Driver for smartlink modem

2006-09-17 Thread Pepo
Hi friends.

I have a sl-modem that works very well in my 32bits Etch, but this source code
didn't work in my amd64; please Where do I can look up for am64 driver for my
sl-modem?

A lot of thanks.

Well my advice to you would be to try to find some guy with the necessary
knowledge, who is willing to maintain it.

Please note that most people who read this mailingliste are just regular users
like you and me, so it might not be the best place to look.

This is normal. Once a Debian distribution is released as 'stable', it stops
getting updates, except when it is necessary because of security issues.

Since webmin is gone from unstable and testing, it won't even be in the
next 'stable' Debian, so things are bound to get even worse. (Depending on
how you look at it.. Apparently only few people seems to be missing it.. I
can't really count myself as one of those, honestly..)

All I can say is, try to find a maintainer who is willing to do the work. It
won't be easy, let me tell you, since it's a big job, and there seems to be
so little demand for the packages.

> Maybe someone with better knowledge than me will adept the packages, this

>
> Well, I like to test it and think, other people would like to do it, too.

Let me see if I can put some structure into this task. Before it can go back
into Debian, the following is needed.

* The packages need to be 'ready' first. That means they have to do
things 'the debian way' and not mess up the configuration files of other
debian packages. This is the biggest job to accomplish. It has to happen
before a new debian package can even be considered, as I understand it. The
reason it got thrown out last time was that it didn't do things right, and
the last maintainer didn't have the time or inclination to fix it.
So someone has to take on the responsibility to test the raw system, and
report bugs and if possible supply patches. This someone has to have some
insight into how stuff are supposed to work in debian, so it's not a job for
a newbie, to be blunt.

* Once all this is in place and the stuff behaves properly, then it can be
considered for debian. And then comes the difficult task of finding someone
who is willing to maintain it.

These are both big jobs, and it's the reason why I think chances are slim to
none at seeing a debian package of webmin in the foreseable future. Sorry
dude.. :) It's not that I don't think it would be very useful to have webmin
in debian, but there are just so many stumble blocks for it to happen, that
it's not really realistic, IMHO.

Your user must be part of the plugdev group, it's right ?
gnome-volume-manager is started with your gnome-session ?
An hald deamon is running ?

Hi Russ,

as far as I know flightgear needs rendering software, just opengl.
At start it looks in its configfile, and tries to set the settings and
initialising the scenery.

IMO you MUST have an opengl-driver working ! Otherwise it will crash.

Why does the nvidia-driver not work ? It should, if you use the Debian
packages and compile the nvidia-kernel-module on your own, and, additionally
install the package nvidia-glx.

Good luck !

Hans

Hi
   One suggestion. I just came to think of that I did get a warning message
during an upgrade some days ago. There is said that I should read
/usr/share/doc/sysvinit/NEWS.Debian.gz

The messages below are starting to look like the suggestions there. I followed
the suggestions and haven't had any of the problems mentioned on the list.
I might be wrong but it is anyway a lovely reading before going to sleep:)

Flightgear crashes (the program, not the pilot)

2006-09-17 Thread Russ Cook
Flightgear crashes on startup on my system. I'm running
2.6.16-2-amd64-k8-smp generic kernel.  My system:

An Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe motherboard with AMD Athlon 4800 dual

core cpu, with 4 MB of Corsair TwinX ram sticks. I have an older
GeForce4 MX 420 graphics board with 64 MB ram. I have updated my bios
to version 1303.

I'm running Debian unstable, with latest version of Flightgear and
all required packages. I'm NOT running nvidia drivers because
they cause my system to hang. I'm also running the VESA driver,
for the same reason. I've attached the error message that Flightgear
generates on startup. Is this error indicative of the video driver I'm
using?

Thanks for any help.

Hi,

Thanks for the advice. I have purged my udev and its dependences and
reinstalled them. After some problems with the reinstallation of udev, all
works well.

No problems for the automount of my usbkey... did you have installed
gnome-volume-manager or something like that with hal package ?

About the problem of reinstalling udev, I have had to do the following :
- purge udev and its dependances
- reboot
- reinstall all (many apt/dpkg errors)
- add link in startup sysinit
update-rc.d -f udev start 03 S .
update-rc.d -f udev-mtab start 36 S .
- reboot
- make a : dpkg -a --configue
- reboot

Hi Anders !

Well, that is a pity, as IMO the idea of webmin/usermin is quite well.
It is a better thing, than "yast" in SuSE or linuxconf in RedHat, as it is
web-based.

I looked for it, and I wonderd about Debian/stable still has version 1.11 of
usermin, and webmin still 1.180, while the officialversions are 1.23 for
usermin and 1.29 for webmin. So, the Debian packages seem to me quite old.

O.k., I can download them directly from the homepage, and so this is no
problem for me ! Anyway, it would be nice, if these packages would be watched
and could be in the repostory again, as I wrote above, the way of
administrating using the way webmin does, is really a good thing.

Maybe someone with better knowledge than me will adept the packages, this
would be really nice !

[D-I] mass kernel udeb update and preparations for RC1

2006-09-17 Thread Frans Pop
(Reply-to set to debian-boot; please only add relevant port if needed.)

Dear (d-i) porters,

First mass upload of kernel udebs
=
Today I have uploaded kernel udeb updates to 2.6.17-9 _for all arches_.
This is the first time using the 'massbuild' [1] script I wrote recently.

Effectively this means that d-i porters won't really have to worry anymore
about updating kernel udebs after uploads by the kernel team.
Only if the kernel major/minor changes will I request porters to do the
upload themselves. For stable releases (including ABI changes) I intend
to do these mass builds and do the uploads myself.

Hopefully this will help the speed with which kernel udebs are updated and
allow you all to spend more time testing d-i ;-)

Of course porters are still responsible for maintaining which modules will
be included for each arch/flavor. If you have changes between kernel
major/minor releases you can either commit them and upload, or commit
them as UNRELEASED and they will be automatically included in the next
mass build.

The massbuild script can be used for single-arch builds too. Its main
advantage is that kernel images don't need to be installed and the
certainty that the correct kernel version will be used. Feel free to
contact me to help you get started.

Some comments on today's upload:
- I have used the last released version of kernel-wedge and will normally
  do that in the future too
- I have not really checked or tested the udebs [2], so there could be
  some surprises; please be alert for them
- m68k: I had to update the dependencies from kernel-image to linux-image

The road to RC1
===
We are slowly moving towards RC1. I plan to post an initial planning later
this week.
As we get closer to Etch, testing the installer for all arches gets to be
more important. Any time you can spend on that is very much appreciated.

There are some issues that need attention:
* type of initrd used
  Some arches have already switched to using initramfs for d-i initrds,
  other arches are still using cramfs or ext2. Please check if a change
  could/should be made for your architecture.
* 2.4 support now officially dropped
  Starting with RC1 d-i will no longer support 2.4 based installations.
  All arches have been switched now and some cleanup has been started;
  more cleanup is expected and this may cause unexpected breakage.
* support for non-devfs device names
  Colin Watson has committed a series of changes to make d-i support
  non-devfs device names. We will be slowly moving away from using
  devfs names, but the most intrusive work will be postponed until
  after Etch. Please check for unexpected breakage though.
* partman-auto using LVM and crypto
  partman-auto-lvm now has been available for some time, but is still
  not available for all arches. LVM support is a prerequisite for
  partman-auto-crypto support which will be uploaded soon.
  Note: swap on LVM should be possible now and is even required for
  partman-auto-crypto.
  If you would like to add support for it, please see [3]. Feel free
  to contact me or David Härdeman (Alphix) for help.

* mips: keyboard issues
  We've had a report about a dead keyboard on installation (#382983).
  This needs to be investigated.
* powerpc: oldworld boot problems with recent kernels

If there are other architecture specific issues that we should be aware
of, please let me know.

Cheers,
FJP

In reply to both Don and Martin.
I had completely expurgitated the 2.6.8 from my system,
but I downloaded it again, reinstalled it, rebooted in recovery mode,
and saved the /proc/config.gz,
then confirmed that it does indeed halt everything with shutdown -h.
The ACPI options are set as follows:

# ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) Support
CONFIG_ACPI=y
CONFIG_ACPI_BOOT=y
CONFIG_ACPI_INTERPRETER=y
# CONFIG_ACPI_SLEEP is not set
CONFIG_ACPI_AC=m
CONFIG_ACPI_BATTERY=m
CONFIG_ACPI_BUTTON=m
CONFIG_ACPI_FAN=m
CONFIG_ACPI_PROCESSOR=m
CONFIG_ACPI_THERMAL=m
CONFIG_ACPI_ASUS=m
CONFIG_ACPI_TOSHIBA=m
# CONFIG_ACPI_DEBUG is not set
CONFIG_ACPI_BUS=y
CONFIG_ACPI_EC=y
CONFIG_ACPI_POWER=y
CONFIG_ACPI_PCI=y
CONFIG_ACPI_SYSTEM=y
# CONFIG_SERIAL_8250_ACPI is not set

The CONFIG_ACPI_SLEEP option is irrelevent, as we are not
trying to send the system to sleep.

ACPI is a standard. The kernel isn't supposed to vary from board to
board. If the hardware doesnt poweroff when its told to, then its the
fault of the hardware. It's up to the manufacturer
to program their bios so their board shuts down properly.
Perhaps we should try to find a tyan s2875 that actually works
properly with multiple versions of linux. If there are none,
then we know its the fault of the board design.

Some very experimental packages

2006-09-17 Thread Gudjon I. Gudjonsson
Hi
   I have been making some packages because of need and curiousity and I am
keeping them on my private server:
deb http://mve035.mc2.chalmers.se/~gudjon/debian/amd64/ ./
The following packages can be found

kdenlive(The mlt library needs to be compiled with the
--disable-motion_est
option so some functionality is lost but everything else seems to work). I
will suggest to Marillat that he adds the amd64 to the list of supported
platform. (Unless you prove me wrong:)

gnuplot 4.1 (There is much to much new useful function to wait for that
program)

wxmaxima(This package is recompiled and it can even factorise 10!.
Refer to
older mails on the list) You need to install maxima and wxmaxima to try it
out.

openoffice.org 2.0.4 (More for fun but please use it and report bugs where
they shall go to)

ngspice and easyspice (These have been quite useful to me)

If you find it interesting, please remember that you are using it at your own
risk. I will spend more time on it during Christmas. (Now I need to do some
real work).

Regards
Gudjon

Re: Problem with Alsa

2006-09-17 Thread Sylvain Archenault
Actually, I purge udev (remove all rule files in /etc/udev/) and then
reinstall it.

At reboot, the sound card works. Remain the problem of automount. If I
plug a usbkey at boot time, it is mounted. But if I plug it after, it is
not mounted. Nevertheless, I can mount it by hand.

I'll check that.

Regards.

 Since some days, I've got problems with my sound card. The snd-* modules
 are not load at boot time.

 To fix it, I try to run alsaconf, but it still doesn't work. The modules
 are loaded after the call, but after reboot.

 In /etc/modprobe.d, I've got a sound file :
 alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
 options snd-intel8x0 index=0

 If I load snd-intel8x0 (by hand, or by adding to /etc/modules), it still
 doesn't work. I need to also run "dpkg-reconfigure alsa-base". What does
 the configure scripts of alsa-base do ?

Hi johann,

Do you also have problems with usb device ? My usb keys, ipod doesn't
mount automatically anymore. Actually the /dev/sdc devices are not created.

I suspect a problem with udev, I'm looking into it.

Regards.

Re: Problem with Alsa

2006-09-17 Thread Gudjon I. Gudjonsson
Hi
   I have been pretty happy with alsa for the last few years. It even
configured an ISA-PnP card without problems (or the only problem was my
intervention in the process:)
   There is one problem with alsa (or udev) and that is that if my webcamera
is connected to the USB port then it becomes the original sound system and I
cannot use the other system. I have tried this on two computers but just
decided to plug out my webcamera at boot time.
   Don't think it is a solution to the problems below but hope it helps.
