Fam did this on one of my boxes. I eventually tried writing a script to kill
and restart it when it started consuming 100% of the CPU time but I never got
it to work correctly. Anyway after much research I concluded that no one
really knew what was wrong and no one was looking at fixing it - I removed
fam.

Nothing stopped working but konqueror no longer detects changes to the file
system as quickly as it did before. As I understand it this is because it now
has to poll rather than simply listen t fam.

2006-01-10 Thread Graham Smith
Ok, I feel very very stupid now.

I have found the menu bar (kicker) it was where it's always been at the bottom
of the screen :o).

I have the kicker set to auto-hide. Under 3.4 moving the mouse to the bottom
of the screen causes the kicker to pop-up. It would seem that under 3.5 one
has to move the mouse to the bottom left corner to make the kicker pop up. I,
of course, wasn't expecting that and rarely put the mouse in the bottom left
corner of the screen.

Thanks for the help anyway.

I normally use synaptic as I never got along with aptitude - perhaps it's time
to learn.

Anyway, the problem seems to be that there are some packages that are fairly
central to KDE (kcron for instance) that are still at 3.4 in unstable. I am
pretty much resigned to just sitting tight now. I tried to use packages from
experimental but they have version numbers slightly too low.

Please don't laugh...

2006-01-10 Thread Graham Smith
Hi,

Ok, you can maybe have a bit of a chuckle. I have just done an upgrade and,
because I wasn't paying attention, I installed a load of KDE 3.5 packages
which has left we with a less than perfect KDE experience. I have managed to
get most things working again but due to dependency issues I can get the menu
bar to work.

The way I see it I have three options

1)Attempt a complete downgrade of all the KDE stuff. I would rather not do
this.
2)Add alioth to my sources list and cross my fingers that the packages in
there will fulfil the dependencies (they mainly have version numbers along
the lines of 3.5.0-01 where are packages in the official repositories are
3.5.0-03).
3)Wait it out and hope that the other 3.5 packages enter unstable soon. I
really don't want to do this as I need to get on and work.

Do I have any other options? What would you recommend? (Be more careful when
upgrading would be my recommendation to myself).

Thanks,

Graham

Re: OpenOffice-2.0.

2005-12-09 Thread Graham Smith
:o)

This one comes up every few days.

Basically it goes like this...

OOo 2.0 isn't likely to ever find it's way into the AMD64 repository at least
not as a 64 bit app. It's not 64 bit clean and, if you do get it compiled,
won't run correctly.

Your best bet is to install it in a 32 bit chroot. It's not a terribly nice
solution IMHO but it does work pretty well.

The difference, at least to my eyes, is much better font rendering and a
generally over all shaper image with the nvidia drivers compared to nv. I
didn't realize that a driver could make so much difference but switching to
nvidia after using nv for a while was like getting a new monitor.

Having said that I can't get the nvidia drivers to work with 2.6.14 but they
work fine with 2.6.12.

Sorry to quick for my own good. Forgot a bit. You also need to download

http://amd64.debian.net/debian-amd64/pool/main/o/openssl/libssl0.9.8_0.9.8-3_amd64.deb

and install with

dpkg -i libssl0.9.8_0.9.8-3_amd64.deb

that should do it :o)

For those like me that are very new to downgrading a package:

download this:

http://amd64.debian.net/debian-amd64/pool/main/o/openssl/openssl_0.9.8-3_amd64.deb

then use:

 dpkg -i openssl_0.9.8-3_amd64.deb

This looks like the same problem that I am having at the minute as I am
getting exactly the same error message when I try and login. In think the
problem is to do with the openssh-client segfaulting. My guess is that you
are using ssh-askpass (as I am) to start your kde / gnome session.

The bug that seems to be most relevant is this one:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=328606

only it was filed against 1:4.2p1-3 and the current version that seems to be
in error is 1:4.2p1-5 I suppose the bug might have popped back up. Can anyone
confirm that this is what is causing this bug.

What makes me think this is the problem is whenever I try and use anything
that relies on openssh-client such as ssh or ssh-askpass I get a segfault
message in the syslog like this:

Oct 18 14:07:20 localhost kernel: ssh-agent[6705]: segfault at
000114211b2c rip 2ac40817 rsp 7fdbaa48 error 4
Oct 18 14:13:06 localhost kernel: ssh[6763]: segfault at 00014a00432c rip
2ac40817 rsp 7fce6e58 error 4

Anyway that's my best guess. If it's not related I would apprecaite help with
this problem because I too can't log in.

Cheers,

Graham

Open Office 2.0

Ok, I suppose someone has got to ask this.

Are their plans to make an OOo 2.0 .deb for AMD64? AIUI it should compile for
AMD64 so I assume there will be a package eventually. It's now in the RC
stage so I presume it is close to being ready.

If there are plans when can we expect to see it appear as I am really fed up

My experience is that make-jpkg works fine for installing the amd64 Sun JVM
but that it is basically not worth using unless you are using the box solely
as a web server. The problem is that the Sun package (at least last time I
checked which wasn't long ago) only came with a server mode version of the
JVM which grabs all available memory. Client applications (NetBeans in my
case) run like a three legged dog because they rely on the incremental GC
offered by the client mode VM.

After struggling with trying to use the server mode VM for a couple of days I
switched to the 32 bit version. I found it works best with the 32 libs
package installed rather than trying to use the libs out of a chroot.

OT chroot problem

2005-09-01 Thread Graham Smith
Hi,

Sorry this is a bit off topic but there isn't a debian-chroot list :o) but I
reckon most people here run a chroot so here goes.

I have just installed (an experimental version of) pgadmin3 into my chroot.
The program itself works fine but for some reason it can't connect to the
postgres database running on the same machine in the host (64bit Debian) OS.
I have had a similar problem when trying to run tomcat inside the chroot so I
presume there is something about the way a chroot handles ports that I don't
quite understand. What am I missing?

I realize this question is a little vague but I'm not sure where to look for
the problem.

Many thanks,

Graham

It's not broken although I'm not sure I would try installing it again :o)

This information may be a bit out of date as I installed the drivers a few
months ago but I got the packages from here

http://bytekeeper.as28747.net/debian-amd64-alioth-old/pure64/

I don't even know if it is still up and running. I seem to remember reading
something about the nvidia drivers being removed from the normal repositories
which is why I got them from here. After that the uses module-assist install
works fine.

RealPlay and sound

Hi,

I'm running the AMD64 port of Debian and have real player (shudder) installed

fine and I get sound but real player blocks the sound card stopping other
sounds being played. I am using KDE at the moment and have tried running real
player through artsdsp (in the 64bit system) but had no joy with that. What
bit of magic am I missing?

This is a known problem and I asked the same question a couple of days ago :o)
so your not alone. Here are the steps to fix it.

1) Grab "kdelibs-data_3.3.2-6.1_all.deb" or silimar 3.3 version from a mirror
(look under pool) or your apt-cache (/var/cache/apt/archives IIRC).

2) Install with
dpkg -i kdelibs-data_3.3.2-6.1_all.deb

3) Log out and back in (you may need to restart (k|g)dm but I didn't).

4) Enjoy menus again.

Put the lib in hold or be careful when upgrading. If you join the debian-kde
mailing list they have promised to post a message when kde 3.4 is ready.

The bug report is http://bugs.debian.org/323747 if you are interested.

Sound and a chroot

2005-08-09 Thread Graham Smith
Hi all,

I'm having a bit of a problem getting sound to work correctly from / with my
chroot.

I fancied listening to the radio the other but the station I wanted to listen
to only broadcasts in Real media. Taking the holy water in one hand and a
cross in the other I installed real player 10 in the chroot.

I have got it working just fine and can listen to the radio except that real
player take exclusive control of the sound card. I've met this problem before
so I tried running real player through artsdsp (I'm using KDE) but to no
avail - exactly the same problem.

Anyone got any ideas? What would be really helpful is a page / site about the
Linux sound system(s). I am perpetually confused about how they all hang
together and they seem to be about the most fragile part of all my Debian
systems.

Many thanks,

Graham

I just tried to do an upgrade and apt hit a problem when it tried to upgrade

Re: Has anyone ever....

2005-06-22 Thread Graham Smith

I haven't tried it, but I suspect if you tell it to use them as DDR400,
it will either automatically pick slower timins for CAS and such, so it
will at best be rather slow DDR400 memory, or you have to make it use
slower timings to make it work.

I have used PC100 CAS 2 memory as PC133 CAS 3 memory before and that
seemed reliable.

Len Sorensen

Probably very unlikely that it would be stable with the same latencies
and timings as the 2700 settings then? I know that some chips far out
perform what they boast, where others barely meet the expectations. No
clue if Corsair can hold these expections or not. : /

Thanks for the reply,
Nathan

Code is poetry.

You'll need to test them and see what happens. Corsair is generally
"overclockable" but by how much you can't tell until you try. If
possible position a fan over the memory to cool it when it is
overclocked as this can help achieve higher overclocks.

Of course this is predicated on you having a motherboard that allows you
to tweak the memory speeds and timings which not all do.

Confused about 64bit

2005-06-21 Thread Graham Smith

Hi, I'm confused and I hope that you can help me out.

I'm running the pure64 port of Debian on an AMD64.

My understanding about the AMD64 was that is could run in three modes:

1)32 bit emulation mode where you are using a 32bit kernel and 32 bit
libraries (eg WinXP).
2)mixed mode with a 64 bit kernel and 32 bit libraries (eg "Normal"
Debian with 64 bit kernel)

3)full 64 bit mode (64bit Debian port)

I thought that in full 64 bit mode it was impossible to run 32 bit
applications unless the 32 bit libraries had been tweaked to allow it.
But, and here's the strange bit, I am running the 32 bit Sun Java VM
under the 64 bit environment quite happily without the ia32-libs package
installed. How come this works? Surely the VM is compiled against 32 bit
libraries and therefore shouldn't work when running against the 64 bit
ones? That of course then raises the question why don't other 32 bit
applications like OO work under 64 bit?

I suspect there is a hole in my knowledge but I don't know where. A
quick lesson would be appreciated. Many thanks,

Graham

One easy way to try this is to hit a mounted remote file and not have
portmap running. famd will go into 'D' and never leave.

Use gamin instead. FAM is dead technology.

However, interesting, even though gamin is supposed to be a drop-in
replacement for FAM, I've had it break with courier-imap before.

LOL. This goes from bad to worse. I ran

apt-get -u install gamin

and got

The following extra packages will be installed:
  libgamin0
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  fam libfam0c102
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  gamin libgamin0

which I thought "yeah great that looks about right, Gamin really is a
drop in replacement for fam". Just after it got the packages though apt
comes back with the stuff below (a list of about 100 packages that
depend on libfam0c102). Correctly me if I am wrong here but I thought
apt was supposed to resolve dependency issues _before_ installing and
removing packages.

dpkg: libfam0c102: dependency problems, but removing anyway as you request:
 kaboodle depends on libfam0c102.
 ksnapshot depends on libfam0c102.
 kmoon depends on libfam0c102.
...
...

Anyway, should I re-install libfam (fam doesn't depend on libfam for
some reason) or will the gamin libraries act as replacements? I have
tried a couple of the applications on the list and they seem to still
work but maybe I haven't tried any of the bits that actually rely on
libfam yet :o)

Thanks, Graham

PS Is there some technical reason why none of the Debian mailing lists
don't set the Reply-To header?

fam problems

2005-06-15 Thread Graham Smith
I, as I am sure many of your do, suffer from the "fam problem".
Basically it goes like this: I will be working away quite happily, I go
to open a file and fam hits 100% cpu load and never stops. This has
happened with all my Debian boxes (testing and unstable on i386 and
pure64).

On my old machine I wasn't that worried about it. It was a pain to have
to restart fam (it has to be done as the root user) but the processor
was slow enough that 100% load didn't generate that much heat. With my
new box though we are talking crispy processor after it's be banging
away at 100% load for a couple of hours because I didn't notice fam was
playing up.

What's the best way to fix this? I tried writing a cron job that would
check to see if fam was using more than 50% of the processor but for
some reason top always reports 0% processor usage when run via a cron
job. I don't mind disabling fam even but what's the best way to go about
this? I would like to remove it but Gnome depends on it.

As you will see if you have a look at the bug reports this is a well
known problem and it doesn't look like it's ever going to be fixed.

Thanks, Graham

Strange KDE Problem

2005-06-08 Thread Graham Smith
I have recently started experiencing a strange problem with KDE which
causes the background picture to disappear and the right click on the
desktop to be ignored (no menu pops up). I get no messages in
/var/log/syslog when it happens.

I'm running the pure64 port of sid with KDE 3.3.2. I think, but I can't
confirm this because it doesn't happen every time, that it has something
to do with Open Office or the chroot it is running in. I say this
because the problem seems to occur shortly after I start or stop Open
Office (it might just be the screen saver though but it seems more
common with OO).

I have my /home NFS mounted which is then bound into the chroot as is a
/data directory. /data holds the background picture and is accessible to
both the main system and the chroot (in other words it's not an NFS
problem).

Any ideas?

Thanks, Graham

Strange KDE Problem

2005-06-08 Thread Graham Smith
I have recently started experiencing a strange problem with KDE whereby
for some unknown reason it switches to Gnome (while I'm logged in - I
didn't think that was possible). The most obvious sign that this has
happened is the background picture set under KDE disappears and the
right click on the desktop is ignored (no menu pops up). I get no
messages in /var/log/syslog when it happens.

USB timeout

2005-05-26 Thread Graham Smith

Hi,

This might or might not be a problem specific to the 64 bit kernel but I
thought it was probably best to ask here first.

About 1 time in 15 the boot process fails and locks solid due to, I
think, a time-out problem while initializing the USB system. The
following are the last (useful looking) messages

ehci_hcd :00:02.1: USB 2.0 enabled EHCI 1.00, driver 2004-may-10
usb 1-8: device not accepting address 2, error -110
usb 1-8: new full speed USB device using address 4
usb 1-8: control timeout on ep0out

the last message is the last thing to be printed before the boot process
hangs. On normal boot it would produce

ehci_hcd :00:02.1: USB 2.0 enabled, EHCI 1.00, driver 2004-May-10
localhost kernel: usb 1-8: new full speed USB device using address 3
hub 1-8:1.0: USB hub found
hub 1-8:1.0: 4 ports detected
usb 1-9: new low speed USB device using address 4

Hardware:
*  Motherboard (spec): Gigabyte GA-K8NXP-SLI
* Video (spec): Gigabyte GV-NX66T128VP
* Sound: On Board (8 Point Surround)
* Network: On Board (2 * Gigabit Ethernet, 1 * Wireless)
* Processor: AMD Athlon64 939 3000+ "Venice"
* Memory: 2 * Corsair XMS 512MB PC3200 C2

uname -a:

Linux doozer 2.6.8-11-amd64-k8 #1 Wed May 4 20:27:04 UTC 2005 x86_64

Many thanks

Thanks for the pointer. I followed the instructions on that page, but
I'm still stuck; some weird things.

I installed the needed deb files: gcc-3.4, nvidia-kernel-source,

Then I tried to run the make-kpkg cmd from the header dir:...

It seemed to have a problem with the kernel version number, so I tried
changing it, or leaving it out etc. Nothing. I tried taking a look at
the Makefile in the headers directory. Couldn't do that either! I
stat'd the files in the headers directory, all stat'd wierdly (below).

This has got beyond anything I know in Linux, so some help would be
appreciated! How can files stat to be a symlink to a directory that

We do not seem to be in a top level linux kernel source directory

Hi,

I've just installed pure64 and I ran in to similar problems. I found the
howto a little confusing in a couple of places so I re-wrote them for
myself for future reference.

Here's the relevent section on installing the nvidia drivers

Add this to your sources.list as the non-free stuff isn't in the normal
repository at the moment.

deb http://bytekeeper.as28747.net/debian-amd54-alioth-old/pure64 sid
non-free

* Update sources.list as show above to include non-free.
* Install gcc-3.4, nvidia-kernel-source, nvidia-kernel-common and
kernel-headers-2.6.8-11-amd64-k8. The last one you will have to check to
make sure it matches your system use uname -a to find out what kernel
you are running.

* Swtich to /usr/src
* Unpack nvidia-kernel-source with "gunzip
nvidia-kernel-source.tar.gz" then "tar -xf nvidia-kernel-source.tar".
Which should leave you with a modules directory in /usr/src.
* Switch to /usr/src/kernel-headers-2.6.8-11-amd64-k8 and run
"CC=gcc-3.4 make-kpkg modules_image". Which will create a package in
/usr/src called something like
nvidia-kernel-2.6.8-11-amd64-k8_1.0.7174-3+10.00.Custom_amd64.deb
although your name will probably be different.
* Install the created .deb with "dpkg -i
nvidia-kernel-2.6.8-11-amd64-k8_1.0.7174-3+10.00.Custom_amd64.deb".

* Install the nvidia-glx and nvidia-glx-dev packages.

Note: you don't need the "--append-to-version -11-amd64-k8-smp" part of
the command if you are in the kernel headers directory specific to your
kernel as that gets appended automagically (at least it did for me) if
you have run teh command with that argument you need to run make-kpkg
clean first.

HTH

Graham
