I use the Primary Debian mirror site (ftp.debian.org) for installing Etch
amd64... but more files is missing on site.

Hmm... I have had problems from time to time downloading CD and DVD images
from the repositories using jigdo - occasionally it failed due to some missing
files. I think I solved it by changing to a different mirror site.

Are you using a net install CD? You can also start a net install off from some
floppy disks if you are using a really old machine.

What sort of box are you using?

I can't install Etch on my computer and I have only this computer. Please help
me!!!

When you say you only have one machine, is there any other OS on it? Are you
trying to set up a dual boot situation with e.g. MS Windows and Debian Etch?

If you do have MS Windows working on part of the machine at present, you could
use e.g. jigdo or bittorrent etc to download the CD or DVD images for Debian
instead of doing a net install if it doesn't seem to work. You wouldn't need
to download all the CD or DVD's.

The first DVD image would probably be enough. It would take a bit longer but
then you can install the OS from the DVD. Providing you get the whole image
intact (check in the Debian installer with the CD integrity option) then you
won't get missing file error messages etc.

I don't have other OS like winzoz on the PC. to write this mail I'm using a
little laptop with debian etch i386 and i've not any problem. but I want my
 64 bit pc... damn'it!

OK So you do have another machine and it is running etch i386 But you
bought a 64 bit box and are trying to install the amd64 version of Etch on it.
Fair enough.

I've already dowloaded any cd images for 64bit but do not run.

Hang on a minute here. When you say you already downloaded some 64 bit CD
images, which ones were they? If you only downloaded the netinstall CD, then
you need to check it has no errors on it.

I have downloaded iso files for Linux distributions in the past and burned the
CDs and then discovered they had errors on them caused by imperfect CD copying
of the data.

Provided enough of the netinstall CD is perfectly burned to run the Debian
installer then you can run it and then select for the integrity option to get
the installer to scan all the way through the CD to check that it was produced
perfectly with no copying errors. If there any errors on it then the
installation process won't work and you won't be able to install the OS.

You say you also copied other CD images. The same thing is needed here. I
scan every CD I have burned using the installer to check the integrity of each
copied image. Only then do I try to install the OS.

Hope this helps.

Well, the ftp.debian.org mirror is depreciated. Use another mirror.
See the debian website for a list of mirrors: choose one close to you.

If you have any CD other than the businesscard.iso then you can install
a minimal system without any further network during the install. Once
you reboot, you can set up networking and choose a better mirror.

I suspect that either:

(1) A gcc binary is corrupted - use debsums to check this
(2) Your computer has a hardware fault that causes data corruption - see
http://www.bitwizard.nl/sig11/ for some hints on troubleshooting (though
this is quite old)

I think the problem is only for 64bit releases... I have an etch 32 bit in a

I think there's a whole discussion list that can disagree with you
regarding the problem with amd64 releases. Your complaints aren't
very informative either and there are hundreds of mirrors to choose
from, i'm sure ONE of them oughta work. Have you tried the ones on
this list?
http://www.us.debian.org/mirror/list
Are you burning your ISOs properly or just dragging them onto a blank
CD? What exactly does happen if you try to boot an instalation CD? It
yells at you or something?

Do you mean that you can't get the iso to install? If so, then the
problem isn't the mirror. IIRC, you said that your friend already made
the CD for you from a debian mirror.

Confused perhaps.

Start at the beginning. Tell us the name of the CD; i.e. if you can,
the URL from which it was burned.

Put it into the machine and power it on. What happens?

Have you read the installation manual?

It's similar to using AltGr, but not the same. With AltGr you can only
do one special character per key, so you're limited to about 50 total.
And if they're not already labeled on your keyboard you have to remember
which key is used for which character. A compose key puts you into a
special entry mode. So, with the ê example above, assuming you're using
the right Win key as your Compose Key:

Push (and release) the right Win key
Type the letter e
Type the character ^

What you'll see appear on the terminal is ê.

Here's instructions on how to set it up system-wide:

http://www.linuxhowtos.org/Tips%20and%20Tricks/compose.htm

To set it per-user you can use either xmodmap, setxkbmap, or if you're
using Gnome or KDE, you can set it through the GUI tools. (In Gnome, for
example, go to System - Preferences - Keyboard - Layout Options)

P.S. It's better to reply to the list than directly to the individual
poster. The more people that see your message the more likely that it
will be answered.
