Re: 3com pci-x nic not configuring
Quoting [EMAIL PROTECTED]: I guess everything is okay, but its confusing why I've lost access to eth0. A little googling helped me find this: host:/etc/udev/rules.d# cat z25_persistent-net.rules # This file was automatically generated by the /lib/udev/write_net_rules # program, probably run by the persistent-net-generator.rules rules file. # # You can modify it, as long as you keep each rule on a single line. # MAC addresses must be written in lowercase. # PCI device 0x1186:0x4b00 (sky2) SUBSYSTEM=="net", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTRS{address}=="00:00:5a:70:85:cd", NAME="eth0" # PCI device 0x8086:0x1096 (e1000) SUBSYSTEM=="net", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTRS{address}=="00:15:17:2a:b2:c9", NAME="eth2" # PCI device 0x8086:0x1096 (e1000) SUBSYSTEM=="net", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTRS{address}=="00:15:17:2a:b2:c8", NAME="eth1" # PCI device 0x10b7:0x9200 (3c59x) SUBSYSTEM=="net", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTRS{address}=="00:01:03:c3:9d:98", NAME="eth3" # PCI device 0x14e4:0x1645 (tg3) SUBSYSTEM=="net", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTRS{address}=="00:0a:5e:50:44:f5", NAME="eth4" So it appears that its holding my old dlink (sky2 driver) for eth0. Cheers, Mike
Re: 3com pci-x nic not configuring
Quoting C Wakefield <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: upgrade your kernel first, support for your pci-x bridge and 3Com chipset is then more likely. Also make sure it's not disabled in the bios for some reason. If those conditions are satified, then it'll be a module or driver issue most likely. I checked a bit more in the logs and now noticed that my new 3com 3c996b-t did come up, but as eth4. This is wierd to me. So, I now have eth1,eth2,eth3 and eth4. eth1 = onboard intel nic eth2 = onboard intel nic eth3 = 3com 905 nic (old PCI slot) eth4 = 3com 3c996b-t nic (PCI-X slot) eth0 shows up in the boot logs, but I can't seem to use it for any nic. host:~# dmesg |grep eth0 e1000: eth0: e1000_probe: Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Connection eth0: Tigon3 [partno(3C996B-T) rev 0105 PHY(5701)] (PCIX:100MHz:64-bit) 10/100/1000BaseT Ethernet 00:0a:5e:50:44:f5 eth0: RXcsums[1] LinkChgREG[0] MIirq[0] ASF[0] Split[0] WireSpeed[1] TSOcap[0] eth0: dma_rwctrl[76db000f] dma_mask[64-bit] Eth0 was previously a dlink card on a pci-e slot, I removed it and put a 3com into the pci-X slot. My /etc/network/interfaces file just has normal static stanzas like: auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address x.x.x.x network x.x.x.x broadcast x.x.x.x netmask x.x.x.x and so on and so forth for eth1, eth2, eth3. (eth3 has an extra "gateway" line) I have thus edited eth0 into eth4 to make things work again. I guess everything is okay, but its confusing why I've lost access to eth0. Cheers, Mike

No I know of no GUI way to do it. Without a backup of all that very important data to save, I wouldn't have fooled with anything anyway. With a backup, I would have just reinstalled and restored from backup. Doug. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

3com pci-x nic not configuring
Hello, Have a 3com 3c996b-t PCI-X that won't come up for me. (broadcom chip on nic) Running amd64 etch with kernel 2.6.18-5 stock kernel. Here's the output from lshw: [snip] *-pci:1 description: PCI bridge product: 6311ESB/6321ESB PCI Express to PCI-X Bridge vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 0.3 bus info: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:00.3 version: 01 width: 32 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pci normal_decode bus_master cap_list *-network DISABLED description: Ethernet interface product: NetXtreme BCM5701 Gigabit Ethernet vendor: Broadcom Corporation physical id: 2 bus info: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:02.0 logical name: eth4 version: 15 serial: 00:0a:5e:50:44:f5 capacity: 1GB/s width: 64 bits clock: 66MHz capabilities: bus_master cap_list ethernet physical mii 10bt 10bt-fd 100bt 100bt-fd 1000bt 1000bt-fd autonegotiation configuration: autonegotiation=on broadcast=yes driver=tg3 driverversion=3.65 duplex=half latency=64 link=no mingnt=64 multicast=yes port=twisted pair resources: iomemory:b890-b890 irq:82 ifconfig only shows eth1, eth2, and eth3. (Total of 4 nics) Just eth0 is missing. (my old eth0 was a dlink) Any help to get this 3com activated would be great! lshw shows that its disabled, but have no idea how to re-activate it. Thanks! encryption of the whole system (update)
Hi all, I now got my system encrypted ( I used dm-crypt) without loosing data. It needed a lot of work and time. But now almost every thing is working fine. Besides, there is just one thing, I got not managed: moving and resizing the encrpted partitions. I tried a livefilesystem and gparted (as I dare not to use the commandline tool), but gparted always tries to check the filesystem. But there is no filesystem recognizable dute to the encryption. As gparted cannot end its procedure, it hangs and the changes get reverted. What can I do ? Partitions are now: /dev/sda3 /boot unencrypted /dev/sda6 / unencrypted /dev/sda7 /home encrypted, /dev/sda8 /usrencrpyted /dev/sda9 /varencrypted All encrypted partitions shall be moved and resized. Any help will be very, very welcome !! Best regards Hans -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

openoffice
Hello, I have Lenny with the 2.6.23-8 kernel at home and have OpenOffice 2.2.1 installed on my system. Today, I had to go home earlier than expected and so, I took some work with me. I am working on a database under OObase at my work and I thought I just have to send it to my home, open it and continue my work. Now it seems that it is not working: OOo gets well open but after this does not react any more. I read on some threads that it could be a compatibility problem with the nvidia driver or just a bug in the 64bit debian(lenny) version of OOo. Any idea on how to solve this?
