how to: chroot 32bit

2005-03-30 Thread Erik Norman
Hello,

I wanted to point out that I had (still have) some problems to
UNDERSTAND the how to-instructions to set up a chroot-environment for
the 32bit applications.

There is the possibility of mounting it.
Which instructions should be left out, if I don't want have it
mounted?

Why not add a valid /etc/sources.list for the 32bit applications? (Just
to start easily; who then knows better can always use a better one)
For example, I could not find the package libx11-6.

The command chroot /var/chroot/sid-ia32 is twice on that page.
Didn't I already chroot? Is it needed twice?

Erik

Re: how to: chroot 32bit (forgot one thing)

2005-03-30 Thread Erik Norman
Hi again,

I forgot one question:

You also need a link to your 32bit linker in the /lib path. Change in
to directory /lib and create a link to the 32bit linker library of your
chroot: (The name of the 64bit linker is ld-linux-x86-64.so.2)

According to the instructions I entered the chroot. Do I have to exit
the chroot, or not?
Why not write down the complete command, so newbies (like me) can just
copy and paste the command?

Thanx, Erik

desktop problems

2005-03-08 Thread Erik Norman
Hello,

I don't know why,
I logged off saving my session.
When I logged on again I got a error message that a program (aMule) was
not able to be opened automatically.
Then I discovered that my desktop had disappeared.
No background image (just a dizzy grey), no possibility of clicking with
the right mouse button to open the menu (useful for opening a terminal
etc.), no wastebasket, no folders.

I guess/hope it won't be difficult to restore it or to
uninstall-reinstall it, but I don't know where to start.

Which x-win do you use? gnome or KDE?
Are you sure ALL necessary file are installed?

If you use gnome, try to start, open a terminal and launch nautilus

Then just type nautilus by itself, and a second or two later
(depending on speed), you should have your desktop back.

If not, in your terminal, type su -, then when prompted enter your
 root password. Type this:
 apt-get install nautilus

That will install nautilus if you don't have it. After downloaded, type
exit in terminal (to exit out of Super-User mode), then try running
 nautilus again.

 Hopefully this will work.. :)

There is no flash player for amd64. From
 http://sluglug.ucsc.edu/macromedia/faq.html:

*10. Where is Flash for PowerPC or x86-64 Linux?*

It does not exist probably because Macromedia management feel there
 is no demand. Contact Macromedia
 http://www.macromedia.com/macromedia/contact/ and express your
opinion if you truly care about this. Also buy more x86-64 hardware
(AMD64, not the crap Intel stuff) to make the platform truly
lucrative for software makers in a business sense.

There is libflash-swfplayer, an open-source one, but it's very, very buggy.

NPTL-only. With LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 glibc tries to load
LinuxThreads instead and that isn't available.

I am not sure if this is related to our installations or if it is a

The script should be patched for amd64, all existing amd64 VMs work
 fine with NPTL

In addition, I get problems when using the java blackdown plugin

Looks like a conflict over /usr/lib64. I'm having the same problem right
now, but between libc6 and base-files, and I've hosed my system. (I'm sure I
just made a large majority of the list groan and/or laugh at me.) My
understanding is that you can force the install with dpkg, using the
 following:

 dpkg - dpkg --force-overwrite -i
 /var/cache/apt/archives/libc6_2.3.2.ds1-20.0.0.1.pure64_amd64.deb

I would check elsewhere before doing this though, because my intranet server
will tell you that I've hosed this before.

For anyone on the list that's dealt with this, it this suggested solution
correct? Also, I have a system where some idiot (me) temporarily uninstalled
base-files in order to upgrade libc6. If I did this same command from an
ubuntu AMD64 live cd for libc6 and base-files, but with the -root= option,
fix the problem for me? Thanks.

install problems amd64: mirror search

2005-02-13 Thread Erik Norman
Hello!

I have problems setting the right mirror to install debian on my amd64
computer.

I can't really explain where the error is, if I knew that I would be
able to resolve the problem.

I configure the network manually (I know the IP, the broadcast, the
gateway, etc. by heart), then I enter the mirror manually
debian.inode.at/debian-amd64/pure64/
then I am not really sure which directory to enter. I have entered
several directories (I have been trying all day now)
I think this should be correct.
dists/sid/main/binary-amd64/

The error message is always the same:
the mirror is unreachable or not the correct release file or similar.

If I enter the normal mirrors, then it does not find any binary packages
for amd64..

Anybody able to help me?

(Don't care if the mirror is slow, as long as I get it working)

Hello,

I have tried again several times, and now i found something weird:

I entered the mirror domain:
debian-amd64.alioth.debian.org
then I added the directory:
/pure64/dists/sid/main/binary-amd64/

well, the output was the following:
Debootstrap Error
Faild getting Release file
http://debian-amd64.alioth.debian.org/pure64/dists/sid/main/binary-
amd64/dists//Release.

The installer adds some rubbish to the correct link I specify.

Is there a way to manually insert the link?
I entered the menu : Select mirror.

Erik

graphical server

2005-02-13 Thread Erik Norman
Hello!

My system is up and running, but still completely in text mode.
I have installed several packages with apt-get (from k3b to xmms to
evolution etc.) but I am not able to start the graphical server.

I used Fedora Core3 until yesterday and there it just to type startx.
I get some error messages (file - directory not found or similar) ...

I am still a newbie to Linux..

Can anyone give me an advice what to do?

Is there a graphical server configuration tool (for setting up graphic
card and monitor, xorg.conf etc.)?

Erik
