chroot

2006-04-30 Thread sigi
Hi,

today I tried to install a chroot on my amd64-machine, but it failed...

I did it, like described here:
https://alioth.debian.org/docman/view.php/30192/21/debian-amd64-howto.html#id271960

But
debootstrap --arch i386 sid /var/chroot/sid-ia32 http://ftp.debian.org/debian/

gives the errormessage:
E: Couldn't download base-config

ignoring this and trying:
chroot /var/chroot/sid-ia32

gives this:
chroot: cannot run command `/bin/bash': No such file or directory

So, where do I get the base-config files? Are they not available
anymore? Or are they only temporary not available?

sigi.

Try it with sarge and then upgrade to side afterwards.

OK, thanks for the help, with sarge it worked... But how do I now
install something via apt-get? It only shows:

apt-get: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.6: cannot
open shared object file: No such file or directory

Do I have to download libstdc++ manually? Or do I have to set a link
somewhere for that? It's all a little bit confusing to me with this
chroot...

Or can I just use your solution with the amd64-archive in any way? I
only wanted to use the chroot for openoffice.

I updated my system to xorg7 some days ago, and since then I can't
install your openoffice.org-package, because it seems to be depending on
xfree86-common. But if I try to install this, apt says, that it
conflicts with x11-common7... Is there anything I can do about this?

VMware + Perl failure.

2006-04-30 Thread Jan Brons

Hi all,
I installed the free Server on Debian AMD64. This went without any
problems. The problem begins when I start "vmware &". The VMware
Server Console (e.x.p build-22874) pops-up and show me a "Connect to
Host" dialog. When I do a connect to localhost I get an error message:

"The local VMware Server is not installed, or is not currently running.
Make sure that the server is properly installed and try again."

I think it has to do with Perl
(/usr/lib/vmware/perl5/site_perl/5.005/i386-linux) and this AMD64
machine. I read somewhere to install some Perl 32 bit stuff, just like
ia32-libs, but I can't find which package this could be.
I posted on the VMware forum but I am not getting an answer.

I followed the instructions on this site:
http://blog.robinz.info/archives/2006/03/17/install-vmware-server-on-debian-amd64em64t/

It is installed and running:

AMD64

2006-04-30 Thread Karl Schmidt

I'm working at getting a Tyan S2877 board up and going using the net-install-cd
of unofficial sarge AMD64.

Several problems - first it would not recognize my SATA CD/DVD plextor drive
(px-755SA) - not a big deal - so I put in an older IDE drive for now.

Next, it sees the broadcom Network chips - but they fail to work.

After setting up a raid configuration it fails to boot.

I'm wondering if I should just give up on Sarge or work these out one at a time?

This board has:

dual Processors
 • Supports two AMD Opteron™ 2xx processors
 Two onboard 4-phase VRMs
 • µPGA 940-pin socket

Chipset
 • nVIDIA CrushK8-04 Professional
 • Winbond W83627HF Super I/O
 • Analog Devices (1) ADT7468 Hardware Monitoring

Integrated LAN Controllers
 • One Broadcom BCM5705 GbE LAN (G2NR)
- One RJ-45 LAN connector with LEDs
 • One Marvell 88E GbE PHY
- One RJ-45 LAN connectors with LEDs

Help... messed around with insserv

2006-04-30 Thread Wolfgang Mader
Hello,

do you know the programm insserv. It should add startup links for a program to
the different runlevels. The system on which it is use should be lsb
compabile. I thought that debian is not lsb compatible, but because the
programm was available via apt, I used it (OK it is my own fault, not to talk
about this...)

But I got a lot of messages like this:
insserv: warning: script 'bootclean' missing LSB tags
insserv: warning: script 'bootclean' missing override too

No, the most obvious problem I have is that my network is not configured by
dhcp anymore. I have to type dhcp eth1 - and the the card is set up properly.

There are a few other services which seems to be trashed by insserv. E.g.
discover is startet up two time.

I do not know anything about how to organize runlevels. Is there a way to get
this thing right, or do I have to reinstall the system?

Thank you advance. W. Mader

Once again: OOo2

2006-04-30 Thread sigi
Hi,

since I had some problems, setting up my chroot and get running again
Goswin von Brederlows openoffice-packages with amd64-archive, I found
this note on http://openoffice.debian.net/ :

"News from the OpenOffice.org amd64 porting. It is "Nothing of
production quality yet, but should be usable now". (please wait for
2.0.2-3 or 2.0.3-1)"

The 'should be usable now' passage made me hopeful and I installed the
experimental OOo-2.0.2-packages from
http://people.debian.org/~rene/openoffice.org/2.0.2/experimental

And I only wanted to mention here, that they seem to work! Until now
OO-writer only crashed after I tested the File > Wizards-buttons.

But, it looks nice, and seems almost working!

Thanks a lot out there for doing this porting...! :)

sigi.

Normaly (c)debootstrap installs the required libs for apt.
cdebootstrap even uses apt-get inside the chroot itself. Not sure what
went wrong there. The only thing that changed recently is the Sarge R2
release but I would be surprised if apt changed its depends there.

So, unless you want to debug this, just fetch the proper deb and dpkg
-i it.

There are a ton of changes in sid that amd64-archive isn't aware of
and OOo probably needs to be recompiled for it too. I'm working on an
update but I'm also waiting for things to settle down a bit as well.
