Try gcc-3.4. The package name doesn't change for each minor version.

Do it anyhow. I have never had a problem as long as x.y matches. .z

I am afraid I do not understand your question. There should be only
one locales package and apt-get install locales, possibly adding
the -f flag to apt-get if necessary, ought to just install the
appropriate version for your installation. It should be the same package
version as the libc6 you have installed, since they come from the same
source package. As to which locale to choose when installing the package
and debconf asks, well, that's up to you. You can choose a national
locale of your liking (I use [EMAIL PROTECTED] as a default, since I am
Italian, but also keep all other Italian locales and all English locales
available, as a fall back) or just leave it unset, which uses the default

Ok, I did not realize this was your problem previously. Use the command
 dpkg -l libc6
to get the version of libc6 you have, then look in for it in your
 favourite debian mirror (e.g.
 http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/main/g/glibc/), download the
locales package with the same version number as your libc6, install
 it with dpkg -i locales_whatever_version_it_is.deb

never _ever_ install something with dpkg -x! This calls dpkg-deb and
just unpacks the contents of an archive without registering them in
the package system nor doing any needed cnfiguration! Do read the
man page of dpkg and use it properly, since it is seriously capable
of hosing your system is used in the wrong way. The right way to
install a package with dpkg is dpkg -i, to remove one dpkg -r,
to remove the package and all its configurations dpkg --purge.

Let me stress this again, do read and understand the man pages of dpkg
before using it directly, unless you don't care risking to make your
 system unusable.

 Hello,

the executable you have to run is called 'wmShutdown' and not

Re: scsi tape

2005-08-28 Thread DR GAVIN SEDDON
Yes, I prefer tar since it only backs up files, not file systems. I can
read and have different compression. Amongst all the other utilities.
My controler is
':02:06.0 SCSI storage controller: Initio Corporation 360P (rev

Gavin.

It seems your SCSI tape module loads fine but you have not loaded any

What kind of SCSI controller do you have? lspci might tell you what
controller it is and then you can load the appropriate module.
When that is done try to insert a tape and then type `eject /dev/st0'.

If that works you can use your tapedrive. Use tar, cpio, taper, mt or
whatever to make your backups (see the appropriate manpages for info on
 how to use them).
 Personally I prefer tar.

You need to load the module st (as stated earlier), e.g. with modconf.

No, the kernelmodule st. Try `modprobe st'.

This isn't likely to have any answers where AMD64 is particularly relevant.

In principle, you might try using ipchains/iptables to cease access to
ports that access services that outsiders oughtn't access.

If they are trying plain old ssh, and there's a lot of password
guessing going on, you might consider configuring it to accept only
ssh keys for authentication. That would doubtless add a certain
inconvenience factor, but keep password guessing from being AT ALL
 effective as an attack...

Did you tell sshd to disable all authentication methods other than pam?
I think by default it also does its own authentication against the

The reason for wanting it running oon 64 bit is: I have a demanding win
app that I need to run. The alternative is buy the pgf compiler. I
don;t want to.
Thanks
Gavin.

Re: how to: chroot 32bit (forgot one thing)

2005-03-30 Thread Dr Gavin Seddon
Hi,
Would it not be advantagious to add a 32bit sources.list similar to that
in the howto for 64bit. Also, I found it easier to add
alias 32bit 'dchroot -c ia32 -d'
to my .cshrc to make things easier. Since I need to run various 32 bit
apps in terminals, it gives me 'freedom'. Would a command like this for
csh and bash not be useful in the howto? Or, would 'people' just
complain iff they had 'other' shells?
Gavin.

 Hi Erik,

you are talking about mounting the chroot. i think that you are talking
about the point where it is explained how to mount some partions like
/home INTO the chroot - this ist necessary.
Because without this mounts you wouldn't be able to save date in your
home dir because it isn't available in the chroot.

here is my sources.list i use in my chroot:

deb ftp://ftp.de.debian.org/debian sarge main contrib non-free

for most things this ist enough.
(maybe you find a better one for your country, because this one contains
 the german server)

every time when you type chroot /var/chroot/sid-ia32 you chang into
your chroot. by typing exit you will be back at your original session.

If you now have forgotten some options just exit from the chroot, do
what you have to do and than type again: chroot /var/chroot/sid-ia32

 sorry for my bad english

 Hi again,

 I forgot one question:

You also need a link to your 32bit linker in the /lib path. Change in
to directory /lib and create a link to the 32bit linker library of your
chroot: (The name of the 64bit linker is ld-linux-x86-64.so.2)

According to the instructions I entered the chroot. Do I have to exit
 the chroot, or not?
Why not write down the complete command, so newbies (like me) can just
 copy and paste the command?

 Thanx, Erik

There is the possibility of mounting it.
Which instructions should be left out, if I don't want have it
 mounted?

Why not add a valid /etc/sources.list for the 32bit applications? (Just
to start easily; who then knows better can always use a better one)
For example, I could not find the package libx11-6.

The command chroot /var/chroot/sid-ia32 is twice on that page.
Didn't I already chroot? Is it needed twice?

Re: chroot problem with certain apps

2005-03-26 Thread Dr Gavin Seddon
Hi,
This may seem silly. I had the same problems, that is k3b not working
and selective things running on 32bit chroot. Oddly this stopped when I
changed from windowmaker to the kde desktop. In short it could be your
gui causing the problems.

Gavin.

 Hi,

I installed 32bit sid in a chroot at /var/chroot/sid-ia32 as explained
in the AMD64 HOWTO. It seems to work, and I can do various things in
the chroot (such as run acrobat reader, etc.). I also installed i386
debian on an unusued partition, and most things work when I chroot
into that. What I cannot do is run certain programs, such as k3b and
skype in either chroots, even though I can run them when I boot into
my i386 partition. (I can't run k3b normally, which is why I tried to
run it in a chroot, and why I finally did a i386 install on the other
partition). When I run skype or k3b in the chroot, they shows up in
the window, but the mouse has no effect on it; I can't click on
anything in the program. When I run strace skype I get an endless
 loop of:
 select(6, [3 5], [], [], {0, 99619})= 0 (Timeout)
 gettimeofday({765453, 528985}, NULL) = 0
 gettimeofday({765453, 529021}, NULL) = 0
When I run strace k3b i get a similar endless loop:
 select(17, [3 4 6 8 9 12 16], [], [], {0, 49528}) = 0 (Timeout)
 gettimeofday({765287, 679388}, NULL) = 0
 gettimeofday({765287, 679425}, NULL) = 0
When not in chroot and I run strace k3b, I get endless loops of:
 select(17, [3 4 6 8 9 12 16], [], [], {0, 49722}) = 0 (Timeout)
 ioctl(3, FIONREAD, [0])
I can't understand why these programs would work when I boot into
i386, but not work under a chroot. Since k3b won't work normally
(without chroot), I wonder if I'm needing to fix something outside the
chroot and in my normal system settings.
(I've noticed that both programs depend on libgt3c102-mt)

 Any help would be appreciated.

 Ric

chroot working/vmware not

2005-03-22 Thread Dr Gavin Seddon
Hi, all my problems with k3b, konsole were fixed by using kde rather
than windowmaker. Chroot is working, that is I can use openoffice.
However, when I try and run vmware I get
'Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by C library', as it starts and
then it runs and when I attempt to start a virtual machine I get
'Could not open /dev/vmmon: No such device.
Please make sure that the kernel module `vmmon' is loaded.

Failed to initialize monitor device.'

Is this a problem with chroot or vmware?
Thanks
Gavin.

Is this a 32bit lib? If not how do I get it for amd64?
Alternativley, I have the prog. source. To build it it requires pgf77.
Which I haven't got. Is there an alternative?

downgrade to sarge

2005-03-03 Thread Dr Gavin Seddon
Hi,
I have decided to downgrade to sarge. On of the beutiful things about
Debian, I just need to modify /etc/apt/sources.list and 'dist upgrade'.
I was browsing
http://alioth.debian.org/docman/view.php/30192/21/debian-amd64-howto.html#installation
for sites for my sources file. Here they are all for sid. Also the doc
says only unstable is available. Why is this? And what are decent
sites for my sources file, pls?
Thanks
gs
Oh yes, if I downgradde will it automatically use 2.4 kernel, or will I
need to install this?

xserver not working

2005-02-22 Thread Dr Gavin Seddon
Hi,
I thought I had better post this. I was reviewing
my /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file in preparation for editing. I noted it
was 'not usual' as it was generated by the Knoppix software. So, I
reinstalled all. When I was setting up the X server again I chose a lcd
monitor (this has worked before) and to my astonishment all works fine.
Everything else I did was identical.

Thanks to all who replied to this thread.
