After installing amd64 Debian on a SunFire x2100 I shelled into it to continue and the ethernet link failed. Mystified, I reloaded the forcedeth driver (eth0) without a problem but the interface still would not work. There were no other sign of failure other than it just did not work. The other interface (eth1) was fine. Rebooting did not help but power cycling did the trick. This happens at random times and power cycling corrects the problem.
