This calls dpkg-deb and just unpacks the contents of an archive without registering them in the package system nor doing any needed cnfiguration! Do read the man page of dpkg and use it properly, since it is seriously capable of hosing your system is used in the wrong way. The right way to install a package with dpkg is dpkg -i, to remove one dpkg -r, to remove the package and all its configurations dpkg --purge. Let me stress this again, do read and understand the man pages of dpkg before using it directly, unless you don't care risking to make your system unusable. Hello, the executable you have to run is called 'wmShutdown' and not 'wmshutdown' like the packagename. You can find all filenames of the package wmshutdown with 'dpkg -L wmshutdown'. remote display not working
Hi, I'm trying to run software on a machine at work, remotely from my debian box here. I 'xhost +remote.machine.name' ssh onto the remote box. On this it is tcsh. Once logged on I 'setenv DISPLAY 192.168.0.3:0.0' which is my ip. It will still not start the application display. It always tells me to run apt-get update though. For text editing/processing I have started using Kile/latex it prodoces nice results but I haven't mastered it fully yet. Finally I'm sure I read on the list sid is more suitable for amd than sarge. vmware in 64 bit enviroment
Hi, Vmware runs on a chroot. But I want 64bit capability. Some time ago I bought vmware 4.52 and according to their w-site it will run on amd64. So I tried to install. All is ok until just after the header files bit. Then it fails to build vmmon.o. I have tried to get a precompiled module to put into my running kernel. No success. Can anyone help? The reason for wanting it running oon 64 bit is: I have a demanding win app that I need to run. The alternative is buy the pgf compiler. I don;t want to. Also, I found it easier to add alias 32bit 'dchroot -c ia32 -d' to my .cshrc to make things easier. Since I need to run various 32 bit apps in terminals, it gives me 'freedom'. Would a command like this for csh and bash not be useful in the howto? Or, would 'people' just complain iff they had 'other' shells? Gavin. Hi, This may seem silly. I had the same problems, that is k3b not working and selective things running on 32bit chroot. Oddly this stopped when I changed from windowmaker to the kde desktop. Since k3b won't work normally (without chroot), I wonder if I'm needing to fix something outside the chroot and in my normal system settings. Hi, all my problems with k3b, konsole were fixed by using kde rather than windowmaker. Chroot is working, that is I can use openoffice. However, when I try and run vmware I get 'Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by C library', as it starts and then it runs and when I attempt to start a virtual machine I get 'Could not open /dev/vmmon: No such device. Please make sure that the kernel module `vmmon' is loaded. Failed to initialize monitor device.' Is this a problem with chroot or vmware? Hi, I am trying to run a program and it fails as 'libg2c.so.0' is missing. Is this a 32bit lib? If not how do I get it for amd64? Alternativley, I have the prog. source. still probs with display in chroot
Hi, I understand this prob of mine must be an incorrect chrot setup. But I followed the distructions. I have the /newroot/etc/fstab setup as instructed. The error I get is 'debian1:/# oowriter Xlib: connection to :0.0 refused by server Xlib: No protocol specified I18N: Operating system doesn't support locale Xlib: connection to :0.0 refused by server Xlib: No protocol specified /usr/lib/openoffice/program/soffice.bin X11 error: Can't open display: :0.0 Set DISPLAY environment variable, use -display option or check permissions of your X-Server (See man X resp. man xhost for details)'. Hi, I have installed the chroot enviroment and changed into it. I tried to use apt and found I have no sources.list. Is this normal and do I need to write my own? chroot from ia64 not working

When I chroot into 32bit nothing opens due to display errors. downgrade to sarge
Hi, I have decided to downgrade to sarge. On of the beutiful things about Debian, I just need to modify /etc/apt/sources.list and 'dist upgrade'. I was browsing http://alioth.debian.org/docman/view.php/30192/21/debian-amd64-howto.html#installation for sites for my sources file. Here they are all for sid. Also the doc says only unstable is available. Why is this? And what are decent sites for my sources file, pls? xserver not working
Hi, I thought I had better post this. I was reviewing my /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file in preparation for editing. I noted it was 'not usual' as it was generated by the Knoppix software. So, I reinstalled all. When I was setting up the X server again I chose a lcd monitor (this has worked before) and to my astonishment all works fine. Everything else I did was identical.
