Swiftfox as a flash workaround

2007-11-14 Thread Karl Schmidt
I had been using swiftfox as a flash workaround - until an upgrade killed it. There is a
work-around that gets it going again.

http://forums.getswiftfox.com/viewtopic.php?t=271&sid=be4f8b0098d76fb5c39fd623605d187d

But - I really don't like using swiftfox - not really OSS...

Does anyone here know if there will be a AMD64 flash out anytime soon so we can put an end
to these mickymouse work arounds? There must be a timetable somewhere. Or they may decided
not to - either way I sure wish I knew.

Re: sources.list help v.2

2007-11-14 Thread Max Alekseyev
Add non-free section to you sources.list, i.e. change

deb http://debian.yorku.ca/debian/ etch main
to
deb http://debian.yorku.ca/debian/ etch main non-free

and install package 'unrar' which is the latest (but non-free) version
of unrar, supporting RAR archives ver 3.x

There is a howto on making an almost fully encrypted bootable USB
flash drive. It should work just as well on an HD if you can mount
the HD on a host system and then transfer it to the real one. I say
"almost" because it leaves /boot unencrypted, iirc.

Ah, here it is:

O.k., I understand. My system is i386, but policy related things are of course
architecture independ.

querybts john. You can see five serious policy violations that prevent
john from entering testing. One of them (408152) is related to AMD64.
FTBFS means "failure to build from source". In other words: john doesn't
compile on AMD64.

As far as I know, this issue has been ignored (insofar as no actions
have been taken) by the Debian project and the mirror operators. Und das
ist gut so[tm].

enxcryption of the whole system

2007-11-14 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Hi all,
I do not know, if I dare to ask some question here, as it is not real amd64
related. Well, I try it...

I want to encrypt my whole system = all partitions. I only found Debian
related howto, which only tell me it, to do this during the installation
(using LVM and so on), As I have installed my whole system already and do not
format and reinstall my partitions, I would like to encrypt it now.

Just my questions:
1. Is this possible at all ? (I would prefer dm_crypt)
2. Must I use LVM ?
3. In case, I have to reformat my partitions, can I backup my datas to another
host (i.e. with rsync), and play it onto the enrypted filesystem back to the
encrypted partitions ?

Thank you very, very much for any help !

Best regards

Hans

sources.list help v.2

2007-11-14 Thread Dave Stevens
I have a friend with a new debian amd-64 install. He has unrar-free but it
won't open RAR 3.0 files. It looks like it would be worthwhile to try unrar
but I am not able to get appropriate access for synaptic.

I went to:
http://packages.debian.org/sid/unrar/amd64/download

and tried adding a line to /etc/apt/sources.list as suggested at that page but
get error warnings when starting synaptic. The error text is:

W: Couldn't stat source package list
http://http.us.debian.org sarge/main Packages
(/var/lib/apt/lists/http.us.debian.org_debian_dists_sarge_main_binary-amd64_Packages)
- stat (2 No such file or directory)
W: Couldn't stat source package list
http://http.us.debian.org sarge/non-free Packages
(/var/lib/apt/lists/http.us.debian.org_debian_dists_sarge_non-free_binary-amd64_Packages)
- stat (2 No such file or directory)
W: Couldn't stat source package list
http://http.us.debian.org sarge/contrib Packages
(/var/lib/apt/lists/http.us.debian.org_debian_dists_sarge_contrib_binary-amd64_Packages)
- stat (2 No such file or directory)

the current sources.list file is:

deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 r1 _Etch_ - Official
amd64 DVD Binary-1 20070819 -12:16]/ etch contrib main

deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 r1 _Etch_ - Official
amd64 DVD Binary-1 20070819 -12:16]/ etch contrib main

deb http://debian.yorku.ca/debian/ etch main
deb-src http://debian.yorku.ca/debian/ etch main

deb http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main
contrib
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main
contrib
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ sarge main
non-free contrib

The net effect is that searching
for unrar gives only the already installed unrar-free. I have the .deb
package for unrar but installing it fails due to a dependency error.

Can someone point me to a tutorial or explain how to get better information
about the problem? This is what I got from uname:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ uname -a
Linux debianroger 2.6.18-5-amd64 #1 SMP Tue Oct 2 20:37:02 UTC 2007 x86_64
GNU/Linux

Thanks very much.

Dave

Where is john ?

2007-11-14 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Hi all,

I am running debian/testing on my server. But where is it now ?
I wondered, because it was in testing some time, but now it is gone, although
it is already (or still ?) in sid. What happened ?

Just another question: Are packages on German mirrors affected by the German
laws relating to hacker paragraphs ? (STGB §202)

In this case, I would like to change to FREE mirrors.

Best regards

Hans-J. Ullrich
