since some days I wait for an answer to your thread for I have similar
problems.

I solved the sound problem with adding my user to audio within the
chroot and then starting the realplayer with aoss.

But my picture is still skipping. I trie to add 3D support to my chroot,
but with no success. Maybe that would solve it.

I'm sorry -- I'm a bit confused about what this script does, and
the web page didn't really explain it. Does it remove the need for
a 32-bit chroot to run the above apps on a 64-bit system? If so,
how? By putting the 32-bit libraries in a special location, and
then surrounding all the above apps in a script wrapper that
sets library paths to the new locations? That kind of thing?

OK. What you want is

ln -s $CHROOT/lib/ld-linux.so.2 /lib/ld-linux.so.2

Right, although it's not at all clear to me from reading the HOWTO that that
will really work. You're right that that part is confusingly written. As
well as I can tell, it seems that that section, as well as "The Quick Way",
is about running 32-bit apps without a chroot, while the other sections
inbetween them are about setting up a chroot. Personally I've had complete
success with the chroot, and no success at all with the other.

Okay, I got it! I downloaded the kernel source from
www.kernel.org, built it using dpkg, installed it,
rebooted, and my drive showed up as /dev/sda. Next I
partitioned it with fdisk and finally mounted it
successfully.

Thanks for all the ideas. I am on a steep learning
curve. Each problem takes one full day to resolve.
Next on the agenda is my sound card.

I don't know, but you could test any cd inst with newer kernel to see if it
recognise your disks. Otherwise if you have your system full installed, and
this is only a new drive (/home or /srv) you could try to upgrade.

Is it possible that the new ia32-libs doesn't setup ld.so.conf?
After changing it to

/usr/X11R6/lib
/emul/ia32-linux/lib
/emul/ia32-linux/usr/lib
/emul/ia32-linux/usr/X11R6/lib

HOWTO Installing a Debian IA32 chroot system

2006-03-13 Thread Gary W. Swearingen
I'd like some help deciphering the debian-amd64-howto.html HOWTO.
Specifically, the "Installing a Debian IA32 chroot system" section.

(I'm trying to get "realplayer" running in a month-old 64-bit
"etch". I don't recall why I chose "etch" instead of "sid" or "sarge";
maybe someone can remind me. :)

The HOWTO has one do "chroot /var/chroot/sid-ia32", and then starts
talking about "/whatever", without saying whether that's the base "/"
or the chroot's "/".

Reading between the lines, I'm guessing it means the base
/etc/ld.so.conf, so I changed that.

But now I don't understand this at all:

You also need a link to your 32bit linker in the /lib path. Change
in to directory /lib and create a link to the 32bit linker library
of your chroot: (The name of the 64bit linker is
ld-linux-x86-64.so.2)

I'm again guessing it wants the link in the base "/lib", but what
should the link be named? I surely don't want to replace the 64-bit
linker with a link to the 32-bit linker, do I? I need more steps in
my cookbook or a better explanation of what's going on.

It seems that the goal here is to be able to run a 32-bit app (I'm
trying to run the Real Video player) without having to do a chroot.
Correct?

I tried to install RealPlayer10GOLD.rpm in the chroot, and it seemed
to install OK, but when I run it (RealPlayer10GOLD.bin, within the
chroot) I get this msg:

   home/jojo/bin/RealPlayer10GOLD.bin: error while loading shared
libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such
   file or directory

Within the chroot, "ls -d /usr/lib/libstd*" gives:

lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 18 Feb 12 03:31 /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6 ->
libstdc++.so.6.0.7
-rw-r--r--  1 root root 882324 Jan 29 03:50 /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6.0.7

So, it seems I have two question, one about configuring "ldconfig" and
the other about how to install/configure a libstd++.so.5 for
"realplayer".

(BTW, I'm returning to Linux after 6 years of FreeBSD (don't ask), for
which I don't recall a single library version problem, and almost the
first thing I do after the OS install is be reminded of many old
memories of Linux library problems. I never did learn what they did
differently. I sure hope the problematic Linux way has some side
benefit I'm not aware of.)

Thanks.

Fam did this on one of my boxes. I eventually tried writing a script to kill
and restart it when it started consuming 100% of the CPU time but I never got
it to work correctly. Anyway after much research I concluded that no one
really knew what was wrong and no one was looking at fixing it - I removed
fam.

Nothing stopped working but konqueror no longer detects changes to the file
system as quickly as it did before. As I understand it this is because it now
has to poll rather than simply listen t fam.

You need to check your motherboard, and download some kernel sources with a
suitable driver. `lspci` might give you some clues. Compile yourself a new
kernel, including the drivers for the SATA card; note they must be compiled
right into the kernel {not as modules}. Install new kernel and regenerate
your bootloader.

Reboot into new kernel and make sure your SATA drive is recognised. You can
then migrate your system over and remove the IDE drive.

Joseph Legner wrote:

The Debian netinst CD would not detect the hard drive,
NIC, video card, or sound card. I salvaged an old PCI
NIC from a dead computer and also installed an IDE
drive, and was able to successfully install to the IDE
drive. I then fussed for a week and finally got the
nVidia driver up and running. Still no sound, though.

So, right now I have Debian running on the IDE drive
while my 200 GB SATA drive is in the case, useless. I
know enough to look under /dev, but it only lists my
CD drive and the IDE drive with its partitions.

My question is: what do I need to do to get my Debian
system, which is running on an IDE hard drive, to
recognize and mount a separate SATA drive?

Forgive me if this is trivial, because I am rather new
at administering Linux.

Thanks in advance,
Joe Legner

I'm running into a (possibly) similar issue in my attempt to move my
install from an IDE to a SCSI disk. From what I've been able to gather,
I need to add the necessary module(s) for my card to
/etc/mkinitrd/modules and run mkinitrd. I believe you can also do a
dpkg-reconfigure on your kernel package. Haven't had a chance to try
this yet, but I hope to try it tonight.

Your issue may be completely unrelated, but I thought I'd share my
experience.

Just out of curiosity, which SATA controller are you using?

which version of debian have you tried to install? you need a recent kernel,
problably at least 2.6.12 or if it's a recent hw a 2.6.15.

Detecting SATA drive after install

2006-03-13 Thread Joseph Legner
I had a generic AMD64 computer built for me, and they
put a SATA hard drive in it. It also has a
motherboard with on-board NIC, video, and sound.

Thanks in advance,
Joe Legner

Is this one of the systems where telling ACPI that you are running

Re: amd64-archive update

2006-03-13 Thread Matthieu Helleboid
Hello all,

I've just made a change, simply update amd64-archive and it should work.
The only problem is for people using reprepro < 0.8 (version in sarge),
because of new option "--noskipold", but I don't have much time now.

The problem was that mozilla-flash-player7 was replaced by
mozilla-flash-player7-binary on debian-unofficial.org.

For information, there is also a backport for wine (version 0.9.7) in this
version.

Thanks. But..Waht version of the k3b you are using? My is 0.12.12-1,
and the
problemas seasm to be growisofs specific.

A did have to fix the permissions by myself, and k3b does not report
wrong
permission for none of the porgrams(cdrecord, cdrda, mksisofs, growisofs).

But a couloel of days ago I ahve updated the firmware of my DVD-writer
to add
support for new dvd burnable media and k3b report that there is no 'support
for burning DVD-R sequential...'. This did not happens before. SO a try
'force', yeah a really love 'live in the edge', try strong emotions, and
things like that. And the growisofs return the same erro again, about runing
'uiltin_dd'.

I still have no tried run as root. I will try this soon. Any way I
preparing
a vfat partion to share data with the windows instalation on my HD and try
using NERO to burn DVD's if the CD/DVD-burning on linux still acting in a
strangeous way.

So...Thank you very muchh for help, all of you.

ps: there is a thing that I really want understand: why cdrecodr does not
found my write on ATAPI transport? the only way to cdrecord report my
dvd-writer is runing 'cdrecord dev=ATA:1,0,0 -scanbus' os dev=/dev/hdc.
'cdrdao scanbus' reports a writer on ATA:1,0,0 but I supose to see a
ATAPI:0,0,0 device. On my AthlonXP computer the CD-writer/DVD-rom combo
driver is reported to on ATAPI:0,0,0.. I really confused.

somebody on the list has to correct me if my info is not 100% correct -
I am not firm with the topic.

fam is the file alteration monitor. It checks changes of files. This is
good for e.g. Filebrowsers for getting updates of files immedeatly. What
apps depend on fam:
-%<-
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]> apt-cache showpkg fam

Package: fam
Versions:
2.7.0-9(/var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.twc.de_debian_dists_sid_main_binary-i386_Packages)

Reverse Depends:
  lincvs,fam
  stopmotion,fam
  libgnomevfs2-0,fam
  libfam0,fam 2.7.0-9
  gnome-panel,fam
  gnome-desktop-environment,fam
  gamin,fam
  education-desktop-gnome,fam
  doodled,fam
  apachetop,fam
Dependencies:
2.7.0-9 - libc6 (2 2.3.5-1) libgcc1 (2 1:4.0.2) libstdc++6 (2 4.0.2-4)
portmap (0 (null))

Reverse Provides:

If you have non of these applications, you can securely remove it. If
you have one of the apps, they won't get file change infos in time.

I bet you didn't first install and boot a 64bit kernel. Bootstraping
will run some commands in the new system it creates and you can only
run amd64 binaries with a 64bit kernel. There is a 2.6.8 amd64 kernel
in sarge.

On a similar issue I've found that the latest update appears to have broken k3b (when attempting to burn an image I get the error (cdrecord returned error code 1) which appears to be permissions related, since it successfully burnt the image when run as root. I haven't checked all the permissions manually but k3b identifies when it starts up that "cdrecord will be run without root priviledges" and "cdrdao will be run without root priviledges". Starting k3bsetup to fix this currently gets me a blank panel (from the command "kcmshell 'k3bsetup2'").

That does not really surprise me, as the account under which fam runs is
an ordinary user account. So I don't expect it to be system critical.
But assuming that there is reason why it is installed, do you have any
idea what program is not functioning as it should be because fam is not
running?
