nVidia, acpi, apic and PCI controller
hello, i fail to boot my amd64 server (nVidia chip) with kernel 2.6.12 or 2.6.14 and ACPI plus APIC support. if i boot the kernel without any boot parameters, it hangs directly after the beginning of boot process at some problems with the PCI controller. it tells something like PCI32 ... failed ..., but i don't remember the exact message. if i use acpi=off as boot-parameter, the boot process stops later, at detecting the sata harddisks. only with 'acpi=off noapic' the kernel boots without problems. is this a known issue? how can i fix it? lspci gives the following output: :00:00.0 Memory controller: nVidia Corporation CK804 Memory Controller (rev a3) :00:01.0 ISA bridge: nVidia Corporation CK804 ISA Bridge (rev a3) :00:01.1 SMBus: nVidia Corporation CK804 SMBus (rev a2) :00:02.0 USB Controller: nVidia Corporation CK804 USB Controller (rev a2) :00:02.1 USB Controller: nVidia Corporation CK804 USB Controller (rev a3) :00:06.0 IDE interface: nVidia Corporation CK804 IDE (rev f2) :00:07.0 IDE interface: nVidia Corporation CK804 Serial ATA Controller (rev f3) :00:08.0 IDE interface: nVidia Corporation CK804 Serial ATA Controller (rev f3) :00:09.0 PCI bridge: nVidia Corporation CK804 PCI Bridge (rev a2) :00:0c.0 PCI bridge: nVidia Corporation CK804 PCIE Bridge (rev a3) :00:0d.0 PCI bridge: nVidia Corporation CK804 PCIE Bridge (rev a3) :00:0e.0 PCI bridge: nVidia Corporation CK804 PCIE Bridge (rev a3) :00:18.0 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] K8 [Athlon64/Opteron] HyperTransport Technology Configuration :00:18.1 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] K8 [Athlon64/Opteron] Address Map :00:18.2 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] K8 [Athlon64/Opteron] DRAM Controller :00:18.3 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] K8 [Athlon64/Opteron] Miscellaneous Control :00:19.0 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] K8 [Athlon64/Opteron] HyperTransport Technology Configuration :00:19.1 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] K8 [Athlon64/Opteron] Address Map :00:19.2 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] K8 [Athlon64/Opteron] DRAM Controller :00:19.3 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] K8 [Athlon64/Opteron] Miscellaneous Control :01:06.0 VGA compatible controller: S3 Inc. 86c764/765 [Trio32/64/64V+] :01:08.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): Texas Instruments TSB43AB22/A IEEE-1394a-2000 Controller (PHY/Link) :01:09.0 RAID bus controller: Silicon Image, Inc. is that an nforce4? mine has ck804 also and is nforce4 but has nvraid rather than sil. but anyway yes it is a known issue but im sure it should be solved, my board doesnt have the same problem so i thought it was. that video card is comically old. it made me laugh thinking how old that is compared to everything else. Gxine / Xine chrashes
Hi together, my gxine (Sid, amd64, all vanilla kernels) crashes very often. E.g. when I want to listen to the German radio station swr3 or when I listen to mp3's. Watching DVD's, it does not crash. Using gxine in chroot it does not crash. Starting gxine in a console window says: -%- [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ gxine lirc: lirc_init failed. Make sure that you have lircd running lirc: and that you have the permissions to connect to the socket Speicherzugriffsfehler -%- strace -e open gxine says: -%- +++ killed by SIGSEGV +++ -%- Do you experience the same problem? If yes, how do you solve it? Or should I write to xine-devel? Greetings, Tobias -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: nVidia, acpi, apic and PCI controller
i did update my bios but it had no effect on anything. i never had that problem in the first place. (btw im using a dfi-lanparty ut sli board, running sid) http://atlas.et.tudelft.nl/verwei90/nforce2/index.html there is plenty of information there. Re: 32 bit firefox on amd64 system
Nathan O. Siemers wrote: Related to recent threads (installation of flash on firefox, etc). I've got a debootstrap ia32 system installed in /emul. The intent is to install firefox (i386) from tarballs at mozilla.org and use it without chrooting. If you created this chroot with debootstrap, why not install firefox with apt? Execute chroot /emul and from there run apt-get install mozilla-firefox or whatever you prefer. Then, to run it, use the setup described in the AMD64 HOWTO, using dchroot and the simple wrapper script. I believe this to be much easier. -- Eureka! -- Archimedes Eduardo M KALINOWSKI [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://move.to/hpkb -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: Best approach for a system that needs desktop apps and 64bit address space
Hi all, Hello what would be the best approach? A completely 64-bit OS (Still not an option, but hey...) Install an ia32 system with 64SMP kernel or the whole 64 system with ia32 chroot? I'd go with the 64 bit system with a 32 bit chroot, that way you can take advantage of the hardware and still run the programs that you need that haven't been ported / will not build / don't exist on AMD64. If configured properly, your users will never know the difference.
