Re: NetworkManager not working

2007-08-06 Thread Daniel Foote
NetworkManager 0.6.4 is not detecting my ethernet card (gnome) in my
new HP Compaq dc7700 pc (running lenny amd64) and shows an error icon on
the notification panel. Networking is ok but I have to manually activate
network connection in some programs such as evolution, which is a bit a
 pain in the neck.
I was wondering if it can be somehow configured to detect the eth card
 or just uninstalled.

NetworkManager is a finicky thing. Is this a new install?

NetworkManager (in the past, at least) ignores cards that are set to
automatically come up in /etc/network/interfaces. (Look for the line
auto lo eth0 and take out the interface that you want NetworkManager
to look after).

(I just got a new laptop, and it just worked for me, but this is the
first install where NetworkManager was one of the first things I
installed, so there was no manual settings for the network at all,
other than that required for the install).

Hope this helps...

Re: compiz windows without borders

2006-11-17 Thread Daniel Foote

Hello.

I followed this guide to install compiz on debian unstable:

http://wiki.debian.org/Compiz

(and other 2 little guides not in english)

but when I launch from shell compiz --replace window borders
vanishing and windows are not more clickable.

I use nvidia 5700 with last drivers available on unstable repository.

Have you any idea?

Unlike most other window managers, compiz does not draw window borders.

Instead, drawing window borders is handled by gnome-window-decorator
or gtk-window-decorator. You should start that before compiz.

Hope that helps...

Re: Large font when booting into linux when using NVIDIA card

2006-08-25 Thread Daniel Foote

Ever since I have built my first x86 box (AMD64) I have not been able to get my
initial font size down from the about 1 size. I have included in my grub the
following line

..root=/dev/hda1 ro video=nvidiafb:vmode:22 quiet splash

Using 'video=nvidiafb:vmode:22' does not make a difference with the video. I
would love to use the TTYs more but with such large text on the terminal it
becomes very annoying.

I've just been using vga=795 on the grub command line. That jumps the
display into 1280x1024 mode, and fits as much text as possible. A bit
of googling will find you other values that you might be able to use.

See if that solves the problem for you.

Have fun...

Re: Problem with recent udev upgrade (0.097-1)

2006-08-19 Thread Daniel Foote

This morning, I upgraded udev to 0.097-1 from 0.093-1. After reboot,
I've got problem with my usb mouse and my usb wifi adapter. I solved
those problems by adding the corresponding module to /etc/modules.

I still have problems with my sound card (Realtek ALC850 on Asus K8N-E
Deluxe board), I can't find the correct module. I was thinking it was
snd-intel_8x0, but it doesn't works fine.

On boot time, i noticed a lot of errors coming from udev, telling an
error occurred while look up for group audio (but also nogroup), the
reason is illegal seek (I don't find those lines in log files). Those
errors might the cause of my problem.

I hate to me too these emails, but I've seen the same problem. I
have three boxes with this problem here - 1 AMD64 box and two 32bit
boxes. All of them don't see the USB mouse upon boot. Upon unplugging
and replugging the mouse they work ok. I also lost the sound card on
one of the 32bit boxes.

But that's ok... what's the fun of running unstable if this doesn't
happen every so often? (This doesn't affect me much at the moment).

Have fun...

Re: Mount USB memory stick in 32 bit chroot as well

2006-01-04 Thread Daniel Foote
The directory is created after inserting the stick, but there is only
one file in there (.created_by_pmount). Following your recipe didn't
  change anything, unfortunately.

I can't tell if you answered the question or not. Does the directory show
up in the chroot environment? If so, then your problem lies elsewhere,
 like maybe a permissions thing.

I have not had time to completely figure it out yet, but you might
want to look into rbind mounts instead of plain bind mounts. When I
set up my chroot I bind mounted /home into the chroot, but then found
that when I mounted files from my fileserver (mounted to
/home/daniel/Remote), I couldn't see them in the chroot. (ie, ooffice
~/Remote/foo.odt fails with File not Found. ooffice is symlinked to
the do_chroot script)

Unmounting /chroot/home and remounting it as -o rbind did the trick.
I attempted to make this permanent with a change in fstab, but it
didn't seem to work there - only when I did it manually. When I get
time I'll have another look at it and see if I can't make it work.

There is some magic to the mounting to make it work. You can
apparently do it as a bind mount if the original mounpoint is
shared (but not if it's not). There is some documentation:
http://lwn.net/Articles/159092/ .

This would also explain why you can mount /media in the chroot, but
then not see any submounts.

Hope this helps...

Daniel.

(Apologies to Andrew; you'll get two of these. I keep forgetting to
reply to all instead of reply.)

Re: Hello! from a newbie+ problems with debian for amd64+can't boot debian for i386 on amd64 from cd+can't extract sbm.bin from cd

2005-11-28 Thread Daniel Foote
Hello...

Just to add my little bit...

I recently bought a new machine, which was NForce4 based, like yours.
When I did my net install, it could not get an address (DHCP, from a
machine on my internal net). I didn't set it manually.

Instead, I went to a terminal (hit CTRL+ALT+F2 during the install).
Perusing dmesg revealed that eth0 was the ieee1394 (firewire) ethernet
- which I was not using.

modprobe -r'ed the appropriate modules to make it free eth0, and then
I modprobed forcedeth, which registered itself as eth0. After that,
CTRL+ALT+F1 back into the install, and retry the automatic network
setup. Worked perfectly after that.

I don't recall if forcedeth was already loaded as eth1 - if so, just
modprobe -r that as well, and then reinsert it once the eth0 slot is
free.

(I was impressed that I could do this - I can't think of too many
other installers that would allow sorting out of a problem like this
that early in the install).

Hope this helps someone else...

Daniel Foote.

 Hi!

Don't think its a good way to trying to extract something, may

you've burned your cd in a wrong way. Did you setup your
burning software in the correct way to create a bootable image?
Definitely! A while later I realised I was dumbly copying
the .iso file to a cd instead of burning an image.
Besides, I was trying to extract the file into the cd-rom instead of, say,
 the desktop.
Anyway, I've finally burnt the cd and it more or less works
(though I had to type linux26,otherwise it wouldn't recognise my ethernet
card) Now the problem is that I can't connect to the mirrors to complete the
 installation (it says temporal error).

I had to set the internet configuration manually, so I may have done a
mistake, but I don't know where.
I'm re-installing the amd64 version, which at least can set the internet
 configuration automatically,

and download nearly all packages (except security updates, among others
 !!).
if you are a real newby, you may wait until december. As I knew debian
 etch

should be finished in december, and there amd64 should be one of the
 standard
  supported systems.

That's cool! I thought it would take a bit longer.
Anyway, I have nothing better to install on my drive,

so I'll try to get used to Debian now,
and then, when Etch is released, I'll give it a try.

 Thanks for your help!
