 I am migrating from i386 to amd64:
`chroot' stuff is certainly the best way,
but the idea to have a second system to maintain on my box afraid me.
As I really need only a couple of 32bits applications
 (acroread and maple in fact),
I prefer to play with the `/emul' stuff.

 Jerome

You can build acroread for amd64 if you simply add the architecture in
debian/control and compile. You should also add ia32-libs,
libc6-dev-i386 and ia32-libs-gtk to the Build-Depends (or at least
have them installed).

Once build and installed all that remains are bugs in ia32-libs-gtk,
or rather the 32bit libgtk2.0 and libpango. I filed bugs about both of
them. As workaround the exports will do. Same problem happens with
vmware or any other 32bit gtk app.

Hello List,

since a while I try to launch compiz.
It seems that there some conflict with sawfish:
which WindowManager may be chosen to run with compiz ?

Thanks in advance,

Hi Jerome,

I'd used Gnome + Nautilus. Nautilus, IMHO, is much better then sawfish.

With gnome (desktop), some possible window managers are metacity and
sawfish

Nautilus is the file manager of GNome.

compiz can be used as a replacmeent of sawfish/metacity

So you have to *replace* the running window manage.

for that, try:
compiz --replace

Jean-Luc

Hello,

I guess I have missed something:

compiz can be used as a replacmeent of sawfish/metacity

sawfish is launched (defaults instalation)

So you have to *replace* the running window manage.

for that, try:
compiz --replace

I get:

/usr/bin/compiz.real: Another window manager is already running on screen: 0
/usr/bin/compiz.real: No manageable screens found on display :0.0

Are you running sawfish in GNOME (or some other desktop envirnment, such
as XFCE or KDE)? AFAIK, compiz won't run by itself, it has to be run
within another desktop environment.

Hi,

right now I'm running beryl (a compiz fork), I've used repository

deb http://boisson.homeip.net/amd64/ beryl ./

As I'm using nVidia card with drivers 9625, I don't need Xgl. I just
installed beryl and launched beryl-manager. It just works.

Basically I've added this repository

deb http://boisson.homeip.net/amd64/ beryl ./

and apt-get installed beryl, emerald and beryl-manager packages. There
might have been some other packages needed, too, but I'm not sure at the
moment.

Please google for beryl debian amd64, you'll find at least this

As it has already been pointed out, compiz is meant to replace your actual
WM. Please post your /etc/X11/xorg.conf, I suspect you haven't properly
configurated it.
