My application is vserver-based services, so naturally I'm interested in maximizing the amount I can run on a given machine. I understand up to 400 VServers are easily doable on a 4 GByte machine, depending on average footprint, of course. (I currently only run few ten on a 1.4 GHz 2 GByte Athlon XP machine, which perform very well). If you need to run different kernels, or even different OS simultaneously, or only need to run a few lightly loaded virtual servers on each physical machine VServer is not the right solution. -- Eugen* Leitl http://leitl.org";>leitl http://leitl.org __ ICBM: 48.07100, 11.36820http://www.ativel.com 8B29F6BE: 099D 78BA 2FD3 B014 B08A 7779 75B0 2443 8B29 F6BE signature.asc Description: Digital signature

libc6-i386 versus ia32-libs
Hello everybody, today updating my sid I noticed this conflict, and I was wondering if I can remove ia32-libs from my system or if I have to wait until a new version of ia32-libs compatible with libc6-i386 comes out (and maybe this should be the right way to do since, if I am not wrong, ia32-libs contains many more libraries than llibc6). Suggestions?

Re: where to find a linux-image-2.6* package?
> I want to install a generic 64-bit kernel in order to complete my > installation of amd64 using debootstrap. OK, so I looked on my sarge installation DVD #1 and found a stock kernel package to get me started: kernel-image-2.6.8-11-amd64-k8_2.6.8-14_amd64.deb. But now I can't install it, because it needs to build an initrd using 64-bit tools as part of the installation. So I have a chicken-and-egg problem: * I can't install the 64-bit kernel, because it needs 64-bit tools to build its initrd. * I can't run the 64-bit tools yet, because I'm not running a 64-bit kernel. So it seems to me that for those of us who are still running in 32 bits, installing amd64 via debootstrap is simply not possible. We have to boot debian-installer. Am I wrong? This was exactly what I did the other day when I finally got Sarge installed. I did have to manually modprobe sata_uli from console 2 as you mention, but that was no big deal. I finally found the installer by doing a google for "debian-install uli 5289" instead of "debian-installer uli m1689". Also, for those that might google this in the future, my IDE solution failed. As with the only other SATA mobo I've played with, this mobo does not like to boot off any kind of hdd when there is both a SATA hdd and IDE hdd connected. It will however boot off a hdd when there is an IDE cdrom attached. Yet the BIOS reports the two IDE channels as 0 & 1, and the SATA as being channel 2. Whatever. The amd64 installer linked above worked perfectly. Often they are physically wired together on the main board. The IRQ routing is generally done based on the PCI slot number the device is attached to. If the mainboard maker attached them to the same irq line, then they must have thought it could work fine that way. If they are on different wires then perhaps the BIOS just assigned them the same IRQ because it was low on IRQs although on a modern system that seems unlikely. What does lspci show on the system? Expect many burned pizzas in the near future. :) But seriously. I got hold of the xen 3 deb sources currently stuck in NEW and a 2.6.15+2.6.16-rc5 linux-2.6 svn snapshot, compiled them, installed them, added the correct grub options in menu.lst and it (would have) booted right up (if only I had made an initrd). Since I hate initrds I compiled my own kernel (which actualy took much longer than making an initrd would have) and had my system up and running in xen. After fixing 2 minor bugs (create 2 dirs) the xen-utils work too. Next up is creating actual real life domains and to put services into them instead of the core domain. In summary I have to suggest waiting a while longer for the xen3 debs to mature a bit (what do you expect of the initial release?) or to use upstream sources directly. As for vserver the amd64.debian.net itself is a vserver and I haven't seen any problems with it so far. MfG Goswin -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Hi together, I recently installed Debian OpenOffice.org packages from deb ftp://ftp-fourier.ujf-grenoble.fr/linux/oo64/ ./ Everything work great, but: I can't open .odt (well all .od*) files and also the .sxw (all .sx*) files. Is it the same with your Installation. All other files (e.g. .doc files) open without problems. I even can create .odt files. Is there w workaround for this?
