Re: SATA install - AMD64 - success story

2005-07-25 Thread Jörg Ebeling

Hi Joe,

don't wanna bother you, BUT:

I've really no idea where people get all their SATA issues from, it's
not had issues for me since Woody 3.0r2 was current.

SATA is NOT running very well !
I'm running this AMD64 Debian since about 6 (or more) months on
different AMD64 MoBos and I'm really no newbe.

I've some non-working SATA (devices) too, but it doesn't matter me really.
However whenever I see a new version, module, trick, tip or whatever I
check it if it's working now.
In my point of view (and this isn't based on much know how in this
issue), all my SATA problems are coming whenever there's "NForce 3"
stuff on the Board.

However, what I wanna say is:
If I'm not able to wait 6 more months I'll buy me a new MoBo, but others
don't like to go that way of problem solution.

They really have problems with SATA, they really miss their devices !

Re: iptables on amd64 kernel

2005-07-11 Thread Jörg Ebeling

Hi Jakub,

I've the same on a server machine since weeks.

I could solve the problem by installing the 'amd64-libs' and a manually
install of 'iptables_1.2.11-10_amd64.deb' with '--force-architecture'.

Well it works without any further problems (by me). The annoying thing
is that apt/aptitude always tries to update the iptables package.

Maybe someone else knows a better solution.

Hi,

works fine, but iptables does not work:

# iptables -L
iptables v1.3.1: can't initialize iptables table `filter': Bad file
descriptor
Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.

Kernel and iptables upgrade did not help. Can I ask you for help?
What should I do to have iptables running with amd64 kernel?

I have installed also iptables_1.3.1-2_amd64.deb (with --force-all), but
result is the same.

I use Debian testing.

Thank you in advance!

Add

This should be

   GCONV_PATH=/usr/lib32/gconv
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libpangohack.so.0.0
GDK_PIXBUF_MODULE_FILE=/etc/gtk-2.0/gdk-pixbuf.loaders32

6. Copy /etc/gtk-2.0/gdk-pixbuf.loaders to
/etc/gtk-2.0/gdk-pixbuf.loaders32, and replace all references to
/usr/lib/ with /usr/lib32/:

sed 's:/usr/lib/:/usr/lib32/:' < /etc/gtk-2.0/gdk-pixbuf.loaders >
/etc/gtk-2.0/gdk-pixbuf.loaders32

7. To remove the warning during module loading:

rm /usr/lib/Adobe/Acrobat7.0/Reader/intellinux/plug_ins/PPKLite.api

Hm, 7 steps is a bit much. Looks like a script should do that :-) Does
it work for you?

Yeah, now everything is perfect !!

Lot thanks !!

Yep, I get that, too. I don't even know what that module is for, so I
am not worried :-) Deleting the module should "fix" the warning.

Ahh, deleting works :-D ...
such easy :-[ .

Ok, so pixbuf is a real problem. The issue is that it is using the
config file in /etc/gtk-2.0/???, which points to the mentioned
libpixbufloader-xpm.so. Since this is an amd64 shared library, it
cannot be loaded into the ia32 binary. Which gives me an idea: if you
add the ia32 libpixbufloader (probably in /usr/lib32) *in addition* to
this one, it should work for both kinds of binaries.

I already have them in the libs32 too...
However, haven't known that there's a config file... Simply changed it
there so that it points to the lib32 one.

And YEA... it works !!!

I guess something other don't work now due to the config change... but
"shit happen" ;-) .

Looot thanks !!!

Beside that, is there a chance to get the pdf mozilla plugin working or
is that impossible at all (as long as there's no real AMD64 port) ?

If the plugin spawns a separate process, probably yes. But my
experience with plugins is extremely mixed. As a plugin I prefer kpdf
3.4 in konqueror anyway.

Huam...

Okay, let me go some OT:

I know the other readers like xpdf, kpdf and the like, but beside that
they all have problems with some special images (i.e. JPEG
transparency) or that they're sometimes ugly in the handling, I've one
BIG problem with them... may be it's because of nescience of mine:

"The all have NO reload possibility !"

Imagine, you're developing in/a PDF and need to check the result very
often.
When using "Adobe Acrobat" as a Browser-Plugin, you've the possibility
to press the "reload" button of the browser = one click.

With kpdf or the like you need to close and re-open the file.

I'm working the whole day with my AMD64 environment.
Everything works fine.
But when I need to develope in PDF I really restart my system back into
IA32 only because of the "Mouseclick" case.
I know, it's stupid.

May be someone knows another way how to reload PDFs with one click.

Acrobat Reader

2005-03-25 Thread Jörg Ebeling
Hi Folks,
I'm running pure AMD64 on two machines (1 Server and 1 Desktop) since
some months,
and I'm really impressed about the functionality and completeness of
that port.

But what I still miss for my 100% luck, is a any kind of a real Adobe
Acrobat reader.

I'm using now kpdf, kghostview and xpf. Each of them is working well,
but I always miss some features and/or functionality.

Does anybody got any kind of acrobat reader installed ?
I mean any version 5.08, 5.09, 5.10, 7.x, chrooted or not ?

HiHoo,
thanks to all for your awesome help !
You might check out section 10.9 of this manual to see if it helps:
http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/reference/ch-gateway.en.html
cheers,
-Ted

The docs have helped most ;) !
I first tried the "nameif" programm but finalized it now
(due to more
flexibility) with the "ifrename" package.

Thanks again to all ... and a lot further happy AMD64

Any help/suggestions ?

If it really does it randomly, you could simply repeatedly start and
stop the driver until it gets them the right way around. On average,
it'll take you only two attempts (the worst case is pretty bad 8-)
Yes it really does it randomly and I already thought about such
script... but it may take 2, 3 or in the case of bad luck a lot more tries.
Howeven, the same as with the ifupdown suggestion, I feel that this
would NOT be the right way.
It sounds like Win~1 solution "If it's not working, simply boot (reload)
again, you may have luck then" ;)

Dual NIC - device assign problem

2005-01-28 Thread Jörg Ebeling
HiHo,
I've a Tyan S4882 with a Broadcom Dual NIC controller on Board.
The NIC module "tg3" loads so far but assigns the ethernet devices
(eth0/eth1) randomly to the NICs.

First I thought it would be a noob problem but after parsing (nearly the
whole) google I still found no real solution.

My hope in a i.e. "MAC address selection module option" is gone and I
saw/read that Dual NIC's seem to have that problem in general (ifup/down
says such stuff in the man page).

The mapping solution which is proposed by ifupdown, doesn't makes me
happy too, because I need the ethernet device names later on in my
shorewall. Well it could be made via scripts and shorewall variables,
but it sounds like the wrong way for me.

Any help/suggestions ?
