[Fwd: Bug#340982: libjasper-runtime: Images are not created correctly]

2005-11-27 Thread Roland Stigge
Hi,

does sth. like this happen more often for amd64?

Feel free to bin-NMU, I don't have the time to work on this for the
following 2 weeks.

Thanks!

bye,
  Roland
---BeginMessage---
Package: libjasper-runtime
Version: 1.701.0-2
Severity: important

On AMD64 image conversion generates just single colour grey image only
and not the image that it is actually meant to be.

e.g.
jasper -f cats.pnm -F cats.jp2
or anything that uses jasper library
convert cats.pnm cats.jp2

produces just that single grey image. On any images i have tried only
that grey image was crated.

Recompiling the jasper source and installing the 2 packages fixed this
problem. No changes at all to the source, just a recompile.

Other then that, there isn't anything I can tell you that might have
affected this. I just compiled the source only.

Hopefully doing the same there will fix this.

Thanks

Chris

I believe this is a know bug in reiserfs. Try XFS, JFS or ext3. I
suspect you will see the problem disappear.

I've just spent the last two days converting all of my Linux partitions
from reiserfs to xfs. (And switching to LVM in the process as well.)

I'll give this a shot for a few days and see if the situation improves.

Hello! from a newbie+ problems with debian for amd64+can't boot debian for i386 on amd64 from cd+can't extract sbm.bin from cd

2005-11-27 Thread Martin Baldan

   Hello everyone!

   I've
been wanting gradually move to linux for years, but was afraid because,
due to academic requierements (specific applications I *must* use), I
still need to have winXP installed on my computer for some time to
come. I tried dual boot with Suse and it was more or less ok, but I
preferred two independent hard drives. One reason is that Debian was
the distribution I most looked forward to trying, but I had heard that
partitions, dual boot and several other issues could be tricky. I've
recently bought a new computer, and decided it was the time to put my
scheme into practice. I felt adventurous, so I also decided to move
from intel and give amd a try :D

   My computer:

   processor: AMD Athlon 3500
   motherboard: DFI NF4 infinity
graphics card: ATI Radeon X300 SE

I Can give more details about the following, if needed:

Two hard disks mounted on mobile racks
   cd/dvd reader
   cd/dvd writer
   floppy disk unit

   My problems:

I've downloaded boththe unofficial Debian net installation cd iso imagefor AMD64 and the official Debian 3.1 (Sarge)net installation for i386 (I've read it works also on AMD64) and I've burnt the cd's.

   I
had no major problems to istall Debian for amd64, except that some
packages were missing and the like, but some crucial features fail to
work (at least under the Gnome GUI). For instance I can't add users
(that is, I can do it from bash but not from Gnome). I'm totally new to
linux, so I'm lost if I must use the command line for everything.

   So
I decided to try the official Debian Sarge for i386, to see if it works
on my amd computer. The problem is that my BIOS won't boot from the CD
(but it DID boot from the unofficial cd!!). I've read that the
reason may be that some old BIOS(old?? Ha! :P) can't
read isolinux files. The sollution, if I got it right, is to open the
iso image, find the sbm.binfile and copy it to a floppy disk,
then boot with both the floppy disk and the cd in my computer.

   The
file is there, I can see it, BUT when I sellect this file and clik
extracta message appears saying that I have no permission to
extract the file... but hey, I'veentered as root, how come I have
no permission to do that?(I have a screenshot if anyone wants to see it)

   My questions:

   1) Why don't I have permission to extract the sbm.
bin file? How can I solve that?

   2) I there anotherway to install Sarge for i-386
that works in my computer, apart from booting from the installation cd?

   3) How can I use kde instead of Gnome as a GUI? (some
say it works better)

Again, my kindest greetings to everyone, sorry for every pi
ece of missing information or dumb questions.

   Regards,

   Martin O.B.

Don't think its a good way to trying to extract something, may
you've burned your cd in a wrong way. Did you setup your
burning software in the correct way to create a bootable image ?

is in sid, runs on my machine very well, standard install from debian
packages.

if you are a real newby, you may wait until december. As I knew debian etch
should be finished in december, and there amd64 should be one of the standard
supported systems.

Hi!1) Why don't I have permission to extract the sbm.bin file? How can I solve that? Don't think its a good way to trying to extract something, may
you've burned your cd in a wrong way. Did you setup your burning software in the correct way to create a bootable image?Definitely! A while later I realised I was dumbly copying
the .iso file to a cd instead of burning an image.Besides, I was trying to extract the file into the cd-rom instead of, say, the desktop.
Anyway, I've finally burnt the cd and it more or less works (though I had to type linux26,otherwise it wouldn't recognise my ethernet card) Now the problem is that I can't connect to the mirrors to complete the installation (it says temporal error).
I had to set the internet configuration manually, so I may have done a mistake, but I don't know where. I'm re-installing the amd64 version, which at least can set the internet configuration automatically,
and download nearly all packages (except security updates, among others !!). if you are a real newby, you may wait until december. As I knew debian etch

should be finished in december, and there amd64 should be one of the standard

supported systems. That's cool! I thought it would take a bit longer.Anyway, I have nothing better to install on my drive,
so I'll try to get used to Debian now,and then, when Etch is released, I'll give it a try. Thanks for your help!

Doubt on KDE- repository

2005-11-27 Thread antonio giulio
Hi,

I use this repository for KDE: http://pkg-kde.alioth.debian.org/

Now it has partially packages for KDE 3.4.3 and KDE 3.5RC1 (and no
more for 3.4.2), but if I try to update from 3.4.3 dir, I got error.
Any days ago, kde-devel packages are removed and no more updated for
unstable-debian.
Is it possibile get packages for kde 3.4.3 and kde-devel packages too?
Is there an alternative repository?

Thanks,
Giulio
