Correct. Many packages currently miss in Etch.

From what I hear, a few important packages, including libc6, must be pushed
manually into Etch. Once that is done, the reste will follow automatically.

I don't know who can do that though.

amd64 bit sarge support: How long will support last?

2006-04-14 Thread Noah Dain
Apparently etch is to be released by the end of this year (2006), or
at least that is the current target.

Problem for me is, I have to set up a server to host several
virtualised environments. I _was_ planning on using amd64 sarge as
debian typically has a long release cycle, great support, etc. For
this machine though, the last thing I need is a greatly shortened
lifetime.

I'd rather not have to go to another distro for this, but I'd rather
not have management taking a big bite out of my arse come the end of
this year, or shortly thereafter.

So, does anyone have any info on the plans for amd64 sarge support?

(1) 'nvidia' does not appear on the list of drivers when I do
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg. Presumably something still needs to be
installed.

(2) 'vga' does, and works. Unfortunately, it has a lot of limitations.
I use icewm, and the tiny icons in the quarter-inch icon bar at the
bottom show up slightly more than one inch high, so only a few fit. I
can reach the 'logout' munu item, the dialog for confirming the logout
is larger than the screen, but fortunately I can reach the 'OK' button.

Seems to be (at the very least) a screen resolution problem.

(3) But 'nv', the one I'm currently trying for, still doesn't come up.
However, it no longer blocks the NFS server, which is a good thing. The
log file is appended below. The video chip I have on the motherboard is
described on the box as 'GeForce6100+nForce410'. As far as I can tell,
it's not mentioned in the huge list of devices mentioned in the log.
The key lines seem to be

(EE) No devices detected.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

>
> have a look in /var/log/Xorg.0.log (or something like that) for lines
> that match 'EE'

Here's the /var/log/Xorg.0.log, cut-and-pasted from an emacs window.
(emacs is running on a different machine from both the AMD64 with
problems and the mail software. Love networks!)

Thank you! The missing update in official means remote x-windows fails,
because it can't find xauth, and of course switching keyboards fails in
KDE. This package solved my issues.

I installed nvidia-glx 1.0.8756-3 and xserver-xorg-video-nv 1:1.0.1.5-2

not have to rebuild the nvidia kernel module. Like others, I have
residual keyboard issues because of xbase-libs not yet being upgraded; I
worked around it by creating symlinks to startx and xauth, which were no

Hi,

I've downloaded jdk-1_5_0_06-linux-amd64.bin from Sun, used apt-get to

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/java$ fakeroot make-jpkg jdk-1_5_0_06-linux-amd64.bin

I get as far as extracting the package then it fails with the following

Any idea what might be going on here?

They're for official architectures in general; while amd64 still isn't
quite on the same footing as the others, it's most of the way there,
and its binaries are available from standard locations. See also

There are two issues here.

One, which I expect will be fixed by time, effort, routine upgrades,
very much appreciated advice from this list, and a lot of my virtual
elbow grease, is tht I'm having touble getting X up.

Th other, which I think is more serious, although it will probably
affect me less, is that when C fails to start up properly at boot, it
appears to disable the NFS server. That seems to suggest
  * a serious lack of compartmentalisation in the kernel.
  * X's failure to behave properly when failing to start up.

At least for unstable this is not true anymore.
http://buildd.debian.org/stats/amd64.txt says currently it is 94.5 %
up-to-date.

What actually is the strategy for testing?

Sure, why not, for some problems: http://arrakis.ncsa.uiuc.edu/ps2/

PS3 should be lots better than this, though.

Just for my information, have been any problem compiling Xorg 7.0 for
64bits plate-forms ? (I mean problems in the compilation process that
leads to modification of the code)

In 32-bit they are already there, but 64-bit will last a little bit I suppose.

You can get nearly all xorg packages from ftp://ftp.de.debian.org.

Just add the following line to /etc/apt/source.list:

  deb http://ftp.fi.debian.org/debian unstable main contrib

However, xbase-clients is missing from the archives, which is needed to
have the correct keymap installed. I have compiled a version from
sources, which you can find here:

  http://www.fugmann.net/~afu/amd64/xbase-clients_7.0.0-2_amd64.deb

Remember also to install xkb-data, and modify the xorg configuration
file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) to use xorg keyboard rules (may installations
uses xfree86, which xorg did not complain about before).

You keyboard section should look something like this:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
Driver "kbd"
Option "CoreKeyboard"
Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
Option "XkbModel" "pc102"
Option "XkbLayout" "dk"
Option "XkbOptions""ctrl:nocaps"
EndSection

(change the model, layout and options to suit your needs).

best regards

Hans

Error in Repository ?

2006-04-14 Thread Hans
Hello dear maintainers !

Could there be an error in the Filesystem on your ftp-servers ?

I saw the following url:

http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian-amd64/debian-amd64/pool/.

Why is there the entry "debian-amd64" twice ? Does t have the same content
like .../debian-amd64/debian/... ?

And what is the correct entry dor the sources.list ? Is suppose, it is still

deb http://.../debian-amd64/debian/ sid main

I saw "debian-pure64", too.

I seem to remember somewhere in the past, something changed, does it ?

Best regards and thanks for help.

Hans
