Xorg 7.0

2006-04-13 Thread Gudjon I. Gudjonsson
Hi
Excuse me for my stupidity but I made the mistake of installing xorg 7.0
despite warnings just to find out there is no xserver-xorg. Does anyone know
for how long I might have to wait or should I start the non-trivial task of
downgrate Xorg?

Regards
Gudjon

Using the new integrated-with-Debian amd64, or amd64.debian.net?
Hard to tell but it looks like xserver-xorg-core is available in
official amd64 now, maybe there are other components still missing.

You probably shouldn't force major upgrades through with missing
dependencies :-|

 Any ideas?
However, I still maintain that the kernel will not boot unless
'acpi=noirq' is appended to it. Anyone want to shed some light on the
 subject?

I had a laptop once, it had crappy ACPI tables in the BIOS. I had to fix
them myself using some ACPI table dumper and vi. This might also be
nescessary for your Tyan board.

I run 7 Tyan GX28 (all Dual Opteron) servers with Debian and 2.6 kernels
and never have problems with ACPI on them. Tried flashing the BIOS to
the latest available version?

Sander.

I'm gettings xfonts-utils not available but required by xfonts-100dpi
etc. dselect is quite unhappy. I guess that doesn't affect the xserver
itself though.

Hi Rafael,

Please checkout the BTS _before_ upgrading your packages:
  http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=362105

You might like to install the apt-listbugs package, it doesn't solve
your problem with xserver-xorg, it will just read and display bug
reports for you in the future.

Greetings

Yes. I even tried the latest beta version (3.02h). It didn't help.
However, a colleague of mine is running a similar board without any
problems. The only difference between his and mine is the simple fact
that his doesn't have an on-board SCSI controller. Go figure.

Accessing USB drives on a Dell PE SC430

2006-04-13 Thread Greg Gilmour
Hello,

I am trying to figure out why I am no longer able to mount a USB flash
drive on a PowerEdge SC430. I successfully installed a base Sarge system
using the image from Kenshi Muto [0]. From here I compiled a 2.6.16.1
kernel to add built-in RAID-1 support so I could do boot-on-RAID (for
which I was successful). You can find the kernel config listed at [1].
Upon upgrading to the newer kernel I am no longer able to mount and
access USB media. More details from /var/log/messages can be found at
[2]. I would appreciate anyone's input so I can resolve the issue.

Thanks.

Note: I am not a member of this list so for any responses, please CC me
a copy.

starting X interferes with NFS

2006-04-13 Thread hendrik
Yeah. I've been trying to set up X on my ASUS A8N-VM-UAYGZ system.
Its on-board graphics chip is, I believe, an GFORCE4 6300. This
machine is successfully in production use as an NFS server, serving an
80G reiser filesystem on LVM on RAID-1 to several other machines on the
LAN.

I'm using AMD64 etch with Len Sorenson's -12 kernel, and csail at MIT is
my package repository. I've managed to compile and install the
so-called nvidia-kernel, but nvidia is not one of the options I get when
running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg.

Selecting nv gets nowhere; when I boot, X tries to start
up and fails, finding no screens. But more than that, when it starts
and fails on boot, the NFS server doesn't seem to work.
remote-mounting the big partition on another machine times out.

Of the options I've tried, only vga works at all. X still doesn't
start (apparently I've specified 24-bit graphics and VGA doesn't like
it), but at least the NFS server comes up properly, and my remote users
are happy.

Is this a known problem?

Actually, I'm not completely certain whether it was nv or vesa (or
both) I was using when the NFS server failed to operate -- I'd have to
try it again to be sure, but it's getting late and my users are
complaining about yet another shutdown. I will test it again and give
more complete details, probably tomorrow.

In the meantime, if someone could tell me just what data to gather to
help in diagnosis, I'd appreciate it.

-- hendrik

P.S. Does anyone know which NFS demon does proper locking *and* handles
files larger than 4G?

What's the status of KDE in testing/etch?

2006-04-13 Thread Steve Juranich
I just installed a fresh debian system on my spankin' new Athlon 64 X2 3800.
Things have gone pretty well so far, but I guess I just hit everything at just
the right time as far as repository sanity goes.

I've tried the past couple of days to `apt-get install kde' with no joy. I
keep getting complaints like:

coffee (~)$ sudo apt-get install kde
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have

Depends: kdepim but it is not going to be installed
Depends: kdeutils but it is not going to be installed
Depends: kdewebdev but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages

So I'm assuimg this all has to do with the migration over to the main debian
FTP sites and that testing/etch will eventually catch up. Is this a correct
assumption?

If it is correct, can somebody give me a ballpark timeline when I can expect to
be able to install the etch version of KDE for this platform? I've tried
adding sarge to the repository and also had no luck.

Thanks in advance for any hints.
