ds1-21

2005-05-05 Thread Karl Hoppel

Goswin, thanks for the advice. However, I am not smart enough to
understand what it means. The apt-get program will not let me do
anything without resolving the dependency problem that arose because
libc6 was not corretly installed.

Here is what I tried:

% apt-get --reinstall install base-files=3.1.2
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  libc6-dev: Depends: libc6 (= 2.3.2.ds1-21) but 2.3.2.ds1-18 is to be installed
  locales: Depends: glibc-2.3.2.ds1-21
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a
solution).

The problem is that you didn't upgrade in a while and that this
version doesn't have the Conflicts + Replaces anymore that should
do the upgrade without problems for you.

To fix this do:
dpkg --force-overwrite -i /var/cache/apt/archives/libc6_2.3.2.ds1-21_amd64.deb

This will move the /usr/lib64 from base-files to libc6.

Then upgrade your base-files to the lastest version:
apt-get upgrade base-files

That should install base-files 3.1.2. (Or a 3.1.2-0.0.1)

If that didn't work try with apt-get install base-files=3.1.2

It should be fixed at that stage, but I suggest you follow it by:
dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/libc6_2.3.2.ds1-21_amd64.deb

This makes sure the symlink is now owned by libc6.

I have solved it, by commenting the "chroot i386 system libs" entries in the

You must do that before uncommenting "chroot i386 system libs entries" and

After this update, the machine boot fine and the display works in
cosole mode but while swtiching to X when gdm starts, I get a black
screen with only the cursor image in white.

The machine is still alive and I can access it via ssh. But I cannot
even swith to a console and try a "blind reboot" with
and then log in. I cannot kill the X server with .

Me2.
Same board, but I use sid-32bit.

It seems to be a mess, but works: I use the "nvidia" module (lsmod), but
for X11 I use "nv" (XF86Config-4).

When I configure X11 to use "nvidia" instead of "nv", the machine
crashes like you described. "nv" is working.

Some weeks ago I tried Ubuntu unstable, but didn't use it anymore since
then. When this problem occured, I booted into Ubuntu just to see it
crashing like you described, even it was working before Bios-Update and
I didn't reconfigure anything. That means: X.org is hit by the problem
also, exactly like XFree. Maybe using nv instead of nvidia made you
believe Ubuntu would run? And up/downgrading the kernel may have broken
the nvidia module, so nv is used instead, so that made you believe the
kernel-up/downgrade fixed it?

I've to agree: Asus broke our machines.

Bye,
Ratti

Oops, sorry. I overlooked #305122, maybe because it was tagged
'fixed' which was not true. Thanks for correcting the tag.

However, even with the patch from #305122, 'ia32-libs' cannot be built
and installed in sarge. This is the case because the patch does not
remove the 'Depends' and 'Build-Depends' on 'lsb-release' which FTBFS
in sarge for amd64. The working ia32-libs version 0.7 did not
(Build-)Depend on 'lsb-release'.

If you check the mailing list archive for Subject: AMD64 Archive Move
you'll see that the archive is on the move:

As announced earlier the Debian AMD64 archive moved away from alioth
the weekend from 30. April til today, 2. May.
Yes, that is why there are so many days without updates.

This is just a short information, and we are still evaluating the
archive, so if you dont like the small chance to kill your system you
maybe wait with a change until we sent out the full announce. We expect
that to happen somewhere between now and Saturday night.

It looks good for us, but we want to make sure it is fully working
before we do something big with it.

For the impatient here are the important things you need to know:
- Modify /etc/apt/sources.list to read like

 deb http://amd64.debian.net/debian/ DIST main contrib

and replace DIST with either sid or sarge (or testing/unstable),
whatever you prefer to have. Thats it basically, now your system will
do the right thing fetching the packages.

Note: NO non-free is provided yet. We need to decide what we do
with it, as some software in it may forbid us to distribute it (we
arent Debian). Probably we will do a case-by-case study for things
that we consider important and add them if license allows us to.

We also intend to offer a push-mirror service for interested
mirrors, so if you are an interested mirror admin please
contact me and I will come back to you with further
instructions, as soon as we are sure our archive is clean.

Hi!
Where do I find build status on a package? I.e. why a package is not in
testing, but in unstable .. My googling only found status for other debian
arch's ..

My problem is that libtasn1-2 is not in debian-amd64/testing, but in
i386/testing .. and packages like libgnutls11 is dependent on that, which
in turn programs like mutt and lynx are dependent on.

My sources.list is:
deb http://bach.hpc2n.umu.se/debian-pure64 testing main contrib non-free
deb-src http://bach.hpc2n.umu.se/debian-pure64 testing main contrib
non-free

deb http://bach.hpc2n.umu.se/debian-pure64 unstable main contrib
deb-src http://bach.hpc2n.umu.se/debian-pure64 unstable main contrib
..and I use /etc/apt/preferences to priorities testing over unstable.
I checked the archive at amd64.debian.net as well.. same thing there.

ia32-libs: Patch to make 'ia32-libs' work again on amd64/sarge

2005-05-05 Thread Andreas Jochens
retitle 307521 ia32-libs: Broken on amd64 / Compilation with 'gcc-3.4 -m32'
does not work
tags 307521 +patch
thanks

I made some tests and finally found a small patch which makes ia32-libs
work again on amd64/sarge without any change to other packages, i.e.
without changing the 'gcc-3.4' package from sarge.

The attached patch does the following:

* Remove the (Build-)Depends on 'lsb-release' from debian/control.

* Change debian/rules, debian/ia32-libs.postinst and debian/ia32-libs/postrm
to use 'ROOT=' and 'SUFFIX=32' also for Debian amd64.

* Change debian/ia32-libs.postinst and debian/ia32-libs/postrm to create
and remove a symlink from /emul/ia32-linux/usr/lib/libgcc_s.so.1 to
  /usr/lib32/libgcc_s.so.1.
This symlink is necessary for sarge because the lib32gcc1 package
  from gcc-3.4 installs libgcc_s.so.1 in /emul/ia32-linux/usr/lib
instead of /usr/lib32. Once the gcc-3.4 package is corrected to
use /usr/lib32, this symlink can simply be dropped.

* Change a sed rule in debian/rules so that it does not remove the leading
'/' in the first commentary lines of libc.so and libpthread.so.

With this patch, it is possible to compile 32 bit binaries with 'gcc-3.4 -m32'
and to run those binaries.

If going back to the old working ia32-libs version 0.7 is not an option
for some reason, this small patch could be used to make ia32-libs work
again on amd64.

Regards
Andreas Jochens
